happy all---- got my video finally on a disk as a mpg and, a copy, as a quick time. But alas, upon inserting the disk into my MAC I still can not access the clips. Ugh. What format is importable?

Hi Faye! Merry and Happy:) Have a couple of questions: (1) am making a video which is pretty long. Is there a length requirement before a Movie Maker project begins to get funky? And, (2) How do I delete the clips in Compositions when I'm done with them? I delete them but they're still listed there.

Faye, Hope you're feeling better. The video I'm making is currently about 6 min.s but destined to be longer. I'm cutting and piecing it together from a classroom project which involved ALL of my classes (approx. 45 min. total) and hope the final product to be about 12min. Where do I find how much memory I've used in Movie Maker? Also, would it be simpler/easier in the long run if I cut it into smaller tracks? It won't have the same continuity but I guess it could be done:( This is not a web-based project but something I want to put on a disk for the kids. Does it make a difference?

Evelyn: I would really consider something other than Movie Maker and create a DVD in the end. Check with Greg on Pinnacle Studio because Movie Maker will crap out very soon for you!!! 12 minutes really will tax it. I would say get on a Mac to use iDVD-Final Cut, but I know that isn't supported in Southampton.

My new Mac Dreamweaver opens only my AW folder but Bruce does not open. Got ideas? My new video camera has yet to be recognized even with firewire. I'll call Canon.
I did finally, after 4 months to get my Gladiator clip to open in imovie!!!!! It must have been a memory issue. It worked fantastically on the new Powerbook. can a five minute video be burned to a CD? I also got a wonderful Canon slr digital camera that works like a charm. SLR! OH BABY. Compared to the Nikon, which I researched endlessly, I made the choice and I am happy with it.

Bruce: Site > Manage Site and create a new BL definition. There is a switch on the Canon camera that needs to be flipped for the firewire to be recognized - it can't be on "camera", probably VCR.

worked ! now I'll do the video camera!

can't get the computer to recognize /see the canon. I bought the special firewire followed the manuel? Did not download the software. I do not think I have to?

Bruce: open iMovie. Have the camera connected as per manual. Does iMovie capture or recognize?

 New trouble and a bbig one. My powerpoint multi media presentation with video, sound, audio music bells whistles, movies, car chases, love triangles and more....the sound just up and stoped working???????????? HELP. big time help

Faye- Where I stand now- Powerpoint has no sound. Apple says it is a Microsoft issue. Microsoft says it is an apple thing.... And it took five hours on the phone to find this out.

Love you answer! That's normal. Did you make sure all the sounds are in the same folder as the PowerPoint Presentation? Reinsert them and see what happens?

tried that. Cana't even do it on a new one. I tried it with apple and with Microsoft. Microsoft has bumped me to the next level of support and will be calling within the next two days. New problem. Somehow in the process I lost my BL folder. It is there but dreamweaver can't find it. When I "manage site" it gives me a choice. Ftp or site and then it will noit let me create BL....I'm lost

Just relink your folder in "manage site" which is on the first screen. Click the blue folder and browse.

I go to manage site. I see bl and click "done." I tried new and dupa nd all sorts of things. Done closes it but I can not access the remote files. Link to what , where? There is a spot under " advanced, ""local info,"asking for hhtp:. But what would it be? Thew massage says," can not view remote files since something does not exist..."

Go to FTP and make sure all of those are set correctly. This is how it connects to the remote. Just work locally until the 25th and I'll look at it.

Is it possible to make a flash image "smaller" without having to make each tiny piece smaller?
I am thinking of the "Book Conversations" header (see http://eev3.liu.edu/ee0406/nstar/bookconversations/index.htm) I would like to use a smaller version of that header as a "button" that someone would click on from a previous index type page (see http://eev3.liu.edu/ee0406/nstar/conversationindex.htm) For now, I put an old one that I made in Fireworks.

I am working on the Flash coloring book tutorial and I was doing really well until I got to step 9 which said "holding down the shift key select all the lines (no fills)". I am lost as to what tool I should be using here (the Selection tool)? Let me know or I will get you help in class on Wednesday. Thanks.

Meg, I was able to select each line by using the "select tool". There are a lot of little parts to some of the lines, but it should work.
I got lost in step 10 when I had to click on frame 1 of layer 2 and Edit>Paste in Place. The Paste in Place option was not available to highlight. Up to that point was fine. Thanks for any thoughts.

glad i found you guys. i was posting messages to the old tech. qt. any way i dropped my laptop and the door for the cd burner broke off. is there some where i can take it or do i have to call dell? also i am still having trouble with popups! my ability to work online is slowed to a snails pace. i have the googletool bar is there anything else i can do?
i am working on the flash tutorial as well and i got thru step ten but my grass line is showing through the ambulance and i'm not sure if it's supposed to. i don't want to go on to the next section and have to redo what i've done if it's not. so i'll wait to hear from you faye.

Coloring book group: I know selecting the lines is not that easy. Make sure you zoom in so you can see the whole picture. Nancy, no idea why - will look Wednesday. Jeannine: call Dell or take your computer to a technician. It needs help! The line shows through because you need to fill in the +.

My home computer is doing something similar to Jeannine's. We found 177 critical objects that needed to be removed, but the pop-ups were interfereing so much eventually the adaware program froze, with out us being able to get rid of the objects. I am probably going to bring ours to Computer Professionals in Wainscott. I am trying what I know and making some progress, but I don't think it will be enough to save it. Should I go into my control panel to remove anything? Any other suggestions?

Winfixer is driving me insane..popping up for the last two months..what can we do to rid the world of this nemesis?

hi everyone.
i have been having a lot of trouble with my computer over the last few months due to a virus . i keep getting pop-ups asking me to download a program called winfixer. the longer i ignored the pop-ups the worse it got and the less i was able to use my computer. i was pretty much paralyzed. we tried running all my anti virus software and downloading spybot and running that too. nothing worked.
i took the day off work on Tuesday and got on the phone with dell at eight in the morning i had to buy a 100.00 anti virus service package. they took me through the process of ridding my computer of this virus which they called "insidious". i spent six hours with them. i had to do my desktop and laptop. my desktop had 42,300 infected files. the guy i was on with said he'd never seen anything worse. we did things like delete the cookies and all temporary files, go to add and remove programs and get rid of limewire and AIM (which are file sharing programs that will bring infected files into your computer), we also got rid of winfixer and wintools programs and something called weatherbug. lastly they used a program called hijackthis which will alert you to programs that are causing the problem. i was told that the virus probably started on my desktop and came through my wireless router infecting my laptop.
my computer seems to be working normally but i logged onto to the internet in class and the first screen that came up was a winfixer pop up. it seems that once this virus finds its way your computer it remembers the path and tries to re-attack your computer no matter what.
i just keep deleting my cookies and running my avg and spyware so it can't move in and take over.

 I am working on the Flash Coloring Book activity. I am stuck at step 19 where I am suppose to be working in the Effects panel. Where is that panel because I can't find it? I am not sure if it is a seperate panel or if it is part of the Properties panel. Thanks for your help.

It is on the Properties panel - on the right side. Color - Tint - Alpha are all part of that area.

Okay- I found the place where I can tint the colorswatch. Thanks for helping me with that. Now I have a new problem:
I am having a hard time getting the black outline to appear once I tint the first circle white. I went into the colorswatch symbol and selected the outline and made it a graphic symbol. However, where do I drag it over the other circles? In scene 1 or in the colorswatch symbol scene? I tried both places but the circles disappear when I move one on top of the next. I know this is probably confusing so if you can help me great, but if not I will come early on Wednesday. Thanks.

That's a glitch in the instructions. Just put the first colorswatches in and forget that you will have a black outline. It does look funny for white, but I'll help you on that on. Duplicate the colorswatch symbol -- name it colorOutline. Edit the duplicate symbol so it has no fill, but just the black outline. Then drag that outline on the stage over the colorswach symbol and you will have the black outline that is not affected by the change in tint.

Faye- I tried what you wrote but I am still having trouble. I will continue to work on it, but if I still can't get it I will just come to class around four. Hope that is okay with you. Thanks for all your help with this project!!

Dr. Byrne had a good suggestion to one of my questions last night. With all the spyware and viruses, we are all being affected (Windows users only). Run your spybot and virus software with your computer not online. Last night after class I ran my laptop at home without the wireless router plugged in and not hardwired to the Ethernet cable. No spybots, but two viruses were found. AVG took almost an hour to run so don't expect to do anything on the computer. Set it up and walk away.

Faye is there any problem with installing the Macromedia Shockwave Player missing plugin for my computer? I just got a message to and went ahead and did it. Now I realize I probably should have checked with you first.

Macromedia Shockwave Player plugin is for Shockwave movies or games on the Internet. Both Donna and I would go nuts if we could play the daily jigsaw puzzle at Shockwave.com if we didn't have the shockwave player plugin.

Faye, remember the demonstration you did with the scrolling nature pictures? I'd like to try to do something similar with other photos. Could you send me a copy so I could try to figure out how to go about it?

How do I write exponents in Dreamweaver. In word, I would format my text as superscript but I can't find that option in Dreamweaver. Any ideas

You have that same option in HTML - just look under Insert > HTML > Text Object or Special Character.

Faye, I'm working on the Flash tutorial for the coloring book. I'm at step 18, where I have to drag from the library the other colorswatches. I see a section called behaviors where I see my fisrt colorswatch, but no "Library". I don't seem to be able to drag anything from the behavior colorswatch. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Many special characters are available but exponents are not one of them. Any other suggestions

Library is Command-L - It is also under Window.

Coloring book solution: if you use white as one of your colors, you don't have to "Tint" it. My techie has told me this one.

Faye, FYI- I finally spent some time trying to convert my iTunes onto my MP3 player. I tried to burn them to disk and convert it and also checked out some trial runs on JHymn and Xilisoft software. According to JHymn (the software mentioned in the Tourbus article you sent around back in December), the iTunes 6.0 has made it so the softwares are, as yet, unable to convert the Mp4's to Mp3 format. Does anyone have any ideas where I can get some FREE music off the internet that is either in Mp3 or WMA format? I feel so gyped that I bought the music but can't load it onto my MP3.

Ha, I was able to format the font in word and copy and paste it into dreaweaver and it worked. Yes, no learning html today!!!

Someone please answer Evelyn since I don't own or use MP3's. Still living with radio or stacking CDs.

I had the same type of issues last semester when I was looking for audio to put with my slide show. I wanted to edit the audio that I purchased from itunes in audacity but couldn't because it was all mp4's and audacity only worked with mp'3s. Sean had some ideas but I didn't want to mess with downloading music from those types of sites because of virus issues. Check with Sean. He had some ideas.

I just answered your question on the Imagine Quicktopic but thought I would post my response here too. In Flash, to get to the library you to to the top where it says Window. Click Library there and it will appear to the left side of the Flash page.

No, don't use the color mixer to fill the colorswatch on the stage. You want to use Tint in the Properties panel.

Faye, when the outline disappears do I open the colorswatch symbol from the library, or some other place?? Thanks again!

Faye, I hate code...I did get some of the site changed, but I am having a hard time with picture editing! The only solution I could come up with is changing the actual picture, (saving another picture in place of the one that existed) in order to keep the link in order. Any other short term solutions until I can redo the pages?

Faye and I inserted a new layer (Layer 4) and then pasted (from the Library) the colorOutline. I don't think this step was in the original directions but I can show you my directions (which I changed after working with Faye) in school tomorrow if you want to stop by my classroom. Just an FYI to everyone-
 I had an issue with my home computer that when I ran Ad-aware it would find 2 registered objects. No matter how many times I tried to remove them through Ad-aware they would just appear again the next time I ran the program.
 Faye just had me run Spybot and then Ad-aware and when I did that the objects were removed. I just wanted to put this out there in case anyone else is having trouble with their computer. Always run Spybot first then Ad-aware. I guess the other lesson is be sure to run your virus and spyware checkers!

I made a flash movie and I want to change the stage color from white to a color. Can you tell me how.

Click off anything selected in your native Flash file (fla). Look at the Properties Panel. Do you see "Background" with a color box to the right?

I have just filled my camera's flash card. Am I able to save them to a CD by doing so on my computer, or do I need to do that at CVS or a website like shutterfly?

I do it via my computer on a CD. CVS or a website sometimes uses proprietary software like Kodak's (ask Meg) that will be more annoying than words can say here.

Don't use CVS to make a CD of your pictures. They put the pictures on a Kodak CD that is a nightmare when you want to modify your pictures. You can easily put your pictures on a CD-R disk if you have one. I will show you how tomorrow at school if you stop by. Otherwise I will show you in class on Thurday.

Nancy- if you have not got it figured yet. Just do everything you want to the photios save them in a separate folder. Each saved as... titled and label and as JPEGS./ Keep your orginals in a different folder it.......should be a piece of cake as should burning the CD?
save at 5x7 300dpi or 150 dpi.

here is the skinny- I redid a powerpoint or two, for my Assetttttttttt
presentation. Since I switched over to my new computer and went legit, with store bought software, I have had to paddle through acres of issues. Life could be worse.

I re downloaded , re converted , re built and re "put", two quicktime movies. Cleaned up and animated out the wazoo. 2AM . That is 2 IN THE MORNING!
I put sounds, bells, whistles and a few kitchen sinks. Yes more then one! Then it happened! I downloaded a few cool perfect tunes, converted the mp3 to Aiff, in Audsity, and tried to stategically place them in the presentation. Program wide I lost all sound!
My computer has sound. But all of my presentations have none. ( the quicktime works) Yhis happened before and microsoft wasted gallons of time. I finally reinstalled my whole system. I would rather not lose everthing again. Help.

Delete the newest sounds that you just put in. Does it work then? Rebuild it in the respect by taking out all the sounds and replacing them one by one until you recreate "no sound". It may be a corrupt sound file.

I'm way ahead of you. So far it did not work but...I will double check. I might ditch every thing and then will need your help re doing my site managing AGAIN!

This morning I dump the office and reinstalled. No luck. I dumped Audasity ( will never use it again) no luck. For now on a will burn a cd and then convert from that.

Faye if this hell decends on anyone else...This is what I did: navigate to the Hard Drive: Applications: Utilities: and open the Audio MIDI Setup. In here, for Audio Output in the lower right hand corner what is the format set to? If it is not set to 44100.0 Hz you should be able to select it in the drop down menu. If this requires changing, try to close and reopen the Audio MIDI Setup to ensure that the change has not been reset. Once it is set to 44100.0 try Microsoft PowerPoint and restart the machine and test PowerPoint again to see if this resolves the issue.*Stiil There is something I need to know so this does not occur again! To place music into the presentation what is the best way to convert MP3 to a usable format? I aint going through Audasity agian.
What is the BEST format to use? If I am to buy music in a format that I need where and who has it. Not itunes. love to all B

The cheapest (FREE) is Audacity but make sure you get the LAME plug-in installed. That allows the MP3's. This applies to everyone - PC and Mac. You need to spend a little time with it and it works wonderfully! Just used it with several tracks and editing two different sounds together. It is called TIME which is what is needed for audio and video. That's why movies take so long to make.

I find that PowerPoint is for presentation without heavy audio. Usually one talks/lectures using PowerPoint and audio is distracting. Okay, that may be a "business-world" mentality, but it can be distracting when one is lecturing in class, too. I have no idea what format - look at the help file - it is listed there.

Where do I use sound? Flash. The sound is edited in Audacity, though, to be the correct length for the presentation. Do I know what speed? No, google it. I'm sure somewhere it gives a quick break down. I have done, but don't get lost in searching. Pick the right keywords. question: i am going to draw a simple fish picture for our underwater flash coloring book. is it ok to draw it by hand and scan it into the computer then email it to meg and nancy? will that effect the quality of the image? would you reccommend doing it that way or another?

actually, i think that was three questions. ..but who's counting.

Jeannine: Draw the fish by hand. The scan doesn't break apart as easily and the quality will not be "coloring book" quality with solid black lines and coloring areas.

PowerPoint's don't get email! There is a way to get them as stand-alones - Save As PowerPoint Package. Then you can email it, but it will be READ ONLY.

I have been "listening in" and from your last message it sounds like Jeannine has to draw the fish with the tools in Flash, correct? If she draws the fish on computer paper and scans it in the coloring book won't work, right? Am I following correctly?

You can. Just remember you need the "lines" and the fills. Sometimes that is not easily rendered in Flash. Computer art students are Suffolk just draw in Illustrator or Photoshop so one has a layer for the lines and one layer for the fills. Takes a little working, but it can be done.

i am talking about using a black ink pen and paper just like i did for the coloring book pages in the picasso site. that's ok right? or am i misunderstanding something here?

That works fine if you are just posting the pages for one to print and color away from the computer.

Now I did it. I can't put. I emailed Doctor B regarding the eev2 issue that we encountered. All the work we are doing is not getting up . But I think that was solved on one level but now Dreamweaver keeps coming up FTP error...Internal Dreamweaver error has occured.

Faye, we want to have the kids be able to color these pictures on-line like we did with the ambulance. What method is best for that?

Bruce: did you put the folder called "Pages"? That's were the thumbnails are located. Hopefully the FTP error will be corrected. If not, keep everything locally and we'll look at it Wednesday.

Meg: It comes back to the same thing - You have to be able to break out the "coloring" area from the outline. However you do it, that is what has to be done. It does take time and work to accomplish it as you know from doing the sample coloring book.

Your PowerPoint is probably rather large to email. ZipIt or StuffIt after you package it in PowerPoint.

1-Our site/pages load slowly. Is that because the images are too big? Then how big should it be

zip it and stuff it free downloads?

Images should be 72 or 94 dpi for the web. Width: no wider than 800 pixels due to how slow it gets if they are bigger.

ZipIt (PC) and StuffIt (Mac) are semi-free. ZipIt claim educational and there is a free stuffIt version that doesn't have all the bells and whistles.

I was just playing with a new splash page. I was trying this based on our lesson from Wed. night. I have the first step with the photo on the stage, and the second step typing in the title , but I am forgetting what to do when I want the text to scroll down.

I usually put the text where I want it to end first. Then x amount a frames on the same layer insert a keyframe. Return to the first keyframe and most the text where you want it to enter from. After than, insert a motion tween for the animation to happen.

Faye, my home computer is not connecting to the internet. I found a message that is telling me I need to renew the IP address. Any clues as to why that might be, or what to do?

Email questions- How do you send text, a link and an image of a designed page. In word I inserted a picture amongsst the text but the pic is not seen when I email it. I will email you an example since I can not explain it very well.
But I have tried saving in word as a web page. Saving it in photoshop (for the web) This method of converting a word doc to a jpg worked but the link was dead not that it was transformed.

Don't do the photoshop thing!!! The Word doc should work, but how did you insert the picture? Insert from File? Did you try making a PDF?

I have been working on my splash page. I tried to move the banner on the bottom of the picture so that you could see more of the flower. I exported the new movie from Flash to Dreamweaver, put it on my index page, and put the page up, but the old movie still appears. Any ideas?

On the remote, delete the swf along with the old index and then put the new ones. Every once and while this happens. This is my usual solution. Also view it on a computer you haven't used in the last two days or just another computer. It is in your cache so the old one will probably appear until the browser figures out that you have changed the page.

I got a new canon printer I am going nuts. When I print the text comes out tiny. The print preview shows it as perfect. It says it is 100%.
I know you don't know every printer but maybe you got an idea before I take a baseball bat to it.

Check "File-Page Setup" and make sure it is 100%. How does a photo appear?

yes did it. sghows 100% all looks great . I will check the photo situation.

I have had a number of files that have come up as "at risk" on my home computer when I ran the scans. I will bring the list of them tonight to show you to see if you can help.

I tried to delete the file C:\WINDOWS\SchedLgU.Txt but when I did I got an error message that the program was in use. Nothing else was running on the computer so I am not sure why I got that message. Any suggestions...I have been spending hours working on cleaning up my home computer. Thanks.

Meg: have you done your windows updates? Using Internet Explorer, go to Tools and Windows Updates. You can also download/install Windows Defender from Microsoft and see if that takes care of the "at risk."

Jeannine: Disable Popups in your browser, get Ad Aware Free, download and run Windows Defender. That's three things.

I believe there is a free version out there. Go to www.downloads.com and look for Adaware there. I have Adaware SE Personal. Hope that helps and is what Faye was talking about too.

I am working on the Flash Quiz and I was able to draw the rectangle on the stage but I am not sure how to round the edges. I am also not sure how to use the guides that you mention. You might have to show me that in class but if you can tell me how to round the edges to the rectangle that would be great. Thanks.

Double-click the rectangle tool before you draw with it. You will get a dialog box to change the corners' radius. Guides are achieved by View-Ruler and click-drag from the ruler your guides.

I was able to get the rounded edges of my rectangle. I am still not sure about guides, even with your last note, so I will have you show me how to use them in class on Wednesday if at all possible. (I will try to come early.)

Now I am in the Labels layer section of the tutorial and I don't know what you mean when you say to add frame labels. Thanks for all your help.

Frame Label: highlight the frame. Look on the Properties Panel's left corner. There is an area to type in to name the frame.

What is the best, most sure fire way to send an image and text via email that all or most people can open without destroying the design of the page. I tried sending it as a pdf, jpg..... I will send you two as a test.

That works as long as you have installed PDF Writer which Macs automatically have.

I am making a music cd. Cover. I was told that I can not use photoshop text.
It has toi be vector instead of pixels. A gap in my education. Does that mean convert to bitmap? What if I rasterize. What if I do the work in image ready? Suggestions?

Vector is using Adobe Illustrator. Fireworks would work, too, since the text would be vector if you convert to path/outline. Not totally sure Image Ready wouldn't change it to Photoshop text. When vector is needed, I use Illustrator.

I am working on the Flash MC Quiz tutorial and I up to the Question 1 Layer. I made the start button but when I selected it I was told that "no actions could be applied to the selection." Do I have to make the button a symbol first and then add the action script? When I tried to convert it to a symbol I lost the words "START" on the button. Is that suppose to happen? Please let me know because I am stuck. Thanks.

Make sure the text box for the word "start" is a static text box. Yes, make it a button symbol first and then add the action script.

I am not sure what you mean by a "static text box". On frame 2 of the Question 2 layer, there is a light blue box around the start button and the words "Are you ready to start?" Is that what you mean? Let me know or I will come to class early Wed. to get help with it. I went on a bit with the tutorial but I have it all saved as different files so if I have to change anything I should be able to do that.

Look at the Properties panel. When you text box is selected, it will be either static or dynamic. Not to panic you, but I am not sure when I will arrive on Wednesday. I have a meeting starting at 1:30, but it is a typical meeting that will last until 4-4:30!!! I'll find you as soon as I arrive. I have also emailed Donna to check with you on the early shift tech time.

Faye, I'm trying to insert an audio file into my developmental portfoio. I don't want to make a Movie Maker video out of it but rather just link the audio my Dreamweaver page. How do I do that?

Your wireless router has a ip number that you use the browser the access. In its software you can set the security so only your MAC address laptop can access the router. If the router didn't come with a physical manual, there usually is a pdf or some kind of file on the installation CD that will give you all the instructions.

Dreamweaver keeps crashing/quitting on me. Word and Firefox are the only open programs.

Go to your Library in both the Macintosh HD and the User and delete the Preferences > Dreamweaver. Then restart and see what happens.

The answer is: Title tag to the hyperlink. In the properties panel there is a Quick Tag link which pops up a scrolling list. Select the "a" and "title" it.

What options do I have when trying to save ppt's to IDVD.I want to make a dvd of all powerpoints, movies and images relating to a specific art topic, using IDVD. Going well with movies and images but the ppt so far has to be saved in an version that will not allow editing- Quicktime.

Don't know...Let me do some research.

while on the subject. If the ppt has embedded movies (imovies) converting it to a pdf loses the movie and animation? Will converting to a quicktime loses the movie? What is the best way to mount a ppt on the web?

all the powerpoints, images and movies are slowing my world down.... I need an exterior harddrive. How, what where do I find such an item.? Is it the same as a key?

I have a G3 with no usb ports but can I use it some how, in some way, as an external harddrive?

At this time on the G3 you may need to look at ebay or used market. Does it have a SCSI port? I am sure it doesn't have a CD burner built in, right? I know we have kept one G3 with SCSI because of one scanner and a Zip drive for "external" storage.

I tyhink it does have a cd burner and definite scsi but I just / need an external hard drive. can I hook it to my Ibooks/Imac in anyway?

You would have to "network" them through Ethernet. Search MacWorld or MacAddict for the answer on this. Or if you still have the manual - yeah, right!

Huh? You are getting a message and it doesn't open? Try downloading and then Text Edit, but I am not sure that will do it.
