Thanks for your comment! It's not necessarily the easiest topic to look into and I applaud anyone willing to think seriously about it beyond the perspectives we usually encounter...

Thanks for reminding me of that glossary (it’s been a few years since I graduated…). I just looked over the whole entry there. I guess the idea is that the more 'conscious' one becomes, the more one recognizes the potential interconnectness of the cosmos. One thing that I think Jung is a bit weak on, however, is his tendency to describe the cosmos as a kind of 'God' who apparently becomes more conscious through His/Her reflective creatures. This view may be contrasted with the idea that God created the cosmos, is immanent within it, but is of an entirely different order than the creation. I tend to emphasize this latter view. But even if I’m ‘right,’ that doesn’t mean that Jung is ‘wrong.’ From my perspective he’s just a bit limited, as he himself admitted he was. And my view is limited too. I doubt that any human being could fully understand the mystery of God and creation.

synchronicity-The meaningful acausal coincidence of a psychological event and an external observable event...hmmm...sounds like Jung's definition of consciousness in the glossary of MDR- "When one reflects upon what consciousness really is,one is profoundly impressed by the extreme wonder of the fact THAT AN EVENT WHICH TAKES PLACE OUTSIDE IN THE COSMOS SIMULTANEOUSLY PRODUCES AN INTERNAL IMAGE,THAT IT TAKES PLACE,SO TO SPEAK,INSIDE AS WELL,WHICH IS TO SAY: BECOMES CONSCIOUS."

Hi.. I read a version of it translated by someone who, if I remember right, was trying to liken it to Buddhism. My feeling from reading that translation was that it didn't have the same kind of uplifting effect as the canonical Gospels. If I can find a minute I'll look over it again and elaborate.

Thanks for your comment.

I'd love to know if anyone has read the Gospel of Thomas, and what they have taken away from it.

Anyone?

Interesting post. This message board currently is not ideal as it's not set up to ID the specific article clicked from. Perhaps if you told me which paper on Jung you're referring to (there are several), I'd be in a better position to reply. Thanks.

Read the paper on Jung. Many people make the mistake of believing a person cannot be "Christian" and some other religion at the same time...such as Confucian or Stoic even. One should question why Mateo Ricci would use the works of Epictetus and not Jesus to convert the Confucians to Christianity. What Jesus taught was nothing new...it was just better and improved over anything that came before him this does not mean it is unique. Others did have the same beliefs, but due to culture they had to use words or other myths to get their point across to those who did not understand (If you still believe the bible is completely literal and not allogorical in many areas..then go ahead and stop reading.) These common "predispositions toward identical reactions" are only realized by those who are capable of "becoming conscious" vs. the "collective unconscious" in other words you "must be born again." This has nothing to do with being dunked in water or the teachings of John would have been sufficient. You need to be baptized with fire and spirit...to be enlightened. Now we get to the meat of the matter...are there steps to take that would lead to this--teachings if you will or is it by "grace of God" or both. If not the first then Jesus spent a lot of time speaking parables and telling koans if one wasn't supposed to "find heaven within themselves." So how can you find "Heaven" well St.Paul tells us that we need to look within and find the difference between the spiritual nature and the "animal" nature..Romans 9-10 (Jung's shadow if you will). He also writes that Jesus was able to make his two natures into one. Which two natures? The evil and good into the pure. The reason why Jung and all other "alchemists" are concerned with making "pure" gold. Need more? Read how Solomon gained his "wisdom" and what "wisdom" consisted of "having a discerning heart." To discern between what? Spirit and animal. God placed his nature within us after we were formed, clearly to find God we only need to "burn away" one to find the other. Paul said the teachings of Jesus have been around since the beginning of time 1st Cor, Ch.2. "The various lines of psychic development start from one common stock whose roots reach back into the most distant past."C.J. Jung as Jesus? Nah...he was only doing what the Bible told him to do. To let his light shine and to imitate Christ. Hard to do if we are stuck in the darkness and can't even determine what the light is...or keep arguing whose light is brigher. Humans are humans and we can use whatever words we like to describe the love of God, but this does not change the love itself and "explains the analogy, sometimes even identity, between the various myth motifs and symbols and the possiblity of human communication in general."C.J. "Those who are not against us, must be for us"..J.C. David

e, I just read your message now... went to evening Mass last night and was enjoying the holy aftereffects. As for your proposal, I'll e-mail you asap to discuss. I have some duties tomorrow morning that will delay me a bit. But watch for it in your inbox...

This message board is a freebie, so probably isn’t always as smooth as it could be...

e, The other day I picked up an "Oxford Dictionary of Popes" for a cut-rate price at a remaindered bookstore. It's good because the entries are chronologically arranged, not alphabetically. So basically I'm taking a voyage through the early days of Christianity. And it's amazing, all the little and not-so little disputes. Did you know, for instance, that many early Christians celebrated Easter every Sunday before the leaders finally pinned down a precise date. And that date changed (amidst great debates) before it became standardized. That's just one example. There were also debates as to the nature of Christ. And then the Gnostics, even then, were at odds with the orthodoxy (and the other way around). "Bad people" were sent to Sardinia to work and eventually die in the mines there. One escaped and returned to become Pope! Honest.

My point is that often I feel like we're similar to those guys, trying to hammer out with words what we've experienced, how we interpret and try to communicate that. I'm glad you're not the type to get hung up on it and that you don't let subtle (or apparent) differences of expression get in the way of the whole point.

You must live in one of the most beautiful climates on the face of the Earth. Just to give you an idea of what it's like here, I've been watching a piece of ice melt (with a twig frozen inside) on our driveway over the past few days. It was in a garbage can that I dumped during a spring cleanup. I also remember many years ago it snowing on April 19th. I remember the date because I was writing a letter to someone overseas and feeling appalled at the weather...

Glad you're happy and healthy, my meditating friend!
