"Barrus's "crime" is a bigger deal than Frey's. "

Well, it is kinda like asking which is worse murdering one person or robbing 1,000?

Hard to say.

I'd agree Barrus is worse here, but it makes sense Frey is more of a news story.

Of course Frey "duped" more people. But, I think we need to have a bigger ethical measure than book sales. This Nasdijj character, truly a character, a work of fiction, stole an identity, stole someone else's story, and in the process denied others a voice. We do need to insist on some level of truth and authenticity and cultural respect when we are being spied on and treated with contempt by our elected officials.

In terms of booksales, someone like Nasdijj/Barrus may not have duped a lot of people, but he did, in effect, take away sales from someone whose story is more authentic. Someone, like a Native author, who had lived and written about this experience. In this way, he is quite similar to Frey, I think.

Barrus's "crime" is a bigger deal than Frey's. He not only faked his readers, as few as they may be, he played Indian (badly) and got caught. His "crime" involves a whole other level beyond lying in a book or being a plagiarist (thief). His is a cultural theft as well, in a long line of thieves. And now that he has been exposed as a fraud, he's taking back what he offered. Like a certain kind of "-giver" we've all heard of.

Well... You can't really expect people to be more upset about a nobody author than a big famous one.
Maybe this is a bad tendency, but on one level the people here are right. I mean, Frey, by virtue of selling 5 million more books as duped 5 million more people. His crime is is a bigger deal.

Thanks for posting to that blog, nlj.

Here's a direct link to Sherman Alexie's story in Time Magazine.

While more insidious than Frey, Alexie is right; this story got less press simply because it had nothing to do with Oprah.
