SCHOOL BUS PROPOSITION REVOTE
Be sure to VOTE TUESDAY November 24. 2009 8am–9pm
Taxpayers should VOTE NO because -

1) The E.I. Teachers Assoc. and the present School Board majority is forcing us to go back to the polls to vote again when we already said NO to the same proposition in May.

2) The cost - an estimated $200,000. (plus the $16,000. for another vote) will be with us forever and with this recession’s job losses and devalued home prices it is the wrong time to add to our “already too high” school property tax bills. They need to find ways to reduce taxes – not increase them.

3) This proposal will not solve the problems of congestion and student safety as they claim.

Yes, there is a problem with congestion particularly at the middle school and high school. Unfortunately both entrances are opposite one another on the same road but that is another issue. The safety concern is primarily due to too many private cars dropping off students at school at the same time that the buses are arriving. Many of these children are eligible to ride the bus but are driven to school. This is why many buses arrive half empty – a waste of our tax dollars as we must pay for the bus whether full or half empty.

There will be a vote to increase your taxes on November 24th. It concerns adding more buses and reducing the long-standing limits on mileage to qualify for a bus pass. East Islip is already below State mileage requirements. For years it was standard practice to grant temporary bus passes to students as the need arose. All temporary bus passes were revoked just before school started in September. WHY? Could it be that the “Concerned Parents” group funded by the teachers union spearheaded this petition drive to force a re-vote ?

It signals a new union/board strategy of scheduling costly “proposition only” re-votes outside of the normal yearly budget vote. It has more to do with two pro taxpayer candidates gaining seats on the board and the present majority’s desire to obstruct them at every turn. Please note that pro union Board member Ken Cronin, who favored bringing back this proposition also voted to rush through the administrators contract giving them raises of up to $22,000 just before the new board members were sworn in. Remember this if Mr. Cronin runs for re-election in May.

Absentee ballots: Since the re-vote was scheduled just before Thanksgiving, if you plan to be away or cannot get to the polls for any other reason please request an absentee ballot. Call Marie Rogers the District Clerk at 581-1600 – The easiest way to go through this process is to go up to the District Office request an application and a ballot and cast your vote at that time. Ballots are available now. Call Mrs. Rogers first to make sure she is available.

Please be aware this is a permanent change to district policy and will be an additional yearly cost to the taxpayer forever. We oppose adding any new tax on to the backs of already taxed-out residents or our local storekeepers and businesses.

VOTE NO!

Polling the buses won't matter. There is a legal obligation to supply a seat to every eligible student whether they chose to sit in the seat(ever) or not. There is some logic to this; If they need to get all the eligible bus kids home due to some emergency there must be the seats available. Eligibility is based upon the current distance policy in place for many years.

The past practice has been the unreserved seats where given out on temporary passes. This all come to be an issue because one bus was dropped due to enrollment - I believe the route was over by St. Mary's. Those parents wanted temporary passes and none were available (or not enough for all the requests). They made a case to the district that can be summed up as: "If we can't have temporary passes why should others get them". This of course become the EISD current policy - "we can't pick and choose" - fair is fair right?. So here we go - we will have another vote (at a cost to he taxpayers = approx $16K). - to change the distance guidelines and add three buses at cost of about $170k per year , every year, of course this is not including cost increase, gas, insurance, etc. This is a case of some members of the community not considering the impact their case may have on the other members of community - maybe they didn't know , maybe they didn't care, doesn't matter - the result is the same.

Here are a few facts:

The NYS limit a child in a HS can walk is 3 miles. We currently have 1 1/2.

The current policy has been in place since the '70's.

How many of the current parents bought their house's ( hopefully informed about the bus policies in place) after the 70's - under the current rules? Most current parents did not own a home in the community 30 years ago - I would even venture to say < 97% did not.

The point is that we chose the house we bought and if due diligence was done - we knew where the schools were - we still chose our properties based upon where in town we wanted to live, regardless of our "bus eligibility".

Bottom line - our costs are always going up - we accelerate the rate of increase by demanding more from the District.

Opinion:

SO both parents have to work to pay the taxes that fund the schools -

SO no one can be home to walk with their kids if they feel they are not safe walking to school - Grandma cant' do it, she had to move of NY because she couldn't afford the taxes-

SO maybe they drive their kids to school which increases costs to the family: gas, time from work-

SO some employ morning sitters or go to work late -

SO maybe they have to use the afterschool program which costs $-

It is a perpetual circle that keeps growing in scale.

SO - How much harder or longer do you want to work to support an issue that personally effects you for a few years (4th-12th grade maximum for many families much less) but financially effects you for as long as you live in this community.

Its up to District residents to make a personal decision and vote in November for community impact.

"Gov. David A. Paterson, speaking in Great Neck Sunday morning, repeated his call for state legislators to pass midyear budget cuts to health care and school aid, saying failure to do so would be "penny-wise and pound-foolish.""

But our school district wants to INCREASE TAXES by expanding transportation because a mere 2% of the population signed a petition. Way to go East Islip!

You should vote on Tuesday against the Transportation Proposition because this is just another reason to increase your taxes....another line item to increase when they do not have to. The district had an additional 3,000,000 from last year to increase the reserves...when will enough be enough. The reserves are now 10,000,000.

And just like I thought.....

You are still obsessed with one man, blinded by your own stupidity to realize that there are many, many people in this community who are sick of the "concerned parent's" bullshit.

You are the loser, the freaking retard who lies, cheats and manipulates. In your blind devotion to the school district, you refuse to see the abuse and dirty dealings going on right under your nose. You will sacrifice your neighbor, the community's children, and the elderly in order to satisfy your own agenda.

You are not wanted here. Go back to posting your bullshit over on the schwartz.
