Geaugans have been aware for some time that the facilities for the various county offices have become inadequate due to the necessary growth of county government. Attendees at a May 14 meeting of the county commissioners, Chardon City officials, and Chardon Square business people heard the results of a Cleveland State University urban planning report outlining four options for dealing with the problem. The major finding of the $35,000 survey favored moving all county offices, including the courts, to the Merritt Road/Ravenwood Drive area of Claridon Township, roughly 7 miles south of the city. It has been stated that moving the courts would cost Chardon its status as county seat and require the approval of the state legislature. Chardon officials and business people are understandably concerned about the economic consequences of the proposed relocation.

          A Roundtable Poll

What's Your Opinion?

Listed here are the four options proposed in the Cleveland State University planning report presented at a May 14 meeting of the county commissioners, Chardon City officials, and Chardon Square business people.

1. Keep things as they are:
Some offices at 470 Center Street, some offices and the courts on Chardon Square, and some offices in the Merritt Road/Ravenwood Drive area of Claridon Township.

2. Small South consolidation:
Move the 470 offices to Merritt Road/Ravenwood and build a new 100,000 sq. ft. complex for approximately 170 employees. Sell the 470 complex.

3. Chardon Square consolidation:
Develop 3.4 acres on the east side of Chardon Square, build a new 150,000 sq. ft. building and a three-story parking facility. Sell the 470 complex.

4. Large South consolidation (favored):
Move practically all offices, including the courts, to Merritt Road/Ravenwood, build a new 175,000 sq. ft. building for approximately 251 employees. Sell the 470 complex.
