It is so good to find information from other men that were on the USS Twining
My dad served aboard the USS Twining from I think 1951-1955. My dad was Don Truesdell. My dad was so proud of his time spent in the military. My biggest regret is that I didn't ask him to tell me more about his time served during this era. He passed away in March 2003. I was so close to him and I think of him everyday. I loved him so much. I have some pictures of the Twining and several group pictures. You can't believe how I feel since I found this link to other men that were on the Twining. I would love to hear from any of you to just talk about your memories. Like I said, my dad was so precious to me and I miss him so much. A piece of me died the day he died. Please - whoever gets this message I would love to hear from you.

I remember the incident with the Russian Trawler. We and I think the USS Cowell were ordered out of Treasure Island to steam north to intercept and shadow a trawler suspected of being a "Spy Ship". It was winter and we hit very stormy weather and rough seas off of Washington. I used to have a picture I took of the other destroyer with waves breaking over the stack. While on station one of the snipes accidently fell from a latter in the engine room seriously injuring his spine. We had to go back to Treasure Island to get him medical attention. The other thing I remember about that trip north was that the hatch to the after crew sleeping quaters sprung a leak by waves breaking over the fan tail. It was latched down from below, but leaked all the way home. No one could repair it because it was to dangerous to go on deck. Everything in the after compartment was soaked. I was Radarman 3 from Feb 1966 to Feb 1968. I not sure which year the incident occurred in, but it did happen.

the information about contamination with Dioxin at Treasure Island Navy Base is of serious concern. The majority of Vietnam era USN sailors sent overseas to the Far East, 7th Fleet, and Vietnam were routed via Treasure Island. A large number of those returning from Vietnam and the Far East were also outprocessed for Discharge/Seperation at Treasure Island. Many of the sailors may have attended at least the Fire Fighting School, one of the Dioxin contaminated sites at T.I.

Hello Ship Mates,
between 1967 and 1971, does anyone remember training for Shipboard Hazard and Defense(SHAD)?
Does anyone remember training with the USS Thomas off the coast of Sanfrancisco about 50 miles west?
Does anyone remember the trip to Hawaii and running into a typhoon about a 1000 miles out? I believe two were injured on that trip.
I read someone remembered the early morning trip chasing the Russian spy ship home. It was north tho. Almost to Russia. We fueled at Manchester fuel station on the way back. There was another time when a trip to Acapulco was suddenly canceled.

Some of my shipmates were Bill Norrell, Johnny Inman, Gene Morris, Jack McGloughlin and I am trying to re-connect with some of my shipmates. Hi Guys, I was one of those Sea Cadets that came on board on the 3rd weekend when it was at TI. I was there 1964-1968...ages 14 - 17 years old. I was a hospital corpsman. I received my training at Corpsman School in San Diego in 1964. The Reserve Chief HC was John Runcie who, unfortunately, passed away last December. The Dr. was John Raisbeck (an orthepedic surgeon in SF.) I was the kid that gave you all your annual shots (tetanus, typhoid, smallpox) every year. I also slept in sick bay and was woken up all night from you guys requesting APC's and other things. I'd love to be in San Diego for the reunion but no guarantees. I don't smoke now but remember the $.90 cartons of cigaretts? Also I thought the food was great. Remember those breakfasts!
