I think the best practice everyone can do is to announce their score when you hole out or are told to pick up your ball.
Pet peeve of mine is when the person with the scorecard stays silent and just writes a number down for their score. The person with the score card needs to announce their score.
All scores should be known before teeing off on the next hole. Staying silent until the near the end of the round only results in a bigger misunderstanding about what the score was.
