KUDOS to Rich!! The site was sorely out of date due to a severe family emergency which forced the 'retirement' of our previous webmaster. Rich jumped in and had to learn how to do a website basicly from scratch. I think he's done a fine job!!

To Whom It May Concern: At its regularly scheduled meeting on September 17, 2006, The Kansas Vietnam Veterans & Family Reunion (KVVFR) voted unanimously to voice its complete and total opposition to the design, erection, construction, and or placement of the proposed Vietnamese Soldiers Memorial within the confines of the City park location commonly known as Veterans Park near 2nd and Greenway streets, Wichita, KS. The Reunion members feel that the placement of this memorial on grounds previously consecrated by the City Council, and Park Board, and dedicated to the memory of the defenders of our nation, would set not only a serious precedent for future memorials within the park. It would also, create a serious division within our city between the Vietnamese and the Veteran communities. The Reunion members would point out that the Veteran population of Wichita alone, is approximately 29,600 (Source: US Census Bureau 2005) or 11.4% of the city population over age 18 (Voting age), (not including spouses or other family members), while the total Vietnamese population is given as 6,859 (2.1% of total population of City of Wichita. Source: City of Wichita Demographics data). Vietnam-born veterans (ARVN) show 0.0% population by either source. We know there are Vietnam-born military veterans living in Wichita, and we do agree they should have a place to honor their war dead, it is our contention that any such monument, if erected, should be located in an appropriate location more convenient to the Vietnamese community. The City of Wichita has announced plans to construct an International Corridor along 21st Street, which is scheduled to include a Vietnamese Cultural Center somewhere within that project. It is the contention and desire of The Kansas Vietnam Veterans & Family Reunion that the Vietnamese Soldiers Memorial would be better appreciated, maintained, and visited were it to be possibly used as a focus point for the Vietnamese Cultural Center, and included in the Centers landscaping plans before they are too far along. Several years ago the Vietnamese community here in Wichita made application for a memorial to be built in Veterans Memorial Park. It was denied by the Wichita Park Board for the following reasons:
1. This park was built by U S Veterans for US Veterans 2. The Vietnamese who served in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam were not U S Veterans 3. Veterans Memorial Park is for U S Veterans of all Wars and Conflicts, not just Viet Nam.
As a result of the findings of the Park Board, the applicants were advised to go anywhere else but not to Veterans Memorial Park. The Park Board, during this time even drove the Vietnamese contingent around the City on a tax payer funded junket to find another location for said memorial. The Vietnamese refused all other offered locations. Various U.S. Veterans groups have also been told, when applications were made, that there is no more room in the Park for Grenada, Panama, Bosnia, Desert Storm, and other more recent conflicts for there memorials. Remembering the information given to veterans groups in the past by the Park Board, that they need never harbor any illusions that additional veterans monuments would ever be permitted within the Veterans Memorial Park, The Kansas Vietnam Veterans & Family Reunion can only wonder how there is now suddenly room for this memorial Mr. Doug Kupper, The Park Board Director, reasoned in 2003 that there were already too many stones there, and that any more would spoil the aesthetic beauty of the three and one half acre site. His recommendation was that if anyone wanted another stone, they would have to find another place for it. The Kansas Vietnam Veterans & Family Reunion proudly joins The Marine Corps League, Operation Ensign, and Veterans Memorial Park of Wichita, Inc. in opposing this project.
