Hello John Risher, Thank you for posting. Your memory is far better than mine. I was "oil king" on ship/after fireroom BT & had to report to the captain every hour with fuel inventory before reaching Manchester. I remember being afraid we would run out of fuel before docking. I saw nearly four complete crews come & go while I served between 1967-1971 on the Twining. I also remember the fog being so thick you couldn't see the sea over the side of the ship between Washington State & San francisco.
I've been trying to do some research on the Twining. There are some things that you may be able to help me with. Would you know if we ever trained with the Thomas for project SHAD(bio-weapons), training about 50 miles off the coast of San Francisco?
Also, the Twining went to the Long Beach naval ship yard for some type of repairs for around 3 months between 1969 & 1971. Would you remember what for?
One other question. Did the Twining get dispatched to south of San diego for project shad training?
Thank you for any help.
You can post here or to me at............

In response to Allen Opie, I was the CIC Officer and Navigator when we got plastered trying to go around the typoon enroute to Pearl Harbor. The first day out, we had pizza and spaghetti for lunch. After lunch, we went to GQ for a drill. Over 95% of the crew was seasick. The smell in CIC was rememberable. I also remember when we shaddowed the Russian trawler Sarychev. When we were finally called off, we made it to the Manchester fuel piers with only 14% fuel left. Then we sailed to TI with no radar, no sonar, no LORAN, and continuous cloud cover from Washing state to San Francisco. The only Twining members I have had contact with since I left for parts west in 1970 were Wally Sleeth (the supply officer) and John Dirlam (the ASW officer). I tried to find CDR Brainard a few years back, but was unsuccessful. I will always remember the Twining (and bachelor life in San Francisco). Best wishes to all.

Hi, my father, Sonarman 3rd Class Jack Estes, served on the Twining from 1944-46. He was very proud of his old 'tin can'. If any of his surviving shipmates remember him, please get in touch with me at jestes@stny.rr.com. Thank you and thanks to everyone for your service to our country.

My father, Orville A. Rundle, served on the Twining during WWII. I have his file with photos, stories, etc. I'll send a few to the twining_dd540@yahoo.com website and ask how I might post them for all to see. If anyone knew my father (passed away in 1973), I would be most grateful to hear from you. Peter_Rundle@cox.net.

It is so good to find information from other men that were on the USS Twining My dad served aboard the USS Twining from I think 1951-1955. My dad was Don Truesdell. My dad was so proud of his time spent in the military. My biggest regret is that I didn't ask him to tell me more about his time served during this era. He passed away in March 2003. I was so close to him and I think of him everyday. I loved him so much. I have some pictures of the Twining and several group pictures. You can't believe how I feel since I found this link to other men that were on the Twining. I would love to hear from any of you to just talk about your memories. Like I said, my dad was so precious to me and I miss him so much. A piece of me died the day he died. Please - whoever gets this message I would love to hear from you. I live in Greeley Colorado. My email address is depetersen@comcast.net.

To Allan Opie.
I remember the incident with the Russian Trawler. We and I think the USS Cowell were ordered out of Treasure Island to steam north to intercept and shadow a trawler suspected of being a "Spy Ship". It was winter and we hit very stormy weather and rough seas off of Washington. I used to have a picture I took of the other destroyer with waves breaking over the stack. While on station one of the snipes accidently fell from a latter in the engine room seriously injuring his spine. We had to go back to Treasure Island to get him medical attention. The other thing I remember about that trip north was that the hatch to the after crew sleeping quaters sprung a leak by waves breaking over the fan tail. It was latched down from below, but leaked all the way home. No one could repair it because it was to dangerous to go on deck. Everything in the after compartment was soaked. I was Radarman 3 from Feb 1966 to Feb 1968. I not sure which year the incident occurred in, but it did happen.

Hello Ship Mates, between 1967 and 1971, does anyone remember training for Shipboard Hazard and Defense(SHAD)? Does anyone remember training with the USS Thomas off the coast of Sanfrancisco about 50 miles west? Does anyone remember the trip to Hawaii and running into a typhoon about a 1000 miles out? I believe two were injured on that trip. I read someone remembered the early morning trip chasing the Russian spy ship home. It was north tho. Almost to Russia. We fueled at Manchester fuel station on the way back. There was another time when a trip to Acapulco was suddenly canceled.

I am searching for Anthony Pine. He was stationed at Treasure Island and working in communications. He gave my grandmother a pea whistle with his name engraved on it. He would hang out with friends at the Annex Bar where he met my grandmother. Please contact me at smcaskey@hotmail.com. We need some medical information for family members and we would love to get to know him. Thank You

Hello everyone. I served aboard the USS Twining from 1952-1956. I was a machinest mate in the forward engine room. Some of my shipmates were Bill Norrell, Johnny Inman, Gene Morris, Jack McGloughlin and I am trying to re-connect with some of my shipmates. If you are one of the guys I've listed or were on the ship during this same time, please send a note to my email address. I'd love to discuss old times and catchup on some scuttlebutt. I have just happened upon some of my old pictures of the ship and members of the crew and can provide some scanned ones to you if you are interested. My daughter monitors email for me through her email address at karend4arbonne@aol.com I hope to hear from someone from this timeframe. Wallace Davis
