WELCOME TO THE WIGTOWN PUBLIC MESSAGEBOARDS

Wigtown is Scotland's national book town. It is located in Dumfries & Galloway region of south west Scotland. Our closest postal town is Newton Stewart (approximately 6 miles). Wigtown is easily accessible from the main M74 via the A75 Stranraer road and then the A714. The busy ferry port at Stranraer is about 35 miles from here, and links mainland Scotland with Northern Ireland.

These free messageboards are accessible to all. Feel free to add your news, views and reviews about Wigtown and tell us what you really think - the good, the bad and the ugly...

Please note that although this is a free public service, these boards are monitored and, as such, any message deemed unsuitable by the administrators will be removed. You should also note that subscribers receive live updates, and that any responses via email will also post directly onto these messageboards, they are not diverted elsewhere to a mailbox.

We hope you enjoy the new web site and can find the time to participate in our online community.

Thank you for visiting the Wigtown Public Messageboards

WIGTOWN NEWS

Five days into the Wigtown.info web project and someone asks to buy the name! Aye, right! Who is kidding who, here? See what we had to say about that via the link on the main Wigtown.info page!

The Gift Gallery at 25 South Main Street, Wigtown has joined our 'shopping' section and, as a special introductory welcome, have provided readers of Wigtown.info with an exclusive 10% OFF voucher for use in the shop. You'll find the voucher under the 'VOUCHERS' section of the main site (believe it or not) where you can print a copy for next time you need an extra special gift...

IT'S MOTHERS DAY SOON!
That's a hint to my kids, along with another reminder that I really like the hand carved animals in The Gift Gallery.

The Grapes Inn, Agnew Cres, Wigtown is joining our 'Pub' section. We'll try pushing our luck for a free half, but I'm not too sure where the law stands on that now, but we might request a, 'buy your own beer, get your nuts for free' evening. (No pun intended)

Not a lot of action about here just yet, but nobody (apart from some bloke called Grant, who asked if we would sell) knows we are here. I guess that'll mean trudging around the streets telling everyone! If you do happen to stumble across this website during these early days of setting it up, please TELL A FRIEND, then you can both join free.

Co-op's 'cheap' bread is getting too expensive, and has anyone else noticed that their milk cartons hold less than the Somerfield ones and yet they cost 10p more? That was pointed out to me by A VISITOR to the town and we'd to go check it out for ourselves, just to find out. Guess what? It's true! And the Somerfield ones had vouchers on them for a buy one get one free in Oatsosimple! (Except I forgot about that and chucked out the carton!)

We heard Scad was preparing for another quizz night, but haven't yet asked him if it's true - forgot to do that too.

Any news or interesting info, list it here. If it's true, we'll leave it on and if it's rubbish, we'll delete it. If you 'Subscribe', which is FREE, then you'll get copies of the Wigtown News in your email.

If you are receiving this bulletin by email, please do not respond. This is for information purposes only.

We have now published the April issue (edition 13) of 'Now You Know' newsletter. If you would like to receive your FREE printed copy, please go to http://www.wigtown.info and submit your details. The newsletter, which is a monthly publication, is available online and in print. If you live in the Wigtown area, you can collect your copy from The Gift Gallery at 25 South Main Street, Wigtown, otherwise subscribe FREE via www.wigtown.info website. To date, we have subscribers throughout the UK and Ireland plus France, USA, Canada and Australia, so it is hoped that we can offer some lucrative, inexpensive advertising opportunities in the not too distant future.

This month, not only have we introduced readers to WIGTOWN.INFO but we have also included details of 'CYBERDOSH' and the many associates that we have there.

Cyber = online, virtual or pertaining to the Internet
Dosh = Cash, money, finance

What is CYBERDOSH? It pertains to financial transactions carried out over the world wide web. It is FREE to use and, by way of one rapidly expanding UK based online auction site, we can now offer all our readers the chance to buy and sell through the Internet with absolutely NO LISTING FEES. You can register FREE as a buyer or a seller and, if you anticipate selling multiple items, you can pay a single fee and open up an online store. The single fee payment brings with it a whole host of services, especially if you go for the 'Platinum' option. This includes LIFELONG MEMBERSHIP, ONLINE STORES, ZERO LISTING FEES, and, by far the best option, ZERO PERCENT sellers' fees. Check it all out at http://www.cyberdosh.co.uk and even if you just want to browse the online auctions searching for bargains, it is well worth your while taking a look. It is also, as I said before, FREE to join. The new website at http://www.Cyberdosh.co.uk is also used to further promote Wigtown and, from this week onwards, will be advertised on screen in Spar post office at White Sands in Dumfries.

Finally, please accept this invitation to join us on the afternoon of Sunday 20th May 2007 between 2pm and 4pm at The Old Bank Book Shop for a preview of the following week's art exhibition by local artist Harvey Mayson. A great deal of his work has been equestrian related, with horseracing to the fore. In Canada, one buyer now has ten race horse paintings by Harvey in his collection and, in Newmarket, his work can be seen decorating several items of merchandise sold by the world famous 'National Stud'.
For the exhibition, his first here in Wigtown, he has included several items of local interest - landscapes and local scenes. We look forward to welcoming you all at the preview. The exhibition runs from Monday 21st May to 28th May 2007, covering the weekend of the Spring Fling. (I'd best get ordering the wine soon) See you all soon, at The Old Bank Book Shop in South Main Street, Wigtown. (It overlooks the County Buildings and backs onto the public car park / lorry park at Chapel Court, so no excuses about lack of parking facilities.)

If you would like to receive (or cancel) these bulletins by email, you can subscribe / unsubscribe at www.wigtown.info via the 'Live Messageboards' link at the top of the page. You are also free to post your own news, views and reviews.

The Gift Gallery, South Main St
The Picture Shop, High Street

ARTISTS, CRAFTERS & ART LOVERS
http://www.onlineartexhibition.co.uk

From Saturday 30th June we will be accepting FREE entries for our first worldwide online art exhibition. This event is open to entries from all categories of art, including handmade or handcrafted goods. The only condition is that they must be original and they must be made available for sale and listed as such within the appropriate sections. In order to participate, you will need to register your details (if you haven't already done so) and verify those details to enable you to list your work and sell it via the eBid secure service.
The exhibition will run throughout the summer, promoted by NYK Media.

FASHION & ACCESSORIES
http://www.onlinefashionshow.co.uk

A very similar project to the above but open to anyone with fashionable items that they would like to showcase and sell. We already have entries for this event from discount designerwear outlets, jewellery stores and even recycled & seconds clothing specialists! so it isn't just about high fashion with high price tags - guaranteed to offer some spectacular bargains in the fashion department.

WIGTOWN BOOK TOWN
We had such a spectacular response from the many book sellers within the area that we ended up opening a new online book shop of our own via eBid.
We called it WIGTOWN BOOK TOWN and have, so far, listed 140 cheap paperback books but there are plenty more where those came from, believe it or not. The downside of this update is that it has caused such a stir amongst other online traders that we are now expecting a stream of campervans, led by one calling himself 'Rednosty', to descend on the town at anytime as nobody there knew we existed here!

HORSES, HORSES, HORSES
http://www.racingbookshop.com

For horseracing enthusiasts (don't read this part if you find horseracing offensive in any way, shape or form) we run the Racing Book Shop with well over 1000 items listed, including plenty of secondhand books, racecards, autographs, artwork, press photographs and horseracing memorabilia. We even have racehorses with shares available, if you really would like to get involved in the racing circuit at a higher level than watching TV or visiting the bookies. We do not condone gambling, nor do we recommend anyone uses any of the news articles found online for anything other than information, we just like the horses! Honest!

WIGTOWN.INFO
http://www.wigtown.info is beginning to take shape, despite the blatant apathy of some people who obviously just couldn't be bothered submitting their details for inclusion. Or perhaps business is so brisk that they just can't find the time to type out their details or drop off a business card. who knows? Well, if you know me, then you'll know I don't chase business; I'll put you together a web page advert for as little as £20, I'll build you a website for under £100, I'll show you a really cheap way of setting up an online shop selling direct to the public worldwide, complete with website and credit/debit card facilities, for under £200, I'll find you temporary staff by the hour at short notice and I'll include your news plus advertise your business FREE OF CHARGE online, I'll sell you an advert in 'Now You Know' magazine for anything from £10 - but I don't chase business. You want it, come and get it.
All contact details are on http://www.wigtown.info

FILEAS FROG
Finally, and this is probably going to be the hottest piece of news to come out of Wigtown in the NEXT YEAR, we are hosting a very unique fundraising event at http://www.scottishwebauction.co.uk This 'event' began one month ago and will be updated as it progresses - hopefuly around the world! Fileas Frog, ladies and gentleman, has left the building! And what happened next was absolutely incredible! Wigtown may have twinned with Becherel in France but now you know we may also be twinned with a little place in Arkansas. (What do you mean you didn't even know Wigtown had a twin town? Shame on you!)

If you want to be a part of the amazing Fileas Frog project, there are only 7 days allocated each month in which you can apply, and they end on Sunday this week. The next stage after that takes place between 23rd - 30th June. CHECK IT OUT. It's probably the best thing any aspiring writer, booklover, fundraiser or YOU will ever participate in, IF you are lucky enough to catch Fileas Frog.

That's it for now. I did consider including a section for 'CURRENT AFFAIRS' but my version was classed as 'taboo' (for fear of repercussion). Apparently, current affairs relate to topical newsy things that are happening now and not what I first thought, so, no gossip for you, sorry.

Please do not respond directly to this email as it posts straight onto the public messageboard system. Thank you.

OK, here goes... is it just me or is this one of the most outrageous offers you have ever received through your letterbox?
Read on, see what you think and then please let me know. At this point, I have no way of knowing how many people within this town have received a similar leaflet throught their doors but, rest assured, I will be making enquiries asap.

Wigtown Visit Becherel - that's the heading on the first 'form'

Recently, Wigtown book town was twinned with Becherel, Cite Du Livre in Brittany, (apologies for all the acutes n stuff missing, I don't know how to get them on my keyboard), which could explain the 'mysterious' disappearance of our Wigtown 'Bide Awhile sign. Some bandit's removed it and then, when it comes to replacing it, the new one will need to say 'Bide Awhile then Go to France". If you read previous postings here or elsewhere, you'll be aware that the replacement sign has to be paid for by the townsfolk as, apparently, it isn't the council's responsibility.

Anyway, I was under the impression that this was causing a problem as nobody really wanted to foot the bill. But why remove the old sign? Why not just REPAINT IT? I mean, we're a book town with about 5 resident artists and we're practically next door to Scotland's national ART town!!
Sorry, getting off the soapbox to continue with the original story, which is - Wigtown Visit Becherel.

This invite that has fallen through my rusty letterbox this evening is asking if we'd ALL like to go for a short holiday to France in September and it's worded like they're wanting to fill a 52-seater bus (less 2 places for the driver and backup driver, obviously). It sounds like some sort of student exchange programme and they have included a brief itinerary and costs. To my utter disbelief, they appear to be SUBSIDISING the trip to the tune of 50% for anyone who wants to go!!!

Now you may all be sitting reading this in awe, or stunned silence or bemusement that an entire town should recieve an open invite for a booze-up, sorry an intellectual 3-day excursion, to the Continent but what astounds me is this...

50 people leaving Wigtown on the same bus at the same time amounts to 5% of the entire population of this town disappearing on a road trip to somewhere that, when they get there, will increase their population by 7.14% because Becherel is SMALLER than Wigtown.

They are calling it a 'Transnational Conference' and anyone who goes will be classed as a delegate.

Is it just me or does anyone think this is taking things just a little too far using grant money when people in 21st Century Britain are still living with poverty, homelessness and any other crisis you can think of?

Or maybe it's just me who's weird thinking about it... ??

Should you decide to respond to this or any other message of similar source of origin, please be aware that your response will post directly onto public messageboards accessible by all.

Might be more helpful to check the facts about Becherel - maybe speak to the organisers.

FAO: Moi

Thank you for responding to my previous message.

If any of the organisers would care to respond, that would be most helpful. I have spoken to several people regarding the subject, including those whom I was lead to believe were involved either on committees or otherwise, and they have been unable to enlighten me further.

Having visited almost every business in Wigtown requesting information and/or updates to ensure that the Wigtown.info web site and our newsletters contain the correct information, I have, to date, received no further response - yours is the first.

Practically every business in Wigtown was visited to gather the necessary information for the free adverts you all have on the Wigtown.info website. This exercise was met with, dare I say, a less than enthusiastic response by some.

We live in Wigtown, we work in Wigtown, we actively promote and support this town in whatever way we can - but it is very, very difficult co-ordinating our own marketing programme with others who do not provide us with the necessary information when it is requested. If you can enlighten me (and, possibly, the other 13 people who recieve these messages) of how, exactly, The Wigtown Book Town Company, The Wigtown & District Chamber of Commerce and The Wigtown 'Book Events' Group all tie in together and how anyone can get involved in actively supporting what these groups represent, then I would me most interested to learn. I am aware that Wigtown Book Town Company and Wigtown & Bladnoch Small Business Association are stated as having merged to form the new Wigtown & District Chamber of Commerce, but what do all these groups want from the people - traders and residents alike - of Wigtown?

Regarding the Becherel project, was any of the information I mentioned previously incorrect? I would be interested in finding out more about how the trip is going to benefit the social and economic environment here in town; is it an exchange visit? I have read the information provided on the Wigtown-Becherel web site and I will be speaking to a few more people, originally because we were hoping to help raise the necessary funds to finance the replacing of the missing sign, but now, in addition, I want to find out who is in overall charge of co-ordinating these many groups that are, or are not, networking within this community.

Accept my apologies if anything I say/said has offended anyone, it is/was not meant to do so. I am simply seeking the opinions of others and hope that NYK Media can continue to actively promote Wigtown in whatever way, shape or form possible.

This project is being run by the Wigtown & District Chamber of Commerce, which may be the the smallest chamber of commerce in Scotland but is playing a leading role in a number of initiatives in the region. The president is Angela Everitt who is probably better placed than I am to give you detailed information. Of course, if you have a business in the Wigtown region you can be a member.

As a member of the Chamber and a book dealer I am
equally confused as to who is doing what?

The chances of Wigtown winning Scotland in Bloom has
been reduced by this confusion. At the very last
opportunity the Community Council have entered the
town in the competition for this year.

All I know is that the number of book buyers visiting
the town are falling each year to such an extent that
we will be closing AA1 at the end of September to
concentrate on internet and catalogue selling. This was
not the reason we came to Wigtown ten years ago.As
long as the post office stays in Wigtown we are happy
to live here and operate our business.

Other dealers report that visitors are increasing I
have not found that statement to be true.

I exclude Moi from these criticisms as she and her
helpers are doing a good job with the Book Events
Group and we are happy to support the coming book
fair.We are also supporting the coming Festival by
bringing to town the son of Georges Simenon who
created Maigret to celebrate our twenty five years in
the business.

I hope these comments do not offend any one but I feel
you cannot stay silent for ever.

WIGTOWN NEWS UPDATES

Good afternoon to those of you who take the time to read these comments.

Firstly, I am very sorry to hear that AA1 book store will be closing its doors. I see 451f has already closed its doors, Artyfacts is to close on the 30th June, Readinglasses is for sale, the butchers is for sale and several premises are already lying empty: this does not bode well for Wigtown, nor does it reflect any glowing colours on how all these committees and groups are organising your futures here. 'Shop local' should be an interesting project to develop.

The May festival came and went with nothing spectacular to encourage the locals to get involved and there seems to be some dark cloud hanging over the main festival in September - did the brochures get printed? This is a question, not a facetious comment.

NYK Media is NOT part of any committee or formal working business group within this area. Over the past few years we have tried to establish links with various groups but have found that we usually fall 'between the slats' of membership qualification. We had fully intended joining the new Chamber of Commerce and, indeed, had the forms, but on returning to the office within the County Buildings with our £50 cheque at the ready, we were informed that the cost of the basic membership was £100! That's double what had been quoted, double what was on the membership application form and double what it still states on the website. I was told this was to cover the cost of a 'lineage ad' in the forthcoming booklet - I did not part with the cheque, nor have I seen the booklet.

When asked about current members, we were informed of the 'FAB' project, incorporating Scotland's national book town, art town and food town, so that is what we assumed the Wigtown and District Chamber of Commerce was going to be all about - 3 towns in the southwest joining forces to promote 'Glorious Galloway', as it was explained to us, and, at that point, there weren't 50 people from across those three towns had joined 'the chamber', hence my surprise at the leaflet inviting 50 'DELEGATES' from Wigtown to visit the French book town of Becherel. Has the agenda changed?

I am still none the wiser as to the overall aims of any of the current 'factions' within this town and I will eagerly await hearing mention of this month's Annual General Meeting of the Wigtown & District Chamber of Commerce, which has listed it's aims to include 'A determined membership drive' and 'Setting in motion a regular Chamber News column'. We have offered to feature regular news columns from ANY Wigtown related source - that offer still stands - ALL of the responses can be seen on this Internet based messageboard.

We will be promoting Wigtown as a book town via our eBid based online book store (called WIGTOWN BOOK TOWN), and we promote Wigtown - not just the book trade - through our own web sites at www.wigtown.info and Scottish Web Directory. We further promote Wigtown as our home town and as the base for several long term major projects with which we are involved, so why do we continue supporting and promoting Wigtown?

NOW YOU KNOW!

PS: I was, thankfully, aware of the Wigtown in Bloom entry and managed to weed the front - I saw that message posted in the window of Old Bank Book Shop.

'NYK Media is NOT part of any committee or formal working business group within this area'
You maybe don't realise that most of the organisations are run by volunteers. They usually give regular information through letters to members, notice boards and the local press - in between trying to make a living -stop sniping from the sidelines and take the trouble to go and ask the people doing the work.

Dear Moi,
Contrary to what you believe, I am fully aware of the fact that most of the organisations are run by volunteers. Indeed, I fully appreciate that fact and see each as contributing to the overall marketing of Wigtown, for which, I am sure, everyone is grateful. http://www.wigtown.info is also run on a voluntary basis, as is the 'Now You Know' monthly newsletter. But my point is, 'sniping from the sidelines' is not what I am doing. I am actively trying to help promote this town and am trying to understand who is doing what and in what way it is possible to contribute more. As I said before, I have spoken to many people in Wigtown regarding this, but nobody can provide a definitive answer. For example, the missing sign scenario - if we wanted to help raise the funds to contribute towards the costs of replacement or renewal, to whom would we speak? I have mentioned this subject to members of both the Chamber of Commerce and the Community Council and will pursue the subject further.
If we wanted to provide our growing number of readers from outside Wigtownshire with news concerning the various events here, to whom would we speak? I have requested news updates from several people.
I have gone to great lengths to speak to practically every trader in this town with regards to the free advertising we are providing via the website at www.wigtown.info and I have collected the signatures of everyone who agreed to be listed there (your shop is listed). I have contacted various organisations and groups and will continue to promote this town in whatever way I can, but I still cannot find out the basics of who, exactly, is co-ordinating the various sections that make up the overall network.

The board advertising Wigtown was taken down by order of Angela Everitt, who had decided unilaterally after it had been damaged that Wigtown could not afford to have it mended. We among others would be happy to make a contribution to a new board in the original position.
As a member of the original committee of the Chamber of Commerce who went round soliciting members on the understanding that the starting fee would be £15, and as one of the 43 fully paid up members, I feel that a sudden request for £100 fee, without any notification or election needs some explanation. Perhaps someone on the Chamber of Commerce could confirm or deny this?
I did see that there is a notice reporting a public meeting to be held about Scotland in Bloom on the 19th June in the County Buildings. Perhaps for those who do not frequent the Square the local papers could be asked to advertise it.
Moi  18
08-06-2007 07:46 GMT (GB)
We were told from the beginning that the fee of £15 was a short term measure, most C of C fees are considerably higher. As a member of the Chamber I was informed that the inaugural committee would be resigning at the AGM to allow an elected committee to take over.I assume that other members were also notified.
The sign was put in place many years ago by the old Business Association when there were fewer council signs & was repaired by the Association about five years ago. We certainly need more and better signs on the roads leading to the town and within the town itself. This is maybe an issue that could be better addressed by the Community Council.
Robin Richmond  19

In answer to the comment of yesterday about Scotland
in Bloom the Community Council have no funds to
advertise in the local newspapers.

It is usual for local newspapers to be willing to print local news. The Scotland in Bloom competition got coverage last year, and they also printd a notice about the Scotland in Bloom meeting held earlier this year. Surely someone can get out a press release, or even telephone, email or fax the papers with the appropriate information?

WIGTOWN NEWS UPDATES

Following on from the AGM of the Wigtown & District Chamber of Commerce that was held last night in the County Buildings, I would just like to say that comparing alleged membership figures with actual members in attendance, we were somewhat surprised, even a little disappointed to hear of so many who failed to attend.

Even more surprising is the fact that there has still been no mention of who is in charge of PR, when and how recruiting of new members is being done, an exact price for membership (we heard that for 'most' people, the price was £15 but it has still been made clear to me that for NYK Media to join it will cost £100. I'm interested in hearing from anyone who is already a member, and who is renewing their membership, on their views regarding the various membership fees.

The missing sign wasn't on the agenda, so we plan on following that up for ourselves as it would be really nice to see either the old one repaired and replaced or a new one erected. If anyone can provide details of the whereabouts of the old one, the cost of repairs or an estimate for commissioning and erecting a new one, get in contact. We have already spoken to a few people who are prepared to help us raise the necessary funds.

Wigtown in Bloom - I would be delighted to include any news of this in our own monthly newsletter, 'Now You Know'. Distribution is increasing slowly but steadily and we have a guaranteed 2000 copies going out mail order in July. Anyone interested in placing a small advert is welcome to do so, with back page boxed ads starting from as little as £10. Limited availability and all being sold via the www.cyberdosh.co.uk associated websites.

Our offer is still open - FREE ADVERTISING is being offered to ALL Wigtown & surrounding area businesses via the www.wigtown.info website.

Further updates as and when available. Thank you for taking the time to read these bulletins and for any response we may receive.

If you were at the meeting you could have raised matters that concern you such as the sign. We were invited to ask questions or raise any issues but nobody said anything. Sorry there was a query about the absence of committee members. There was also an invitation for any member to put themselves forward for the 2 vacant places on the committee.

It is not surprising that there were so few members attending the AGM of the Wigtown and District Chamber of Commerce, as the Chairperson was proud to announce that they are the smallest Chamber in Scotland. As more committee members resigned than stood for appointment she is obviously out to keep this record. As less than half of the committee turned up to this most important meeting, they, like the members, must have been voting with their feet.
The election procedures seemed unusual, to say the least, as we were not asked to ratify the existing committee. Having belonged to other Chambers of Commerce for some years, we had expected at least a counted show of hands and a proper tally kept. Neither was there any distinction between those who were paid up members of the Chamber and observers.
We must say that we did not bring up the question of the removed sign at the meeting as we were not aware that it was removed by order of the Chamber. We were given the impression that this was the decision of the Chairperson alone.

WIGTOWN NEWS UPDATE

VIRTUAL WIGTOWN TWINS WITH SULPHUR SPRINGS

For anyone who has been reading the monthly 'Now You Know' newsletter, you will already be aware of our marketing campaign and of the various 'storylines' reported. You will also be aware of the fact that a further 1000 copies of this Wigtown based newsletter have been ordered for distribution in Aberdeenshire. But tonight's late news, owing to the time difference, is even more exciting!

One storyline, in particular, stands out head and shoulders above the rest for us, and that is the story of 'FILEAS FROG'. The tale began in edition 14, May 2007, as an introduction to the monthly charity fundraising event with which we are involved. ( see http://www.scottishwebauction.co.uk ) But in this same edition, we mentioned that 'FILEAS FROG' was on his way to Scotland from Toronto. At that point, we didn't know he had to travel all the way from China, so his arrival was a little delayed. By the time June edition was printing, 'FILEAS FROG' had been to Wigtown and then promptly jetted off for Sulphur Springs, in Arkansas. Please keep in mind that, at all times, 'FILEAS FROG' carries news of Wigtown and of our online trading associates. Now, I am absolutely delighted to announce that NYK Media has just received an official order from our associate in Sulphur Springs, Arkansas for copies of our little Wigtown based newsletter to be distributed in their town!

THIS IS A TRULY AMAZING STORY - AND WIGTOWN IS WELL AND TRULY SET TO BE AT THE CENTRE OF THIS GLOBAL TALE. Unfortunately, I am not at liberty to divulge any further information relating to the details of this project. Suffice to say, it is already gathering momentum and it only began in April, so I don't know where it will go from here.

Wigtown News Update

More good news regarding 'Now You Know' monthly magazine - In addition to the copies supplied to our handful of local stockists, a further 550 FREE copies will be distributed around Wigtown next month. This should guarantee, at least, that more locals are aware of the newsletter and the added benefit that brings with it. This is in addition to the 2000 copies that are being distributed by various associates around the UK and, not forgetting, the copies that wing their way to Ireland, the United States, Canada and Europe. Previously, we coped well with the production of 5000 x 20 page newspapers per month, and the distribution proved to be the most difficult aspect but, since the relaunch of this smaller publishing project, we are finding that distribution is growing faster than our production capabilities, a problem that may need addressing in the very near future. If anyone is interested in placing an advert in next week's edition, please get in contact as soon as possible. There is no need to query the price because we'll make sure that anyone can afford it - guaranteed! If you would prefer to have a flyer, bookmark or similar promotional item included in our mail-outs, costs can also be negotiated to suit the needs of those involved.

Not much of a response so far (none, to be exact) from the local book shops with regards to locating copies of our listed books, but we are still hopeful. If you missed the titles, please see item: /m25 on these messageboards and get in contact if you have them or know the whereabouts of any within town.

Finally, don't forget about 'Wigtown in Bloom' and the current 'tidy-up and make it flowery' type campaign. I believe that businesses in the area are being offered the chance to sponsor a hanging basket, tub or planter, which I think is a great idea if your business doesn't benefit from main street frontage. Please help tackle any stray weed problems by removing any little leafy rogues you may spot, and it's a great help to the organisers if you can bin any stray litter you may see. You might also like to donate any surplus 'blooms' to friends or neighbours who may not find the time to prepare their own . Every little helps, even if you aren't on the main route. We should soon have news of the confirmed route, along with dates for the litter picks and details of where (if permitted) the sponsored baskets can be hung. We believe that proposals have been put forward for the following as one of the walkabout routes starting from the County Buildings:

South Main Street
Agnew Crescent
Lightlands Terrace
Fountainblue
High Street
North Main Street

More news as it becomes available to us and please feel free to add yur own news here.

Wigtown in Bloom

The portfolio for Wigtown's entry into the Scotland in Bloom competition is currently being prepared and I would just like to let anyone concerned know that relevant information and photographs should be emailed as soon as possible, as there are only a couple of weeks remaining until completion date and judging. To date, we are still unaware of the exact route the judges will follow although, to the best of my knowledge, various suggestions have been discussed - any updates on this regarding confirmation would be appreciated. You can email any information / submissions to nykmedia@aol.com

The Booksellers Association have sent out a warning to all retailers that many businesses could fall foul of the law because they haven't followed the rules on 'No Smoking' signs. Businesses need to check the finer details of the regulations. The rules relating to smoke-free signs are very prescriptive and require businesses to have the correct size, wording and logo, as well as to ensure that they are displayed in the right locations in smoke-free buildings and vehicles. Retailers that fail to have all of this in place could find themselves facing a fine from the enforcing authorities.
Signs on buildings that can be accessed by members of the public must be A5 in size, or 70mm in diameter for a sign in smoke-free vehicles, and display the no-smoking logo of a burning cigarette in a red circle with a diagonal line through it.
The sign must also include the wording "No Smoking. It is against the law to smoke on these premises"
The words "in these premises" can be substituted to make the sign more personal to the premises.
We're not sure that this applies equally to Scotland, but we gather that a no smoking sign on staff loos, for example, is expected.

WIGTOWN NEWS UPDATE

'Wigtown in Bloom' - The judges' route has now been finalised and we are in the latter stages of publishing the 'Wigtown in Bloom' portfolios. Judging, locally, takes place from 10am on Wednesday 1st August, on the same day as Wigtown Agricultural show, so fingers crossed that we get a fine day for impressing the visitors. For anyone interested, there will be a walk of the agreed route taking place on Tuesday evening, 31st July, leaving from the County Buildings at around 7.30pm.

During actual judging, the community will be assessed on four sections:

• FLORAL DISPLAYS, for example the design and quality of horticultural features and displays, and standards of maintenance

• Sustainable development and biodiversity initiatives, such as projects to conserve energy, protect wildlife and habitats, the promotion of green transport, initiatives for waste minimisation, recycling, re-use and composting

• Environmental quality, for example the absence of litter, dog fouling, graffiti, fly-posting and weeds

• Public participation and community involvement across all sections.

If Wigtown is to be entered into the 2008 campaign, then we can expect an unannounced visit from judges sometime during spring.

It is not too late to join this campaign and all help is appreciated from local residents and traders alike. Even if it amounts to no more than responsible dog owners clearing up any mess, making sure you don't drop litter and ensuring that adequate litter disposal bins are available for use during peak time, every effort helps.

Local litter picks, weeding, watering and planting has been going on around us for some time now and, on 13th July, the eight sponsored fuchsia baskets were hung around the gardens & bowling green. A watering schedule has been agreed to counteract any dry spells.

Hopefully, you have all received your copies of the 'Now You Know' newsletter. August edition will be available within the next couple of weeks and we hope to have it distributed door-to-door. Any comments or submissions are welcome and we offer extremely affordable advertising rates for any local traders who would like to promote their business in forthcoming editions. As well as local door-to-door delivery, the newsletter goes out nationally via several independent distributors. (July's distribution was over 2,500 copies). We also have our international subscribers in USA, Canada and France and, not forgetting, our hundreds of readers from Arkansas. (Special thanks go to Peggy Smith and to Applegarth's Emporium in Sulphur Springs.)

As always, Wigtown residents and traders are welcome to post FREE on these messageboards so, if you have any news, views or announcements to make, don't forget to add them here when you are spreading the word.

If you have any questions or queries relating to NYK Media, Wigtown.info web site or 'Now You Know' monthly newsletter, please do not hesitate to ask.

Wigtown News Update

Many thanks to those who attended the e-sellers seminar on Thursday 23rd. We look forward to hosting another one very soon. Thanks, too, for items donated for inclusion in the monthly charity auctions. This month, funds raised will be split between Marie Cure Cancer Care and Bravehearts Childrens Trust.

Saturday 25th was the annual Save the Children fundraising coffee morning in the County Buildings. This event was a great success, being well attended and raising almost £500 in funds by way of coffee, cakes, bric-a-brac.

This weekend, being the beginning of what is termed the 'YDC' charity event, we have included some very special items...

HELP WRITE THE BOOK

THE ADVENTURES OF FILEAS FROG (as described in last month's 'Now You Know' newsletter)

THIS IS GUARANTEED A 100% GENUINE OFFER!

If you like writing, then this is your golden opportunity to take part in a fantastic project that's being co-ordinated from Wigtown, Scotland's national book town.
NYK Media will be collating the book for final publication in 2008. Everyone who has taken part in the writing will have the opportunity to see their work in print when this amazing publication in complete.
This golden opportunity is being offered EXCLUSIVELY through eBid online auctions and, each time a prospective bidder wins the right to write, we donate the proceeds to charity.

Because this is such a TOP SECRET and HIGHLY CLASSIFIED mission, only one agent can be recruited for each 'stage' of the project. Could it be you? You must guarantee anonymity, you must promise not to divulge this secret - the success of the mission lies firmly in the hands of the current writer. After complaints about particular drivers & road racing in and around Wigtown (cars & motor bike/s), information was sought relating to such offences before someone is seriously injured or killed in a collision on our local roads. (I won't refer to such an event as an accident, as there is nothing accidental about a crash involving an irresponsible driver!

It is recommended that these irresponsible drivers should not be confronted, however, in a very helpful response from Sergeant Neil Hewitson (No. 341) of Dumfries & Galloway Police, the following was intimated.

In relation to particular 'events' involving speeding cars and general anti-social behaviour that took place between Saturday evening and 04.36am Sunday morning (08/09/2007 - 09/09/2007) and any similar incidences:

"We now have new legislation in place to deal with this type of incident. It is covered under Anti Social Behaviour Act 2005. It should not be necessary to collect signatures of complaint, all that is required is for you to note the reg. number of the vehicle(s) concerned and the type of driver behaviour and how this alarms or annoys you. Once you have accrued this information then simply phone the Police and we will have a Police Officer attend in an effort to trace the offender. If they do not trace the offender at that time they can still issue the driver or owner with an official warning. This means that if they are caught doing this type of behaviour within a year we will seize their vehicle from them. They will then have to pay at least £105 to get the vehicle back from us. They may also be charged with careless or reckless driving which carries penalty points and a fine.

It would do no harm whatsoever to photograph these vehicles carrying out their manoeuvres. That would be excellent evidence. Dumfries and Galloway Police can now be contacted on one single number namely 0845 600 5701. This is the only number in use throughout the Force."

I hope the above information is of some help to those of you who have voiced concerns.

WIGTOWN IN BLOOM and OTHER NEWS

Following on from a recent meeting held in the County Buildings on 15th October, there was no final decision made regarding Wigtown's entry into the 2008 'Beautiful Scotland' competition. A second meeting has been scheduled for 6th November at 7pm, again in the County Buildings, when it is hoped there will be a good turn out and additional support for the project. Any change to this date or time will be posted here. ("Beautiful Scotland is the largest environmental campaign in Scotland for communities who are working to improve and enhance their local area.")

This year, thanks to the excellent work carried out by junior members of the local community, Wigtown won the 'Special Endeavour' award after judges were impressed by the Seaview garden project. This will, hopefully, continue into next year and beyond. It is also hoped that we can encourage some of the local youths to participate in a new 'Wigtown in Bloom' website project whether or not the decision is taken to enter the official 2008 competition. I now have a copy of the 'entrants manual', which should make entry conditions, such as the portfolio, far easier to understand, prepare and collate.

During the October 15th meeting, various figures were brandished in relation to the amount of cash invested into other towns and villages for the purposes of their participation in the Beautiful Scotland project. Wigtown, apparently, has very little (if any) financial support coming from Dumfries & Galloway Council and it is apparent that the overall decision to continue being a part of the 'Beautiful Scotland' campaign lies firmly in the hands of those individuals who strive to make and keep Wigtown a 'good' place to live. I sincerely hope that their efforts are rewarded and can only praise those who play an active part. The townspeople and members of the business community certainly put in great efforts to maintain floral displays throughout the area, though it is a little sad that our local bank cannot contribute more by way of support.

To anyone who may happen to read this and have any sort of local interest, please consider attending the next meeting. I am already aware of several ideas and suggestions, each of which warrants due consideration and, on reflection, I find myself more and more drawn to the conclusion that Wigtown SHOULD strive for excellence, despite the fact that 'Beautiful Scotland' categorises our neighbourhood as a large village and not, as it rightfully is, a town. Unfortunately, their group entry classifications are assessed on population statistics through the electoral role and Wigtown falls short of the allocated 'town' figures. As unfair as this may sound, those are the rules and we cannot shun the opportunity to be included in 'Beautiful Scotland'. Wigtown deserves recognition in many areas, not just as a book town relying on the existing book-related businesses to ensure the area flourishes in generations to come. I see no harm in seeking suitable sponsors to ensure that Wigtown is in bloom for many years to come. If you are unable to contribute on a financial basis, perhaps you can contribute a little of your time to help keep Wigtown tidy. As for starting fundraising, it is hoped that a tabletop sale can be arranged towards the end of January. Bulb planting schemes are in the process of being formulated right now if anyone in interested in taking part.

Another point raised recently, on more than one occasion, is that relating to speeding cars and 'boy-racers' who have, allegedly, been retaliating to any form of reprimand. On this note, I would just like to say that at no point have I ever been sworn at, threatened or made to feel intimidated by any of these youths. Yes, there is certainly a problem with noisy exhausts and excessive speeding, yes, there are probably laws being broken and, yes, everyone is fully aware of who the culprits are, but why complain when, at the end of the day, there still remains an attitude of 'I don't really want to get involved?' I could add that on Saturdays, in particular, these same youths would be unable to park anywhere near the square owing to the numbers of illegaly parked cars owned by the supposedly 'sensible, older drivers' who are just as likely to 'accidentally' litter the streets and make that area unsafe for pedestrians, albeit their choice of timing is more sociable. The youths act out their juvenile 'stunts' through, I would think, boredom and lack of anything better to do. For the responsible adults, there is no such excuse. I wonder if any of these bored youths would like to be involved in any of the current or future-planned community events? Or perhaps we could form an alternative to youths speeding and, instead, all meet up in their streets and play our music, revving our engines and then proceeding to convoy around the town at 29.9 mph between the hours of 10pm Saturday evening and around 3 or 4am Sunday? If you do have any serious worries or complaints about bad drivers (young or otherwise) I'm sure Sgt Dillon, or anyone else on duty, would greatly appreciate names, times, places, descriptions and registration numbers of those causing offence. Just call him and give him the details - 0845 600 5701. An anonymous call just won't 'cut the mustard' if you are having real problems but if it's the actual calling that deters you, you can simply send an email. Details here -> http://www.dumfriesandgalloway.police.uk/contacts/intro.htm

Finally, for this early morning news bulletin, how did you all enjoy your trip to Becherel and how is Wigtown's twin book town progressing? http://www.becherel.com/
