2. Hall of Fame Rookie Card Database Now Live
Thanks to a tremendous effort by collector Phil Garry, an informative new section has now been added to the Old Cardboard website. The database-driven section is, in essence, a photo-checklist and description of the earliest five cards for each of the current 289 members of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
From Grover Alexander to Cy Young--and nearly 300 HOFers in between--the checklist and card images are provided to augment an article that Garry has written for the Fall 2009 issue (Issue #21) of Old Cardboard magazine. The magazine is on schedule for delivery by mid-November.
To access the new section from the Old Cardboard home page, select the "Reference Data" text link, then click "Hall of Fame Rookie Card Database." The section can also be accessed directly by clicking here.
The database contains detailed records for each of the nearly three hundred Hall of Fame members. For most players, their earliest, or "Top Five" cards are identified, then organized generally in the order that the cards were originally produced.
The player checklist page can be filtered for each of the five Hall of Fame Categories: Player, Manager, Pioneer/Executive, Negro Leaguer and Umpire. In addition, the HOF Member listing also displays, where applicable, their first and last year in the Major Leagues, the year of induction into the Hall of Fame and the Hall of Fame Category, along with the identity of their "key" Rookie Card set.
The database listings can be sorted by player last name (default), Year of Induction, or Hall of Fame Category.
Links to each member then return the above summary data along with a brief narrative about their earliest (Top Five) cards. Career details provided by Baseball-Reference.com can also be accessed via direct link for all Hall of Fame members who played in the Major Leagues.
Example card images are provided where available for each of the earliest five "rookie cards" for each member. Images for more than 90 percent of these earliest five cards are now complete. The remaining card images will be added as they are gathered--with assistance from our readers.
We recognize that identifying the "Top Five Rookie Cards" for each player may be the subject of some debate among readers. We welcome feedback and opinions about how the top five cards should be ordered or if some already on the list should be dropped and others added. If you would like to voice your opinion, please email Phil at vguerrerobb@yahoo.com with a copy to editor@oldcardboard.com.
Phil has agreed to review all input and reply to all reader feedback. Because the information is online and database-driven, we will continue to update the listings (and add new Hall of Fame inductees each year) as the information becomes available.
We hope that maintaining such an up-to-date database of all Hall of Fame members along with example images of their earliest cards will make identification easier when searching for these collectibles.
Happy Hall of Fame Rookie Card Collecting!

4. Book Review: Baseball Americana
The vast collections of vintage baseball cards and memorabilia now residing at the nation's foremost library provide the extensive illustrations used in the just released volume, Baseball Americana: Treasures from the Library of Congress. The lavishly illustrated book printed in a 9-1/2 x 12 inch coffee-table format not only documents the history of America's Game, but provides eye candy for collectors and non-collectors alike.
Published by Smithsonian Books (an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers), the volume is authored by Harry Katz (former head curator in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress and a lifelong Red Sox fan), Frank Ceresi (a well-known baseball writer and Old Cardboard contributor), Phil Michel (who manages the Library's Prints and photographs Division archive of more than a million images) and Wilson McBee and Susan Reyburn (editors in the Library's Publishing Office).
More than 350 illustrations are found in the book--many never before published. They feature a variety of players, ballparks, vintage baseball card images, baseball sheet music, historical photos and other documents. The narrative and illustrations begin with baseball's early origins of the late nineteenth century and progress through the late 1970s.
All of the "treasures" described in the book reside today either in the LOC's main facility at the Jefferson Building, just across from the U. S. Capitol building, or in the nearby Madison Building. Together, they are derived from among eight divisions of the Library.
Tobacco Package Label (registered with the LOC in 1867)
Co-author Ceresi grew up in Alexandria, Virginia, "just across the Potomac" from the Library. His first exposure to the Library began as a ninth grader working on a school research assignment.
According to Ceresi, his role in researching Baseball Americana involved "a two year journey delving into the nooks and crannies at the Library. Where did we go and what did we see? You name it. We uncovered baseball prints, photographs, illustrations, posters, sheet music, film, post cards, newspapers, comics and ephemera of every kind and type."
"And we only scratched the surface!," Ceresi adds.
One example of the numerous color illustrations from the book is shown at left--identified as a tobacco package label. It is registered as item #1062 and filed with the Library on December 18, 1867 by Rube & Weikel, Proprietors. Interestingly, the woodcut engraving pictures a game in progress, a large crowd of spectators in the background and what appears to be an umpire sitting under an umbrella outside the first base path.
Baseball Americana: Treasures From the Library of Congress is available at bookstores. Retail price is $29.99 and can be found discounted from several online sellers. An eBook version is also available.
Note: selected example pages from the book as well as the Table of Contents and a complete Index can be viewed on the publisher's website.

5. News Briefs (A Digest of Recent Hobby Happenings)
Looking Back: Baseball's Biggest Scandal. It's now been ninety years since the Fall of 1919 and the World Series that marked one of the biggest controversies in baseball history--the infamous Black Sox scandal. While the eight Chicago White Sox players charged with fixing the Series were acquitted by a Grand Jury, newly-appointed baseball commissioner Kenesaw Landis banned them from baseball for life. Remarkably, vintage cards for seven of the eight "Black Sox" players can be found today in the popular W514 Strip Card Set issued in 1920-21 (including most notably Shoeless Joe Jackson). Fred McMullin is the only one of the eight not found in the W514 set.
Oldest Big Leaguer Turns 100. Tony Malinosky, who played infield for the 1937 Brooklyn Dodgers, turned 100 years young earlier this month. He was born October 5, 1909 and is the oldest living Big League player. Now living in California, he remains an avid Dodgers fan. During World War II, Malinosky fought in the Battle of the Bulge. We wish him health and happiness for many years to come.
Issue #21 on Track for November Delivery. Old Cardboard magazine Issue #21 (Fall 2009) is on schedule for distribution the middle of November as promised. In addition to Phil Garry's cover feature about "Collecting Hall of Fame Rookie Cards" (see eNews article #2 above), the issue includes articles written by hobby veterans Barry Sloate ("Brooklyn vs Philadelphia and the Baseball Battles of 1865") and Bill Cornell ("1911 Stevens Firearms Blotters: Connie Mack and his Starting Nine"). It also contains Part II of Jeff Schwarz' two-part blockbuster overview of vintage gum and candy wrappers. A Preview of the issue, including a cover image, table of contents and abstracts with thumbnail layouts for each article can be viewed on the Old Cardboard website. If you have not renewed your subscription, it is not to late to do it online now.
Renewal Reminder. As we complete our fifth year of on-time publication, a number of our charter subscriber's subscriptions expire with Issue #20 (Summer 2009). Reminder notices will (have been) sent. ..................... The easiest method for extending your subscription is over the Internet using PayPal. We do know that Murray has done at least one private signing. Sheppard has never done a signing that we know of. He has also never answered any of our mail requests for his signature, and we have rarely seen his autograph surface on flat items of any kind. Summary: One reason this team is so widely collected is that it is possible to readily obtain nearly all of its members. Moreover, most of the players can be found for a reasonable cost and all of its key members can be readily obtained if one has the means to acquire them. For the completionist, however, Duke Maas can be a challenge to find from those players who appeared in at least one game for this storied team. "STEAM & CINDERS" CHRONICLES THE BOOM AND BUST OF THE FIRST RAILROADS IN WISCONSIN
"Railroads have been around for so long that they seem like part of the landscape. But where, when, and how they developed was far from inevitable, as Axel Lorenzsonn shows in his thorough and superb study of the coming of the Iron Horse to Wisconsin. Steam & Cinders should be required reading for any student of railroads or the development of the Upper Midwest." -Robert S. McGonigal, editor of "Classic Trains" magazine
In "Steam & Cinders: The Advent of Railroads in Wisconsin", author Axel Lorenzsonn brings the history of Wisconsin's earliest railroads to life, painting a vivid picture of the competition and risk that accompanied the building of Wisconsin's earliest statewide infrastructure in the years leading up to the Civil War. From the railroad lines that traverse open prairie to the wrought iron rails embedded in their wooden ties, railroads have been written into the landscape - and shared history - of Wisconsin. Yet few of us have thought about how they developed in the towns and cities we call home. This is the story of linemen who laid track through harsh winters; the story of railroad barons like Byron Kilbourn whose vision for economic expansion was matched by his strongarming tactics; the story of the glory days of the early rails, when the coming of the railroad would receive not only public notice but great fanfare and celebration in the small towns that lay along the line. Featuring more than 75 period photographs, historic maps, and drawings, "Steam & Cinders" preserves the legacy of early Wisconsin railroading for railroad buffs and armchair historians alike.
The Wisconsin Historical Society Press, founded in 1855, is the state's oldest publisher. # # #
About the Author: Axel Lorenzsonn has worked for Wisconsin's Department of Workforce Development for 25 years and is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A life-long history buff, he has delved into the history of Wisconsin's early railroads for the past 14 years and is an active member of several railroading associations including the Milwaukee Road Historical Society and the Chicago & North Western Historical Society. Final Exquisite Basketball Product Due Out Sept. 30
When Upper Deck released 2003-04 NBA Exquisite, the trading card market was forever changed. Never before had collectors seen innovative cards packing this much quality which is one of the reasons why a single pack of that product routinely sells for more than $3,000. On Sept. 21, Upper Deck announced that it will be releasing the company's final NBA Exquisite set ever on Sept. 30. In addition to having Exquisite rookie cards from some of the top 2009-10 NBA draftees, some great retrospective inserts have been created paying homage to the heritage of the Exquisite brand. In 2009-10 Exquisite, Upper Deck honors the most valuable modern day rookie card: 2003-04 LeBron James Exquisite RC (#78). Upper Deck is bringing back that particular card design as a limited insert with some of the sporting world's biggest names like Michael Jordan, Julius Erving, John Elway, Barry Sanders, Sidney Crosby, and Wayne Gretzky. The ever popular "Triple Logoman Patch" cards and "Dual Logoman Autographed Patch" cards return as well making this Exquisite release a most memorable one.

-------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------- Revisiting The Grand Old Game Of Tennis
Clearly, my failure to keep track of the modern tennis game has left me extraordinarily out of touch with a sport that used to grab my attention from time to time many years ago.
As I suspect it was for millions of others, the US Open provided the opportunity to visit an old friend, so to speak, but by golly virtually all of the names have changed when I wasn't looking. Most of the folks I remember are sitting in the broadcast booth. I am not proud of any of this deplorable ignorance, just reporting.
I'd always been tickled by the female section, remembering the incredible battles between Chris Everett and Martina; it sounds silly to say it, but I'd always kind of thrilled to the audio portion, the grunts of exertion for the gals, and the occasional verbal tirade at the various officials by some of the guys.

Upper Deck's McWilliam Kicks Off Tuff Stuff's 'Ask The Execs' Series
The 2009 calendar year has brought us in the collectibles business several important changes to the hobby landscape. Whether it was the Donruss sale, Upper Deck's new deal with the Collegiate Licensing Company or the recent announcement by Major League Baseball naming Topps as its exclusive licensing partner for 2010, the winds of change are blowing strong in the industry and those changes have prompted numerous questions. We at Tuff Stuff want to answer the many questions these changes have brought with them. To do so, we went straight to the top of the food chain and asked the executives who make the decisions that shape the hobby.
In an effort to provide our customers with the answers they want, we've come up with a new Tuff Stuff series entitled "Ask The Execs." The series will feature exclusive interviews with the most influential industry leaders including Upper Deck CEO, Richard McWilliam, Panini America CEO Michael Eisenstein and Topps Vice President Warren Friss. The series will kickoff in our next issue (December cover date) so look for our first exclusive Q&A session with UD CEO Richard McWilliam coming soon. Look for the interviews with Eisenstein and Friss in the January and February issues of Tuff Stuff's Sports Collectors Monthly.
For a sampling of the exclusive interview with McWilliam, click here. To learn more about the series, click here.
---------------------------------------------------- --------------------------- An Autograph Collection To Die For
There is no more dedicated group of fans of the game of baseball in general and the long since departed Philadelphia Athletics in particular, so when the Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society puts together a memorabilia project, you know it's a first-class affair.
Under the able administration of Ernie Montella, who coordinated theproject, the second series of the Diamond Signatures Autographed Card Set is now available, with a miniscule 100 sets available to the public out of the total 125 produced.

-------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------- Collecting NFL HOF Autographs: It's Hall Good
If the names Hugh Ray, Charles Bidwell and Tim Mara aren't familiar to you, you're obviously not an NFL Hall of Fame autograph collector. To those familiar with the collecting genre, the names represent the Holy Grail, the rarest of the rare, the signatures at the top of almost of everybody's wish list.
While some autograph collectors search for a select few ballplayers to build on, others search for entire categories. For NFL HOF autograph collectors, the recent additions of the 2009 inductees bumped that complete list to 253 players.
For frequent guest signers like Raymond Berry, Paul Hornung and Yale Lary, the opportunities to acquire an example are plentiful and the autographs can be had relatively cheaply. But for players that rarely applied their John Hancocks to anything other than their own personal documents, the search can be an exhaustive and expensive one.
For one such collector, the pursuit of all 253 signatures began more than 20 years ago and remains one of his top priorities today.

-------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------- Photo File Inc. Strikes Gold With Jeter Collectibles
Photo File, Inc. reported stronger than expected sales for their higher-priced items commemorating Derek Jeter's historic 2,722nd hit.
"We expected strong sales of photos of Jeter's historic hit, but we have been pleasantly surprised with the demand for our higher priced items such as plaques and framed photos," said Rob Golove, vice president of marketing.

2. It's CON-TENT-NA
T128 Front T128 Back
In eNewsletter #50 (June 2008), we profiled the two subsets ("First Series" and "Photo Series") that are designated together in the American Card Catalog (ACC) as T209 Contentnea Cigarettes (see "Vintage Set Profile: 1910 T209 Contentnea Cigarettes").
There seems to be some confusion about the correct pronunciation of the cigarette brand that sponsored the T209 cards. The correct pronunciation is clarified, however, in another (non-baseball) set produced to promote the same brand. This sister set is designated in the ACC as T128 and is believed to have also been produced in 1910. It is sometimes referred to as the "Indian by Waterfall" set.
The text on the back of all cards in this set explains the origin (and provides the correct pronunciation) of the "Contentnea" name. It reads as follows:
"Tradition tells us that the Indian was the first user of tobacco, hence, his picture has since been the sign of a cigar when the Red Man was monarch of the forest. He gave the name Contentnea (pronounced CON-TENT-NA) to a small stream of water, situate in what is now known as Wilson County, NC. The waters of this rivulet were calm and pellucid; fish and game abounded, and that section adjacent to Contentnea, was considered good hunting grounds. This bit of history prompted us in selecting the name of Contentnea Cigarettes." So there we have it...straight from the company that named themselves after the "rivulet" in North Carolina.
The map at left identifies the approximate area of the Contentnea watershed, which encompasses the present day town of Wilson, as well as Wilson County and surrounding areas in North Carolina.
The T128 cards are from an obscure tobacco set and are somewhat unique in that all cards in the set display essentially the same front and back. The fronts of all cards feature a native American Indian on the bank with a waterfall in the background.
For reasons unknown to today's collectors, each card contains a number printed in small type in the top right corner ("103" in the above example). The numbers range up to about 140. However, to date, cards with only about 30-40 different numbers have been noted.
The two 1910 T210 Contentnea baseball card series are profiled on the Old Cardboard website, including a Checklist and Gallery of the T209-1 "First Series." Thanks to Steve Mace of Moore, South Carolina for supplying the T128 example card pictured above.

4. Book Review: "Sweet Recollections" by Eric Varon
The two baseball card sets produced by the Philadelphia Caramel Company in the early nineteenth century are just two of the thirteen known sets produced by the company. The baseball cards are designated as sets E95 and E96 in the "American Card Catalog" (see examples below). Other sets produced by the company feature diverse subjects including boxers, military uniforms and accessories, domestic dogs, Native American Indian leaders, "airships" and a variety of "Zoo" birds, animals and fish.
All of these card sets, as well as painstakingly researched details about the company's owners and their competitors in the confectionery markets of the region are discussed in vintage collector Eric Varon's recently released book, "Sweet Recollections: The Story of the Philadelphia Caramel Company of Camden, New Jersey."
Following a foreword by well known hobbyist and auctioneer Robert Lifson, Varon's book is divided into three parts. The first part tells the story of the region's confectionery trade and the two pioneers that founded Philadelphia Caramel Company. Here, Varon uses actual newspaper accounts and a variety of public records to document his narrative.
The next several chapters of Varon's book are devoted to a discussion of the premiums offered by Philadelphia Caramel. Part III includes an appendix of detailed checklists for each of the thirteen card sets produced by the company from about 1907 through 1915.
E95 Wagner E96 Arrelanes --
The book's illustrations include several images of the company's founders, early factories, and front and back examples from each of the thirteen card sets that the company produced.
In his conclusions, Varon devotes several pages to his observations about a children's writing tablet (see example at left). The notebook is thought to have been produced shortly after the distribution of the baseball card sets. Several such notebooks have become known to the hobby--all in the past decade--and they help to explain the occasional discovery of blank-backed versions of the Philadelphia Caramel baseball cards, which were cut from the notebooks.
There are no markings on the notebooks to tie them directly to the Philadelphia Caramel company and Varon makes the case that they were likely produced by another company. Card images of five players are found on each notebook cover, and all player images are found in either the E95 or E96 Philadelphia Caramel card sets.
A Checklist and full Set Gallery is provided on the Old Cardboard website for both of the baseball card sets produced by the Philadelphia Caramel.
"Sweet Recollections: The Story of the Philadelphia Caramel Company of Camden, New Jersey" can be ordered using PayPal directly from the author's website at www.PhiladelphiaCaramel.com. Price is $15.40 including first class shipping.

In the past, most of these cards have been known as "draft pick" or "professional prospect" cards. Upper Deck's program will look to expand upon the current usage of collegiate marks and put a new focus on the athletes' collegiate accomplishments, as well as feature mascots, stadiums, and traditions unique to the college market.

Mets Delgado Suing Long Island Memorabilia Dealer New York Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado sued a Long Island sports memorabilia dealer for $2.4 million, claiming it dropped the ball on its exclusive contract. Delgado claims the men who run Authentic Memorabilia agreed to sell more than $400,000 worth of his signed and used merchandise, but kept the stuff for themselves and intentionally mishandled assets so they would not have enough money to pay him.
Delgado claims the man did not offer the items for sale to the public. He claims defendants Nitin Doshi, Anish Berry, Spencer Lader and Mark Gelfand kept the items for themselves and did not pay a cent for them. Delgado claims the officers even filed false tax returns to reap personal tax benefits.
Delgado is represented in Nassau County Court by Shalom Schwartz with Natiss & Gordon.

While everyone would like to own a T206 Wagner card, we want to hear about the item you would love to own for personal, not monetary reasons.
I myself am a huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan and I would love to own a collage-type photo of all their Super Bowl winning teams in Steeler history signed by many of the team's prominent players. Sure it would be worth a pretty penny, but the sentimental value would be priceless. That's my "Dream Collectible," now we want to hear about yours. 2. Vintage Set Summary: 1920-21 W516 Strip Cards
W516-1 W516-2-1 W516-2-2 (all cards shown at approximate actual size)
The set designated as W516 in the American Card Catalog is actually three distinct but closely related series. For better identification, each of the three subsets have been assigned a suffix (i.e., W516-1, W516-2-1, and W516-2-2). Each set contains 30 cards, and all have blank backs.
All cards are very nearly the same size, measuring approximately 1-1/2 by 2-3/8 inches.
The W516-1 subset was issued in 1920 as the first of the three. The other two sets came the following year, and were essentially re-issues of the 1920 set. Without exception, the same players and poses were repeated for each issue.
Cards in all three sets have colored images. Twenty cards in each set are portraits of the players in uniform. However, the remaining ten cards display full-length action shots. The images for the sets were provided by the International Feature Service, and the cards display the IFS copyright symbol in the lower portion of the image.
However, significant differences between the subsets make identifying each set relatively easy. The first set (W516-1) is best identified as the only one of the three in which the IFS copyright symbol is NOT reversed. Likewise, the W516-2-1 set is unique in that it uses ONLY red and blue coloring on the cards; there is liberal use of yellow and green, as well as red and blue, in the other sets.
There is a pronounced difference in the lettering between the two W516-2 series. W516-2-1 cards are labeled at the bottom in a serif typeface, while the labeling on the W516-2-2 cards resemble more closely the hand labeling of the W516-1 set.
There is no apparent rationale or pattern that determines the numbering for any of the sets. Curiously, the second and third sets were renumbered by dividing the checklist for the first set into three equal sequences of ten cards each (specifically, card numbers 1-10, 11-20, and 21-30), then reversing the order within each of the three sequences (see the Player Checklist on the Old Cardboard website for details).
W516-1 Burns Card #10 Normal Image W516-2-2 Burns Card #1 Mirrored Image
The sequences of card numbers were not the only features that were reversed in the second two sets. In both of these sets, the images of the players on all cards were also inverted, making them mirror images of the first set. The inversion also applied to the IFS copyright symbol.
The differences between the inverted and non-inverted cards are somewhat subtle for players with portrait poses because of the general symmetry of the image. However, the inversion becomes more significant for players in full-length action poses. On these cards, normally right-handed throwers such as Giants outfielder George Burns in the W516-1 set become "left-handed throwers" in the follow-up sets (see images at right).
Similarly, Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby bats right (normally) in the first set, but becomes a left-handed batter in the W516-2-1 and W516-2-2 subsets.
A Set Profile page for the W516 Strip Cards is provided on the Old Cardboard website. A Player Checklist that cross-references the card numbers in each subset is also provided, as well as a complete 30-card Gallery for the W516-1 subset.

4. Old Cardboard Magazine Issue #20 Now in Subscriber Hands
Issue #20 (Summer 2009) of Old Cardboard magazine is currently being distributed. If you haven't received yours yet it should be delivered in the next few days.
The cover (shown at right) highlights the lead article in the issue: "1907 PC778 Morgan Stationery: A Color First in Baseball Postcards" by Robert Silverman. Second-time Old Cardboard author Silverman, a widely recognized expert on vintage baseball postcards, shares the results of his research into this interesting and colorful set. The article includes a full gallery of cards, examples of key variations and an annotated checklist of cards.
Collector Jeff Schwarz provides the second article in the issue: Part I of a comprehensive overview of virtually all gum and candy card wrappers of the 1930s, 40s and 50s. The wrappers are grouped alphabetically by manufacturer, then arranged chronologically by issue date within groups. Part I covers wrappers issued by manufacturers Berk-Ross, Bowman, DeLong, Dietz, Fleer, General Gum, George C. Miller, Goudey and Gum, Inc. Part II, to be published in the next issue of Old Cardboard magazine (Issue #21), will cover wrappers produced by Gum Products, Leaf, National Chicle, Orbit Gum, Overland Candy, Ruth Candy, Schutter-Johnson, Topps and U. S. Caramel. In total, some 120 wrappers are profiled along with images of them all.
Another article in the Summer 2009 issue provides details of a scam exposed earlier this year by several collectors and investigated by the FBI. The staff-written report, "Collectors Collaborate to Foil Hobby Scammer" describes the fake and supposedly rare variations in several T206 cards with Old Mill backs used in the scam. Additional information about the scam and the scammer are provided, as well as a side panel checklist of eleven ways to avoid becoming the victim of a vintage baseball card scam.
On a much more positive note, author Ed Weyhing provides a few details of conversations that he remembers with his great uncle Gus Weyhing. What we find most fascinating about this article is that it provides first hand anecdotes about Gus Weyhing, born at the close of the Civil War and a truly stand-out pitcher of the late nineteenth century, as told by a grand-nephew. Now 72 years young and living in Middletown, Rhode Island, author Ed Weyhing relates some of the times during his youth that he spent with "Uncle Gus."
Issue #20 can be ordered on-line (either as a single issue or as the first of a one-year subscription) from the Subscriptions Page of the Old Cardboard website.
Looking Back... and to the Future Issue #20 of Old Cardboard magazine (profiled above) marks the completion of five years of publication. As Brett and I step back to reflect on the production of these first twenty issues, we take considerable satisfaction in the fact that all were produced on schedule with quality content that stayed focused exclusively on vintage (50 years old or older) baseball cards and memorabilia. All magazines were produced in full color on quality stock.
As we look forward (and in recognition of ongoing trends in print media publishing), we have decided to place a little more emphasis on the Old Cardboard website and our monthly eNewsletters. As a result, we are reducing the frequency of publication for the magazine from four to three issues annually. Thus, the interval between issues of the magazine will increase from three to four months. The first issue under this new schedule will be Issue #21 (Fall 2009), to be delivered in mid-November rather than mid-October. The new schedule will then include issues planned each year for distribution in mid-March (Spring), mid-July (Summer) and mid-November (Fall).
All current subscriptions will expire with the same issue number as they do now. For example, if your subscription expires with Issue #23 (the number is printed next to your name on the mailing label of each magazine), the last magazine under your current subscription will be the Summer 2010 issue. The price for all new subscriptions and renewals will be $17.95 for one year (three issues at $6.00 per issue) or $32.95 for a two-year subscription (six issues at $5.50 per issue). Single issue cover price will remain at $10. Please keep in mind also that all magazines are distributed postpaid via first class mail.
The pipeline of quality articles for future magazines (as well as mini-articles for the monthly eNewsletter and projects for website expansion) is as strong as it has been at any time in the past five years. We look forward to these new projects and believe that the new magazine production schedule will free time needed for their successful and timely completion.
We sincerely appreciate the overwhelming support that we have received from authors, subscribers and advertisers over the past five years. With your continued support, we expect that this new schedule will be sustained for at least the next five years and beyond. Thanks again for all your support. It is very much appreciated.

The collection includes press pins representing each of the team's 39 trips to the World Series. As an added bonus to this truly unique lot, ticket stubs are included with each pin. Its Lot #1 in a Memory Lane auction that closes August 8.
Some Halper Collection Items Believed Pilfered. According to a July 14 article in the Boston Herald, several items once owned by well known collector Barry Halper are said to have been pilfered from the Boston and New York public libraries. The items were sold in a well publicized 1999 auction of Halper's collection. They were again slated for auction during Major League Baseball's All-Star festivities in St. Louis earlier this month, but were pulled from the auction after the FBI launched a probe into the status of the items. Halper, once a minority owner of the New York Yankees franchise, died in 2005. A full list of pilfered items is not available at this time.
