Two 'online tragedies' affected me most in 2005. One was Corey Rudl dying in a car accident and the other was Marcus Allen doing a runner.

I am one of the people that didn't open your emails daily. Every once in awhile I would go through all of them. I am brain-injured and it's taken me a long time to get information "in" and working in my life. I've always considered your email of highest quality and extremely trustworthy and looked forward to your website and information as I grew in my abilities. I went in today to find out which program you recommended for adware. I am so sorry to see you go but I understand totally (and humbly). Thank you for being the type of man you are - utmost quality and honesty. Thank you for being someone I could absolutely respect without question.

You are doing the right thing Markus, perfectly and morally correct. I've been in business myself and my main mistake is treating it like a charity, giving away more than I can give. I was thinking the goodwill finally win, but what I got after all those years is emotionally bankrupt and financially ruined. It's nothing wrong helping people, but you must help yourself first. I've been banging my head on the wall for 33 years before I finally got it. So you guys out there, learn the lesson! Hey Markus -- I'm sorry to see you so frustrated with your newsletter. If you're not getting either happiness or financial returns out of it (either one would be a good reason to keep it going), then you're absolutely right to discontinue it. I'm sorry to see you close the book on it, but I'm happy to see you taking positive action to serve your goals.
I've enjoyed the tips over the years, and I propose an experiment, which you probably won't try, but here's the suggestion, anyway. Ask the subscribers who have received your newsletter over the years to pay you 50% of what it's been worth to them. Don't set a price, just ask people what the advice has been worth to them personally (everyone will have a different answer), and ask them to pay for it (retroactively) at a 50% discount.
I suspect you'd find people will send you more money as a "thank-you" than you would anticipate.
Even though the tips were given out free, and that model has turned out to not work for you, I think most people are honest and if you ask them if your tips have been worthwhile to them, most would answer enthusiastically yes. And if you ask them to pay you a portion of what it's been worth to them, I think most honest people will be happy to pay you the value of what they've been receiving over the years -- especially at the deep discount I'm suggesting. I think when people honestly think about what your work has been worth to them and what (if anything) they'd be willing to pay you for what you've given them, I think you'll be surprised.
I'll be the first one to sign up -- even if I'm the only one.
Thanks for all the effort you've put into this. Even if it hasn't been profitable for you, I hope you're sleeping better knowing you've put a lot of good ideas into people's heads -- and thus some good into the world.
I challenge you to put that "pay (some of) what you think this has been worth to you" request out there, and see what comes back.

Markus, I wish you well in your new venture. I totally agree with you about giving things for free. I was in the weight loss industry and advertised "free samples". It cost me a lot of money to send the free (not free to me!) samples out and pretty much what I ended up with was a list of people who needed to lose weight but didn't want to! I had unsubscribed from your list (which BTW was easily done) because I was very ill - too ill to read the messages. Now that I have improved, I wanted to resubscribe. I am disappointed that you stopped the newsletter but sympathize with you. Good luck to you in the future. Judy

Markus, this is a big Thankyou from Germany. I´ve been reading your newsletter way back since 2001. Your "101 Instant Marketing Strategies" continues to be a regular reference... much in the way people use the chinese I Ging: randomly open up a page and see where you can improve your business. And there is alway a lot of room for improvement. My favourite one is advice #35 "Don´t sweat the small stuff". Let your pizza be 95% round and spend the extra time listening to your customers (a.k.a. marketing). Keep it up, and drop us a line when you start a new business! Cheers, Michael Koulen

Thank you for the ideas that you have sent my way over the years. Enough of them were on target for me to keep reviewing them as they came in. I'm not part of the management team at our company - "just" a sales person working on straight commission - but my willingness to continue to look for fresh ideas (as well as old ideas that I had lost track of) to help me grow has done just that - helped me grow.
I'll miss your newsletter - but I understand why you are dropping it.
I'll be 70 in January, but I'm still growing and still succeeding. My wish is that you continue to grow and succeed too.
Sincerely,

Dear Markus, I understand all to well what you're doing and I agree with your final analysis. I've been stubbornly pushing on with my newsletter, although, it's not a business related newsletter it do serve it's purpose. Over the years I've been weening my newsletter membership for the change, so when I finally take the walk you're so boldly strolling now, it won't be a total surprise to all concerned. My grandmother told me many years ago, people often perceive free as meaning of no value, what a shame. So many people can't grasp the importance of what's being offered as valuable until a dollar sign has been placed in front of it. I thought she was being sarcastic but she's right, isn't she? I applaud you on taking action. I wish you well in all your endeavors. Don't let us go to fast Markus and keep a tab on us all, as I'm sure you will discover some small nuance that we should all know about, the moment you discard us to the vagaries of ourselves.
I loved scurrying off and discovering various tips which often proved more than helpful.
I personally will miss your information but understand your frustration and lack of appreciation; that so many of us fail to express under our poor excuses of being to busy.
So enjoy that new found freedom Markus and follow your own guide and path, remembering there will always be an ear hear...if you ever re-find that inclination or time to call in.
Warm regards Byron: PS: Not one complaint from this quarter

I found value in your emailed newsletters and planned in the future to pay for the next step. I don't usually buy from people I don't know and getting to know you was what would have prompted me to pay for information in the future. Hi Markus, I too, will miss your newletter. I read it as often as I had time, and have been better off, learning some of the things you advised about. I agree, free does not work. People think if it is free, it isn't any good. Tough way to learn a lesson, one that you yourself implemented in many ways. Good luck in the future.

Markus, I subscribe to MANY mailing lists and I always found yours (even if you didn't write them, you found them and presented them) to be amongst the very best. I think an e-book "best of" would be very attractive, too. Finally, I too agree with the perceived value of free advice and have had similar experiences with zero response when I offered valuable but free advice. (I teach marketing, after being in business for 20 years, so I teach the practice as well as the theory.) All the best with your future endeavours.

Markus,
Manually unsubscribing is simply a technical problem that can easily be fixed with the right software. (You should have tried Mailloop! :) )
Mixed messages? I'm not giving you mixed messages. First I said "Some have been valuable, but most are just re-hashed tips." I never said I didn't like any of your ideas. But you're claiming that the RAP Chips were YOUR idea (following your 'logic'). They weren't your idea. You pointed out someone else's great idea (which you did often and I'm not complaining about that). You did have an affinity for finding other people's unique marketing ideas and those I will miss (the other people's ideas).
The guitar tip wasn't yours. It was Corey's. That was in response to something you said about learning the guitar.
You said, "Bryan... you seemed happy with the newsletter... you even sent me spam message to boot."
I was happy with your newsletter early on. But then when I wanted to get off I couldn't.
I sent you spam? I never sent you spam. I only wrote you personal messages. If you've ever received a copy of our monthly newsletter (free by the way) it's because you requested it. You did ask about some batteries at one point and I answered you. Funny you only include PART of my emails.
You've been accused of blackmailing for very good reasons.
As far as warning your subscribers against the likes of John, Corey, and Mark J., what are you afraid of? Their success? While I do not know any of them personally (nor you for that matter), I have a greater respect for every single one of them than for you.
I won't be choosing to still receive your emails (I didn't want them when they were free so why would I pay for them?).
Thanks for keeping my thread alive. :)
Best of luck. Bryan

Bryan, One of the reasons I stopped the free newsletter was the added hassles of manually unsubscribing (even though my I required double opt-in from day 1 of publishing back in 1997) -- and as I've promised, you won't get emails from me unless you pay for a membership. I admit the most frustrating aspect of publishing the newsletter was the mixed messages I'd get on a daily basis. For example, here's a reply you gave to one of my ideas: > Markus, > > Need your kid to learn guitar? Check out http://www.guitartips.com.au/> > This guy was highlighted in Cory Rudl's InsiderSecrets vault this month. > He's got a very successful website and it's not very expensive to buy > his course. I've not personally bought his course 'cause I don't do > guitar, but it's worth a shot... > > Bryan Noonan > Zbattery.com > 800-624-8681 > > "Your Intelligent Battery Store" > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: Markus Allen [1] > Sent: Tuesday, March 22, 2005 6:29 PM > To: Bryan Noonan > Subject: MARKUS: 'The greatest sales copy ever' [10/18/2004] > > They say sending someone a sales letter is like crashing a party... > > ... You've got just a few moments to convince your host why you should > stay. > > One way to appeal to the host without saying a word is by "looking > good". > > Here are 5 fast and easy ways to make sure your sales copy get read: > http://www.marketing-ideas.org/the-greates...y-ever.php?I=199838> 739&T=731872 > This is Markus Allen's $10,000 Marketing Tip of the Day Copyright (c) > 1997-2005 by Markus Allen Worldwide rights reserved. > > To modify, subscribe a friend, or unsubscribe... visit: > http://www.marketing-ideas.org/tips.php?ID=198463255&T=731872> > Your subscribed e-mail address is: sales@zbattery.com Bryan... you seemed happy with the newsletter... you even sent me spam message to boot. And here's another> Every business has their own ethics to confront in one way or another. > I'm sure there are people who would criticize us for selling a potentially > environmental hazard ( http://www.zbattery.com), but we make a concerted > effort to educate people about the proper disposal methods, etc. > > It's all in how you apply each idea... I personally LOVED the idea about > the RAP chips.> > Bryan Noonan > Operations and Marketing > http://www.zbattery.comAt the same time Bryan, I've been accused of blackmailing affiliate programs to get paid, told to stick a tampon up my ass on my forum (and I didn't delete it... name anyone else willing to leave negative information on their own forum), and roasted for warning my subscribers about the likes of John Reese, Corey Rudl, and Mark Joyner. The good news is your test will survive (and won't be deleted) -- actually, I agree with your post below. And the best news is you won't have to endure my militant views any more... ... Markus, this is kind of a test to see if this message actually stays up because I'm a little surprised that no-one but your fans have posted.
Hey, I don't care what you do with your tips. Some have been valuable, but most are just re-hashed tips. I for one will not miss them (I've tried several times to get OFF your list, but you keep sending them!)
Besides, I never liked your militant view of other marketing people (i.e., your hatred for Corey Rudl and your loathing of Mark Joyner).
Best wishes on your new venture. I do wish you well.

Glad to read that you figured it out Marcus.
I'll miss the info you share. While I might not have read every message when it came in, I did read every message when my schedule permitted me to. I even shared your ideas with my B-News subscribers.
My newsletters are for people who experience cognitive impairments and all concerned others. My list is under 500 and fluctuates upward when I promote it. Perhaps I should charge for what I do. I'm not as savvy as you and the others you are acquainted with. But my subscribers need positive ideas to inspire them to overcome barriers to their living productive lives. Maybe they would be willing to pay me for what I do.
My www.bisga.org website and the local site I built for Pittsburgh at www.pabia.org provide free info and tools for anyone who wants them. Maybe my mistake is that I'm giving my work away. Thanks Marcus. I wish you well.

Bummer man. Hate to see you go! I was a big fan.
I heard a speaker say, "When people ask me for free advice, I don't give it to them. I charge them $400 an hour. And do you know why? Because if you give people the advice for free, they won't do anything."
It's a tough issue, the free thing. And while I believe in giving certain things away for free, eventually you just gotta say, "Hey, this information has value and should be paid for."
Alan Wiess also once said, "Don't be afraid to stand by your value and charge for it."
Keep it real man.
Your fan,

Well Markus, I for one will miss your excellent posts. I tried to read every one of your emails... and generally, was pretty good at doing so regularly. I wish you would continue, but I also understand your need to get something (cash?) in return for your generosity. Thanks for what you did do... from one grateful consumer of your minds products, free or otherwise. I know about "FREE".... as I have been running MSN Entrepreneur Group for going on 9 years. We provide much the same stuff you do, and we do it for free as well. The difference between us is - I do this for fun, not cash profit. My payment is in a different form, which I get in spades. Of course, I can also afford my own philanthropy. I wish you well in life.... all you need do is follow some of that sage wisdom you've shared with us, and apply it to an "earning endeavor" that will return what you need as payment for services provided. Again, and like most others - thanks for all that you've given us... Nick/Old Nikko General Manager, MSN Entrepreneur Group http://groups.msn.com/entrepreneur

Boy, I'm kind of shocked. And a little confused.
I ALWAYS read Markus' emails because they were so short and so useful. But I'm confused as to why his list didn't make money because I don't ever remember Markus offering a product for sale. Is it the membership site that didn't pan out? If so, I understand. I balked myself at becoming a member, and perhaps it was because of steady stream of good tips, I'm not sure.
Markus, I'm sorry to see you go, I really am.

Marcus,
I was probably on your list for 1 1/2 years or so. While I certainly didn't implement every tip you posted, hardly a message you sent me went without being opened and read. I know I got some really great ideas and I thank you.
But yea, the freebie stuff just doesn't work for the most part. If it's free, it's "worthless" in the eyes of most people. Package it up and sell it as an ebook and people still may not read it, but at least you made money. All the best in the future!

I appreciate your e-mail. It makes me think what I am currently doing, giving away Freebies and have yet earned a penny from it.
I guess it's true, when one pays for somenthing they appreciate it it more and take ownership of it. I guess it could be compared to the Welfare System...it simply doesn't work.

Hi Markus,
You are right. Like you I did the same exact mistake in giving away something people were paying hundreds of dollars for.
Over the years I got to appreciate your stuff, buyng some of the products you recommended and thinking of you of being more of a friend than a marketer.
Frankly speaking I was worried about you because you had just... vanished. Now that I know you are OK, I feel much more relieved.
I hope to you all the best. Keep in touch!

Angela below says "I totally concur about the freebie thing" and then in the next paragraph, "I am so greateful you were there with them when I was first starting out". A bit of a contradiction there. I am one of the ones who got a lot out of your freebies and I am grateful also that they were there when I was starting out. I cannot concur that it was a mistake. That's like saying, "you be there for me but forget everyone else - they are not important." Some of them are and some will be. Instead of having this pathetic little online pity party, Marcus, why don't you be the kind of person that Guru Marcus Allen of old would have been and celebrate all the people you have helped over the years, take all the good you can out of those years and then follow the breadcrumbs back to where you must have misstepped where I am sure you will find the road again. It is very selfish to leave like this with your last words being accusatory towards your subscribers (I think you called them sour grapes). Because that is what this is! Your subscribers ate up all your good advice that you indicated was freely given. I thought you were, and told other people you were, a bigger man than this letter shows. I feel like I have been hit below the belt twice - once because I am losing one of my better newsletters and the second time because you have tried to make us your scapegoats. Shame on you Marcus!

Engineers never throw anything away. I've kept most of what you've sent for quite a while. I'm sorry I didn't take the time or expend my limited resources to follow your lead. I look forward to you new venture.

Agh! So that's what happened to you??? I totally concur about the freebie thing - I've learned the hard way that it has to be controlled as part of your marketing spiral, so the suckers and bottom feeders don't drain you dry before you can offer something for dollars!
I also agree with some of the earlier posts here - I have used MANY of your great suggestions to very good result - I am so greateful you were there with them when I was first starting out.
The idea of an ebook is awsome - if you had a ten-volume set of the tips, it'd be an internet marketing classic. I make ebooks - maybe I can help.
Please do let us know when you're ready to start up again - we'll all be curious and wishing you the best. I'm not sure, frankly, about a trade mag, for myslf, but I bet there are plenty out there who are.
I hope I hope I hope you will figure out some way of making all those tips available - now I wish I had copied and pasted the ones I liked best insteadof bookmarking them!
Again, my very best to you and a ton of gratitude. aloha - Angela PIGEES.com

You're absolutely right about free advice and information, but this is something I have known for a long time. As an example, only yesterday I had an acquaintance call me about domain names and registrations. Should they use a dot com or a dot com.au because they are Australian based. I told them to run with the .au and explained the reasons why. I then told them I could get this for A$69 for 2 years and they replied that they could get it cheaper than that!!!! The time I had spent with them had I charged was worth at least $100 and they quibbled over $10! Amazing isn't it.

Always liked getting your emails. They were quality over all others. I do have to say however that I found your offers, if any, vague and confusing. Why? I don't remember any. If they were there they missed me.
I consider myself a rabid buyer, but only of quality material and from someone whom I trust. Which qualified you. Example. The guy who runs businesslyceum.com, I have subscribed to his "FREE" newsletter, and, not surprisingly bought a few of his products and his affiliated products over the last few years. His emails were good, like yours. But he pitched non stop to buy stuff. Like everyday. In my face! I had to break eventually. And I did. Anyhoo, just my 2 cents. Yours was a great daily email.... Rob

Well, I've been gearing up for some serious marketing over the past several years and am now . . . of all times . . . ready to roll up my sleeves and actually begin putting your good ideas to use. Let me know if you decide to make your tips available in the future, for a reasonable fee, perhaps? Thanks for the inspiration!

Great daily emails which will be missed. How about considering continuing for a fee? Also, what about an ebook with all the ideas in one place - for a fee as well? Thanks for the emails and I wish you would reconsider and continue them (again -even for a fee).

Hey, Mark - Although I've missed your emails, I 100% agree with your smart reasoning. The tire kickers and wannabees who want everything for nothing (while getting rich at their kitchen table one day a week sitting in their underwear) have been trained by the best of the so-called marketers, who then set them on fire with ridiculous hype to trick them into buying something (typically the junk du jour.) A carnival setting would seem appropriate for them ... I appreciate that you never did that. You have my private phone number and email address. If it got misplaced, contact me through my FCS site. If I can ever help you, I hope you won't hesitate to write or call. Big Blessings to you - Chip Tarver http://www.FirstContactSecrets.com

Just read my previous post again and realized that part of it did not make sense.
When I said that Markus had helped in adding "0" to my account, I meant that he helped in adding 0s (extra zeros) to my income, meaning my account went from hundreds to thousands.

You had some very good stuff. One idea lit up my mind and helped me to start a business that brings $500,000.00 in every year - out of my house. THANKS MUCH!
But two factors were a problem for me:
1. I get so much e-mail that I was inundated with good ideas from several sources. So I had to scan for things I could use.
2. You failed to establish a personal relationship with me (and I guess others). Had you bothered to give me a personal call to discuss some things as I had asked, our business with you might have been more meaningful. You just would not call, and I think that was a very important tool you decided not to use. Even if you had charged $1 a minute, I would have been interested in talking with you, and it probably would have led to us doing more business with you. Remember this for your next venture. Good luck.

I truly have missed the newsletter and am sadden to see it disappear permanently. As others have said, I am sure we all would welcome a newslettter whenever Markus feels the urge to write one. And, I would welcome him including links to affiliate products for him to actually make some money for his efforts.
I had the opportunity of working closely with Markus and I would have to say that I got more out of dealing with him then I did in buying THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of dollars worth of useless Internet "secrets" ebooks and courses.
Markus is definitely responsible for helping my losing internet business turn profitable last year and adding "0" to my bank account!
Although contraversial and opinionated most of the time, you know what to expect from Markus... the no bulls**t truth and many genius marketing ideas!
Markus, I wish you well in your latest business. Keep me informed and I hope to be able to work with you again soon.

Markus --
Entrepreneurs need "eyes and ears" out there, especially when they are attached to a brilliant mind. So I hope that you decide to use the email file you've built to contact all of us when you think of a new marketing idea or find a new product offerings that can help our ventures. Pitch us concepts and products that can help our businesses grow -- and make sure you get an "affiliate cut" for doing so!
No one says you have to email us every day. You've earned our trust, and I'll bet the vast majority of your subscribers would stay on your list getting a "Marketing Tip When Markus Feels Like It!"

I'll echo Silvio's comment... In fact, when asked on a mailing list about my favorite emails-of-the-day, I mentioned yours as one of my faves.
In any case. I've missed it. Let me know if there's anything I can do with your new deal.

While I did not read each and ever letter sent me, the one's read were always of interest and many actual "gems" for me.
So, now that it's late in the game and you are shutting out the lights, I've appreciated your constant flow of ideas and other gems.
Thank you and we'll look forward to your next venture{s}.
