maggiemay3939,
There's nothing in the WYBL rules at this time which restricts girls from playing on boys teams. With that being said, each WYBL feeder program may have their own set of guidelines for establishing team rosters. The whole idea behind the feeder concept is to develop young players for future high school teams. A high school boys varsity coach may insist his related feeder program restrict players on the feeder rosters to boys since these are the future players being developed for the boys high school team. I'm in no way discounting girls, and for this very reason, a WYBL girls program was established in 2009. Most of the boys programs hold tryout in the fall between September and November. If you click the "Contact Us" link on left hand column of the main WYBL home page and communicate with me, I'd be more than happy to email you the program coordinator for the boys feeder program within your area.
Thanks for your inquiry!

Are girls precluded from playing on the boys' Westco League teams via Westco boys' league rules?
If they are not precluded, and girls are allowed to play on boys' teams, when are tryouts for most of the Westco boys' teams?

I hope to get the week #3 standings posted today. I am still missing scores from the 5th grade Shorecrest vs. Stanwood game and the 6th grade Shorecrest vs. Lynnwood game. If anyone knows these scores, please send them to me right away by clicking the "Contact Us" link on the left hand column of the Wesco homepage. The delay in posting weekly standings is the result of not getting scores reported in a timely manner. Coaches or directors should email Darren C. and Jeff H. with these scores during the evenings following their games. Thanks to those who promptly report their scores!

disappointing weekend for sure. 2 of the games we had our team at full strength and 2 games we were missing players. my kids just didn't come to play. we lost 4 close games. Eastlake by 7, Skyline by 6, Bellevue by 3 and Mercer Island by 1. it was tough to duplicate the emotional and physical energy we put into the WESCO tournament.

Cascade 8th lost to Marysville 8th 41-32. Taking nothing away from a very good Marysville team, Cascade missing their point guard didn't help matters... Oh well, it's on to the tournament!

Cedar Park Christian Tournament.....thanks Scott for posting a link to our tournament flyer on your website's homepage. Cedar Park has an excellent facility and we are hoping to host a top notch tournament. One piece of information not on the flyer...we are offering a multi team discount.....for example..if 3 teams enter from the same select program the price drops from $250 to $225 per team. If 5 teams enter from the same select program, the price drops to $215 per team. We'd love to have as many Wesco teams as possible enter the tournament.
On a different note..I help coach a 7th grade select team made up of 7 boys that live in the Meadowdale High School District and 4 from the Edmonds/Woodway High School District. We have recently enjoyed the opportunity of playing Terrace, Cascade and Snohomish. If any 7th grade teams are looking for a practice game, we'd love to play. We'd have to play at your gym as we don't have a home gym. Scott...is it okay if I post my email address here? If not...just indicate on this message board that you are interested and I will find a way to contact you. Thanks. Ken Reidy

there was a 6th grade kid from lake stevens wesco playing for pirates that could touch the rim. the kid has the sweetest 10-12ft jumper i have ever seen. he dumped 30-something on us in the championship game.....and before you have to ask and the rumors start, yes i did talk with the lake stevens dad and offer my rental (rent free) in stanwood to his family

Another update if anyone is interested.
Stanwood 2014 played in the WYS Summer Slam this weekend and lost in the championship game by 5 to the Seattle Pirates (with several WESCO players on it).
Very impressive run for Jeff and his Stanwood 2014 team. Tournament included Washington Warriors, (2) ECBA teams, Seattle Pirates and more. Way to represent WESCO!

FYI to all of you WESCO Followers. We (Shorecrest 6th grade) played in a WTA tournament this weekend. Good competition with a Emerald City Force, Watts Reign and Seattle Pirates team. We had two wins and two losses. We lost by 4 to EC Force and 3 to Watts Regin.
Seattle Pirates, led by several WESCO kids (Lake Stevens, Kamiak, Jackson, MTL Terrace) won the tournament easily.
Great representation from WESCO!

If there are any 7th grade teams still playing there's a tournament up in Mt. Vernon area that has 13 teams in it. Below is a link of the bracket. I'm sure Tony would add the 14th to make things even. HURRY THOUGH. IT'S THIS WEEKEND. LOOKS LIKE HE COULD EVEN ACCOMMODATE A NON-FRIDAY GAME. THANKS GUY From: TonyTewalt [1] Sent: Tuesday, March 25, 2008 3:55 PM Subject: Tulip Tournament Brackets - Posted On-Line! The brackets for the 2008 Boys & Girls Tulip Basketball Tournament (March 28th-30th) are now posted on-line. Please go on-line and verify your teams game times for this weekend. http://www.skagitcounty.net/Common/asp/def...basketball/main.htm Please remember to bring a Participant Waiver Form for each of your players this weekend, if you have not previously turned them in. Each player on your team will need to have a waiver form filled out. You can turn these in prior to tip off of your first game right at the scorers table. Also, note that Fine Designs Imprinted Sportswear will be selling tournament apparel once again on Saturday (3/29) and Sunday (3/30) at Mount Vernon High School. Well have additional information in your packet at your first game, as well. Finally, spectators 12 years and older will be charged a $2.00 per day admission fee. Yes, there is a spring league thru the snohomish county boys and girls club. Alderwood B&G club runs the league and Paul Keen is the athletic director there. The league is run well and the facilities are great. I was in RB sports 2 years ago and we had the same problems. The league starts in the 3rd week of april. I encourage all to inquire including 7th grade teams.

One more quick note. I want to give props to the 5th grade Kamiak Knights team. They finished the regular season as the 10th seed with a record of 7-8 in the 5th grade division. These kids played their hearts out at the end of the season and stormed their way into the Wesco AAU championship game against a very talented Shorewood team. In the end, Kamiak didn't win the championship, but it's certainly a run these coaches and players will never forget. Great job Kamiak 5th graders and coaches!

I would like to send congrats to the 7th grade Everett team for finishing in 5th place. Cal, Jalen, Will, Evan, Kendall D, Kendall C, Joe, Reece, Darian, Jared, Toby and Bruce. This team struggled this year getting W's finishing as the 14th seed. After a good showing against the 3rd seed MLT, staying closer than the 11 point final score, they came back and won their next three games.
Great job fellas
Thank You WESCO people for another well run league. The web site is a fantastic tool for all of us at home to keep tabs on all the teams at different grade levels thru-out the season. Dont change a thing. Its perfect.

I think it is a great idea.
Another possible idea is including a sponsor. I have the ability to have BadenBall.com (Baden Sports Official Online Store) be a exclusive sponsor to provide WIAA licensed basketballs for the tournament. In exchange we would setup a table for parents/kids to purchase officially licensed basketballs.
Let me know your thoughts.

I'm working on an interesting idea with the ETL board. Please let me know what you think.
ETL vs. WESCO Ultimate Battle of the Feeder Systems
Here are some of my thoughts. Invite the top 4 ETL teams and the top 4 WESCO teams at each grade level (WESCO does not have 9th and ETL does not have 5th) Each ETL team would play 4 games…. a SAT and SUN doubleheader against the top 4 WESCO teams and vice versa The champion would be determined Ryder Cup style. 1 point awarded to the league for each win. There would be no grade level champion….only a league champion! If one of the top 4 teams did not want to participate the 5th place team would be invited ETL could host SAT or SUN and Stanwood could host the other. Or, if its easier, we could alternate every year. Stanwood would like to team-up with a specific ETL program and use this as a small fund raiser. If we charged each team $100 that would cover the referees. The gate/concessions would be kept by the host programs. The event could be held in the middle of March (well before SAT baseball games start) I could have a huge FEEDER CUP trophy commissioned that the winning program would hold for the year I feel the event would draw parents and players that didnt even qualify for the tournament There are two things that make an event like this very special 1. In most cases the games will be against teams that they havent seen all year 2. With the Ryder Cup point system its all about the depth of the league. One league could have the top team at each grade level and not only lose but lose badly. Imagine the excitement late on SUN if the points are close.
Please tell me your thoughts on this.
Thanks, Jeff Heckman Stanwood Assistant Program Director and 6th grade coach

I've been impressed with most of the 6th grade teams. Most of the teams have figured out how to handle our pressure which has closed the gap considerably. When I saw MLT at the MV tourney I told their coach I thought they would be top 3 in the league... I don't really know how they got to be 7-5.

We got off to an early 15 point lead against Lake. Lake had a lot of good looks but had a tough time getting the ball to fall in the first half. They pretty much played us straight up the rest of the way.
I wasn't at the Marysville game. We played with only 5 players and didn't apply our standard 4 quarters of pressure. The game was tight the wlole way with STWD 6 winning by 5 or 6. The boys said MSVL 6 hit 15 3's. I don't know if it's true....but that is a ton of bombs.

I have put together a team comprised of several wesco kids for 7th grade spring ball. I have a couple of boys a year younger that have done very well in wesco and spring leagues. The trouble is getting a competitive league to join without having to travel far. You would like to have a set schedule everybody can work on for planning around other sports (baseball). Throw in a few tourny's and you have a 20-30 game season by june. Gym time is hard to get. Any suggestions on leagues this year for spring?

Congratulations to all WYBL teams who participated in the MLK Tourney - especially to Arlington. Great job! I'd like to thank our 7th grade team and coaches for their efforts and great accomplishments already this season. As you may recall, this was the team that we didn't have in the WYBL last year since we didn't have enough kids at this age group in our first year. What happened with the Monroe 7th graders? I have a 7th grader playing for one of the feeder programs and have seen a healthy program at Monroe. Was it a low turn-out? I do know they have a strong alternate AAU tourny team I see in the spring. If all of the High schools back the feeder programs, it should help get kids for their program.

The situation in Monroe (regarding the 7th grade) is unfortunate. What might be more unfortunate is to place a 2nd tier 7th grade team in its place. I'm wondering if a 2nd tier 8th grade team would be more evenly matched. Also, if we can't find a team I'm wondering if the pair for Monroe could be scheduled to play with another pair so one weekend we would play 3 games, but another might be a bye. I would rather get into a tournament over a weekend than play 1 game.
Thanks

I recently located this website and was quite impressed. I am from Longview, Wa. We have formed a youth basketball select program consisting of 3-8 grade boys which acts as a feeder program for R.A. long High School. We are attempting to seek out tournament availability elsewhere within Western Washington as well as promote our own tournament which shall be held December 2nd. 3 game guarantee $150.00 I will be speaking with our coaches regarding tournament info in your area. If any one is interested in our tournament, they can reach me at 360-636-1447 or e-mail rrochon@longview.k12.wa.us.
Sincerely, Randy Rochon

Our league director sent out some info. from your meeting the other night. The BEST news I heard was that everyone would play everyone. That's far better than the 2 division thing. I would much rather play every team once, than half the teams twice. The other thing he mentioned was the possibility of moving the season end tournament to Jackson. Two things: 1. It's not as centrally located as Arlington, Marysville, or perhaps N. Everett. 2. Being in the 5th and 6th grade the last 2 years I can tell you that their second gym is not as large as Stanwood's, or Arlington's. A net goes down between main and second gym. One row of chairs lines that sideline, benches on the other. We've played 3 or 4 regular season games there and its standing room only. Crowds are bigger for the tournament. Unless there's a facility conflict I would look at Arlington. They have a brand new High School. The old high school gym was newly renovated and is as big as any high school. Plus there's a middle school 3 blocks away if needed. Just my thoughts, thanks for listening. Looking forward to another great season. The website looks awesome and the new teams add excitement. Thanks for all your time and effort with this league.

If you know of any kids up here in the North Sound area that would be interested, please have them contact me 360-631-6445. We are having try-outs this Sunday from 6-8 pm at the Arlington boys & girls club and on Oct 21st at the same time.

Cheryl, if the basketball player you are referring to resides within the boundaries of Marysville-Pilchuck High School, then he should be able to tryout for the Marysville AAU team. If not, then no, unless he can provide proof of an approved boundary exception on his behalf. Boundary exceptions aren't normally granted until a child is ready to attend the school of their choice.

One last question, and thank you very much this helps alot. Marysville boundries were expanded last year to incorperate alot of land in the Lakewood area. This child now has a Marysville adress and pays Marysville taxes, but attends Lakewood Middle School. So if he chose's to go to Marysville High School, in your eyes he should be able to tryout for the Marysville AAu team, since he is going to attend Their High School.. Just trying to get my ducks in a role when I ask about him tryingout for Marysville...Thanks so much for your time...... This message is a response to "A father's" question posted on 10/10/07. Thus far, I don't believe that the WYBL has received any inquiries from Archbishop Murphy High School. At least nothing has been brought up on the subject during past WYBL directors' meetings.

Cheryl, your question would be best answered by the Marysville AAU program director. In my case, the Mukilteo School District has two high schools, (i.e. Kamiak and Mariner). Mariner is not part of the WYBL at this time. I've had parents of kids in the Mariner school boundaries inquire about trying out for one of the Kamiak feeder teams. Some of these parents have insisted that their son will attend Kamiak. Anyone who's familiar with the Mukilteo School District knows that the student population at Kamiak is bursting at the seams and that it's virtually impossible to be granted a boundary exception. Therefore, all players in the Knights AAU program are required to provide a proof of address. I'm not familiar with Marysville's school district policies, but if the player you are referring to can attend MPHS with utmost certainty, then I would think they would be eligible to tryout for the Marysville AAU feeder program. I also know that MPHS has a huge student population and I would think they would be more restrictive on allowing boundary exceptions. Just my two cents, but again, I would defer to the Marysville AAU program director. Good luck!

Here's one for you guys. A player goes to Lakewood middle school, lives in Marysville and pays Marysville taxes. Is going to go to Marysville High School when he is a Freshman. There is no feeder program in Lakewood. Is he allowed to tryout for the Marysville feeder program, knowing he will be attending Marysville as a Freshman......Thank You < replied-to message removed by QT >

It all comes down to the high school these kids will eventually attend. Example: A 6th grader may attend St. Mary Magdalen (a private school) and later attend Cascade High School. This kid would be eligible to try out for the Cascade 6th grade feeder team. If they plan to attend Archbishop Murphy High School, then they would not be eligible to play on a Wesco AAU team since Archbishop is not in the league. The whole idea behind Wesco AAU is to develop players from within. There are many other AAU teams in the Puget Sound area that these kids can try out for. Check the local newspapers or the Pacific NW AAU website for tryout announcements. Here's the link for Pacific NW AAU: http://www.pnaau.org/

Guy,
The middle school season changes won't affect our WESCO League schedule because we typically only play on weekends. With our new divisional format, everyone plays twice within the division and schedule will have you playing against 2 other teams from the opposite division on the WESCO AAU League opening weekend. This will rotate every year so you can be sure that you'll eventually have a chance to play everyone. We will cross over in the League tourney which provides another opportunity to play someone that you might not have faced during the year.
We've been assured that Mountlake Terrace WILL field a 7th grade team this year and the pairings are not official yet, but, we have identified the ideal partner teams which include MV with OH and Stanwood with Arlington.
Thanks for the interest as always - take care and good luck this season.

I second the website's new look is great. Congratulations on adding 2 new teams.
I was having a discussion yesterday with our Middle School Principle here in Arlington and he told me that here in Arlington and whatever league (I believe he said North County) they play in for basketball they have decided to move the boys basketball season to the 3rd sports season of their school year. That means they don't start until mid January. Does this effect the Wesco schedule?
Speaking of the schedule, with 2 divisions now will we still play everyone, or just the teams in our division?
Regarding the 7th grade league, will Mountlake Terrace field a team this year?
Lastly did things work out so that Arl/Stan. and O.H./M.V. got paired together for the upcoming year?
Thanks Guys and Congratulations again for all your efforts regarding this league.

Here's the Wesco website: http://infosports.com/wybl/To all interested parties, Use the "Contact" link at the bottom of the main Wesco page to send your inquiries. Please understand that we don't add just one team to the Wesco Youth Basketball League (example - One 7th grade boys team). If we expand, we add a feeder program (i.e. - 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade boys teams representing a high school service area). Each "feeder" program is paired with another feeder program for game scheduling purposes. Therefore, the league must maintain an even number of feeder programs in Wesco.

From the first time we saw you in the fall league to the WESCO championship game your Monroe 5th team was so vastly improved. Must have been great coaching. Congrats to your squad! Please tell Wyatt (#12) and his family that I just saw a brand new 4500 sq ft home on 10 acres in the heart of downtown Stanwood for $150,000. Let me know if they are interested, I will put down the earnest $$ and we should be able to close the deal before next season.

Hi Coach, thank you for asking about our player. I heard that he did suffer a mild concussion, but that he was going to be okay. That kid plays all out, all the time. Any chance they might put a bit more padding along that wall? Thanks for all your work on putting on the tourney, and congrats to your 5th grade team for finishing the season undefeated. Thank you on another well run season by the WESCO group. I have 1 son who went thru the system of wesco and he made the freshman team being only 5'2" tall. Coaching and competition help him along in his growth. I now have a 6th grader still in the system. I would like to let spring coaches know, Sno boys and girls club is offering a select league and would like the competition to be strong. If you are thinking about spring, think of this league in the near future. The league starts in the middle of april.

COACHES LOOKING FOR SPRING B-BALL OUR LEAGUE WEBSITE HAS INFORMATION ON OPTIONS FOR SPRING BALL. IF YOU LOOK AT THE LEFT HAND SIDE ON THE MAIN PAGE, PACIFIC NW AAU, WA YOUTH SPORTS, WTA, RB SPORTS, AND EASTERN WA ALL EITHER HAVE LEAGUES OR RUN EXCELLENT TOURNAMENTS. EASTERN WA, WHICH IS ALSO KNOWN AS INLAND EMPIRE WWW.IEAAU.ORG, HAS WELL ORGANIZED TOURNAMENTS EACH WEEKEND. THE BOYS CLUB IS ALSO OFFERING A SELECT SPRING LEAGUE. TOURNAMENTS ARE A GREAT OPTION FOR TEAMS BECAUSE YOU CAN DO THEM EVERY WEEKEND OR EVERY OTHER WEEKEND AND GET QUALITY COMPETITION. FOR INSTANCE, I HAVE PLAYED IN THE RB SPORTS LEAGUE, AND THE COMPETITION WAS SO-SO. I THINK THAT TOURNAMENTS CAN GIVE YOU MORE COMPETITION AND A LITTLE MORE FLEXIBILITY. THE FACT THAT A LOT OF BOYS PLAY BASEBALL, MAY EFFECT THE LEVEL OF COMPETITION IN THESE SPRING LEAGUES. THE ONE REASON I LIKE RB SPORTS IS THAT THE GAMES WERE ON SUNDAYS AND I COULD WORK AROUND ANY BASEBALL SCHEDULES. I THINK YOU WILL BE HARD PRESSED TO GET WESCO TO DO A SPRING LEAGUE. I HOPE SOME OF THESE OTHER OPTIONS WILL HELP.

Just reading some of the comments about spring basketball. I am looking for a decently ran spring league for 5th and 6th graders close to where wesco home base is. I dont want to travel to seattle to get games and would like to stay within wesco boundries. I had kids on my spring team last year thru the YMCA in everett that played on 4 5th and 6th grades wesco teams this year. I think a spring league supported by wesco is a good idea even if we have to shrink the number of team down from 13, to keep them playing. Any ideas on leagues would be helpful.

Mike of Cascade,
There's no secrecy in the final seedings. As of 2/14/07, there are still games to be played so not all seeding have been determined. I've updated the web site with the information I have thus far. Everyone's patience is much appreciated. Hopefully, coaches and directors will be more timely in reporting their game scores next year. "The final standings will be posted after all regular season games have been played. All make-up games should be completed by Friday, February 16th."
The message is not the messenger I understand.
And we will have exactly zero practices after Friday. That's our problem and nobody elses. But ... if one person know the scores and the potential match-ups, then we all should have the same info. Right now we could play any one of seven teams. Why the secrecy?

I agree that there are a lot of kids that dont play baseball in the Spring and why should they pay big $$$ to play for Emerald City when they could be playing and representing WYBL in Seattle. Jeff,
I just see this as an opportunity for kids to play more basketball. In the spring, many Wesco teams lose kids to sports like baseball or soccer. Oftentimes, this leaves kids who want to play spring basketball with limited opportunities. From my own personal experience, I usually hear from 4 or 5 players off a roster who express an interest in playing spring basketball in any given year. Rather than having spring basketball players seek out other outside teams, why not assemble Wesco players onto spring teams? Depending on the numbers, we could certainly form more than one team per grade level. Multiple teams could be formed geographically. It would be interesting to see just how well a team of combined Wesco players might compete at a big AAU tournament.
Last year, our 6th grade Kamiak and Shorecrest programs combined kids to play in the PNWAAU spring league. This is the kind of opportunity Im talking about. Throw out all of the political B.S. that goes on with selecting Little League all star teams. We know all of these kids can play basketball, so the more opportunities we can offer them, the better.
There was talk last year of potentially putting together a summer basketball camp for Wesco players at a central site like Arlington or Stanwood. If someone could take this on, it would be awesome to invite former Wesco stars to assist with providing training and instruction.
Again, these are just some ideas to create more basketball opportunities for the whole WYBL family. Its good to get people thinking and talking about these ideas even if they dont come to fruition.
Just my two cents.

I don't think the program reps should get involved in deciding which kids make an all-star team. Just seems like it could have a polarizing effect. I'm all for individual coaches picking up players as he/she (very p/c of me don't you think?) sees fit and going out and competing against other "club" teams.

Garett - I think it would be great if Wesco all star teams were formed for 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades at the conclusion of the Wesco season. These teams could compete in the local AAU spring league in order to prepare for a regional AAU tournament like the one in Reno, Nevada talking place during Memorial Day weekend. I will bring this up at the next Wesco meeting.

We (Cascade 6th grade) played Arlington on Saturday. During the game one of their players was hurt (ankle/knee) injury. Just checking in to see if anyone might know how he is doing? I hope everything is okay as he looked like he was in a lot of pain.

The Knights played good basketball during the MLK weekend up in Bellingham and took 1st in the Western Washington University Tournament. It was good to see Wesco well represented at the tournament with teams from Oak Harbor, Mount Vernon, Arlington and Kamiak for grades 5th through 8th. I believe that Arlington took 1st in the 8th grade division.

Sportsmanship: "The ability to be gracious in winning or losing." As we get more into the Wesco schedule and less in tournaments let's all try to remember to keep proper perspective of what we are doing. You get no bonus points by embarrassing another Wesco team. Many of these kids develop friendships and mutual respect for opponents while battling as fierce competitors on the court. I have seen players that were hated ememies in the 5th grade, give each other hugs after 8th grade games. Go figure - the players know what to do. The game is ended with a final show of sportsmanship - the shaking of hands. Good luck and have fun.

Our 5th grade squad lost to Arlington's team in the championship game of the Port Angeles Martin Luther King Jr. Tourney on Sunday. I know that Cascade's 5th graders also competed and did well, too. Congratulations to all WYBL teams and coaches.

Guy,
My understanding is that teams will play both weekends. I will forward information to you as soon as I get it. I know that Mike P. (Stanwood) has been working on the brackets and format.

Thanks for the reply Scott. I'm trying to schedule our team into a couple of tournaments at the end of the season. Am I to assume that we'll play both weekends?

Pro Photo Express is looking for a Large Basketball Tournament to photograph Action Shots during the Holiday break. Prefer one that has 3-5 courts going at one time in the same area, as in Juanita High School. I set up 9 laptops to view photographs on right after the game. We print onsite. Contact me about this or any other venues you would like great photos at. darcy@prophotoexpress.com 425-402-0296
