Does anyone know if the US Post Office had problems with the latest issue of the Runner's Rag that was assembled at the last Club meeting? Carol said they were prepared for mailing but neither I (in Newton, NH), MJ in Haverhill, MA, or Paul in Plaistow has received one yet. I am looking forward to Ken Tripp's opus. Has anyone gotten a Rag who wasn't at the mailing to get theirs hand-delivered to them?
Dale Bob  9
11-19-2006 04:27 PM ET (US)
I have not received the Rag yet. Was it mailed?
Linda Long  10
11-19-2006 05:14 PM ET (US)
I received the Rag last week, and that was after it was forwarded from my old address in NH.
Lisa  11
11-19-2006 06:51 PM ET (US)
I have not received a runners rag for at least 8-9 months - possibly longer (maybe February 2006????).
Leslie  12
11-19-2006 07:03 PM ET (US)
Linda, Was it realy the Rag or just the package of entry forms and Christmas party announcement? I got that package but not the newsletter.
Ken Tripp  13
11-19-2006 08:37 PM ET (US)
The last I had heard, the rag was put together for mailing at the meeting, but wasn't sent out with the applications because of there was not enough stamps. However, I was told it was going to be sent out mid last week, so if you haven't got it yet, I hope you get it soon. If you haven't got one within the next week , please send me a message at ktripp@sepracor.com and I will send one to you.

The last rag went out in May, so it's been a while. I apologize for that, but I did put a lot into this last issue and I hope everyone likes it. I think Leslie lied to me when she said how much goes into the rag. I may have been duped. :) (it doesn't matter because I enjoy doing it) I already have stuff for the next rag; however, I am always looking for stories.
Leslie  14
11-20-2006 07:40 AM ET (US)
The Circle could save lots of money that's being spent on postage if the Rag were linked to the home page and people could read it on line and print it out if they wanted to. The number of hard copies being mailed would be significantly reduced. Members could choose to remove themselves from the mailing list if they planned to view the Rag on line.

Okay, Ken, I admit I understated the time required to publish the Rag. Haven't you ever sold a used car without disclosing allthe negatives? : )
Ken Tripp  15
11-20-2006 08:58 AM ET (US)
Changing the distribution policy of the rag will have to be something that will be discussed at future board meetings. But you are right, between the cost of copying and mailing, an electronic link could save some $$$. The major problem would be that not everyone has computer access. Definitely something to think about though?

Did you like the last version of the rag? (if you got it?)
Ken Tripp  16
11-20-2006 10:11 AM ET (US)
Is the Garmin 301 new or used? What is the reason for selling it?
Tom Miller  17
11-20-2006 11:09 AM ET (US)
I have it on "good authority" that the rag wasn't mailed until Saturday 11/18, so be patient. You should have it to read while digesting your turkey.
Leslie  18
11-20-2006 04:54 PM ET (US)
Patience is a virtue! I got my Rag in today's mail and love the new look, the pics, and stories. Great job, Ken, and thanks for the note of thanks directed at me.

The Garmin 301 is used but is as good as new (all the stuff in the original box). I upgraded to a pricier model that works better in the woods. Of course, this time of year, both would work quite well in the woods because the leaves are down. My new one cost $350, so my old one at $100 is a real bargain. No chance that I'll give it as a Yankee Swap gift. Nice try, Kristen. : )

11-20-2006 07:12 PM ET (US)
You definitely deserve the thank you for your contribution to the rag. As I said, it's overdue.

Thanks for the info on the Garmin. I already have a 201 and 301. I was asking for a friend and I'll let you know if he's interested. How's do you like the new one. I also do a lot of trails and that is my main complaint for the 301.
Leslie  20
11-21-2006 08:02 AM ET (US)
I do a lot of trail running with my dog. I never get a weak signal with my 305. It's quite reliable. The 301 is good for someone who runs mainly on the roads.

The 305 has been working extremly well for me in the woods and while running on some pretty foggy mornings. I have talked to many who used them during the Reach the Beach Relay and found them to be very accurate. Works well downloading to Google Earth Plus and Motion Based mapping. Runners Alley gives WCRC members a 10% discount, so would be 10% off the $350. price :) I am looking forward to using it on the back country XC trails this winter.

LOCO is directing a new half-marathon in April 2007, for more more details> http://www.locorunning.com/greathalf.php . Exeter Hospital has already signed on as lead sponsor. It is a beautiful course and we're looking to drum up early buzz (and input) for the event. Soooooooo, we're pulling together an informal "course preview" run this Sunday, November 26th. We'll be meeting at Newmarket High School at 8:30AM. There will also be a 9-miler group for those who aren't up for the full 13.1. The current forecast for Sunday looks great! Please join us.

I am planning to GPS the run to download the course for others to view. Please contact me or the LOCO guys if you have any questions or need directions.

It would be great to get the Rag online. In the NSC bike club we post the newsletter to the website where you can download it or read it online. The file is a PDF format whih can anyone on any operating system can read. There is software which you can the publisher file into PDF file format without loosing any effect of the original.

Also, I will be doing a special training program for thr Great Bay Half Marathon, Presented by Exeter Hospital. Detail will be posted latter this week on the loco running website and Exeter Hospital.
You all have a good Thanksgiving!

Not to be critical, and this may be stating the obvious BUT- a lot of time and work goes into many club functions-directing, mailing, writing, and web maintenance( this site has to be screened by someone-thanks Dave). We're all getting busier and busier and busier--say that's what's happened to my training, damn life gets in the way. AND the WCRC has no fees So... mistakes are gonna happen.
We are getting more and more volunteers for mailings which is good, but if more people stepped up and helped out it would be even better. And one of the best ways to help the club is to tell people all the great things we do for the running community-esp. young runners. Remind people esp. the IAAMs(sic. Camire-It IS All About ME types) that the running world is about giving back to the sport. Supporting the sport at all levels-youth, H.S.-as Well as open-track, as well as distance running.

What an event the turkey trot is....hundreds of runners, joggahs, baby strollers, pukers, running pilgrims and human turkeys.
Louiseee Rossetti took many a scalp, out kicking the likes of many an athlete-AND she didn't have a number.
Only down note was Mr. Maine Randall couldn't make it having had surgery.

John - Idly sitting here on a Saturday morning, I looked back at coolrunning records for t-day trot and yes it is a record number of runners. Interestingly enough the times have not changed dramatically. Mr Wile may have the details on pre-1996 times but it looks like 16:08 is the record time. 2000-Eric Burgess and 1996-Craig Watcke.

On another note, the course was definately a faster course 10 years ago, especially the middle section after trav's memorial. There was a lot more hard packed soil before all the wood chips were added. I remember Watcke and I dueling it out that year and the course was a good 10-15 seconds faster than it is today.

Anyway here is the chronolology

Year # time
2006 884 16:09
2005 695 16:25
2004 644 16:38
2003 755 16:14
2002 600 17:25 (SNOW)
2001 749 16:37
2000 570 16:08 (Eric Burgess)
1999 562 16:17
1998 481 16:39
1997 352 17:21 (Ice)
1996 300 16:08 (Craig Watcke)
1995 184 16:30

Mr Wile - do you have the stats on pre-1995? It would make for a cool history of the race that we could keep up to date on the web site.
JWebb  34
11-25-2006 04:41 PM ET (US)
Yes the course was faster before wood chips, the stone gravel hill and horses. But we have haven't helped matters by getting older and slower. I've done all 17,injured or not. This race is the only streak I have. Were you there for the first one in 1990? Gary Passler has run them all as well injured or not. Maybe Don Hennigar? Anyone else?
Don Hennigar  35
11-25-2006 05:13 PM ET (US)
Yes, Webber, I have run them all on Thanksgiving. The course must get longer each year- can't think of any other reason why our times get slower. Ted Jones has done them all also I think.

I will be getting the numbers from Manning and will probably be at the December meeting with more. Thank you all once again!! Happy Holidays.

If any of you women runners have any running shoes-preferably racing and/or cross-country flats- that you aren't using or are discarding, I could put them to use with my indoor team. great job again Vicki and Chris(we missed ya) at MCR
race went well, good times had by all.
WC members and board members work very hard on this:
Dave Camire the brains and director of it all. without him never would have lasted in the very healthy state
Labrode does much of the grunt work-marking course etc.
Sharon is the under-appreciated keeper of the minutes and treasurer.
we'll get 'em next year (I was told by a reliable source that if MVS didn't win this year, they were gonna pack it in and not even try to be competitive)

I'd like to second Mike's sentiments. So many people put a lot of hard work into this event and every WCRC event and they deserved to be thanked and recognized. I can't imagine how difficult it is to organize this race through all the different towns and as far as I can tell, it all goes off seamlessly. Excellent job.

It was also great to see all the WCRC members out in force. Running is generally an individual sport and this is one time where we are a team. Congratulation to all who participated.

A BIG thank you to everyone who contributed to yesterday’s Santa’s Toy Trot. We had a record number of entrants (300) and I would guess a record number of toys donated. This was my first experience directing a Circle race and all the help I got made the day very enjoyable. It was like having one of those "easy buttons" from Staples. I want to thank everyone who contributed to the success of the event. Thanks to Carol who seemed to be everywhere, Timmy and Amy who help with shirts and hall setup, Tom and Vicki for doing a terrific job with the course, Kristen and Brian for successfully feeding 300 very hungry people, Mike for running a very efficient finish line, Pam for computer and finish line duties, Ken for pre-registration work, Stan for finish line and registration, Cathy for registration, Cat for helping serve refreshments, Gary for guiding folks to the correct finish chute, Prez John for pre/post race help, Dave L for marking the course and MC’ing the awards ceremony, Ted J for driving the lead vehicle, Ted W for his moral support and for being there. We also had help from Joe Agneta from MVS at the finish and Glenn Stewart from GLRR at registration and the finish. Most of all I want to thank Bob Randall and Sharon Yu for all their efforts this year and for past years. Bob secured the school, coordinated with the police and got the bulk of the sponsorship. Not bad for a guy laid up after major surgery. Sharon, although she wanted to take the year off, ended up being co-director. She managed the pre-registration, fielded calls, managed the money and helped keep the operation running very smoothly. I apologize if I missed anyone. There were so many folks helping it was tough to keep track of everyone. You all can take satisfaction in knowing you made a child's Christmas merrier.

The 26th Annual New Years Day Classic (a.k.a. Hangover Classic) 10K and 5K Road Races will be run at 11:00 AM on Monday, January 1, 2007. Great location at Salisbury Beach!!! Optional Ocean Plunge!!! Cash and merchandise awards, long sleeve tee-shirts, classic mugs, and post-race party. Race day registration, post-race awards and the not-to-be-missed post-race party all at Bevy B’s. Participate in "A New Years Day Tradition". Organized by WCRC. Visit the WCRC website for more information and for on-line registration.

As you all know, the “Hangover” is a major event for WCRC: 3 events (5k, 10k, and ocean plunge), lots of runners/plungers, lots of fun, but also a lot to do on race day. If you anticipate being too hungover to run, please consider helping out on race day. FREE HANGOVER CLASSIC SWEATSHIRTS (a HOT item last year) will be given to all volunteers who can show up at 9AM on race day to help out. If you can help, please email Bob Manning at cmanning55@comcast.net and let him know in advance (we don’t want him to be a scrooge from worry during the holidays).

OK it is 2007! Regular non-running folk always subscribe to the ritual of resolutions. Surely there are runners out there that have set goals for 2007. I'll start....I am hoping to get back under 4:30 for the mile. Might be a pipe dream but I would be thrilled if I could run under 4:30 after turning 40 this September.

Also, congrats to Circle distance guy Ken Tripp who ran his first mile race. Ken and I went up to the Millenium Mile up in Londonderry on Dec 31st. Ken now has an appreciation of the pre-race jitters associated with running a mile event. Hopefully he has been bitten by the bug!

The millenium mile was a lot of fun and anyone looking for a super fast mile should put this on your racing schedule. Chris failed to mention in his last post that he ran 4:21, a new PR for him in the mile; I then finished over 21 second behind him - a PR for me, but it's the first mile race I've ever done.

As for 2007 goals, I do hope to add a little speed to my running. Mainly, I'd like to hit 16:30 for the 5K and then go back to some longer races and hit 1:15 to 1:16 for the 1/2 marathon and then maybe even reenter the marathon world and try to get into the mid 2:40s. Also hoping to hit 1:13 to 1:14 at the Mountain. On paper, it sounds so easy, but... Another goal is to get a little lighter, i.e. lose weight. I don't think that I'm fat, but when ever I see pictures of myself with other runners, I look so much wider.

I will run the millenium mile again and maybe even High Street. The mile is a strange event if you've never run on before. I think it was the 3/4 mark that I finally realized that I needed to run harder because the race was basically over. As for catching the bug... I did get diagnosed with Strep thoat on January 1, so I caught something...

Received this question from Coach Abu @ Governer Dummer regarding our annual XC meet against GDA.

**********
On which day would we draw more Circle runners: Sat., 9/15, or Mon., 9/17?

Also, would a relay format attract more (each runner runs 1.5 mi. on our course)?
**********

This is a long way off, but I imagine Abu needs to figure out his schedule. Comments?

9/15 is Reach the Beach weekend which would filter out some WCRC'rs. 9/17 would be less competition with races, but the hour becomes a problem (i.e. getting to gda for a 4:45 start is a problem for many people with real jobs. I doubt that the distance is an issue (if its too short its not worth driving there to do).

I would try to make it providing there isn't a "pub series" race that weekend. The schedule isn't posted yet, but for anyone who may be interested it's a good series of races with good parties after each one. They can be a bit far (Cape Cod or RI) but many are closer. It's nice to get out of the area and run somewhere new. The first one is at Doyle's in Jamaica Plain on 4/22 I think.

a relay is a great idea-however the kids may kick our ass over 1.5. Make it 3x5k. XC and we have a good chance
man Abu plans ahead.

I get out in time for a 4:45 race and boy I felt like I've dealt with a lot of reality. I get Johnny, Jose, and Elvira Reality in front of me every day, telling me real things-often dealing with suggestions of what to do.

Fwd from Tom Miller"s e-mail.
The January meeting of the Winner’s Circle Running Club will be held at 6:30 PM on Thursday January 11, upstairs at the Winner’s Circle. On the agenda for this meeting is the nomination of members for election to the 2007 WCRC Board of Directors. Elections will be held at the WCRC Annual Party in February (tentatively scheduled for Saturday evening, Feb 10). If you think someone would be good on the WCRC Board, show up and nominate them! If you think you would be good on the WCRC Board, bring a friend to nominate you! (or buy me a beer and I’ll nominate you myself). Also on the agenda, the upcoming Frigid Five in Newburyport, the ever popular Run-To-The-Beach 30k, the April Fools 4 Miler, the Boston marathon (club entries, volunteers, club bus), and more.

Can someone tell me what the course is for the frigid fiver. Specifically I can't remember which street to turn on from High St and when you get to Mosely Pines at the end of Merrimac St I wasn't sure which street you take back to the Bresnehan. Thanks.

Hi Derek, From what I recall you go down High to Market (YWCA) then onto Merrimac until you get to Mosely Pines. You go left up Spofford Street and at the top shoot left (right goes to Maudslay) onto Ferry Road. Just a straight shot down Ferry coming out by Famous Pizza and then down High Street until you go into the Bresnahan school.

Following up meeting.
Chris Kealey, Dave Camire, Ken Tripp and myself have formed a committee to explore having more organized coaching for WCRC.
If you have any input please get in touch with us or post something here.

We are exploring:
the best place to do it.
The time period( ie summer, fall, spring etc.
How many/Who coaches(I have done it for the past several years, feel well qualified, and would love to continue BUT if anyone has others or suggestions for assts/co-coaches PLEASE give input).

One thing we do want to do is have it open to all abilities. In the past we have 'scared' others off as they think it is only for hardcores like Chris,
Mike Menesale, and the like.

I'd like to see coaching running year-round. I'd like to see workouts for different types of runners that take into account their different goals. Maybe in terms of planning that would require different coaches. I'd also like to see coaching going beyond the once a week track/cross-country session and help in the development of weekly training.

I don't know if club members are wired up with Nike+, but as someone who does most of their weekday running on a treadmill in Boston before work or occasionally during lunch it is hard to feel [or get] connected to the wider club membership. So I thought I might reach out to see if any folks might be interested in keeping tabs on one another to encourage more running and to generate some virtual camaraderie.

If anyone is interested, I have sent up a Challenge in Nike+ named "Winner's Circle Running Club." It is a basic challenge to see who runs the most miles in the remaining days of the month of February. Perhaps we can get more creative once we identify if there are a significant number of WCRC members have Nike+ and that are interested in this type of on-line running community.

If you are interested shoot me an email at pfdurning@comcast.net and I then I will add you as a challenger to this challenge through Nike+.

Kind of interesting news when people continue to say American running is not like it used to be. This record (21 year standing record) was set @ the Houston Marathon last month. Amazing pace of 4:33/mile. Next time you are on a track run a 68 sec/quarter. You'd have to continue that for 52 quarters.

*******************************************
Ryan Hall sets new North American record for the Half-Marathon (59:43)

http://www.usatf.org/news/view.aspx?duid=U...2007_01_14_12_20_27

“Through 5 km in 14:05, 10 km in 28:21, 15 km in 42:21 and ten miles in 45:33. He certainly passed the 20 km mark faster than his own USA 20-K record (57:54), but there was no official time taken at that point. An estimate from the lead truck was 57:06.”

I've always thought the club sponsored training sessions were one of the best programs the club has to offer its members. If we are about running, attracting new members and helping existing members become better runners than this is a great program. I'd love to see it run year round but that is probably a little unrealistic to begin with. The twice a year program, spring/fall has worked well. I also like the combonation of track and cross country training. Track in the spring and cross country in the fall.
The comradery that develops is just great and helps everyone push and perform better.
What has not worked well in the past is the low member turnout. This has been a problem lately. Mike has done a great job organizing and devoting his time to make these sessions work and it is a little embarrassing when only three or four people show up. Several years ago we had 20 people show up which worked extremely well as the group broke up into several natural groups based on ability/speed. This resulted in a great amount of comradery developing and everyone looked forward to having a great time running with the group each week. This worked so well for the members that several of the people ended up winning most improved runner of the year awards as a result of their hard work. Great for them and proof that the sessions work.
Well as you can see I think the speed sessions are well worth the effort. Mike is doing a great job and all we need to do is convince the club members to participate.I'd like to see the club offer this as a benefit to the members and have an extremely reduced fee as an incentive for members to attend.
Let's keep this great club program going. Thanks to all the coaches who have showed up every week over the years.

The Mt. Washington lottery is posted and I've already gotten several requests for club numbers. If you missed the lottery and are still interested in running please email me for consideration for a club number. As in the past priority will be given out based on service to the club, rejection from the lottery, and filling of teams.

Also if you are running the Boston Marathon and haven't contacted me about teams please do so. I haven't needed bib numbers to enter people so just let me know your name and age.

Sharing photos on the club site is an excellent idea, especially if it's easy for people to forward club photos and easy to post and view them. Seems that most other running clubs keep current photos broken down by races and other events. Is this something easily done on your flickr account? Can people just email you digital photos to add?

the club sponsored workouts will begin on May 2 and run til June 28th.
Wednesdays at 6p.m.-Fuller Track, Low St. Newburyport( tried to get Winnacunnet-further north site- but unsuccessful, perhaps in fall).
The workouts are open to everyone. We will have a 'beginners/walk-to-run' group if enough interest. For seasoned runners there will be suggested workouts with much flexibility according to goals, fitness level, and recent racing schedule.
The fee is $10 per session, or $75 for all, including a weekly training schedule. The workouts will be aimed to get people ready for the summer 'racing season', using the model that one prepares for a competitive season by doing hard workouts, then does more 'maintenance' running during this season. So there will be a logical progression to the workouts, but again with flexibility.
The coaches are myself,Mike McCormick and Laurie Gaudreau. The
club is presenting these as another option for runners to get together, runand meet. Even if you just want to come and run and hang out please do so,. No obligation and we will not be chasing people for money.
There are bathroom facilities at the site, as well as access to a dry area to stretch in case of rain. In addition there are local roads, and limited trails easily accessed as alternatives to the track.

Wow!

I just saw this after many months not checking the website...and thought I'd check in.

I'm retired from the Post Office, living in Beaverton, Oregon and working for Nike at the World Headquarters, in Human Resources. Haven't run more than a very occasional mile of walk-jog for the past 5 years, instead becoming a Scrabble expert and general dough boy.

Life is good here and I don't miss the winters. I've finally recovered the real will to run, rather than being the old guy who used to be in shape. Hood To Coast is a big deal here and I plan to get involved, altho it will likely be another year before I run it. My body doesn't have the same will that my mind has...and I'm 57.

I fondly remember the good times spent with you all, and assure you my door is always open to old running pals.

Cheers,
Falcon Eddie

We talked with him last night and he wanted to be sure you all knew that he really enjoyed meeting everyone. He said..." I came from the same place they all did. Club run from the Circle today?
I'm about to show some much needed tough love...
It has been a long time since I've done a Club run. You?
I find myself day-dreaming about the fun we ALL used to have on Thursdays, and how I wish everyone would just "show-up" again...myself included!!
I'm looking forward to some beach runs too!! Mike Fiene? Get Manning off the Green Monster, dust off the Red truck, have Gary paddle his way out "the mouth", Sue grab Kathy (hmmn,...didn't sound right), toss a flare under the "Exeter contingent", Speed-dial Kingston's trio, find Wile (nice touch by the way slipping those kids some cash for iced-tea...on the way to the beach...I remember sh_t like that), alert Joanne, the 2-Ted's & Allie, a half-dozen coaches, Yu grab a box of Cheese-itz, ME-(Mainers) a cooler full O'beer & letz join the Regulars (i.e. Labrode, Millers, etc.)...so we can make this spring/summer happen!! I hate to admit it, but since my injuries & moving to Maine...I've become a non-participating club member...something I used to "harp-on" all the time!! I just don't like it. Here's to bringing "running" back to the Circle!! I'm back starting TODAY!! I'm hoping to have this year's board support this mission...Ciao.

Kantara, that is...I'm a "user"...LOL.
Mike, I tried a NEW shoe at Marathon Sports while in Boston. I think the name is Equalon or something similar. You can correct me now...
Point being it finally happened...Nike managed to create a replacement for the Kantara. Also, the insoles have been re-designed!! It provides much more rear/mid foot support & heel lift....as well as maintains cushioning...perhaps even greater cushioning...if you can believe it. I'm not certain if the new insoles will be the standard in all shoes going forward, but this shoe comes equipped with them. No need to add insoles to these puppies. I was impressed & plan to try them when my Kantara supply fizzles. The cost, however, was higher.
Thanks for responding...

Hi everyone,

The Newburyport News is going to do a story on the club and I'd like your input.

What makes the club great and what is our role? What kind of cool or exotic races have you run? How many marathons? Ironmen??

Why do run and are you new to the sport? What makes running so great in our area? What is your opinion on recreational running today?

Feel free to post here or send me an email chris.kealey@thermofisher.com

I've been a Winner's Circle member for a few years but I've been running their races since I began about 15 years ago. I'm 52 now with seven marathons (4 Boston)and countless 5K, 10K and 5 mile races. The Circle keeps the competitive urge fun whether running or helping out on race day. They are an asset to the greater Newburyport area and the Merrimac Valley.

I have just moved to Newburyport from Bend, Oregon and would love to joing your running club. I would also like to extend an offer to club members and their family and friends. In Bend, I was a massage therapist, personal trainer, spin instructer and cycling coach. I have recently started working at Therapeutic Arts Massage on 8 Harris St. a few doors behind the library in Newburyport. I owned my own massage therapy business in Bend that specialized in sports massage and would like to have a strong emphasis on sports massage in Newburyport also. Until July 31, 2007, I will be offering $45 60 minute massage sessions. This is a savings of $25. I look forward to running with all of you and also seeing you in my massage studio. If you would like to schedule a massage, please call me at 978-914-1333 or e-mail at therapeuticarts@yahoo.com

Not sure if anyone in the club is interested, but Patti Dillon & Bill Rodgers will be hosting a runners clinic at the Portsmouth Track on Friday June 1st at 6:00pm Patti will also be running the Rye 10K on June 2nd

11th Annual Rye By-the-Sea Races to host world-class runner, Patti Dillon

Patti Dillon is the honored guest at this year’s weekend events. During her career, Patti held every American distance record from the 5 mile to the marathon, and the world records in the ½ marathon and 30k. Patti took 2nd place in the Boston Marathon 3 years in a row, and she also was the first American woman to run the marathon in under 2 ½ hours! Patti was ranked as the #1 female distance runner in the world in 1980 and 1981. She, along with Bill Rodgers (marathon record-holder and winner of Boston and New York Marathons), will begin with a runner’s clinic at Portsmouth High School on Friday, June 1 @ 6p.m. Saturday, June 2, she will run in the 10K event, as well as conduct the awards ceremony.

Tom,
The club runs have become so thinly attended in recent weeks that I was looking forward to the Fugawi event. I thought only winners of the lottery could run Mt Wash, so probably most Circle members wouldn't be doing it.
btw: Thought I might see you at yesterday's Quad Pack Monadnock 10M - it would probably be good training for Mt Wash; not as steep but longer. Certainly the last 2 miles were brutal.

High Street Mile - new course.

FYI the course has been recertified by Steve Vaitones as follows (Course marked with yellow paint):

Start is 4'5" west of pole 62 at the intersection of Ferry and Story coming in on the right

The finish at the storm drain on the school side of High St opposite Carter St (middle section of High School wall)

1/4 = 44'9" before storm drain at High and Highland (after Myrtle)

1/2 = after Forester on left, 9'2" before pole 91-90 on right (before
Columbus)

3/4 = 66'7" before storm drain at Lafayette (after Rawson House)

 Hi Chris,

I'm a member of the Somerville Road Runners, and we're throwing Louise
Rossetti a birthday party next Thursday, which will coincide with our
Thursday night run at Khoury's state spa. We'd like to extent an invite
to Winner's Circle, as it was mentioned that Louise is also a member of
Winner's Circle. Heck, even if she isn't, come anyway.

Winner's Circle at Mount Washington MOVIE

I took some video at the mountain last weekend and put this together. It skips a bit the first time you play it, but works fine the second time.

By the way, that's Mike Fiene throwing water at Sue Passler, but then he's nice and hands it to Sharon Yu. Sue, I'd' get him back.

Thank you everyone for helping out with "the Mile". 3 new age group records:

Male 30-39
Stanley Kipchumba 35 4:16 2007

Female 40-49
Zofia Wieciorkowska 44 5:05 2007

284 runners ran.

I believe this was the biggest HSM ever. It is only through the efforts of the entire club coming together that this race can run as smoothly as it does. And I get the added benefit of actually still being able to run it! Below is the list of members and others that made this happen ( I am sure I missed someone). Christmas in August? Not really, but WCRC treasurer Rob Robertson recently found some checks to WCRC that were never deposited, written by WCRC members to pay for dinner at the WCRC Christmas Party at Saunders last December. He intends to deposit them next week, so if you wrote a check to WCRC for the party that was never cashed … it probably will be soon. If you think this may cause you some problem, please contact Rob ASAP at robrobertsoniii@comcast.net For those of you who don't get Tom's emails consider yourselves warned!

Robbery at Maudslay. Just to give everyone a head's up. My wife's car was broken into and her credit cards stolen on Sunday Morning 8/26 when she was running. The perp may have been a white male in a green pick-up truck. The perp may live in the Stratham NH area as he ran up 2500 in charges at Home Depot, Wal-Mart and Staples. A police report was filed with NBPT PD and the credit card companies are investigating.

If anyone runs there be on the lookout for suspicious activity or if you see a green pick-up truck there.

Who knows it could be a runner or even someone in the club so if anyone knows anyone who goes to Maudslay and has a green pick-up track, let me or the police know.

Jack, I find your post very offensive. Apparently you don't have much regard for your fellow club members.
I am white, run, belong to the club, live in Stratham and own a green pickup and guess what, I shop at Home Depot, Wal-Mart and Staples.
I am guessing I'm not the only one that finds your post a bit distasteful and presumptuous.
TimmyP  149
08-28-2007 11:07 PM ET (US)
Not knowing who Jack is I suspect he will make the next club meeting with the NPD to question all the NH runners who drive pickup trucks AND who live in the Stratham area AND who like to run in Maudsley to see if we are the culprits. Will you be there Jack?

Thanks Mick. I am sure that if Lisa and TimmyP were the ones robbed they would have a completely different attitude and would want to see the perp caught. Also, if they were wise they would be able to figure out that if they use Maudslay and leave their purse and wallet in their vehicle when they go for a run, this perp is going to be sitting in the parking lot and watching them run off into the woods and they could be the next one robbed. The police said guys like this keep doing the same thing over and over again until they are caught. So Lisa and TimmyP, you could be next, but that doesn't concern you, your "personal sensitivity" is more important.

I have more information. I forgot to point out that the green pick-up truck has contractor's writing on the door but my wife didn't remember what it said. The park rangers are also investigating and they have seen a suspicious green pick-up truck frequently the past few weeks driving slowly past the parking lot and scanning the lot.

Again, I ask anyone who wants to see this guy caught and wants to run in the park without fear of being robbed and is not concerned about their own personal sensitivites, please get the plate number and call the police
Lisa  152
08-29-2007 09:46 AM ET (US)
Maybe this infor would have been nicer than eluding to this being a WCRC member and runner. I think we all appreciate the heads up, but not the finger pointing. "QUOTE FROM JACK - Who knows it could be a runner or even someone in the club so if anyone knows anyone who goes to Maudslay and has a green pick-up track, let me or the police know."

I know all to well the feelings of being robbed, having been through my door being kicked in by a herion addict and many of my families and children's things stolen and pawned for drugs. Fortunately the guy watched and waited until I left the house with my children before breaking in and he was eventually caught.

Have a nice day :)
TimmyP  153
08-29-2007 10:07 PM ET (US)
hey Jack if you had said all that it would have made it a lot more clear. you can ask anyone in the club that i'm not that sensitive personaly. You would have been better understood if you relayed the information that it was an ongoing problem and not said it might be a runner. And any runner knows to look around for people who are sitting in vehicles or driving around parking lots. Please let us NH runners know if you'll be at the next meeting. One last note tonight I did not see a green pick up with white lettering on it when i ran in Maudsley. I will also look for it Thursday when I run there also.

Hi. My name is Lisa. My sister and I are organizing an ultra team for Reach the Beach. Its a 200 mile relay in NH (www.rtbrelay.com). Sorry for the short notice, but the event takes place 9/14-15... We had our full team, but last week 2 runners dropped out. We need one male and one female to complete our team. Interested in joining the team?

There are 36 legs, but we are going to combine 3 of the legs to make the transitioning of the vehicles easier, as well as the distance taking less of a toll on our bodies. We have lodging for the night before, as well as the vehicles for transporting throughout the race. Below is a breakdown of the legs:

Runner 1 - Legs 1-3 = 23.7 miles; Legs 19-21 = 18.8 miles; total = 42.5 miles
Runner 2 - Legs 4-6 = 15.4 miles; Legs 22-24 = 18.5 miles; total = 33.9 miles
Runner 3 - Legs 7-9 = 15 miles; Legs 25-27 = 22 miles; total = 37 miles
Runner 4 - Legs 10-12 = 14.4 miles; Legs 28-30 = 14.9 miles; total = 29.3 miles
Runner 5 - Legs 13-15 = 19.7 miles; Legs 31-33 = 15.7 miles; total = 35.4 miles
Runner 6 - Legs 16-18 = 18.7 miles; Legs 34-36 = 16 miles; total = 34.5 miles

Please email me (track_all_star@yahoo.com) if you or anyone you know are interested in joining our team.

Thanks,
Lisa

Charity Slots Open for the Boston Marathon

Dear Winner's Circle Running Club,

26.2 Miles with the Boston Living Center

We are Boston Living Center and we are currently looking for applicants for our running team for the Boston Marathon. Please forward this to your members and any interested individual who want to participate in the Boston Marathon. Thank You

As the only AIDS service organization represented, the BLC is honored to be part of this elite race. Funds raised through the marathon will support BLC’s education workshops empowering members to become advocates for their own health and well-being.

The BLC is accepting applications for its 2008 “Running for Life” team.
Runners with a commitment to HIV/AIDS and an understanding of the demands of marathon training are encouraged to apply. Team members will benefit from fundraising and physical training support, and pre-and post race celebrations. Qualified runners may also join the team. Your stories/pictures from past Thanksgiving Day Maudslay XC race.

Hi everyone,

I want to get the Newburyport News & maybe another Southern New Hampshire paper to do a nice profile of the Turkey Trot. There were almost 900 runners in this race last year and yet all you heard about in the local papers was T-day football!

This race has a rich history with many personal stories. Teddy Jones running 17 years in row. Lou Ristanio taking a wrong turn. The snow & ice, the bitter cold, the recent balmy weather. John Wile has made this race one of the best races in eastern Mass and should be recognized for his efforts.

If you have stories, quotes, pictures, please send them to me: chris.kealey@thermofisher.com or post them here.

Thanks
Chris

Mt. Hood to Pacific Relay!!
An encounter with an Oregon runner on a recent biz trip alerted me to what is described as the 'World's biggest relay race' and the 'Mother of all relays' etc. It certainly looks like one hell of a unique adventure. If we can put together a Winners Circle team in the next few months before the event fills up, it would be an interesting alternative to a marathon trip (a la Big Sur or Medoc) - the date is Aug. 22, 2008.

Is there any interest in acquiring some winter track time @ Governor Dummer? We were thinking Jan - Feb, 8 weeks. Probably Monday or Tuesday night, unsure of time but probably 7PM or later. The higher the number the lower per person cost.

Just an observation but if outdoor track turnout is poor............why would paying more to run on a smaller track be that appealing?
Tom Miller  176
11-16-2007 07:56 AM ET (US)
I think the thought was that in the summer at 70 degrees you can comfortably run anywhere you want, including informally on some school's outdoor track for free, providing stiff competition for a paid summer track program. However, in the winter when its -30 with 2 feet of snow outdoor tracks seem less hospitable (except in snow shoes).

Track Update.
The club Board of Directors voted to pay the fee for the track upfront and to charge participants just $20 for the 6-8 week session. Thank them.
Now we are working on securing the Governor's Academy track for tuesday evenings beginning in Jan.
The 'official time; for us is 8:30-9:30, but we probably will be able to get in much earlier-at least to stretch and do a light warm-up as the session before is local H.S. teams who we know and support quite a bit.
The track is just short of 200meters, 3 pretty narrow lanes, and plenty of room in 'infield'.
This is a great opportunity to get together with other members and turn the legs over a bit while getting out of the cold and ice.

Thanks Adam, the gloves are mine. Must of dropped them about a dozen times, I was bound to lose them!

And thanks to everyone who volunteered, ran, or both at yesterday's Toy Trot race. I'm told it was the biggest turnout ever. A great day for a race, a little chilly but lots of smiling people (check out Ted Tyler's pictures). I'm grateful to all the club members who knew exactly what to do, even if I did not:

Carol (the woman knows all), Vicki (make that 2 women), Tom (you did everything), Mike F (thanks for not killing me), Derek and Mike M (for not killing anyone with Strouty Towers), Bob R (for knowing everyone), Maryann (POST Reg Queen), Paul (lug those boxes), Kate (got anymore t-shirts?) Timmy and Curt (got anymore beer?), Deb and Jimmy (chicken soup was good), Chip (1 mile man) Adam and Dave C (cold day for the water stop), Gary and John W (timing guru guys) Byron (hope you got your voice back), Dave L (you never seem to lose yours), Pam (reg and timing), Sharon and Dave (for my many stupid questions). I know I'm forgetting a bunch of people, but Santa was there and he knows that you were good. Thanks for everything!! Kristen

We are pulling together a training run for Sunday 1/20 to run the Great Bay Half course - with many people training for Boston planning to add on. The plan is to meet at the Newmarket High School Sunday morning and be ready to run at 8:00am. You will need to pack a fuel belt if you need one, this will not be a supported run, but there will be lots of good company for all pace levels.

I ran at Governor Dummer (being a local I refuse to call it anything else)this past Tuesday. What a great option to get some speed work in. A little hard on the body on the corners doing 200 repeats but generally speaking a great local place for a workout...and the forecast for this Tuesday is in the teens! Thanks to Mike M and Maureen Carroll for helping facilitate this. Hopefully we can make it an annual tradition.

Eddie, The Hood to Coast relay idea looks like it would only work if there were a few Circle members wanting to be part of a larger preexisting team w/ vacancies (since the relay is already "full"). I'll look at the Hood to Coast bulletin board and see what openings exist & see what's feasible right now.

Congrats to Chris Kealey for running a great time in the Master's Mile race at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games track meet this past weekend. Chris ran a 4:35.79 mile for 6th place, a 5 second improvement over his time at the GBTC meet at Harvard's indoor track a week earlier. Wished I had seen his Reebok performance! For race results go to: http://www.bostonindoorgames.com/2008/events/MastersMile.htm

For those that might be interested next year, you can participate in any of the non-invitational events at the GBTC meet and run in time seeded heats against high school, collegiate and wannabee track star runners. I recall the entry fee was only $15 per event.

I am sure that many of you who ran yesterday's Half at Hampton have already heard the tragic news about Bill Paradis, but here is part of the article from the Fosters this morning:

HAMPTON — Longtime, long-distance runner Bill Paradis died of an apparent heart attack on Sunday while running the half marathon, Half at the Hamptons.
Paradis collapsed at about mile 6 of the course and was taken to Exeter Hospital, but could not be revived, according to family and friends.
Paradis, 55, was a member of the Rochester Runners Club and was renowned for his encouragement, generosity and sense of humor.
He and his wife, Kathy, have worked for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for over 20 years.
Paradis' fellow runners from the Rochester Runners Club were shocked to hear the news of his death on Sunday afternoon.
On Sunday evening, club member Mary Ulinski said she had hoped that Paradis was not the man she saw lying on the ground at mile 6 of the half marathon. She said he was surrounded by EMTs, so she did not know it was Paradis until she finished the race.
Ulinksi said that a fellow runner asked her, "I wonder what that is all about?" as they passed Paradis, and she responded, "It doesn't look good."
When she reached the finish line, she was devastated to learn that the man was indeed her friend.
According to his fellow club members, Paradis had been running Sunday's race with his friend, Diane Levesque, and was complaining that he couldn't catch his breath. Not long after, Paradis collapsed on the course.
He joined the Rochester Runners club later in life, but once he started, he ran multiple marathons every year.
"He told me he was always training for a marathon," said a family friend and running partner, Janet Glazer, of Dover.
Paradis flew all over the country for various marathons, Glazer said.
"It was his goal to do a marathon in every state," she added.

Come join us for a training run on the Great Bay Half Marathon Course this Sunday March 9th. Meet at the Newmarket High School and be ready to run at 8:00am - REMEMBER TO SPRING YOUR CLOCKS FORWARD THIS WEEKEND!
Distances: 10 Miles, 13 Miles & some adding on. All Pace levels welcome. This is not a supported run, but there will be plenty of good company - our last training run had 45 runners all starting out together.

I am working with Mike putting together a group of official pace runners for the Great Bay Half Marathon on April 6th. Please let me know if you are interested in being an official pace runner (you will be provided a number/chip, race shirt, LOCO pacer hat & laminated pace time bib to pin on your back)- This is a great option for those Boston training that want the distance that day but may not want the pressure to run hard and fast. The new track is at the new EHS on Epping Road in Exeter - I coach middle school track there. It is very busy this time of year. Highschool is on it every afternoon from 2:30-4:30, middle school 3-4 times a week from 4:30-6:00, plus 2-3 days a week is special olympics. We also host a good deal of the 6th, 7th, 8th & Highschool meets, which generally run until 7:00-7:30pm. I run there several days a week and there is only about 3/4 miles actual XC trails, the rest of the XC course is run in the parking lot, around the ball fields and a small retention pond - it is not even certified XC distance. And you are right, after last years EEE threat, NOBODY was allowed in the trails and they are now a mess. Actually went in part way today and there is still a good deal of standing water (it is very wet even in the summer months)on about 50% of the trail. The track at PEA in Exeter (off Court Street) has loads of XC trails around it and they are kept very well maintained. Hope that helps :) Give me a call if you have questions. Lisa

Dale,
Just listen to your body...we're all different!! Myself? I've never been able to run a lick for a week after Boston...& even when I thought I was ready...the soreness came back after a few miles. You'll see others running the next day...and get this....some really crazy people have been seen running 5k races within the week. The way I see it...they didn't give their all at Boston...LOL.
Kudos to all of you...perhaps someday I'll attempt to run again...well, maybe...
Take care...

Dale, best to run and not 'train'. Take it easy for a month or so-at least-if you want to be fully recovered
Boston can cause much muscle damage and/or tightness that may take a long time to go away.

Anyone in the Amesbury/Salisbury/Newburyport area want to carpool to the Kennebunk 5 miler this Sunday (5/4-8:30 start time)? I guess it would also work out to meet up with folks along the way, going north on 95. Shoot me an e-mail at work if you are interested: michael.ruccio@noaa.gov.

As I mentioned at the meeting last night, I'm helping my wife raffle off 4 red sox tickets to help raise money for her participation in the Boston 3-day breast cancer awareness walk/Susan G. Komen for the cure event. You can learn more about the 3-day and Susan G. Komen foundation at: http://08.the3day.org/site/PageServer. Raffle tickets are $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00.

The game is September 2 vs. Baltimore, 7:05 start time. The seats are lower level grand stand on the 3rd base side, lined up with home plate. Good seats, unobstructed views.

We'll be selling raffle tickets right up until the July 31 drawing, so if you weren't at the meeting or didn't get a chance to get tickets last night, send me an e-mail at michael.ruccio@noaa.gov and we'll get things arranged via mail, upcoming races, the July WC meeting, or something.

Also, the Fukawi run was a blast! Thanks to those that helped set it up and ferried runners to the start. Also, thanks to those that smoothed things over with the Commonwealth’s finest that stopped by the Circle, too. Maybe next year, any route inside the I-95 or I-495 fences should be out of bounds?

More than likely just Saturday night August 2nd but possibly Friday too depending on how far away they are coming.

This allows us to pull some big guns for this event. MB Chesler is taking care of the boys from NYC but I got a commitment from a former NCAA D2 runner up for the 800. (Thank you to Linda Long for hooking me up with Steve Jones)

I need a vehicle to drive the Dufords and Lou Ristaino, for filming of the High Street Mile. Gary Calderwood who has done it for years had his jeep stolen over the last year and he is recovering from knee surgergy.

So ideally we need a jeep, mini-van, or pickup to accomodate the filming.

Looking for something a little different than your typical 5K? Here is your chance to enjoy a classic New England 5K at the “new” Exeter High School. Two miles of a flat to slightly downhill run around campus and country roads before entering a portion of the EHS XC course. Finally runners will enter the new state of the art track for a final 400m push to the finish. Overall & age division awards (3 deep) and a free raffle (think snow) for all race entrants. Application & online registration links on WCRC home page. Online Registration includes course map. Hope to see lots of Winners Circle colors on race day! Lisa

I met a few people from your group at the Dances With Dirt 50K in Hell, MI this past weekend. We ran together for a few miles and then separated. Classy group of runners. Anyways, I was hoping you might be able to supply me with their names? I was hoping to re-connect with them and exchange information. Subject: Manchester City Marathon - Volunteers Needed

Running Club Presidents,

I wrote to you at the beginning of July (see below) regarding volunteer opportunities for the Manchester City Marathon. I said that we had decided to issue a "Running Club Challenge" to see which running club could supply the most volunteers for the event. The board has decided that the club with the most volunteers will receive:

2 entries to next year's marathon/half marathon
2 MCM Wind Shirts
2 MCM Polo Shirts
2 MCM Runners Technical Shirts
Some clubs have talked about using these prizes in their Christmas raffles or as incentives for club members. (Don't forget the awesome Volunteer Shirts - "safety green" this year!!)

Would you please circulate this to your membership and see if you can be the winning club? Contest ends October 17th and I'll announce the winner shortly after that.

I have attached our Volunteer Form that needs to be submitted for each volunteer - preferably by EMail but there is also a US Postal Service mailing address at the bottom of the form.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Subject: Manchester City Marathon - Volunteers Needed

I am very excited to be the Volunteer Coordinator for the 2nd Manchester City Marathon - Half Marathon being held on Sunday Nov 2, 2008. I am sure that many of you either ran or attended last year's inaugural event. We have many volunteer opportunities during the weekend - mainly on race day. Some of the opportunities include traffic control, water stops, and various start/finish line opportunities involving setup and clean up as well as being there when the runners come across the finish line. We also have opportunities on Friday Oct 31 and Sat Nov 1 at Registration/Packet Pickup.

I am soliciting help from area running clubs as we need some good help along the course with traffic control. Who knows what runners need better than other runners? Our course is undergoing revisions and our goal is to make it safe and fun. We need to increase the number of volunteers along the course for traffic control and to provide good direction to the runners.

Would you please speak with the members of your organization and see if you could drum up some support? As a Board, we have decided to make it a bit interesting for the running clubs. We are proposing a contest to see which running club can provide the most support. The club with the most volunteers will be rewarded with a cool prize (well, OK, we don't know the actual prize yet but it will include at least 2 entries to the 2009 marathon along with additional cool stuff).

I have attached a Volunteer Form. Please feel free to distribute it to your members and anyone else that may be interested in this exciting event. The Volunteer Form has a place to indicate if you are a member of a running club.

I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks in advance for helping out!

I want to thank the members of the club for the gift certificate presented to me last night. My wife and I will enjoy it.
It was alot of fun helping first Ted and then Chris put on the High St Mile. Chris has brought the race to new heights and deserves an immense amount of credit. This was the first year in the last 6 or 7 that I actually was able to watch some of the race and really got to enjoy the show. The real credit goes to the club members who make putting on such an event a breeze. Everthing runs like clock work.
Having two( one local/ one national shoe co.) major cash sponsors this year was just fantastic. I believe the relationship we were able to develop with Puma will benefit the club and Don at NHS.
You never know how a contact that you make will turn out and this one goes back a ways and started with Bob Randall. Bob was the club rep that worked with shoe companies looking for wear testers. I fortunately was lucky enough to have size 9 feet( the sample size) and applied. Several shoe companies later I have been wear testing for Puma the last two/three years. I tried unsucessfully until this year to get Puma involved with being a major sponsor. Well people at Puma changed and we were able to talk them into a $2000.00 sponsorship. I hope that over time this will continue and I know they were very interested in helping Don Hennigar out.
I'll still be around to help but in a less formal way.
With Mike McCormick as the co-race director we will be in good hands.
Just don't let him give up the race announcer role as that is a big part of the race.

Thanks,
Mike Menesale

Hello Winners Circle - sorry for the soliciation, but it's for a good cause and I'm trying to reach out and see if any of you would be interested in volunteering with Team Atayne at the Maine Marathon in Portland, ME on Oct 5th. I'm a Newburyport native (Nbpt High Class 94') who is a partner in the launch of a new socially and environmentally responsible athletic apparel brand called Atayne (www.atayne.com). We literally launched our first line of performance running shirts a few weeks ago - made from 100% recycled materials (recycled polyester from water bottles) and blended with Cocona (recycled coconut shells providing a natural alternative to the chemicals used in traditional performance fabrics). Our company is dedicated to delivering high quality performance apparel that doesn't jeopardize the health of our planet, the workers producing it, or the athletes wearing it. Check us out!

Atayne is a sustainability partner for the Maine Marathon and as we did at the Zone Urban Epic Triathlon in Maine we'll be helping to make sure the event leaves minimal to no impact on the local community. To do this, we are putting together 'Team Atayne', a group of volunteers who will follow the final athletes through the course literally 'running for trash'. It's great for the community, fun for volunteers, and a wonderful opportunity to deliver a message to spectators and athletes through our actions. It would also be a great opportunity for your club to do some 'more' (I know you already do a lot) good by promoting responsible running/athletics.

So, what am I asking of you? We're looking to put together 15-20 volunteer 'Team Atayne Runners' to help manage the course. Though I'll be running / walking the entire distance to lead the effort, we're asking volunteers to commit to helping run / walk a portion of the race with us (maybe 5 miles - could be more if you would like). We'll all be wearing the new Atayne running shirts (you'll get a FREE Atayne performance top for your help - $38 value) and cleaning up the course. At the end, my partner and I along with some volunteers will make sure all the trash we collected is separated into what can be recycled and what cannot (again, minimizing the event environmental footprint).

If you are interested and can 'commit' to helping us out, let me know. Also, if any of your friends or others want to help out, let me know. If you have any ideas, we love them too. Final details will be communicated once we get confirmation on numbers. The race begins on Oct 5th in Portland at 7:45am. We have 7 committed including myself already.

Looking forward to hearing back from you. I really hope I didn't upset anyone with this post - I thought this the best possible way to communicate to you all.

Interesting look @ Haile Gebrselassie world record marathon run by 5k splits. Bear in mind that a 5 min/mile pace 5k is 15:30! Only 15 Americans have beat Haile G's 1/2 marathon time, and he did another 13!

His pace was 4:44. The ultimate question; is a sub 2 hour marathon humanly possible. Will we see it in our lifetime? That is a 4:34 pace.

I have always considered the club sponsored " coached running enhancement program" otherwise known as spring and fall workouts to be one of the club's best offered programs. Just look at some of the recent accomplishments of the current participants:
Good PRs last few weeks from group members:

Dave Carroll in marathon: (also 10 mile and ½ marathon en route).

Mike Ruccio in marathon.

Tanya Kehoe-5k

Jen Groskin- 5k

Myles Wilson-3mile -bustin the 7min. per barrier!

When the club competes in " all hands events" like Mill Cities and as close as the results have been in past years results like these not only benefit the individuals but the club as a whole.
I would like to see this program continue and the club support and encourage participation as vigorously as possible in the future.

Congratulations to all the participants in this fall's workouts as it has been a pleasure to run with all of you.

Thanks to coach, Mike McCormick, for putting the workouts together and keeping us all motivated for the past 8 weeks.

Would anyone be interested in hosting 3 runners from Kenya this weekend?

They are running the Manchester Marathon. Ideally if anyone is running the marathon they would need a ride to race as I think they are taking a bus up here.

These guys are from the Westchester Running Club. I know one of the guys, Joseph Ekoum (he was 3rd @ the YHC 10M this year). Very nice guy. We had him over after the 10 mile.

Two questions:

Where can I get a map of the Turkey Trot course? I ran an off road race yesterday (Bemis-Forslund Pie Race at Mount Hermon, MA) for the first time and it was trying, to say the least.

Can Circle Talk be searched so I don't have to keep asking questions?

The WCRC's main duty for the Mill Cities Relay is to marshall the point on the long-4th leg- where runners come up from bike path back on to 110.
Looking for a person or persons who is willing to do this duty. It is pretty low maintenance, but you will be there for a few hours.(this duty will change in the event of snow covered path whereby the bike path won't be used and runners will stay on 110 and our duty will move up to Bridge St-a 1/2 mile up the course).
Please let me know if you can do this for us and the race. Race is sunday Dec. 7.

Congratulations to the Newburyport High School Soccer team, Massachusetts State Champions 2 years in row! Hannah McCormick scored the winning school in the North Sectionals (I think that was the game) in the last minute to allow the Clippers to advance to the finals.

Also congrats to Don Hennigar's Newburyport boys XC for a 6th finish at the States.

I wanted to first of all state how appreciative I am to be a member of the Winner's Circle Running Club. It has been a privilege to wear the colors and a welcomed sight to see others in the same at some of the local races. Due to injury, I am unable to participate in the Mill City Relays, but at least will be able to volunteer at the Toys to Tots race later this month.

After treatment from my chiropractor and realizing this is the season for giving, I came up with what I think is a great gift for the season to my fellow WCRC members. Dr. Paul Loch, my chiropractor, has agreed to offer a free exam and first adjustment to any Winners Circle Running Club members during this month of December (as long as they present their Membership card or jersey at time of visit).

I don't know how to pass this gift on to the other members of the club but figured posting it here would get the word out. Either members can contact me for Dr. Loch's information at 603-659-2341 or can contact him directly at 603-772-7888. He is out of Exeter, NH.

Hey kids!!
It was nice to see such a great turnout for Mill Cities. I haven't seen many of you for a long time. We may have come-up short, but we gave it a valiant effort. I'd like to thank Derek Dorval & Laurie Gaudreau for their relentless efforts in forming & reforming the teams for this year's relay.
For those of you who haven't been involved in the task of creating & maintaining the teams...let me tell you it can be rather stressful. The next time you see these people...please give them a high-five or even a hug...they deserve our praise. Ok, enough said on that!!
Hope to see you at Santa's Toy Trot, Xmas party, Hangover, and whatever function includes a few "brewskis" along the way...until then continue to wear the Circle Colors with pride. We'll get'um next year!!

Yes, thanks to all that helped at Toys for Tots. This group is more reliable than the post office (no offense Bob). Not ice storms, or power outages, or lack of showering will keep this group from turning out in force to help out and/or run. Numbers were down a bit, but to be expected during a weather state of emergency. The Toys for Tots people received a good amount of toys so we should all be happy for that.

A huge thank you to Jimmy (last minute equipment lugging with van), Kate, Curt, Adam, Tom M, Vicki, Paul, (the lugg-ers). Bob, Mary Ann, Mike F, Carol, Dave L, Maureen, John W, Linda, Becky, Matt, Pam, Gil. Even Timmy working a 23 hour shift made an appearance!

Thanks to all! Kristen

Hi All.....I am new to the club, and running.I have run some short races but have been training for the Hampton Half.
I have 2 questions
1) I run 3 days a week, pace run 3-4miles(9-10min miles),intervals 1/4 mile walk,1/4 jog,1/4 quick run & long run (up to 10-11 miles 10-11:30 pace)Is this suitable training schedule?

2)with ice storms, snow etc how do you guys get your runs in...tredmill?
for some reason I have a tough time running on a tredmill.

Thanks

Bob.
for most runners-especially new- mileage is key when training for any distance race, particularly something like a 1/2
To a point(health, time, leg strength, gait etc), more miles the better. 3 days per week running is only going to get you so far. If possible, incrementally increase miles, days running over time.
If you want to really get to the point where you can 'Race' the 1/2(ie go real hard the whole way) most need a minimum of 40miles per week.

Treadmill running as well,is kind of a personal thing. If you don't enjoy it don't do it. Always thought a big allure of running is getting outside all year. Being outside in tought weather toughens you. And race day may see some problems. Running on the coast in the winter you are going to get some wind.
However if you're going to slide and pull a muscle as some do on ice, then treadmills are a good alternative. They are excellent for hill workouts as you don't have to go down and jar your tired legs.

The club is sponsoring indoor track workouts-Tuesday evenings starting Jan.20 7p.m.-Governor's Academy in Newbury, Mass. if interested.

Toy Trot

This year, I got my entire family to go to the race and everyone had a great time. From the time I got there, everyone was so nice and encouraging to both me and the kids. From Mike F. looking for the baby (who is now 2), to Santa giving candy canes, to Tom M. searching me out to see if my kids were running the elf run because he didn't want them to miss it, to all the smiles that were flashed our way. All the volunteers were wonderful. My daughter Macy is still talking about being cheered on to 'Beat your Dad' at the end of the race. <<Just to set the record straight, she did beat me, but I had did a long run earlier, was pushing the carriage, had a sore left little toe and ....>>

Not only is it a great race, but it for a great cause. Congratulation to Kirsten for a great race and to all the volunteers. This is an event to be very proud of.

Bob G - Winter Running

Bob,

Another great way to get in some quality training in the snowy weather is to snow shoe run. They sell special snow shoes that are smaller and designed for running. Several things that I enjoy about SS running:

1) Anyone can do it - just strap them on and run.
2) It's much more fun to run through several inches of snow than it is to run on the treadmill
3) It's a tough workout. You have 2 lbs on each foot, plus you're breaking a trail. When SSing, you will be much slower than on the road, but you heart rate is close to workout levels
4) The snow is soft, so very little impact on the legs.

The last 3 winters I have been doing as much SSing as I can and I find that it improves my overall fitness a lot.

I have a pair of Atlas. Here is a link for them. I have the running pair, a little heavier than the racing pair, but much more sturdy. The racing ones are light, but tend to bend. I think the Atlas shoes will run around $160 and you can get them at Rei, Kittery Trading Post or on-line.

Heart Rate Monitors

Was thinking about getting a HRM for training, mostly for indoor stuff as I am doing about 40% of my training this winter on one of those spinning type bikes to save my knees from road wear.

Any suggestions? Was looking @ the Timex ones, around $60. I am amazed how much the price of these things has dropped.

During the Frigid Fiver on Sunday, there was a very interesting finish that: 1) allowed people at the finish to make fun of Ryan Spinney and me and 2) raised the question: I thought there were three in the lead pack.

For the first 4 miles of the race, there were 3, yes 3 of us, in the lead pack. At mile 4, it went to 2 as I could not hang with Ryan and the other runner. As I was now 40 feet behind, I watched as we approached the turn into the school to see who was going to take the victory. Ryan got in front and made the turn and started to kick, but the other guy just kept going straight. Turns out he wasn't even in the race! So now, the guys at the line start to make fun of Ryan about being pushed by a guy 'out of a sunday run...' and then of course we started to wonder who he was.

Well, they were right at the finish line, he was just out for a Sunday run. It turns out that the runner was Dan Franek (43 years old) from South Portland. He is the NE cross country champion for last year, a 4:30 miler (2nd master at Reebok last year) and mid 15 for 5K. So as I struggled to maintain a 5:45 pace, he 'was out for a Sunday jog'!

Race Directors: Potential Brewery Sponsor for races!

I met the three owner/operators of the Haverhill Brewery last night at a small tasting event in Amesbury. They are a pretty small brewery looking to get bigger and increase their exposure. They were very personable and I floated the idea of getting involved with local races as a sponsor and perhaps post run libation provider. They seemed really into it(particularly because places like Mercury Brewing, Smuttynose, and Red Hook are avid race sponsors).

If you have a race coming up in the north shore/ southern NH area and want to try to hook up with them they can be reached at 978 373 2337, 978 476 1180 or tapbrewer@gmail.com Feel free to contact them directly and drop the club's name or I'm happy to contact them for you if there is interest.

Paula comes from a running family and had deep ties to the running world and the WCRC. She was an extraordinary runner taking part in many club team races at Mt. Washington, Boston and the relays. Has the mailing we put together on the 12th gone out yet ? I never received the mailing.

Caution for blood donors: I have been a blood donor on a regular basis for most of my life. I have always donated a pint of whole blood and never had any after affects from giving blood. Back on 3/12/09 I donated blood via their new procedure called "double red". They take just the red blood cells but double the normal amount. It has really affected my running as I have been getting fatigued very easily and after just a short distance( 1-1.5 miles). I am not discouraging anyone from donating blood but just be aware as I confirmed with the Red Cross today that the "double red" donating procedure is what is causing the fatique.

I had about 200 or so fliers that needed extra postage. I finally got around to sending them out on Monday.

Sounds like you went through the opposite of blood doping. Did they suggest iron supplements & temporarily increasing red meat consumption?

The race app mailing list is not a member list. It is from pre-reg entries to the 2008 hangover, 2007 turkey trot, 2008 bobby bell, (... ????) made up by Manning last November. I don't believe mike is on the list. We count on email to hit the members.

Hi all,

I am a photographer from the Amesbury News.
We are doing a profile video piece on someone from Amesbury who is running the marathon. In the piece we are asking why are you running and will document your ritual of running. The video piece will be about 1 to 2 minutes long. So ...if you have a story to tell, or just happen to be from the town and are running please contact Nicole Goodhue Boyd @

Hey kids!! I heard through the grape-vine that a decision was made as to who will receive the club numbers for the mountain, but have yet to receive any official notification... what needs to be done to complete the registration process at this point? In the old days a separate application was needed...I'd have a few beers w/Tom Manning & it was a done deal...now I'm a Mainer & don't get to the Circle as much...guessing an additional online registration is possible...do they simply use the information already on file from the lottery? Anyone? Derek?

Hello,
I have a bit of a problem. I've entered and paid for two relay teams in the Burlington VT Marathon. One team is our usual family and friends (FOG). The other was entered for the Triton Cross Country kids. Unfortunetly Triton discovered they had "CALs" meets that week end. This leaves me with one full team and one going to be 9th grade kid that was running with Triton. We need a minimum of two more runners for three person relay or a Max of 4 runners for a 5 person marathon relay. I'm not charging for the entry fee I just want the kid to run and see the relay slot used. It's an open relay slot any age or sex but I need names, addresses and DOB in by the end of this month. You know anyone? SUNDAY BURLINGTON VT MAY 24, 2009 starting time 8 AM. If you know a couple to 4 runners interested email me their info and I'll send it right in. Otherwise I have to drop the slot. Thanks for any help.

Great to see the Road Kill column back in the Rag. Thanks, Mike! I always thought it embodied the spirit of the club. Also, my trip east has me back in my shorts, doing short runs on trails. did a 4 miler -- my longest in years, last week, and I'm starting to enjoy it again. Any of you oldies interested in Hood to Coast in August 2010? (too late for this years race) It would be a blast to run with the gang out here in Oregon.

It seems that we could use some more Competitive Women Runners, size 7. Also, we have gotten a few Women's Track & Field (basic) Spikes, also in Women's 7.

So if you know of any size 7 dedicated Runners, have them contact us.

(From New Balance)
Hello Winner's Circle Running Club!

The New Balance Sports Research Lab is in need of runners to participate in
running related research and testing. I was wondering if we could get into
your newsletter and/or onto the home page of your web site. Your members
would have the opportunity to come in to our state of the art Sports
Research Lab in Lawrence and utilize some of the most technical equipment
in the world. We would get study and testing participants to help us
develop the best products on the market and your members would, aside from
a very cool experience, get gear such as tshirts and shoes, etc. If this
is a possibility, I have added some text below that outlines what we are
looking for. Thank you very much for your time.

_______________________

The recently completed New Balance Sports Research Lab in Lawrence, MA is
looking for runners! Check out a short segment done on our lab by WBZTV (
http://wbztv.com/bostonmarathon/boston. ... 84934.html). We are constantly
doing research and product testing related to running, but in order to do
this research and testing we need athletes! A typical trip would involve
about an hour in our Sports Research Lab with our trained experts using our
state of the art equipment. As compensation, we will let you keep a pair of
awesome New Balance running shoes. We are especially interested in men who
are size 9.5 because this is the size we create prototype shoes in. We are
also very interested in women who are a size 7. If you are not that size,
don't worry because we often do other studies and testing where we are
looking for other sizes. If you would like to help us out, see a research
lab unlike any other, and get a new pair of the finest running shoes around
, email us!

Just send us a quick email with your name and contact information to
sportsresearch@newbalance.com. Also include your age, shoe size and
activity level! That's it! We look forward to hearing from you!

Thanks.

I wanted to use this forum to alert people to a position open in the Pentucket Regional School District for an accountant. The economy is so bad right and I thought that someone may know someone who is out of work. The position requires a BS in accounting. Please send a resume and three letters of recommendation to kmcwilliams@prsd.org or via mail to PRSD 22 Main Street West Newbury MA 01985.

Breaking news...from a friend & fellow runner:

I got a note from Tina Kimball. She and Mark were out running last night and Mark got hit by a truck. He's going to be okay--bruised lungs but no broken bones. They were on East road when a car hit a truck and then the truck spun and hit Mark. He's in Lawrence General now and was in critical condition for a while. Ugh. You never think that kind of thing is going to happen. Be careful out there.

FYI- I called the hospital, but Mark is still in ICU. This means family only...will post again if I find-out anything.

For those who don't know Mark Kimball...I'm proud to say...he was a High School teammate of mine & Collegiate All American at BU. Back in the day he and his older brother, Dean would duke it out with Buddy Bostick for Victory at the Yankee Homecoming 10-miler. You know..."the day"- back when non-Kenyan athletes would run 49-minutes for 10? Mark & Dean also introduced me to Buddy & together we enjoyed my 1st-ever post-race party at the Winner's Circle...I'll never forget it...been a regular at the Circle ever since. Just thought I'd share...:)

Matt Ely ( a regular Circle Race runner/winner) ran 49:58 @ the Broad Street 10M last month in Philadelphia. Don't think he has Kenyan roots ;>)

Running on the road continues to be a dangerous endeavor. Cell phones cause more accidents than ever. I do not even bother running on roads anymore unless I have to. I was down in Philly 2 weeks ago on a run when this dude slammed into tree about 100 feet from me. I was the first one on the scene not sure if he made it or not.

I remember the Kimballs when I was a kid in the 'Port, flying up the High School drive to the finish. Hope he comes out of it OK.

Medical Update on Mark from a friend:

What I forgot to post was that I found out Mark was unconscious for a time...has a severe concussion & recently had surgery on his broken wrist...earlier report said no broken bones...this in addition to his bruised internal organs (lungs) & multiple externals.

More on Mark's recovery (present status) from my bro:
Mark is out of the ICU, but according to Tina, is not yet ready to receive visitors, because he tires easily and she's concerned that the extra demands could delay recovery. I guess he continues to display signs of confusion with increased fatigue, but compared to not even being conscious a few days ago, I reminded her that he's come a long way! :) I forgot to ask for an address. Tina says it does cheer him to know that people are pulling for him. so please continue to send think good thoughts! He should now be listed in the hospital's patient directory, so you could get his room # etc from them.

High Street Mile volunteers/housing - Sunday August 2nd

With all the bad weather it feels like the HSM has crept up on us. Just about 2 weeks to race day. HSM requires a lot of volunteers to be successful. Almost 80% of runners register that day so there is a lot of registration activities. Additionally we need all sort of traffic/timing logistics for this 4 heat race. We may also need last minute housing for some elite athletes.

If you can help please let me know. Chris.Kealey@thermofisher.com 978.270.6854

Thanks

Anyone running the Baystate Marathon this October who has not registered yet should do it soon.

It sold out last year, and certainly will again this year despite an increase to 2,000 runners. As of 7/9, which was the last update, the website lists 1471 registered runners. And I know for a fact that it now stands at at least 1472!

A huge thank you to Mike Fiene for timing yesterday's Stratham Fair Road Race and to the volunteers that helped out at registration, water stops, relay exchange zone and finish line and to all the WCRC runners.

NEWSFLASH! CAA takes the "friendly" team challenge between CAA & WCRC runners with a score of 51 to 34! Scoring is based on age group division winners 5 deep and CAA arrived with a stacked team in all age groups.

This year’s "cooler" than average temperatures put some fast times on the clock, with Lawton Redman winning the men’s race in a time of 28:51 (Mark Kimball holds the course record of 26:42)and Stephanie Crawford winning the women’s race in 35:04. The men’s winner had Bob Wiles, Casey Carroll, Todd Hanson & Alan Bernier all wondering "who is that guy" as he passed and pulled away from them at the 1 mile mark. For those who were wondering the same, Redman is a former All-American in cross country at St. Lawrence, is currently a Black Hawk helicopter pilot for the National Guard and just happened to be in the area visiting an alumni friend from St. Lawrence.

WCRC runners placing and scoring in the team challenge: Tim Roache, Brian McWilliams, Ken Houle, Steve Reed, Jeff Goddard, Liz Mooney-Arcieri, Meagan Roache, Jerry Rosa, Sin Kounlasa, Lisa Pappas, Abby Jackson, Joe Hayes (after running the VT 100 miler last weekend) and Robert Randall

Anyone interested in helping w/the Yankee Homecoming Childrens races can meet me at the Fuller Track on Friday July 31 any time between 3-4. It will take an hour and is well attended by children b/t the ages of 3-12. I know it sounds like the "diaper derby" to most of you but the children appreciate it as evidenced by the smiles when we did this last year. I am going to take the tables from the Circle and clean out a few other things like old number, pins and any old ribbions to give out, and the speaker. I will have everything back by the p.m. to ensure that The High Street Mile is not impacted.
Thanks, john

Thought I would share this note I received from someone who ran the High Street Mile:

"I ran with my 4 year old and he did so well. It was a magical moment for me as a parent. Thank you for doing race.

You can count us in for many, many years to come."

While it is very exciting to see the elites sprint down High Street this is really what putting on races is all about.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen. This is smoothest HSM I have seen as a race director. There were over 30 WCRC'ers helping out and everyone played an integral role.

Let me know if you have any suggestions for improvements for next year.

Chris, Good videos. The winner of the men's heat could have broken the record this year for sure...but he drifted way over onto the westbound side of High St around the 3/4 pt. Kudos to whoever was in the video truck hollering out to him to to move to his right. It looks as though the fastest way to run the last quarter is stay near the middle & then taper in on the tangent. Maybe enough of a difference to shave 2 seconds?
Chris Kealey  446
08-11-2009 02:02 PM ET (US)
Myles, Actually he did exactly the right thing there, hitting the tangent. I have the USATF map on my web site (click on the USATF link on left) and you will see that Steve Vaitones measured the course as an open road course and right @ the 3/4 mile you need to hit that tangent. Abraham's best mile was a 4:01 on the track(while racing in college) so I think he ran an accurate road mile @ 4:04. The # 2 guy was an Olympic Trials qualifier in 3K Steeple (also 4:01 on the track) and was almost 5 seconds back and did not hit the tangent. See you tonight @ the track. Chris

Interesting statistic about Usain Bolt's world record 100 meter run last night. Between 60m and 80m, he topped out at 28.58mph. Also, in April of this year on a rain-soaked day in Manchester UK he clocked 8.72sec for the last rolling 100m on a 150m straight. We will never see someone like this again in our lifetime. The 200 meter finals is on Versus TV (formally the Outdoor Network) on Thursday night.

More into on the Atkinson 5K:
The 32nd Annual Atkinson 5K Road Race will be run Thursday, September 3, 2009. 6:00PM start at Pope Field, Atkinson, NH. Mark Kimball, a long time area runner, and WCRC member, was stuck by a car while running in early June. This year the Atkinson Road Race will serve as a fundraiser for Mark Kimball and his family. The race will continue, as it has in the past, to provide donations to the Timberlane Cross Country & Field Hockey booster organizations, but all additional money raised will go directly to the Kimball Family. For additional information contact at sandy-cannon@comcast.net. Timed by WCRC.

On September 13th Stella McCormick ( stellamccormick@comcast.net ) and some of Paula Holm's friends and co workers are running/walking the NOCC ovarian cancer race. Paula and Stella ran this race together since she was diagnosed 6 years ago and this year a group is running in Paula's memory. Paula had many friends in WCRC that may be interested in running for this great cause. They are registered as a team under 'Paula's Pals' and anyone can sign up online and join the team. Stella is also having 'Paula's Pals' tshirts printed up that the team will wear on the day, they will probably cost around $10. This is a great event and all the money goes to raising awareness and promoting research for Ovarian Cancer. The website to enter the race or get more information is http://nocc.kintera.org/MA.

RAGNAR RELAY RUNNER NEEDED!

A coworker of mine needs a runner for the Ragnar Relay (CT to Boston) coming up September 11th and 12th. I can't do it 'cause I'm still broken. They are trying to find a runner to run the following legs: 7.6 miles, 7.5 miles, 5.3 miles, 20.4 miles total. They were hoping to find someone who runs at least 7:10 pace in a 10k. There would be some cost involved to cover van rental and maybe substitute runner fees ($50-70). I know a lot of the runners on the relay team from work and they are good people and a good mix of casual runners and at least one that qualified for Boston in 2010. Contact Michelle Wagner at mwimages@hotmail.com for more info or if you are interested in joining her team.

Very impressive showing by Don Hennigar's boys team against North Andover yesterday. 7 out of top 9 runners were NBPT. Top 9 all under 17:00. According to Don the winning time by NA's Varney (15:34) was 3rd fastest ever in the 23 history of the course. Only slower than Darrin Shearer (15:12) and Travis Landreth (15:16). Big meet next week against Hamilton Wenham.

The Mill Cities Relay will be run on Sunday December 6, 2009. This is the Running Club Championship of the Merrimac Valley: a relay team race open to invited "mill cities" clubs only (including WCRC). For more information contact Derek Dorval (ddorval@northreading.mec.edu) or Laurie Gaudreau (lgaudreau@yorkhospital.com). The Mill Cities Relay is an “all hands on deck” event for the club. All WCRC club members are encouraged to participate. There is NO LIMIT to the number of WCRC relay teams. There is NO COST for WCRC members who participate (the club pays all race fees). EVERYONE has a good time! Check out the past results (http://www.millcities.com/mcr_points.htm), you’ll see that WCRC has been a “player” at Mill Cities for many years.

The five relay legs are 5.6, 4.75, 2.5, 9.5, and 4.75 miles. You can check out the course map at http://www.usatf.org/routes/view.asp?rID=65668 or at the Mill Cities website linked above. All of the legs are relatively fast. There are some minor ups and downs, but there are no “4000 footers” between Nashua and Lawrence. There are men’s, women’s, and mixed teams in 16+, 40+, 50+ and 60+ age divisions. The relay starts at 8:00 AM. The racing is wrapped up by noon, but there is a great multi-club post-race runners party at the Claddagh Pub at the finish line in Lawrence that makes it worth staying into the afternoon if you can.

If you would like to participate on a WCRC team at mill cities, send the following information to Derek and/or Laurie. DON’T BE SHY, VOLUNTEER TO RUN FOR THE CLUB. IF YOU SUBMIT YOUR NAME YOU WILL BE PUT ON A TEAM – NO ONE GETS LEFT OUT.

Name:
Age:
Gender:
Email address:
Telephone number:
Typical pace (or time) in a 5k or 10k:
Time-of-day/leg restrictions or desires:

Please try to be flexible in considering the relay legs. The best thing is to reserve the entire morning and say “I’ll run any leg on any team!”. Keep in mind that Derek and Laurie are going to be organizing 18 or 20 WCRC teams across 12 age/gender divisions. The more restrictive you are, the less sleep they’ll get!
