Approximately 100 people attended the Harvest Dinner at the Cranberry Island Community Center on Sat., Oct. 10th. Chefs Richard Beal and Gaile Colby served a wonderful meal! Many thanks to them for all of their planning, shopping, preparing and serving. Thanks also to Ruth Westphal for the wonderful centerpieces, to Janice Murch for the donation of applesauce, to all who set up and cleaned up, and to all who attended. A great time was had by all!!

Janice Murch has donated many bulbs to the Ladies Aid. Individuals should stop by the Community Center, pick up a bunch of the bulbs and plant them here and there all over the island - we'll enjoy the beautiful results next spring!

Twenty-five people attended the Ladies Aid breakfast on Saturday a.m. A great time was had by all - folks enjoyed having foods they do not typically have at home(especially bacon, apparently, as four pounds disappeared by 8:45!)and several lingered over coffee, chatting with neighbors. Thank you to those who supported our work by attending!

We're considering a move back to The Cranberry Isles in the very near future. We've thought of nothing else since we left GCI a few years ago. So this is a "Job Wanted" ad. Not your typical wanted ad nor a typical way to go about it. But, hey, the Cranberries' is not your typical place (that's a compliment!). So if you have any job vacancies, ideas, or suggestions, we welcome them all.

We have a varied work experience, which we also think is a good thing and beneficial to island living. While on GCI, Ingrid cleaned houses, managed the island gas pump, worked at the general store, substituted in the library, worked in a boathouse office, and provided child care. Off island, she is a photographer, photography instructor, and also works in the printing and graphic design industry. Richard is a licensed barber. And while on GCI he did carpentry, care taking, landscaping, maintenance of the gas pump and painting.

You can contact us via e-mail at ingridgaither@yahoo.com or phone at 704-546-7131.
Thank you for your interest and consideration. And we sure hope we meet again soon!

Sincerely,
The Gaither's

Thanks to all who contributed to the success of the Great Cranberry Ladies Aid 109th Annual Fair! Many, many folks worked on publicity, posters, soliciting and donating raffle prizes, baking, chopping, cooking, sorting and selling White Elephants, knitting, sewing, dipping ice cream, grilling hot dogs, selling tickets, set-up, clean-up and a host of other fair chores. The efforts of many made for a great community event!!

John W. Goodwin, Jr. and crew did a wonderful job of preparing the site and pouring the slab for the new Ladies Aid craft barn. Wallace Builders will begin construction on Tuesday!

The Ladies Aid Annual Meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 19th, 5:00 p.m. in the Community Center.

"Bags for the Barn", a trunk show and sale of my quilted bags, will be held at the Community Center on Sat., August 29th, from 10:00 - 3:00.

http://mdi.villagesoup.com/Sports/story.cfm?StoryID=169851

Just thinking with an athletic history like we are lucky to have out on GCI it might be fun to organize a group and see if their is support to redo the ballfield with a running track around the perimeter and a playing field in the center. If we could get everyone on the same page we might even be able to host some major competitions which could help the island in the long run.(pun intended)

UPDATE!

Cranberry Island Ladies Aid Notes:

Plans are in full swing for the 109th Annual Fair, to be held on Wed., Aug. 5th. Donations for each department - bakery, white elephants, crafts and "porch" (jams, jellies, pickles, flowers, vegetables, etc.) are needed and will be most appreciated. Judy Whitney Blake, chair of the bakery, is hoping for a variety of baked goods, especially pies, as they are a top seller. We also need willing workers for set up, clean up, working in the bakery, etc. Please call Mary Wallace (276-5203) or Sonja Colby (244-5708) if you can volunteer a few hours to help.

The old barn was moved to the ballfield on Friday and will soon be moved down the road to its new location. John Goodwin, Jr. and crew have prepared the site for the new barn - the cement slab is due to be poured this week. Stay tuned for further progress!

Hello everyone! My husband, daughter and I are looking for a one-week house swap on Cranberry Island in August or September. We live in a two-bedroom apartment in a lovely brownstone in historic Brooklyn Heights, New York. Our apartment has tons of light and beautiful views, and is one block from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade (directly across from downtown Manhattan). Almost all subways stop in our neighborhood. Please email creynolds@dapinc.com if you are interested in a trade! (Or, if you're looking to rent your place, we'd like to know about that too.) Thanks, Cory Reynolds

We'll also do a kids run again and other activites thru-out the day and evening. I can use volunteers and welcome input to help make this event a another success!

BULLSEYE SAILBOAT FOR SALE
1963 Cape Cod Shipbuilding fiberglass Bullseye sailboat for sale. This is a great daysailer. It is 15'-8" and seats 4 comfortably. This is a fiberglass version of the classic Herreshoff 12 1/2. We have sailed it in the Cranberry waters for 25 years. The boat is just as good today as it was when we bought it in 1983. The mainsail is about 4 years old, the jib is older. It has been stored and maintained at Newman & Gray on Cranberry. For further information contact Nathan Rome at 781 721 7415 or nathanrome@comcast.net.

Forty people enjoyed dinner at the Cranberry Island Community Center on Valentine's Day! Mark's beef stroganoff, served over noodles, was a tasty entree, served with Caesar salad and honey-glazed carrots and homebaked biscuits and rolls. The dessert selection was a chocolate lover's dream - rich brownies, heart-shaped chocolate cakes, red velvet cake with whipped cream frosting, chocolate-filled mini cream puffs and a strawberry-chocolate bavarian. No one went away hungry! Off-island guests were Judy & Roger Blake, Aislyn McCafferty, Michael Richman, Polly Moran, Sophie Dowling's Gramma B.J., and a lovely young lady from Machias who was visiting Phillipe Donald. Thanks to everyone who helped to set up, clean up, cook and serve - thanks to the biscuit, roll and dessert bakers - thanks to head chef Mark Alley - thanks to all who came and ate - thanks to Barbara Stainton for her presentation on her recent journey to Antartica - thanks to Ruth Westphal for making a patchwork valentine balsam sachet for a door prize - the prize was awarded to our youngest guest, Sophie Dowling.

Compost: I'll take it all, the bugs can sort it out! Items of high acidity can hinder decomposition, such as coffee grounds, but unless you are planning on some serious lemonade or caffeinating the Navy, a few rinds and grounds won't slow the worms a bit. As for eggshells, they crush more than break down, but calcium is a welcome soil additive (which counteracts acidity, conveniently). Detritus fauna are hearty, ambitious critters, and the only thing above their reach are large quantities of bones which get sifted out anyway; everything else is dirt. Heap it on!

Do you mind if it has egg shells or citrus? I have heard that egg shells need to be crushed and that citrus is not good for a compost pile. Wondering if you had any thoughts on this. -Katherine

If anyone would like to dispose of their kitchen compost somewhere else... I'll take it! Just toss it in the wire thingy to the left of my shed, or give me call, leave it on the lawn (preferably in a container), something-- just don't toss it in the trash or off the dock! Its good stuff, and I am building soil! Thanks~

my sister Joanne Beal Tate passed away on April 25th was born and raised on great cranberry island, was laid to rest on July 5th 2008, by her parents Clarence and Barbara Beal. i want to thank Annie Alley and Eva Bracy for their support at this most difficult time, we were very sad that no other islander, were there to say good by. she loved the island and all the people, she talked about life growing up on cranberry often. may god bless her.

But seriously, the high tide line (meaning winter storm surge high tide) is the legal boundary for private property. The seas belong to us all.

Dave! Explore away, see what happens (so says the Cranberry Isles Militia): I sure do! Nobody owns the beach, so you are legally free of restraint if you access by way of legal right-of-way, such as the town road to Murches, and also by way of the path behind the Donald Trust house (Barbara Donald house), which I give you permission to use (the path itself now being Maine Coast Heritage protected wilderness-- and I doubt they would mind).

dave, dead man's point & surrounding area is private property.

i suggest you explore the new 1-mile-long "Cranberry House Trail" behind Cranberry House. It was just created this spring, so it's not too well known yet. it is thru acres of unimproved land, very scenic & secluded. 250' or so of bog bridging thru wet areas.

Capt. John Dwelley is back in business with his water taxi DELIGHT. Call John on 207-244-5724 for fast and comfortable service to or from the mainland or among the islands. John also specializes in cruises up Somes Sound or to Baker Island. Thanks to Dick Avery and the crew at the boatyard for being impromptu hosts to my mother and I on my first visit back to Great Cranberry in nearly ten years. You have a little slice of heaven. I was glad to see it hadn't changed a bit since my childhood when my family would sail in on our old wooden sloop. Dick -- I think you have a museum quality collection of lichen growing on your home. How beautiful!

Thanks also to Danny Collins for sharing blueberries and stories. What a treat it was to meeet you Danny!

I hope that this was the first of many more visits to come and that one day I can join you all as stewards of the island. I'm an environmental scientist, not an investment banker though, so everything I pursue seems to require lots of patience, creativity, and frugality . .. . it does make for a better journey and it's the journey, not the destination, that offers the best reward. If any of you know of a unique opportunity for a young woman with strong arms and a strong heart for preserving a rustic property and growing a beautful garden, I would love to hear from you. My email is betsyblaisdell@gmail.com.

Thanks to all of you for sharing Great Cranberry with me!

For those of us who could not attend the meeting, it would be interesting to know what the price actually is. RedZone's web site is vague on that point, and the topic on the Cranberry site doesn't contain that information.

Hello All
For those of you that are looking to the RedZone Wireless, but are having some concerns about the price you should consider the following:
First the $10 or whatever you currently are paying for internet service will be gone. Second. I spoke to Jim McKenna if VOIP Phone Service
will work with his RedZone Wireless. He states It will. For those of you that do not know VOIP Stands for-Voice Over IP (IP is a series of numbers linked to
your internet account ). This will allow you to use the RedZone Wireless with your phone service. No more Verizon. There are half a dozen
service providers out there-Earthlink, AT&T CallVantage, Lingo, Vonage, SunRocket just to mention a few. And generally you can keep your phone number
I know I have been able to. But the main thing is that it will cut your phone bill by 1/3 to 1/2. I personally have been using these services for the last 5 years
and plan on switching the Islesford phones as soon as it is possible. The only argument against is if you have no power for the modem you have no phone
service, However when I was on Islesford in April and we lost the power for 2 days I fould that after 6 hours you loose Verizon anyway. Also most people
either have a cell phone or at least know a person with one. So really at the end of the month the extra you will pay for High Speed is Minimal when
you factor all of this in. Good Luck

Hi,

John and Dot Towns was the name of the couple who owned the Red House B&B. Dot passed away in the last few years. John died before her. Judy and Chong Lim, the Town's daughter and son in law, now have the property. They currently have the place for sale and they rented the house & the barn for a week or more this past summer.

What an awesome memory of yours about Dot Towns, talking of her love for John! They could be a role model for all of us couples. Thanks for checking in with us and best of luck to you out west!

Warm Cranberry Regards,

In the fall of 1991, my husband, myself and our first son (at that time ONLY son, at 15 months old) visited and stayed on Cranberry Island, I believe it was at The Red House, it looks like the place in pictures I've seen on this website. At that time it was owned/run by an elderly couple from Massachusetts. I don't remember their names, only that they were such wonderful people and the husband had had a stroke and was unable to walk or talk. He and his lovely and extremely capable wife made a big impression on my husband and I. One evening in dinner conversation, the wife said something we have never forgotten. Looking at her husband with obvious love and respect she said: "It doesn't matter that he is unable to speak or walk now, because I know who he is inside." He looked at her with that same deep affection. Only 5 years into marriage at that time, it gave us an insight to what it should be all about, and a standard to try and live up to. I just wondered if anyone there remembers their names. My family has since moved to Maine from California, 6 years ago, (with 3 sons now!)and it is partly due to the wonderful experiences we had in Maine that fall, including our visit to Cranberry Is.

Yesterday's edition of the Washington Post reported that MassMutual Life Insurance Company offers FREE $50,000 life insurance policies to families earning between $10,000 and $40,000 per year. "Each policy has a 10-year term and must list the insured's children as the beneficiaries. If the insured's parent or legal gardian dies during the 10-year period, the $50,000 benefit will be applied toward the children's education." MassMutual calls this program LifeBridge. Anyone who thinks their family might qualify, should call MassMutual at 800-272-2216.

I am a freelance photographer in Brunswick. One of the things I do is shoot stories for tourism magazines. My website is at http://www.MicheleStapleton.com

I'd like to spend three days on Great Cranberry this summer doing photography of the area. If I have to, I could stay in the B&B in Isleford and go back and forth by boat each day. However the prettiest light for photography is first thing in the morning and last thing at night (outside of the mailboat schedule) so it's definitely a huge advantage to stay right on GC if I can so I can be there for sunrise and sunset.

I was hoping I might find someone who could rent me a room for several nights on GCI. I am non-smoking, responsible, middle-aged, quiet.

If you think you could help, please post here or email me directly at Michele@MicheleStapleton.com

I would need a room for three nights, midweek, in July or August. Ideally I would plan the trip around good weather, as I can't get pretty pictures on rainy days. :)

Hello:

My husband is a lost son of Little Cranberry and is trying to find out more about his family history. He knows that his grandmother Ida M. married Harry Spurling and that his mother is Marion Spurling Alley. He has been told that the Bagley family is in the mix as my husband is gifted musically and he's been told that's the "Bagley" side.

We were told (when we visited Little Cranberry) that the Spurlings were an old part of the island as well as the Bagley and Alley families. Could anyone help my husband who is 55 try and piece together his family history. Where did these families come from, what type of work did they do, etc. My husband would like to know because he wonders how he came to have his musical, and mechanical traits.

Thank you for your help,

To my year-round and summer friends on the Cranberry Islands: 8 March, 2006
Spring is around the corner and I've finally made a decision, based on declining health issues, that I must sell the MDI Water Taxi/Launch Service business and the Webber Cove 22, 'Water Taxi', "Ripples." It's a sad, but inevitable time for me... As I began thinking about listing with a broker this morning it occurred to me that, over the years, several individuals (many from the out-islands) have approached me on the Commercial or Clifton docks, commented on the boat, and asked that if I ever wanted to sell the boat to please let them know (and I can’t remember a single name!). I felt obligated to attempt to let any one who's approached me with an interest know that the boat is for sale...
In any event, one person who has expressed interest yesterday, when I finally made the decision to sell, offered that he was primarily interested in purchase of the business, records, phone number, ad locations, etc.... He presently has boat(s) that he'd use to fill the Water Taxi role....
I'd frankly prefer to sell the healthy business in total. i.e. Boat, Northeast Harbor mooring, commercial dock contract, records, phone #, etc...... Ideally, a younger Island lobsterman or perhaps an early retiree who'd enjoy a summer business and the accompanying income and tax benefits thereof..., etc. Secondly, a seasonal or year-round Cranberry Island resident who wants safe, radared, reliable, life rafted, radioed, covered, heated transportation+++ back and forth and/or out and about..... (With galvanized tandem 4-wheel trailer to haul her "home" and also save on boatyard/hauling costs...)
The boat is a Webber Cove 22 (built in Blue Hill Bay) and was new in 1993. If you've seen her, and know me a bit, you know that she has been very well maintained and is loaded with extras....! (I'll have a complete listing sheet available to any who ask for a copy.) With its outstanding reputation and seaworthiness, I've been advised—and have observed—very, very few that one may see advertised for sale. (I've spent 2 days, off and on, searching on the internet and am only able to find two Webco 22 listings from the Chesapeake to Canada... The Webber Cove Boatyard has advised that most Webco's sell quickly to "friends" or acquaintances of friends... My suggested price will be very fair.
So that's it in brief. I'd really prefer to sell the boat and business combined as the combination has been very good to me and could be the same for one who steps into my wake. However, if I have a strong offer for just the business, I'll have to accept that and then sell the boat separately. If that becomes the case, I'd much rather sell to folks on MDI or the Cranberries!
If you're interested, or know of an island summer or year-round resident who might be interested, I'd very much appreciate it if you could pass this on. I've been advised these last few days that this boat will sell quickly and would hate to sell to someone from away, rather than to someone local who would appreciate and care for her here in her home waters...
I can be reached as follows: Wes Shaw, 80 Ripples Road, Mt. Desert, 04660. Phone 207-244-7312, Fax 244-0331, e-mail: wesshaw@acadia.net

Hi I noticed that there were some great pictures posted by Sybil Mahoney, my given name is also Sybil Mahoney, so Sybil, if you read this I would love to hear from you. It's not every day you hear of someone with your name, especially one as unusual as this. I'm from Canada, but who knows, maybe we shared some distant ancestor. My e-mail is eaglerib@telus.net. Thanks!

Hi all,
My brothers Brendan, Geoffrey and I are starting a community boat building project on Islesford called Islesford Boat Works (IBW). The goal of IBW is to further the island’s rich maritime history by engaging residents to consider new ways to live from and with the sea. Next summer we will be running our first program, focusing on boatbuilding with local youth. We plan to build a traditional sailing skiff with youth from the island and the surrounding area. Anyone over 8 years old living on Islesford and the surrounding communities able to make a significant time commitment will be eligible to enroll. The classes would be divided by age into two skill levels (8 to 12 yr. olds, and 13 to 18 yr. olds), each group coming twice a week for four hours.
We write to introduce the program and to gauge the level of interest, and we ask that anyone interested (parent or youth) please contact us so that we may create a possible list of participants and send you more information.
As of yet, we do not have the specific times for the classes, but the program will run all summer starting the first week of July. Tuition for the program is $75 per week; although no child will be excluded as scholarships will be available for all those in need. Participants will learn boatbuilding and woodworking skills through the program which will also challenge students to consider the community’s historical and current relation to the sea. Students will be expected to keep regular attendance and priority will be given to children able to make a commitment for the entire summer. Programming will be supplemented by visits to the Islesford Museum and surrounding boat yards as well as by an environmental education component covering forestry and marine studies. Journal writing will take place every class so that students can reflect and formulate their own ideas. Students will be encouraged to closely study and monitor their waterfront, developing an understanding of what a working waterfront is and the integral role it plays in shaping the community of Islesford. Please contact me if you, your child or someone you know might be interested in participating.
Thank you,
Amanda Ravenhill

Unto Us A Child Is Born

If you would know Peace, come to where the Christ child lies.
If you would know Joy, look into His mother's eyes,
If you you would know Love, draw closer to her baby small,
If you would know God, give Him your heart, your life, your all.

May the fullness of His freeing spirit be yours in this holy season and throughout the New Year. Love, Hal & Sarah

I noticed that note about the DELIGHT water taxi being back in business. Just wanted to add my thanks to Capt. John Dwelley. He picked us up early in the morning of July 22nd for a sunrise scattering of ashes ceremony for Noelle Richardson. Noelle was a lifelong summmer resident on Great Cranberry, and died Jan. 26th this year, after a relatively short battle with cancer. Thanks John, for the custom service and the perfect boat for an intimate gathering on the water.

Ok, I'll answer two of my own questions. :-)

The Northeast Harbor police take care of parking for people going out to Little Cranberry, and the cost is $10/day. Telephone 207-276-5531.

The Hancock County Sheriff's office has jurisdiction over Little Cranberry, and if my house is swallowed by a sinkhole while I'm there, my friend who is house sitting can call them and they'll get a message to me. Telephone number is: 207-667-7575

I probably won't need the payphone.

Hi,

I'll be visiting Little Cranberry, August 20-27. I'll be transported by private boat from Northeast Harbor. I've heard that there is cell phone service to the island through Cingular and Verizon, but it might be iffy. I have a few questions:

- Is there a pay phone on the island? If so, where?
- Is there a number that my neighbor can call and leave a message at if she needs to get ahold of me asap, in case of a catastrophe? For example, if a tree falls on my house, bringing with it live electrical wires, and it burns down? Police? Post office?
- Where can I leave my car in Northeast Harbor?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi , can anyone help me ? I'm looking for Barbara Myers , may be remarried ,Barbara ? I was told that she went to the college of the Atlantic and is now living on Cranberry Isle . Now for the reason for my search . I am in search of a violin that my greatuncle built . This violin has a carved head instead of a scroll .I would like to reunite this fiddle with its mate , my greatuncle only built two . john Hydley of North Conway N.H. traded this fiddle for a set of bagpipes to Barbara Myers when she lived in the North Conway Area. Iwas also told that Barbara might be from N.J. originally but of this I'm not sure .Barbara is probably a fiddler or a piper . If anyone knows Barbara or thinks they might could they please pass this along to her . I know this is a long shot as the trade was a long time ago . I would gladly accept a collect call or email me . 207-778-6101 or jkhodsdon@yahoo.com Thanks alot Jeff .

Thanks a million to the Islesford Congregational Church for a generous contribution to The Serendipity Group (friends
of Sri Lanka)for tsunami relief in that small island nation. Many fishermen lost their boats and homes (and even families) and we are assisting them as much as we can. If others wish to assist, the address is: The Serendipity Group, c/o Hugh Dwelley, 3508 Wilson Street, Fairfax, VA 22030.

This is a group of mostly U.S. Foreign Service Officers who have served in Sri Lanka at one time or another. In addition to myself, Islesford summer resident Howard Wriggins is a member as is former Maine governor, John Reed. Both Howard and John served as ambassadors to Sri Lanka.

In response to Ted Spurling, Jr.'s comments on the Removal Ordinance: The group that suggested a Removal Ordinance and, in fact, drafted the one you see, appreciates his comments and agrees that the wording might be in need of tightening. However, please understand the serious thinking behind the proposal.

Governance of our town by a group of volunteers is becoming an increasingly complicated and larger job. It requires the full committment of 3 selectmen. We absolutely need the ability to remove someone who is not doing 1/3 of the work.

Again, please understand this has nothing to do with a popularity contest.

I received my Cranberry Isles Annual Report, and alarms went off in my head while reading two of the articles on page 96:

Article 28 reads, “Shall an ordinance entitled ‘Recall of Elected Officials of the Town of Cranberry Isles, Maine’ be enacted?”

Article 29 reads, “Recall Action: A. To see if the voters of the Town of Cranberry Isles will vote by ballot for the recall of an elected Town official based on a motion from the floor naming the individual or individuals to be considered pursuant to the Town’s ‘Recall of Elected Officials’ ordinance. B. If Article 29A has been voted in the affirmative then Article 29B shall be considered: To see if the voters of the Town of Cranberry Isles will vote by ballot for the replacement of the Town Official recalled in Article 29A for the unexpired term of the individual recalled.”

This ordinance is not the work of anyone concerned with protecting or enhancing abstractly our democratic freedoms. Quite the opposite. After years of experience in a small town, I’m not being cynical asking the following two questions: 1.) Who drafted this thing? 2.) Specifically, whom does he or she wish to impeach next week?

Please read the full ordinance on page 64, but in summary the “Grounds for Recall” in Section 3 are these: Conviction of a felony; excessive absenteeism; failure to perform duties.

These might be legitimate grounds if handled properly, but they are made moot by Section 4, Motion for Recall, which reads, “At a Town Meeting, any registered voter of the Town of Cranberry Isles may present a motion for the removal of an elected official. If such motion for removal is seconded and approved by a simple majority of those present at the Town Meeting, such vote shall take effect as of the recording of the tabulation into the records.”

There are two enormous problems with the ordinance as written: 1.) Although the “Grounds for Recall” may seem reasonable, they are not pre-requisites for removal. Voters would be able to recall an official for any reason, however worthy, frivolous or spiteful. 2.) The “simple majority” is insufficient. It should be no less than a two-thirds majority, and then only after reasonable grounds had been established, such as those outlined in Section 3 of the ordinance.

As written, the ordinance is a slap in the face to the U.S. Constitution. It reduces the democratic process to a popularity contest, or, worse, to mob rule in the guise of democracy. If the person or persons who drafted the thing can’t come up with a better plan before town meeting on March 14, let us defeat Articles 28 and 29 without wasting any time.

---TOWN MEETING, ROUND ONE--- 8 March 2004--- We did meet today as scheduled and as required, and after much discussion--and a partial "a la carte" meeting--voted to recess until Monday, 15 March at 8:30 AM, Islesford. It was confusing but nobody got shot. Good thing, as Channel 5 News was there.

The room was very full of people, many determined to hold the meeting as scheduled, and we ended up with a pretty good compromise. We recessed twice for informational hearings (20 minutes to discuss the problems of continuing/not continuing the meeting on the appointed date; and 30 minutes to discuss a Municipal Fire Dept).

School Superintentents from Mt Desert were at the meeting, and so we voted on all related school issues.

We did vote on the following articles: Article 1, Moderator (Barb Fernald); Article 2, Town Clerk (Frances J. Bartlett); School Articles 20 A-H (Yes to all, and recommended budgets); Fire Dept Articles 23 A-C (Yes to all, with modification of 23-B (five zones instead of three; one for each island).

ALL OTHER ARTICLES AND TOWN BUDGET will be voted at the reconvened meeting on 15 March. This includes Manset property, solid waste, etc etc and election of most officers. SEE YOU THERE ON THE 15TH. Ted ><>

I'd like to encourage voters to come to Town Meeting on Monday, March 8th as scheduled, as there is some confusion about the date.

The selectmen had decided that it would be best to recess until the 15th to accommodate a person or persons who could not attend on the scheduled date (Letter of Transmittal, 5 January 2004).

The problem is, we cannot "reschedule" this meeting--we must meet on the original date and then vote to recess--or not--as the voters present so determine.

It is very possible that we vote to continue the meeting on the 8th as scheduled, so please plan to come just in case.

In order to be prepared, the School Board has asked the superintendent to come on the first date, and possibly both.

See you on the 8th and/or 15th. Ted ><>

My wife and I will be staying at the Braided Rugs Inn the week of August 2-9. We would like to visit Baker Island sometime during that week. John Dwelley can transport a maximum of 6 passengers in his boat, the Delight. The cost last year was $120 (I don't know if the rate is the same this year) so we were hoping to find two or more people interested in splitting the cost of the trip. Of course the trip will depend on John's schedule, the tides, weather, etc. Please contact me at the Braided Rugs Inn in August or answer me here before then. Or, please let me know if there are other boat owners who may be able to provide transportation to the island. Thanks for your help!

As far as i know, the only overnight parking officially available for visitors is that at Northeast Harbor. It is free at Joy Street lot (but that lot is unassigned spots and likely to be full) and fee-based at the police station -- i think $20/night.

My wife and I will be staying at Braided Rugs Inn on Islesford for a week in August. Just wondering where we should park (Manset or NEH) and not be fined. We paid $20 per night in NEH a couple years ago but have parked next to the town dock in Manset without any problems. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I think we would not build very soon, and would build modestly when it happens. Any ideas? Thanks. Our emails are marthadrose@aol.com or rosedan1@aol.com. Thank you very much - my e-mail adresse is Phil@Blink-182.org

Hope to see you all this summer!

Dear Chris White,
This is Laurie, Jeannie and Waddie's daughter. I have inherited their house and I am trying to figure out how to have wheels at not too great of a cost. I have been told you know a lot about golf carts. I am trying to learn more about them. Would you mind emailing me at SpenceEm@aol.com? I would love to ask you some questions. Many, many thanks.

Merry Christmas to all and have a most Happy New Year. Won't be long now before we are all back together again. The days are finally getting longer now! Good to hear the Manset deal finally went through. Kudoos to the Selectmen who made this happen. For the first time through such a process, I am amazed how smoothly it went. Now the tough work starts. CIRT received a $5,000 grant to help us get the Kane house rehabilitated. Progress there is slow, but I expect by Spring we should be ready to advertise for occupants. Again- best to all. Enjoy a warm Christmas. Chris & Susan

The WALL STREET JOURNAL for Tuesday, May 21, has a long,
interesting front page article (A1) on the complex problems of trying to control wild animals--including deer.It mentions professional organizations which may be hired to hunt in a safe and effective way (vs. the random hunting by amateurs). That alternative is worth considering on the islands. I will send the article to Ruth Westphal, and have it placed in the library. I welcome
others' views on this important topic. Richard Cox

Our friend and neighbor, Margery Phippen died on the first day of spring. Her daughter-in-law, Lucy Phippen, told me that Margery had been failing throughout the winter and had been hospitalized several times. She would have been 98 years old in a couple of months. The family plans to have a service for Margery here at the church on Cranberry when warmer weather comes. Margery will be remembered by us all for her keen sense of humor and of course, for her beautiful quilts. Ruth Westphal

Well folks, I am almost finished mailing seeds. Hope to hit some ski slopes before/after the Portland boat show. Then back "On Island". If you aren't a "year arounder", I suggest you read the Town Warrant on this site, and give support to what the Selectmen have put together. If you have year around friends, encourage them to go to Town Meeting, and let them know your thoughts. Considering the hassles they take, opposed to the mini$ they earn I think they have done a great job dealing w/ issues and looking forward to the future. As a "non-resident", but "in the gut" islander, I think they have done a great job! My thoughts to the future are: push for better recycling/trash collection services. This may grow to be a grand consideration.Keep outside (county) involvement low, but make sure there is encouragement to maintain Fire/EMT services. Your three "volunteer" Selectmen are doing a great job. Let them know your thoughts. Don't bitch if you haven't kep't in touch w/ those hard working folks.

Does anyone know of or have a home that they would consider renting to us for a week or two this summer - preferably in August (but let me know if something at the end of July is an otption). We would like most to be on the water, but will consider other options. We have 4 children and will PROMISE to respect your property and the island. Saturday, Feb. 9, was a cool, bright day in Buffalo. A moving and beautiful memorial service for Margaret was held, at the church to which we belong, Parkside Lutheran Church. Many members of our extended family and lots of friends shared our grief. Later, there also wa laughter,as is fitting,at our house here. In August, Margaret's urn of ashes will be committed to the soil of Maine, at Mt. Hope Cemetery, in Bangor. I hope many GCI people can come. Thanks for messages of comfort! Dick

I want to announce that for a undetermined amount of time I will not be participating in any activities to benefit the Ladies Aide Society.
My mother and I hoasted a Craft Day to make crafts for the Christmas Bazzar and not one member came to help. For the entire day Mom and I made crafts by ourselves. I spent alot of time and energy organizing this event and I personally feel very hurt and taken for granted. This event was posted at the store for a week prior to Saturday so everyone was made very awair.
In the past I have donated my time and even entire quilts for raffles to benefit this organization and a town that is dear to my heart but not my own. I am sorry, but I can not support something that no one else seems to want to take seriously. Good luck to those of you who want to play on in this game but for now I am letting this ball go.----- Cherie

I'm doing some research on some people that lived in Isleford before 1950. Is there anyone there that might be able to tell me about my family members? I'm interested in knowing anything that anyone knows about the Spofford family that lived there. Or if anyone knows of any living relitives of theirs. (Of which I am one, Herbert would have been my GF.)

I have read the census for Cranberry Island in 1909. I also have some other information on a few of the people that are listed there.

Anything anyone knows would be of great help. Thanks in advance!

Hi,
I returned yesterday from Viet Nam as part of a medical mission team from our church in Winston-Salem,North Carolina. Our team consisted of two physicians, three nurses and seven support people(2 US service veterans, myself included). Lan Nguyen,a Vietnamese lady, now living here in North Carolina had the original vision for this effort and a was a vital and driving force in our team. Our clinics were held in schools, foster homes, orphanages and many provincial medical facilities. We were able to see about 200 people per clinic, dispensing primary medicalcare, medicines plus small package of food (rice, sugar and noodles) to each person. We were able to hold our clinics everyday while in country without any problems. Our goal was to provide as much care medical care working within the guidlines of the local authorities. Through this avenue, we demonstated in a small way the love that we all share the wonderful people of Viet Nam. We were very thankful for the support and permission from the Vietnamese Red Cross and the endorsement of the local governments. Both organizations' support was vital. Without their support and the support of many of you, plus others around the country, this mission trip would not have been possible.
Thank you for your encouragement on this trip. Vietnam is a nation of 78 million people in a comparative area the size of New Mexico. We stayed in Saigon(about 8 million population) taveling each day to many different ruralareas. We traveled south to Longo An province for two days.Much flooding has hit this area and many villages are still digging out. and getting the lives back together from this diaster. We traveled about two hour by vans north of Saigon for two days and had wonderful days of work in governmental medical facilities.
I would be happy to give a more details to anyone that is interested. Our team was challenged and stretched in many areas yet rewarded in ways our beyond description and our imagination. Thank again for everything. I hope that this message isn't too long for our bulletin board format. I am sorry. Compressing this into few words is so difficult! Thanks again for everything. I will see y'all soon in August. PS: The Vietamesse prongs are delicious yet do not come close to the matchless taste of Maine lobster!
Warm Wishes,

A transcript of my conversation on the mailboat last summer (2000) with the production crew for Martha Stewart is available for the asking. I will recite it to you. It goes like this: "Your employer is compromising the beauty, isolation, anonymity and charm of our island life and culture. Please ask her to sell her house in Seal Harbor and declare publicly that it is no place to live. Ask her to confess on television and in the print media that she has left the area because sunrise on Cadillac is overrated; the lobster and crab fished locally is not as good as from the tanks at Morton's; and fancy motorboats from Hinckley are neither expensive enough nor do they come in enough choices of pastel hull with stripe interiors."

The photo of the apple tree blossoms with the white house & window in the background was taken 30 May 2001. The house you see is "The Store" (Rome/Glaser house).

I am forwarding this to the attention of the Cranberry Island Library. As you may or may not know, I am at MoMA in NY in the Publishing Dept. I recently became aware of an organization that might be useful to the Cranberry Island Library. A non-profit NY based group called Distribution to Underserved Communities (DUC) is soliciting our overstock Art publications (and from other Art/Museum Publishers too) and then offering the books FREE to Libraries that otherwise may not have resources to obtain the books. They can be contacted at www.ducprogram.org. Their catalogue of available titles is very useful and you might write for one at: Art Resource Transfer Inc. DUC Library Program 526 W 26th St Suite 614 NY NY 10001 (212 255-2919) or email: artresources@earthlink.net. Tell them an island native now in the MoMA Publishing Dept referred you to them. I just purchase a copy of Rachel Field's "God's Pocket". I was so very delighted to find that this book was reissued. In 1969, I was given a copy by a friend of Ms. Field, Irma Eliasson who for many years was caretaker at Woodlawn (Col. Black Mansion) in Ellsworth, Maine. I gave the copy to my son a few years back. Just so happy to find I could have another copy of this interesting story on the life of Samuel Hadlock. If you are not familiar with the book, I suggest you buy or borrow one for it is worth reading, even if you don't live on the Islands.

Bruce- Preble Cove sure looks differently now. Sue & I (and Lester) will return later this week for the duration. We look forward to seeing all. PS tune up your gas guzzlers before arriving or go electric.Island gas is now $2.50/gal. Take Care. See you soon. Chris

I have just logged onto the Cranberry Island website and was distressed to see the "Boycott China" banner at the top of the page. This is inflammatory and discriminatory...why would you want to include this on a Web Page which is dedicated to a beautiful, peaceful island, full of Lupines, llamas and lobsters? Truly, do not use the web page to assert your own political agenda. It will distance people from using the website as a source of information and contact with the island...it also points up your personal limitations and shortsightedness. Re-think this, ok?
Larry Allen  61

I recommend that if you elect to post your personal right wing political beliefs on what you have elected to call the Cranberry Island website that you rename the site the Komusin site and relenquish any claim that it represents the island. I would suggest that you reconsider referring to the title, "your webmaster" and perhaps consider calling yourself "the webmaster" because you do not represent many people's feelings in any manner.

I, your webmaster, Bruce Komusin, put "Boycott China" there and I meant it. I don't intend this site to be a political sounding board, but I felt it had to be said, to remind people of one of the few useful and effective actions they could take to show their feelings about the HOSTAGE situation.

And notice just how effective it really was -- just a few days after I posted it, China felt the pressure & saw reason! :-)

Now that the HOSTAGES are released, you might think I should take it off. Well, I probably will, eventually, but not right away. There are other issues with China that are almost as disturbing as this HOSTAGE situation. Need I mention the recent penchant of arresting scholars as spies, and the censoring of the Internet so Chinese citizens can't freely access the whole web, and thus can't see others' views of the Chinese government?

You are absolutely right, the "boycot china" should be changed to say "cut all ties with china" after all if it was not for all of the billions of dollars we have pumped into that country's economy where would they be now? They should have been bending over backwards to us after their hotdog caused this mess.
Chris White  58
04-11-2001 08:33 PM ET (US)
Seems to me whoever put the "boycot china" on, should remove it! This is not a place for political comments. In addition various Cranberry folks have been involved in diplomatic arenas. Time & patience usually pay off. Open communication makes things happen. Easily said, however since I am one of the most impatient ones. However, I do believe it is imporatnt to keep communications open. Boycots only increase emotions and cut off dialog. Nuff said..Chris

Hi all! Norman Sanborn and I are very happy to announce our recent engagement. We have selected to have our wedding on June 23, 2001. We are planning to have it here at our house by the water (at high tide) and surrounded by lupines (hopefully). If we get rained out the ceremony will be at the church and we have rented a huge tent for the reception. We are desperately seeking houses to rent for our guests, as the Kimball Inn Terrace is already booked for that weekend. If anyone has any suggestions or availability we would appreciate any input. Our E-mail address is ncsii@panax.com or feel free to call. Thank you and look forward to seeing you all.

Wini-Thanks. Yes, apparently the English used a form of inverted basket as a trap for lobsters and perhaps another basket for carrying the catch. From web sources Bruce kindly supplied I can see these were very different from the type I've described that might be of American origin.
Wini  38

I searched "Lobstering History" and In perusing the Great
Cranberry Island Historical Society pages I'm looking for someone
to identify an artifact described as a "lobster basket".

It is a simply made bulbous bottomed splint basket about a 18" in
diameter at the base tapering up to a narrower 10" inch or so
opening at the top and standing about 2 feet high identified by
the owner as being used to hold a lobstermans catch in days of
old. It would suit the purpose and is similar in materials used to
eel traps I've seen.

If it is as described I suspect it is something of a museum piece
as I've never seen another.

If there are any folks that might help confirm or refute such
baskets use I would appreciate your passing this on or putting me
in touch with them.

After hearing trees were down in the Trenton area, I called an Islander who reported that much damage was done on the island and the power had been out for 2 days. Many homeowners, especially those on the western side lost many trees, and the road towards Murches Point was closed due to fallen trees and power lines. Houses have lost roof shingles, in one instance flying shingles broke windows at a neighboring house. The Island men are taking generators to houses that are in danger of freezing pipes. Our thanks go out to them for their generous work. More snow and ice are predicted for tonight to make matters more miserable.

The Webmaster of www.new-england-public-transit.org believes that the Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) represents the next frontier for the distribution of public transportation schedules to busy corporate executives that bravely choose to travel by public transportation. Note that highway maps, city street maps, and even airline schedules are currently available to the users of these tiny computers.

Accordingly, the webmaster of the volunteer operated web site for public transportation wants to likewise see the Cranberry Islands ferry schedules in PDA format for the folks that somehow can't remember them. It isn't that hard for the Webmaster - if he takes the time to read (and experiment with) what has been posted to the bottom of that home page!

Just read the Bar Harbor Times, December 7 issue, about deer hunting. Two questions: The article states 220 deer have been "tagged" on Great Cranberry. Chris White writes about 90 have been killed. My 4 inch thick dictionary does not define "tag" when it comes to deer. What does it mean? Also how many deer carcasses are really lying around? I thought people shot deer for meat, not just for "sport".

To Vickie,Check out the Red House on this web page, they might rent for short stays in October. The smaller islands are definately private and the owners would frown on campers, they always worry about fire. In Oct, one would need a fire at night! Mt. Desert is an island too, with lots of campgrounds. Call Acadia Park service. Also mosquitoes are a big problem just camping anywhere. Good luck. Wini

He was raised in South Dakota and Minnesota, the son of Thorsten and Ellen Strandberg. Carl was a World War II veteran after enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1940. He served in battleships and later served as pilot in command of various naval aircraft. My fiance and I are looking for a place to get married next October. Though we don't have roots in Maine, we both have our hearts set on having the ceremony in Maine. We would love to have the ceremony on a small island and we would like the guests to be able to stay there. All guests are nature-loving, low maintenance people who could camp out. Does anyone have advice on how to get permission to have the wedding on Bear Island or any of the small islands? Please email me your thoughts. Thanks, Vicki
