Kevin's Weekly Collecting Tips & FAQ

Q: How does one identify a forger? (Continued from last week)

In the end, collectors should consider the following:

1) Research the sources from whom you buyand don't be afraid to ask around to determine who is reputable. A reputable dealer, moreover, should be willing to provide you with references and/or a hobby resume when asked for his professional credentials;
2) When in doubt, stay away! You get what you pay for and its better to pay a little more to get an authentic example than to gamble on something for less that may be brought into question at some later time;
3) Limit the circle of sources from whom you buy. There's plenty of authentic material available from reputable sources. Keep the circles of those dependable sellers from whom you buy small to prevent the opportunity for seepage of 'bad' or questionable material into your collection;
4) Reputable sellers ARE an insurance policy of your purchases-no one of great experience selling autographs is perfect. That is, I know of no one with a perfect record determining real autographs from those that are fake 100% of the time. But reputable sellers remain in business over time primarily because of two reasons: One, they almost never make mistakes; and two, if and when items they have sold come into legitimate question, they will honor the item with a refund or exchange. Thus, when you buy from reputable sellers you are also getting an informal insurance policy with your purchase.

We welcome your comments or questions as well to post in future newsletters.

Thank you for choosing Quality Autographs as one of your premier sources for building your sports autograph collection and we look forward to hearing from you soon!
Sincerely,

Kevin Keating

2. 1949 Leaf "Prototype" Card Found

"Prototype" Card
"Prototype" Card (Back)

Production Card
Production Card (Back)

For nearly six decades, the 1949 Leaf card set is known to have 98 cards produced in two series of 49 cards each. As detailed in Ted Zanidakis' article "1949 R401 Leaf Gum Company: Most Challenging of all "R" Sets?" (Old Cardboard magazine, Issue #9, Fall 2006, p. 32-39), only three "variation" cards have ever been reported. All three of these are relative minor variations based on the same player pose.

As might be imagined, the discovery of a never-before-reported "variation" card of Hall of Fame pitcher Hal Newhouser was met with some disbelief when it was revealed on the Vintage Baseball Card Forum late last month. The previously unreported card has been graded by PSA and displays an entirely different pose than the production card familiar to collectors of the set.

The fronts and backs of both cards are compared here. As seen, there are also notable differences in the card backs, especially in the narrative information about Newhouser's career. The promotion on the bottom one-third of the card remains unchanged.

Upon close observation, several hobby experts have concluded that this "mystery" card is definitely for real. They speculate that it was designed to be printed in the 1st series of 49 cards in the set. This speculation is based in part on the fact that the "split-color" background design used in the "prototype" is found only in the 1st Series. All of the 49 cards in the short-printed 2nd Series use a solid single-color background. Further, minor differences such as the wording "left-handed" (vs "left") for Newhouser's statistics printed on the card backs is wording that is found only on some of the 1st Series cards and not on any of the cards from the 2nd Series.

The reasons that the Newhouser "prototype" was not used in the production of the 1st series can also only be speculation at this time. Most collectors who have observed the card in person, however, agree that the prototype card is more attractive than Newhouser's production card issued with the second series.

According to Bill Huggins of Huggins & Scott Auctions, the card just showed up "with one of our customers that walked into our Baltimore store." After investigation and getting second opinions from several hobby old timers, Huggins determined that the card was in fact real and no doubt produced by Leaf in the early stages of the development of the set. Under consignment, Huggins expects to sell the card in one of their auctions early next year.

A Set Profile Page for the Leaf Gum cards, along with a checklist and the full set gallery, can be found on the Old Cardboard website.

4. Two New Players Added to Tarzan Bread Checklist

The recent discovery of a cache of 1930s baseball cards includes an astonishing group of twelve 1934 D382 Tarzan Bread cards, among the rarest of all bakery cards (or "D" cards as listed in the American Card Catalog). The discovery was reported by Andy Broome of Beckett Grading Services after the cards were submitted to the Dallas-based company for grading. The new find also includes complete sets of 1933 and 1934 Goudeys--all removed from the attic of a Detroit home after being untouched for decades.

Among the 12 Tarzan Bread cards were two players previously uncataloged. They are Boston Braves outfielder Randy Moore and St. Louis Browns pitcher George Blaeholder. This brings the set checklist to 30 known players, although it is speculated that cards for 40 to 50 players may have been originally produced.

Known examples of D382 cards are machine cut on three sides but hand cut across the bottom. Some cards are found with a cut line still visible, perhaps suggesting that the cards were originally printed with a tab or coupon at the bottom. This was likely a tab used to attach the card to a loaf of bread with which they were distributed. To our knowledge, no D382 card has ever been reported with the tab intact.

The discovery also confirms earlier evidence that the set was originally distributed in the Detroit area. Interestingly, a 1981 hobby news update about the set (see Trader Speaks, September 1981, p. 5) identifies pioneer collector Frank Nagy, also of Detroit, as "the largest holder [of D382s] in the country." According to the 1981 report, all Nagy remembered about the set "is that they were issued one to a loaf of raisin bread back in 1934." How widespread the distribution was we still do not know.

According to Broome, cards from the collection will be auctioned by Mastro in their December auction.

A summary profile of the D382 Tarzan Bread set, including an updated 30-player checklist that includes the newly discovered players, can be found on the Old Cardboard website.

5. News Briefs (A Digest of Recent Hobby Happenings)

Baseball in Wartime Newsletter. The most recent issue (Issue #14) of British journalist Gary Bedingfield's Baseball in Wartime Newsletter is now posted on his website. The issue marks the beginning of a new feature focusing on players who lost their lives in World War II. According to Bedingfield, more than 100 players with professional baseball experience died in service during the war. Two of them--Elmer Gedeon and Harry O'Neill--had a brief taste of the game at the Major League level. The others were all minor league players at various stages of their careers. Gedeon and O'Neill, as well as minor leaguers Billy Southworth, Jr., Jack Lummus and Keith Bissonnette, are profiled in Issue #14; more will be profiled in the future. You can sign up for a free copy of Bedingfield's newsletter on his website at http://www.baseballinwartime.com/.

Vintage Hold'em Update. The Old Cardboard 2008 Texas Hold'em series for vintage card collectors has now completed three-quarters of the series with three monthly tournaments to go. While Rob Dewolf (wolfie51sb) of Westerville, OH continues a commanding lead, the next four positions on the leaderboard (all qualifying for Old Cardboard prize packages) remain hotly contested. The Series Leaderboard, updated through the September tournament, has been posted on the Old Cardboard website. The October tournament (Old Cardboard #10 on the PokerStars private tournament list) is set for Tuesday, October 28. It is PokerStars tournament #110099699; password for access is R327R327. Entry fee is $11 ($10 goes directly to the tournament cash prize pool and $1 to PokerStars). Games begin at 7:30 pm Texas Time (20:30 EST). We hope to see you there and wish the best of luck to all participants.

Collecting in a Poor Economy. The tanking of the world economy in recent weeks has caused many vintage collectors to reconsider their collecting goals (and to review their collecting budgets). Based on discussions with several vintage collectors and auction houses, there seems to be relatively mild effect on vintage card prices. So far. Whether this resiliency in vintage collectibles will continue or not remains an unanswered question of considerable concern to many collectors. The general consensus, however, is that if you collect less for a card's value and more for the enjoyment of collecting, then budget permitting, your collecting goals should see little change. Those collecting primarily for investment value, however, may want to take a closer look at their timing. Ultimately, the long-term value of collectibles will follow trends in the overall economy, which will eventually recover losses and return to its upward climb.

Kevin's Weekly Collecting Tips & FAQ

Q: How are the current economic conditions affecting the sports autograph market and the sports collectibles industry in general?

Like anyone else, autograph collectors and collectors in general are concerned about the value of their collections in the context of their long-term investments. Regardless of financial storms, we have never seen a pronounced depreciation or "correction'" in the value of vintage sports autographs and collectibles, certainly not in the type that we deal with. What we do often see is an increase in the number of people who are anxious to sell their collections to raise capital, though surprisingly we have not seen that yet this time. During difficult financial times we also typically see price trends temporarily plateau and stabilize, unlike traditional assets like stocks, real estate, and precious metals-all of which see drastic and stomach-churning price fluctuations during times like these. Vintage sports autographs, particularly those from whom I like to call the 'blue-chip' names like hall of famers, hold their value and often even appreciate during recessionary times. In short, it's a great time to buy when prices are holding and people are anxious to sell-a dynamic true in any market!

2. Vintage Set Profile: 1933 Sanella Margarine

Produced on the heals of the 1932 Berlin Olympics when Germany was riding a wave of intense interest in sports, the 112 cards in this set were part of a promotion sponsored by Sanella Margarine. The set offers prime examples of the printing quality and technology used in Germany at the time.

Album Open (to page with Ruth card)

Shown above is the front cover of an album also produced to contain cards, as well as an image of the album opened to the page containing the Ruth card.

Japanese Olympian
Ruth

There is no identification on the fronts of the full color white-bordered cards. The card of Babe Ruth (shown at far right) displays Ruth an instant after making another of his many hits. The color images featured in the set are not encumbered by a title or any other labeling. However, the card backs, as well as the narrative found in the album, contain ample information on both the subject and the sponsor, all printed in German.

Ruth is one of two baseball players and the only Major League player included in the 112-card set. The other was a Japanese Olympic player (see card image at right).

Other cards from the Sanella set include leading skiers, rugby players, boxers, curlers, ice hockey players, soccer players and other athletes of the period. In addition to the cards offered as premiums, a 120-page album was also available with detailed descriptions and a space reserved for attaching each card.

Variations in the card backs have long challenged collectors. For some time, it was believed that four variations exist, designated in the hobby as Type 1 through 4. However, there is now general consensus now that Type 1 (with Sanella centered vertically on the card back and the number "83" printed on the fourth line from the top) was never produced. This leaves three back variations, labeled here by their traditional designation, as Types 2 through 4.

Astra Margarine, a "sister" brand to Sanella, also issued the 112-card series during the same time period. However, while the Sanella cards are relatively common among today's collectors, the Astra cards are extremely scarce. The most obvious difference is the printing of the Astra brand instead of "Sanella" on the card backs. Because of the scarcity of the Astra cards, it is unknown if all back variations were printed.

It is also worth noting that the Sanella/Astra Ruth card uses the same pose as that used in the black and white set sponsored by Rogers Peet, a Boston and New York clothier of the period. Interestingly, the Rogers-Peet issue was a multi-sport set was also issued along with an album for mounting.

Set Profiles for both the Sanella Margarine issue and the Rogers-Peet Clothiers cards can be found on the Old Cardboard website.

4. Great Holiday Values for Old Cardboard BackPack, Subscriptions

In the spirit of the Holidays (and in recognition of the state of the global economy), Old Cardboard is now offering some great values to our subscribers.

Through December 31, we have reduced the price of our BackPack (the complete run of Old Cardboard magazines from Issue #1 through #17) to $99 postpaid. That's a discount of more than 40 percent off of the single back-issue price and is the largest discount we have ever offered for the Old Cardboard BackPack. The BackPack plus a one year subscription starting with Issue #18 (to be delivered in mid-January 2009) would make a tremendous Holiday gift for a fellow collector or to put on your own Holiday wish list.

Speaking of subscriptions, we are also offering a substantial reduction for a one- or two-year subscription (or renewals for current subscribers). Through December 31, you can order a one-year subscription for only $19.95 or a two-year subscription for just $34.95. Renewals will be automatically added to the end of your current subscription period.

Single copies of back issues remain at $10 each postpaid via first class mail.

To take advantage of the holiday offers using PayPal, just go to the Subscriptions Page on the Old Cardboard website. Alternatively, you can call Brett at 512-466-5372 to order using a credit card. Either way, we wish for you a happy and joyous holiday season and a prosperous 2009.

5. News Briefs (A Digest of Recent Hobby Happenings)

New Back Variations Reported for W514s. Ted Golden, author of "Historic 1920-21 W514s: The 'T206' of Strip Card Sets" (Old Cardboard, Issue #11, Spring 2007, p. 14-21) has uncovered two previously unknown back variations associated with the set. Both are variations to cards sponsored by Hendlers Ice Cream. All known Hendlers backs begin with the printed label "Hendlers Ice Cream, 'The Velvet Kind...'" followed by a one or two line slogan. The two newest slogan variations are "...A Smile Follows the Spoon" and "...In The Triple Sealed Package." Because the vast majority of W514 cards have blank backs, the printed backs for any sponsor are considered extremely rare.

2008 Hold'em Series Enters Home Stretch. With ten of the twelve Texas Hold'em Tournaments of the Old Cardboard 2008 Series now complete, Rob Dewolf (wolfie51sb) is holding on to a commanding lead. OC's own Brett Hardeman (BrettHardemn) has now pulled into second place, still eight points down from first. Rounding out the top five prize winning positions are Steve Murray (Zeenut), Andrew Adaboi (PDXPCL), and Scott Brockelman (sb2charlie). With several others only a point or two down, positions 2 through 5 remain very much up for grabs. REMINDER: The November and December tournaments are each moved up one week (from the fourth Tuesday to the third Tuesday of the month) because of the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. The Series Leaderboard, updated through the October tournament, has been posted on the Old Cardboard website. The November tournament (Old Cardboard #11 on the PokerStars private tournament list) is set for Tuesday, November 18. It is PokerStars tournament #120103379; password for access is m116m116. Entry fee is $11 ($10 goes directly to the tournament cash prize pool and $1 to PokerStars). Games begin at 7:30 pm Texas Time (20:30 EST). See the Old Cardboard website for Full Details of the 2008 Series. We hope to see you there and wish the best of luck to all participants.

All signers have added his college team and all display together. The "Ernie Davis Syracuse" signature is front and center and is clearly readable, rating a "5-6" on a scale of "1-10." Davis became the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy in 1961. Shortly thereafter, he was diagnosed with terminal leukemia. He died in 1963 at the tender age of just 23. 2008 National League team ring presented at the all-star game MLB breakfast to an NL team coach. This is NOT a salesman sample OR a replica of any kind-this is the 'real McCoy' and it comes in its original box along with a letter from the coach to whom it belonged! All Star game rings seldom come to market and this is the first such ring from the historic 2008 game that to be sold that we are aware of. Kevin's Weekly Collecting Tips & FAQ

Q: There seems to be an endless supply of Babe Ruth autographs. How many actually exist?

The obvious answer is that it is not possible to know either the number of times Babe Ruth signed his name or the number of signatures that still exist. Any figure one would throw out is simply an estimate. Having said that and considering both the writing of his name for mundane purposes such as signing checks or registering at a hotel and signing an autograph as one in the same, I am quite certain that I have seen many thousands, perhaps even tens of thousands of Ruth-signed items over the years These items include: photos-all sizes from small ones cut from newspapers to 16x20's and one or two even larger than that, letters, documents (including his last will and testament signed just days before he passed), baseballs-single-signed, multi-signed, and team balls, album pages, 3x5's, GPC's, napkins--both cloth and paper, bats, hats, ping-pong and other paddles, checks, receipts, scorecards, baseball mitts, business cards, train schedules, hotel stationery, hotel registries, matchbooks, postage stamps, and postal covers. You name it, if it existed during his lifetime and it could be written on, Ruth was asked to sign it and apparently he complied with those requests most, if not all, of the time.

2. Featured Set: 1906 Columbus Dispatch Postcards

This set of sixteen postcards was issued 1906. The cards and were originally acquired by redeeming a coupon found in the Columbus Dispatch newspaper. The Dispatch was (and still is) the largest newspaper in Columbus, Ohio.

Of the sixteen cards in the set, only two are baseball related. The one depicting the Columbus team (see top image at left) is the most common, perhaps because it was used as a promotional card for the full set. The caption at the bottom of this team card reads "Columbus Baseball Team for 1906. Twice Champions of the American Association."

The other baseball-themed card from the set depicts an in-progress game (see bottom image at left). The caption on this card reads "16,195 Fans watching the July 1 Base Ball Game between Columbus and Toledo."

The other 14 subjects in the series picture landmark buildings around Columbus and are also relatively common for cards from a century-old card set.

An example back from the postcard set is shown in the image below. As seen, it was printed just prior to the change in U. S. Postal Service rules that allowed messages to be written on postcard backs, and thus carries the message "This Side for Address Only." However, the USPS rules apparently did allow a brief promotional message to be printed on the back and evident on this example. The message on this card also explains how the cards from the set were originally acquired: "This Series of Columbus Dispatch Post Cards Consists of 16 subjects. A Post Card Coupon cut from The Dispatch gets you one card; 15 coupons get you the entire series. No charge."

The set was apparently printed and distributed in late 1906 (clearly, after the American Association championship was determined). However, cards from the set are often seen today with 1907 postmarks. It should also be noted that the team again claimed the Association title in 1907.

It is also interesting to note the the player on the top row (furthest to the left) of the team card above was photographically "added" to the original image.

Most of the starting nine on the Columbus team were veterans of the major leagues. One of them, outfielder Ollie Pickering, claims the distinction of being the American League’s first batter. On opening day of the circuit’s first major league campaign in 1901, three of the four scheduled games were rained out. The only one played was Cleveland at Chicago and Pickering was the Indians’ leadoff man.

Old Cardboard reader Rob Dewolf, who lives in Columbus (and coincidentally works at The Dispatch), reports that he sees these quite often at local antique shows and shops. "If these were at all rare," says Dewolf, "I'd have already snooped around old storage closets, looking for a few unopen cases. But they're not, so I haven't."

Even more coincidentally, Rob has just won the 2008 Old Cardboard Texas Hold'em Championship Series (for details, see Item 4 below and visit the Monthly Winners and Leaderboard for the 2008 Trophy page on the Old Cardboard website). The website has also been updated to include a Profile of the Columbus Dispatch postcard premium issue, as well as a long-awaited checklist and comprehensive gallery of the two-card set.

4. Rob Dewolf Wins Old Cardboard Hold'em Championship for 2008

Its now official. Rob Dewolf (wolfie51sb) has clinched the title as this year's Grand Champion of the Old Cardboard Texas Hold'em Series. And there's still one tournament still to play!

As the 2008 Grand Champion, Rob will receive a "Roving Trophy" with a panel inscribed showing him as the 2008 winner. The trophy will reside with Rob throughout 2009, then be forwarded to the new winner for 2009. An add-on brass plate inscribed with each new Champion's name will be provided by Old Cardboard. The trophy, as shown here, features a four-inch poker chip atop a black marble base. As 2008 Champion, Rob will hold the Roving Trophy during 2009 as well as other prizes.

As of the completion of the November Tournament, Rob has accumulated 23 points, placing him eight points ahead of three other players now tied in second place position (each now totals 15 points). That's more than enough to cinch first place in the 12-tournament 2008 Series. The December tournament which completes the 2008 Series will be played December 16. The next four prize-winning positions (positions 2 through 5) will be determined in that contest. To join the fun, login to PokerStars Private tournament Old Cardboard #12 (PokerStars #121567478; Password to register is t3t4t5).

The tournaments are sponsored by Old Cardboard exclusively for vintage card and memorabilia collectors, with all subscribers of Old Cardboard magazine eligible to earn points toward the Trophy and other prizes. A follow-up Series is planned for 2009. Details can will be posted on the Old Cardboard website.

5. News Briefs (A Digest of Recent Hobby Happenings)

Auction Activity Continues Despite Economy. Despite the sluggish economy and some reports of the softening of sales of vintage cards, the usual Winter auction activity continues unabated. With several vintage events in December already past, more are scheduled. As the above Events Calendar shows, Mastro Auctions is conducting its "Legends" Live Auction this coming Monday (December 8) at the Sports Museum of America in New York City. The "Legends of the Diamond" session of the auction will feature 80 lots of exceptional vintage baseball cards and memorabilia. The Mastro Legends event is followed by other key vintage auctions organized by Historic Auctions, Memory Lane, and a Sports and Americana Catalog finale for the year by Mastro--all before Christmas.

Legacy Sports Rarities Announces Inaugural Catalog Auction. Aside from all of the above auction activity and a couple of new shows and auctioneers that launched in 2008, at least one new vintage card and memorabilia veteran will be throwing his hat into the auctioneer's ring in 2009. Thus, Legacy Sports Rarities recently announced its first auction, scheduled to close on March 28, 2009. Legacy was founded in 2002 by veteran hobbyist and dealer Greg Bussineau. The auction will feature several hundred lots including several high-grade Old Judge Hall-of-Famers; a PSA 3 Gypsy Queen of Tim Keefe; PSA 8 N28’s of Cap Anson and John Clarkson; a PSA 4 E90-1 of Joe Jackson and a large group of high-grade T206s.

Kevin's Weekly Collecting Tips & FAQ

Q: Collecting popular teams:
what teams are the most widely collected and how difficult is it to assemble the signatures of these team members?

Many collectors try to assemble autographs of entire teams or at least the prominent players and/or starting line-ups of a specific team. The most widely collected teams through the 1970's, not necessarily in this order, include:

1919 White/"Black" Sox (fixed world series outcome)

1919 Reds (world champion benefactors of fixed world series)

1923 Yankees (first Yankees' world championship team)

1927 Yankees ("Murderer's Row" world champions)

1929-1931 Athletics (World champions 1929-30 and
AL champions 1931)

1934 Cardinals ("Gashouse Gang" world champions)

1954 Orioles (inaugural franchise team)

1955 Dodgers (only Brooklyn franchise world championship)

1960 Pirates (world champions who defeated the mighty Yankees despite being outscored in the world series, 55-27)

1961 Yankees(world champions)

1962 Mets (inaugural franchise team beloved for their record-setting incompetence of 120 losses against just 40 wins)

1969 "Miracle" Mets (first franchise world championship)

1969 Cubs (beloved for their unattained greatness and late-season collapse)

1969 Pilots (only one-year MLB franchise in the 20th century)

1975 Reds (world champions nicknamed "The Big Red Machine")

In the coming weeks we will analyze the difficulty of accumulating the individual member signatures on flat items of some of these teams, beginning with what we believe to be the most widely collected team, the 1927 Yankees.

We welcome your comments or questions as well to post in future newsletters.

2. Book Review: The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890)

Frontispiece
Taking on a project to bring new perspective to any nineteenth century topic is a challenging task requiring tedious research, untiring patience and access to vast resources. In their newly published book, The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890), authors Jay Miller, Joe Gonsowski and Richard Masson pulled it off. The result is a stunningly comprehensive study of the most popular and most important baseball card sets of the nineteenth century.

In the Foreword, Hall of Fame Announcer Ernie Harwell pretty well sums it up: "Whether you are a serious collector, a baseball fan, or just someone who appreciates the historical beauty of the early printing art, you are in for a treat." Harwell, who celebrates his 91st birthday later this month, should know. He collected Goodwin & Company cards in his youth and part of his collection of baseball cards and memorabilia can now be viewed in the Harwell Room, named in his honor, at the Detroit Public Library.

The nine by eleven-inch compendium spans nearly 500 pages and is illustrated with thousands of card images, tables and charts. All full color images are reproduced to the highest standards of quality, making the volume a virtual museum of nineteenth century baseball cards produced by Goodwin & Company. The convenient size makes it ideal for either a coffee table display or for storing on the shelf of a reference library.

Key sections of the book include background information on the sponsor, the baseball leagues of the period that are represented in the set, production processes and more. The Table of Contents provides more complete listing of its key sections. They are:

Appendix 2: Short Number Series

Appendix 3: "0" Numbered Series

Appendix 4: Photographers Used By Goodwin & Co.

Appendix 5: Two-Player Cards
The heart of the book is the extensive section titled "Player Biographies" that spans more than two-thirds of the total pages. Here, short biographies are provided for each of the 521 subjects covered in the Old Judge set.

Page 186 (Card Images and Short Bios for
Roger Conner [HOFer] and Dick Conway)

An example page from the Player Biographies section is displayed at left on which the cards and biographies for Roger Connor and Dick Conway are provided. Connor is one of 27 players from the Old Judge set that are now members of the baseball Hall of Fame, and is identified as such in white letters over a red panel.

In this typical page layout, all known poses for each player are displayed along with a tabular checklist keyed to a card numbering system developed by the British Cartophilic Society. The player's team and league as depicted on the card is also listed in the table.

Because each player entry displays card images of all known poses, the section serves as an impressive photo checklist of cards for the entire set.

Overall, the book is without doubt the most comprehensive ever published on any vintage baseball card set (actually several closely related sets all produced by Goodwin & Co.). Browsing it is eye candy for the reader and a "must have" for any collector's vintage card library.

The book is self published and available from the authors for $125. For further information or to obtain a copy, contact Richard Masson at 1158 26th Street, #537, Santa Monica, CA 90403.
