NEXT POETRY NIGHT @ THE MERC! TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9TH FROM 6:30-8:00PM
Bring 2-3 poems you wrote or poems you LOVE, and indulge in a little poetry love....
As always, plenty of extra poems and poetry books on hand. Brought to you by JAM - Jamestown Area Artists & Musicians.
Listen, Share & ENJOY!
What We Might Be, What We Are by X. J. Kennedy
If you were a scoop of vanilla And I were the cone where you sat, If you were a slowly pitched baseball And I were the swing of a bat,
If you were a shiny new fishhook And I were a bucket of worms, If we were a pin and a pincushion, We might be on intimate terms.
If you were a plate of spaghetti And I were your piping-hot sauce, We'd not even need to write letters To put our affection across,
But you're just a piece of red ribbon In the beard of a Balinese goat And I'm a New Jersey mosquito. I guess we'll stay slightly remote.

I hope so Nancy...and wondrous of you to be the ear for those interested and to volunteer yet again! As long as we are wish-listing, if we are, I am wondering about us doing Caberet in January or February. It and Paint Your Wagon are our theatre season hopefuls decided upon last January or February? and one can never start too soon with musicals... THANK YOU KAREN A!!! YOU ARE SUCH AN INSPIRATION!
After basking in the intense feelings of being part of a great historical moment (never been a movie in Big Park before), I found myself swept away in the complete JOY of being able to see that wonderful film on a big screen again (seen it 3 times already), this time singing, laughing, and watching WITH all of my friends on the 125th birthday of our town! The whole experience was very powerful for me, so much that we hung around for about an hour AFTER the film guys left just enjoying our Big Park under the stars. I didn't want the evening to end!!!
Mike Brotherton did a STELLAR (pun intended) JOB on the Beatles music played before the movie!! The signs were also beautiful (Beth). Extra special thanks to JAM, Karen A., Mary Hubbard, and ALL of the helpers. The cake walk, sales booth, and raffle items were also great and I was really tickled by the discounted price of $1 per dog (Kael)!
It truly was a monumental occasion that seemed to be thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who attended, especially ME! I hope we can start up those movie nights we used to have (JaVayne?) and possibly do this same thing again!

To the set up crew for "Movie Night", Between set up at 5:00 and back to open up at 7:00 stop by our house for a quick bite to eat. Rick will man the grill and cook up some hot dogs, along with chips and watermellon, ice tea and lemonade (or whatever). I'm hoping we will all get a break at around 6 or so and be able to sit in the shade and have something to eat before the heat and the whatever goes to our heads. The voice of reason.

Beth, I thought of this too--remember the glow in the dark Yellow Submarine Puppet show as mood setter? Only thing is--I don't remember it being on DVD, though we certainly have the video. Any time to transform to DVD? This show was called St. Jimtown's Lonely Hearts' Club JAM, and was for a long time running the biggest fundraiser we had put on. Karen, How/when do you want to get a check. I can leave it here for you to pick up or I can mail it. I just need the details (exact amount and to whom)and an address.
Also the stamp does work. I applied a fresh coat of ink to the pad and gave it a trial stamp or two. Nonetheless a day glow stamp might be cooler.

What time is setup on Saturday? I have another obligation during the day, so might not be able to be there early enough. Could I just trade with someone and do cleanup instead? Since Dedra doesn't live in Jimtown, maybe it would work better for her to do setup if cleanup is next day. Let me know what works.
I'll plan on 6:00 Monday, the 4th.

Kael-- In addition, we need Rope to cordon off the area, duct tape, a clip board, pens, a jar for the raffle and maybe another cash box since I think the concessions/t-shirts might be better traffic-wise, if they were near the cake-walk (ideas?). I will bring paper and a sharpie in case we need to make extra small signs for "trash" v. "recycle" etc. We'll also need to bring a few tables & chairs down, but we know those are there.
Are you SURE that stamp pad works? If not, I'm happy to pick up something in day glow...

Dear Jammies, If you want me to come to the pavilion meeting, let me know. Or just call if you have any questions about pavilion, park, etc. On another but similar note, one thing I've heard from several people is the idea of shaded benches...and, I got to thinking about our current pavilion. What if we left the roof and supports and removed only the plywood flooring? That would leave a nifty shade spot for folks who aren't walkers but want to enjoy the park. Also it could still be used for concessions. The path can go just to the left of it before it heads on. You might take a look at it from this point of view next time you walk down there!

Kael-- Re the meeting about the pavillion--I teach my last class that night Aug 5th, so the time doesn't work for me. Can we meet Monday Night Aug 3rd or Sunday Aug 4th after we clean the park?
The rest of the week is CRAZY busy for me and then I leave for vacation on the 11th.

I have received a request for consideration from JAM for an In Kind cash donation to help get the new pavillion in the big park wired for electricity. The total cost for Xcel to install a transformer, run lines and install a meter is $4500.00. We are not being asked for the entire amount. The pavillion does seem to be a JAMish project. I feel that a meeting of the board members is necessary before any decisions can be made. It is a somewhat time sensitive issue and the sooner we could meet the better. I will be out of town until Monday 7/28. With movie night on the horizon it may be difficult to get everyone together but I think we should try to meet in the next week or two. Would some evening in the first week of August work?? How about Tuesday, Aug 5th at 7 in the town hall????
Let me know your availability and I will get on it. If that day does not work please suggest an alternative.

Kael-- Do we need coolers with ice to keep the soda cold?
Also, I need a boom box and some music for the cake walk--anyone got one that will work and ideas for good cake walk music?
Still need more raffle donations--looks like my grand prize just fell through, so will try to hit up the Boulderado or someone. Please you talented JAMmers, donate a lesson (as Paul Murin has) or offer one of your services (as Dee Gutske and Kara Baumgart have). THANKS!

Karen, I found out that Costco sells small bags of CJ. I asked a friend to pick up a box of them for me this week.
Nancy offered to donate some bags of micro wave popcorn. I think we could pre-pop and sell bags that way. We may need a few more but I can take care of that. If we go this route we will have CJ, popcorn, candy, water and soda. Should be good since most people will probaby be packing coolers, etc.

we can get "3-oz boxes (24 per order) on Amazon with free shipping for 28.30. We could sell them for $2/box. And order how much? If we go this way, we should order today or tomorrow. There are also candy sellers on the web who sell CJ we can check.

Also, we need volunteers to help sell T-shirts and mugs, take tickets at the gate and set up and clean up. I have two small crews for set up and clean up, but more are welcome. Set up at 5pm. Clean up 10 am the next day.

Good Morning JAMmers, Just wanted to let everyone know the next Poetry Night @ the Merc will be Monday, September 8th, instead of an August date as planned. In the mean time, here's one from Ted Hughes:
Thistles by Ted Hughes
Against the rubber tongues of cows and the hoeing hands of men Thistles spike the summer air And crackle open under a blue-black pressure.
Every one a revengeful burst Of resurrection, a grasped fistful Of splintered weapons and Icelandic frost thrust up
From the underground stain of a decayed Viking. They are like pale hair and the gutterals of dialects. Every one manages a plume of blood.
Then they grow grey like men. Mown down, it is a feud. Their sons appear Stiff with weapons, fighting back over the same ground.

Hi Pavilion Committee, I'm very interested in how the pavilion design looks and how much it costs! I'm hearing rumors of $40,000! Let me know soon so we can start the number crunching. I hope that rumor includes labor costs. As soon as we finalize it, I have to apply for a building permit. "Seating" might include a stacked flagstone wall that doubles for bench(s) and landscaping?? Just a thought... Another random thought: on the back of the backboard which will be at one end of the tennis court, would anyone be interested in hanging a wall mural? And also in the future, depending on when EPA approves our preliminary plans for Phase 1, we'll need to remove the pavilion. Perhaps we could stay in touch regarding a group to do that. PS Elizabeth, and Mary Ellen: I think Mary Ellen meant that the Aug Town Board meeting will be August 4 (not August 8)...xxoo

Hi all, Just catching up on reading the posts. I was thinking about the idea of having an open back for the pavilion, but remembering D.J.'s admonition that the roof should be canted only one direction, which would need to be outwards toward the park for large functions, right? Would it be possible to have a roof that pivots and locks, so that it could direct the sound either out front or to the back towards the hillside? Or could we have some covered seating out front? Just some ideas, but isn't that what brainstorming is?
Karen, would a batch of my grandma's brownies work? (Not much on cakes, myself.)If so, sign me up! Oh, and they won't actually be my grandma's brownies, because those would be awfully stale! I'll make 'em from her recipe ;-)

Dear Laura-- Wow! MUY, MUY for your kind words, which mean a lot, and THANK YOU for volunteering to make a cake.
In a CAKE WALK, participants walk around a circle on numbered pieces of paper to music, and when the music stops, they find the nearest number and stand on it. Then ONE of those numbers is pulled out of a hat. If there is a person standing on the number---she wins a cake. If not, everyone antes up again and we go again. It's $1 a try, we'll have 24 or so numbers on the floor, so the potential to raise money is, well, HUGE. I'm trying to get at least 12 cakes to "Walk" off.
Thanks again for helping. Karen A

Jammies,
I just caught the tail end of the JAM meeting, and have the same conflict (a rehearsal) that Bud & Anne do tonight. I know we are all under work crunches too, so posting beforehand probably won't be possible. Michael Brotherton was at the meeting, and may have the best handle on the details. DJ too?
Someone (Tom Williams? Bill Brotherton?) had an idea I liked: if the pavilion had an open back and were moved out away from the hillside a little bit, a more intimate venue would be created for a coffehouse-type performer or small group, with people able to sit on the hillside in the shade. Don't know where the property line runs on Cleg's house, but that would provide a nice flexibility.

That's what I was afraid of---! Anne, DJ and JeVayne seem to have the best idea of how things could work well. Maybe if they can't go to the meeting, you can call them or they can post on the QT?
What I recall is this: We want the park soil level to be HIGHER under the pavillion (by about a foot). The pavillion footer should be slightly larger than what it is (not sure of dimensions). The roof should be "single-canted" and taller for sound. Anne mentioned storage, and possible power sources. The structure would be mulit-use.
What else--anyone?

We can't be at the pavillion meeting tonight, tho we've brought our ideas to JAM & Tom about building a very quality, simple yet smart structure (storage, roominess,sound,versatility...and of course it must be beauty-ful!)--Something that will serve the future well--soundly built, thoughtfully designed....etc.
But would someone bring up the power issue at the meeting? We gotta have POWER baby, to do it right.

Hi All--I'm in the throes of moving into my studio, which will save me hundreds of dollars a month, by August 1. Sorry to be so out of touch. We have been a member of BCAA in the past, especially when they were AHAB (Arts and Humanities Assembly of Boulder) from whom we received our first grant and several thereafter. We have a wonderful track record with them and I have served on several of their governing boards...Karen, thanks for revisiting their services. I believe Emma Hardy recently benefitted from an idividual artist's grant--she would have had to become an individual member to apply. I will be writing grants to them once again when I determine if JAM's actual needs and desires are not being met at our grass roots levels. Please do consult me personally with any ideas, and we will discuss them at the group level. I'm JAM's faithful grant writer, as many of you know! I have drafted many concepts for a website, having worked with Amy to get us linked, if minimally, to the Jamestown site. Thanks Amy! If anyone would like to work with me for our future, unique website, please let me know! July 4th was a BLAST! Special thanks to JVFD/EMS for the most spectactularrrr fireworks EVER! It was also nice to see the presence of Left Hand Fire Dept. and I commend both departments for bridging a long-standing gap to work together and protect the our shared mountain!
Furthermore, I would like to thank ALL of the musicians who provided excellent music for the day, including the Kevin Dooley Trio, the entire Farmer family (Nolan, Sara, Katie, Nancy), Warren Hixson, Porphry Mountain, Swamp Koolers, Ed Gage & Friends, Bill Brotherton & Friends, Crash of the Dischords, Biscuit & Gravy, Jared Menard, Ronnie Tori, Gold Hill, and DJ Chad Zygoat, as well as the sound people who WORKED very hard that day, including Nolan Farmer, Drew McGrael, Richard Jenkins, Glenn Short, Bill Brotherton, Brent Delventhal, Tommy Williams, and Brian from Gold Hill. Special thanks to JAM for allowing use of its sound equipment for the event. Thank you also to every person who helped with set up and clean up!
Finally, the music in Big Park would not have been possible at all without POWER from Cleg's home, for which we are eternally grateful. Thank you to Judy for accommodating our needs that day and for enduring loud music into the late hours!
'Til next year...ROCK ON!

Dear Tom W., Glad to hear you're still interested and involved I look forward to seeing the plans when you get back. We ended up creating a preliminary design for the park with the folks who attended the June 24th meeting and Ken submitted that to Walsh Engineers (they are overseeing the soil cap project). I think we will want to get a date to present (and get feedback on) the preliminary design for the park, and perhaps the pavilion as well, but we don't have a date yet. Maybe we could do that as soon as the plan for the pavilion is ready (it would have to be before mid-August). We will need the specifics and cost for the pavilion when I write the GOCO grant which is due in the fall - I don't know exact date. (Kent Weeks also expressed an interest in being involved in the pavilion design.) By the way, if you or anyone has any questions about this project, please call me or Amy or Ken to discuss how questions or concerns can be answered. Have a good vacation wherever you are!

Hi Wendy
I was kind of in charge of that idea, and would be glad to take it on again. Joe R. had drawn a rough idea of the design which I have at my house, and I have since thought of a couple of variations on the theme that will both save cost on materials, and make it more suited to the town and the spirit of the original pavillion. I can make it to the next meeting held about this when we get back, and I'll collaborate with a couple of very talented design folks in town for furthering the ideas. We'll be back Thursday.

Hi all - The park soil cap project is definitely moving forward in the prep and planning stage. In the very near future there will be some community meetings to go over the details.First one is to go over the logistics of the soil cap (see Amy's note on the QT). Then, we'll be inviting the community participation to talk about what will be included in the GOCO grant and where it might be positioned in the park. Part of what is needed is to reactivate the committee that was working on the pavilion design. It would be helpful to get the dimensions of the design (the footprint) to the soil group in order to know where we do NOTneed to put soil. The plans ideally would be drawn up before the end of the year. Is there anyone around who was working on that from JAM? I remember that Joe R, Mark M and Tom W were involved but Joe said he didn't have the plans and didn't know where they were. Mary Ellen didn't have them either; Tom is out of town for a couple of weeks. If anyone knows anything about this, will you call me? 303-449-7145. If there are no members from last summer who would be interested, are there any new members interested in helping to take this on? It could be included in the large GOCO grant that I'm going to help put together with Amy Gage. Thanks mucho. Wendy
