Come celebrate the first rain-free Wednesday in weeks with the NRVBA sponsored Wed. Ride 'Round Radford. My riding has been sporadic so we’ll split into two groups. I’ll lead a 14-15 mph pace and the faster group can go on without waiting for us. Route is open to discussion but we’ve been favoring going out Little River Dam Rd, left through Graysontown, return via Dry Valley and then backside of either Wintergreen or Lovely Mt., depending upon how we feel.

Event: NRVBA Wednesday Ride ‘Round Radford
Time: 6 PM
Location: Sal’s Parking lot, Main St. Radford
Terrain: rolling to hilly
Distance: 20-25 miles
Option to stay for dinner afterward

"CAUTION" We keep getting an e-mail from Paul Smith Store & Paul Smith Shoes & Paul Smith UK Store. I do not know this person or entity so I would suggest you do not click on the links they provide on the Bulletin Board. Thus far, the post has come from two IP addresses both of which have now been blocked from future posts.

I wrecked on the road at Clover Hollow in Giles Co. The most serious injury was to my head...had a temporal bleed but didnt require brain surgery. Didnt break anything...lots of road rash. I was with 2 nurses, a preacher and preachers wife so I had all my bases covered. Those who were not giving me aid were praying...I was very lucky.

What kind of wreck did you have? The injuries were serious?

Mr. Slowsky, It is funny but I mtn biked before I ever took to the roads. I consider it to be my first biking love for sure. I was going to do the Dirty Dawg mtn bike race this sunday at mtn lake before my accident. I should take my mtn bike out on the easy trail at pandapas first... Thanks, Naomi

Naomi, I don't own a mt. bike but I concur with Don’s advice. This time last year, I was getting back on the bike after 3 broken pelvic bones, a separated shoulder, 6 weeks on a walker and two more on a cane. I was taken down by an aggressive dog. I never hesitated to get back on the bike but I was lucky to have a supportive group of riding buddies who did some slow, gentle rides with me while I was regaining my confidence and strength. Get in touch if you want company. I’m out of school for the summer and will be in and out of town, but happy to meet you for a recovery ride when I’m free. 639.6541 kcometa (at) jetbroadband.com

Naomi,

I went over the hood of a pickup in a head on collision (that was not my fault). Remarkably, I had no fear of getting back on the bike and did so right away, but have made a conscious decision to increase the amount of time spent mountain biking and trail riding vs. purely road riding. My accident could have easily been tragic. After years of refusing to mountain bike and ridiculing those who did, I very quickly realized what great fun it is. I'm pretty sure that mountain biking has made our group physically stronger as noted on a recent group road ride after several sessions of mountain biking.

Naomi, sorry to hear about your accident, I have had three, one of them flying over the handlebars, crushed my helmet, knocked the wind out of me, black and blue left hip and shoulder, scrapes and bruises on the left side, but, if nothings broken, the best thing to do is get back on the bike as soon and as safe as you can – then, apply the lessons learned from the accidents you've been involved in. Sooner or later every active cyclists will be involved in an accident and we just hope it’s not to serious. Secondly, share your story with others and hopefully we can learn from your experience. Hope you are okay, Don

How do you get your mojo back after a really bad wreck? (as in got flown in the big bird kind of serious) I look at my bike and want to ride it but then I just get shaky with fear. I know that this is a downer post but none of my friends that bike have had something this serious happen to them and I need some imput on what to do.

We plan to take the motor home as a sleeping/sag vehicle with folks taking turns driving sag or doing the drive forward-ride back to the group routine. Miles per day and how many days it takes is flexible at this point based on who would like to go. Harrisonburg is 150 miles via I-81 so we should be able to ride home in about 3 days.

Pete,
That sounds like a great ride. How many days out are you talking about...and what are you thinking for overnight accomodations & food? How many miles on the parkway? I'd like to join you but my bike doesn't like to sleep under trees. Be neat to get a good sized group together.

Dan Grubb, Bob Piscura, Gene Holt and I plan to ride the Shenandoah Valley Century (or at least a part of it) then ride our bikes home via the Parkway. Registration for the ride ($12) can be done at http://www.svbcoalition.org/events/century/ I rode a part of this ride last year and found it to be a first class ride (clover leaf pattern with one common reststop and fresh grilled panini sandwiches at the end). Our wives plan to ride along but we do not think they will enjoy our company enough to ride home with us so there would be car-pool options.

Kenny, that's the "Big Walker Century Ride". Check the web site, charity ride leaves from Geo Wythe HS in W'ville, 7:30 Sat, 6/20.
I haven't made my plans yet.
