I was on the second and third Twining cruises to the Far East and Korea. On one of those cruises, we steamed through a pretty bad typhoon for four or five days. I have been trying to remember when and where we hit that typhoon. Does anyone remember?

Anyone remember Sonny Hixon (or was it Hixson, Hickson, etc?). I was aboard 10/52 through 5/54 and Sonny was a good buddy. He was from the Los Angeles area. I am looking for him. If you have any info on him or even know how his name is spelled please let me know. Thanks.

Hello,
Saw this site and wanted to share that I was on the Twining while at Treasure Island in the late 60's. Was part of the res-crew before going active duty July 69......now living in San Jose and retired from the Sheriff's Department and enjoying my 66 GTO.

My father, Raymond (Jack) Boman, Served on board as Seaman 1st Class from 1943 to 1946. Sadly he passed away on September 2004. I would like to hear from anyone who served during this time and if you may remember my father.I never once heard him talk about his experience during the war. Anything anyone may remember would be wonderful to hear, even if it is only stories about your own experiences. Thankyou, and bless you all for your service to our country and for my freedom. Please email me at a.boman@sbcglobal.net

Sorry to hear about the diabetes Ron
Pleura thickening sure can be a result of Asbestos & 30 to 40 after exposure to it is common for it to show up.
It may be a good idea to get checked out at the VA for it.
From what I understand, Diabetes is on the presumptive AO list. Since you did serve in DaNang, than you should be aware that those evaps did not filter out the dioxins, but made it far worse. The Monsoons washed it out to sea and everyone drank it in their daily coffee.
BT1 Jackson? >I remember his whole personality had
> changed, acted like he didn't know me and I know he was rough on
> his crew.
That's what I remember as well
He was on the Twining during decommissioning crew. By the time I was separated the day before the decommissioning ceremony, I wanted nothing more to do with Jackson.

Would appreciate any photos you can share as I lost most all I had after service.

I came down with diabetes about three years ago. I think a spider may have triggered that. I've also been diagnosed with pleura thickening which may or may not be as a result from asbestos exposure. As you age your pleura will thicken outside of that my health has been good. I was communicating with Postie the other day I ran across a old photo taken on the fan tail with MM2 Dizon, Jim Harper MM1 and myself and some of the other crew members. In the background is BT1 Jackson who came on board not to long before I was transfered. He was on board the YR70 in DaNang harbor as a second class and taught me how to rebuild fuel injectors and calibrate gauges. When he arrived for duty on the Twining I remember his whole personality had changed, acted like he didn't know me and I know he was rough on his crew. You may recall him.

[I made the mistake of sticking my head out of the after engine room hatch when mount 53 fired off a round right over my head]

I had that happen to me in the aft fireroom. Knocked my head around the hatch & I fell straight down to the the bottom of the ship. I have a current diagnoses of TBI, MS/bi-polar & Fibromyalgia.
I was involved in a car accident in March 1968 off base. It has left me with a multitude of spine & joint problems over the yrs. I think if I could find the three yrs of missing service records or those sick call ship records it might help me.

I remember the ship screaming & shaking to get the 35 knots, but we did it. I don't remember the feedwater problem. Sure did burn my back setting those pressure relief valves
I don't know how your health is, but Treasure Island is a highly contaminated Naval base. Dioxins, Radiation & bio-weapons. Also the Twining is on the list for asbestos contamination. I got in on some of the steamline rapping in the boiler rooms.
Were you on board the night we were called to the deck on stand by to protect the base from attacking war protesters?
I remember the base being firebombed at the gate.
.

Thanks for sharing what you can remember. I search often, but seldom see other BT's posting.
