Topic: APSA Working Group on Collaborative Research
Printer-Friendly Page
In 2006, the APSA Council authorized an ad hoc committee, the Working Group on Collaboration, to study patterns of collaborative research in the discipline and to explore what ethical and procedural issues may follow from collaborative scholarship. Dr. Kanchan Chandra was asked to chair and conduct this study, and she was joined by Jennifer Gandhi, Emory University, Gary King, Harvard University, Arthur Lupia, University of Michigan, and Edward Mansfield, University of Pennsylvania in reviewing and commenting on the evidence.

The charge to this committee called for preparation of a report that could serve as the basis for community discussion with the discipline. We welcome your views on the evidence and the issues presented in the report (.pdf). For additional background materials, see the committee webpage at www.apsanet.org/content_43659.cfm.

Any guidelines should pay particular attention to the inherent imbalance in power between faculty and graduate students, as well as the (often unwarranted but nonetheless widespread) assumption that graduate students are not co-equal collaborators. Assuming roughly equal efforts by both a faculty member and a graduate student, it would be preferable (in my view) for the graduate student's name to come first. Note that the operative work is "efforts" rather than "contributions".
