Subject: Guest Speaker Ken Keeler
PLEASE DIRECT ANY REPLIES OR COMMENTS TO greenwaldsj@appstate.edu.
Ken Keeler, past writer of both "The Simpsons" and "Futurama" will speak at Appalachian State University on Monday August 1st at 4pm in 103A Walker Hall. His talk will combine the following: "A discussion of how math permeated the atmosphere at "Futurama," a discussion of why, despite having spent nearly my entire working career in TV, I still think getting my PhD was the most important thing I've ever done, and a short version of the talk I gave the Hollywood Math Club a couple of years ago on a semi-recreational problem I find interesting: the dissection of a square into a finite number of smaller unequally-sized squares."
Ken Keeler has a PhD in applied math from Harvard and worked at Bell Labs before moving to Hollywood to write for David Letterman. He has won Writer's Guild and Emmy Awards for his work.
Plan to attend! The talk will begin at 4pm and all are invited to tea before from 3:15-3:45 in the 3rd floor lobby of Walker Hall. Sponsored by the Department of Mathematics. For more information, contact Dr. Sarah J Greenwald, greenwaldsj@appstate.edu, 262-2363, and see simpsonsmath.com/futuramamath

Am I reading these science seminar titles correctly? Are they all "evolution" based?! I am terribly bothered by this if that's the case. Is this something that could be counter offered by a group of creationist seminars if one were to find people to teach/offer them? Jamie <><

I don't think that creationism is being taught in the schools in this area. We are trying to provide content information for science teachers. One of the topics in the seminars deals with the controversy surrounding the teaching of evolution. Perhaps that would be a good meeting for some to attend to give different points of view.

Evolution is part of the North Carolina Biology and Earth Science Standard Course of Study. Evolution does not teach there is no God. Evolution is defined as change over time. The Earth has changed geologically and biologically. The curriculum is based on observable and testable evidence and doesn't threaten a belief in God. Students do not have to choose between understanding evolution and God. If anything it can add to the sense of wonder and awe that life can adapt and change. The Catholic Church and most Protestant Church leaders have written statements that the teaching of evolution is not in conflict with belief in God. I hope this helps.

Could someone tell me how to test and control for variables concerning evolution? I believe there may only be evidence and the theory that goes with it. I am not sure how one proves evolution (biologically speaking one species to another), though natural selection is an observable phenomena. If presented as theory based on evidence rather than as a fact, I believe most could present the case to students and be able to answer questions regarding other possibilities. Science is based generally on observable facts, controlling variables, and answering testable hypotheses while learning about the world around us. If evolution is presented in a nonthreatning way teachers and students should be able to learn. I think sometimes dogmatic perspectives on both sides miss the mark concerning science and technology. ap

Evolution Questions: 1. Where are the evidences of transitions present in our world today? Why, if the earth is so old according to Evolution hasn't our moon disappeared if it moves away from earth at @1.5 inches yearly? With the amount of eneryg the Sun uses up each year we would not have a sun if it is all as old as is said. Why is it still here? Why do some animals exist now that without certain parts (not yet evolved)could not have existed at all? I will mention evolution as a theory only within my classroom but intelligent design will be entertained also. Wisdom comes from truth. Evolutionary theory has been disproved on a number of occations, but there are those who choose to believe it as true for fear of the alternatives. I believe that faith in the Evolutionary Theory is a worldview. It is one when held will tolerate no other.

More information:Media Literacy BEYOND HEAR OUR CRY : ITS NOT JUST WHAT THEY WATCH-ITS HOW THEY WATCH . At his recent presentation in Wilkesboro, Paul Slocumb discussed the role of the media in the lives of adolescents. Calling media the new family member, he voices concerns about the limited role models todays videogames, TV , movies and Internet afford impressionable boys and girls. In his book, Paul Slocumb says, messages communicated via the media are significant because while the adolescent brain processes everything it takes in, its incapable of evaluating ALL the information .The adolescent brain is still developing. Adolescent boys need caring adults who interact with them and solicit dialogue from them concerning the messages they are getting via TV, film and commercials….the media has become the new TEACHER.[ P 94]. At Appalachian State, the RCOE has long recognized the role of mass media in the lives of the young. Dear Public School Partnership Schools,
I hope everyone is having a good summer. I need your help. I have been working much of the summer trying to complete the ASU Public School Partnership Tile Diversity Project. Many of you have been very helpful in painting your tiles and taking pictures in your area. The project is coming together and will be a nice display that represents the diverse culture of our mountain region. You will be invited to celebrate the project and your part in it soon. I need to clarify a few things that will help me finish. They are as follows:
1. If you have not sent a painted tile or photograph. Please do as soon as you can and send to this address: Linda McCalister Edwin Duncan Hall Appalachian State University Boone, NC 28607 2. Photographs-scanned or digital photos should be 300dpi and no smaller than 6 on any side. If this is impossible please send a photo to me to scan 3. Photographs should be a picture of something that represents the people of your area or community. We are trying to show the diverse culture of the western region. School buildings and students do not really do this and we have a sampling of that already. 4. Make sure your description explains why the phot represents the culture of the area. Dont just give a title. 5. I have several photos here that can be used on a first come basis if it represents your area. I can also help with the description if you want me to. ***revised with tile information
Many of the tiles look good. Several could be re-done. Remember that your tile is representing your county and your school. Some of the teachers have painted the tiles themselves. We all know student work can look like the developing student or it can look less than desirable for a wall display. You can decide and we will send you supplies to redo your tile if you were not happy with the one you sent. 3. Photographs-scanned or digital photos should be 300dpi and no smaller than 6 on any side. If this is impossible please send a photo to me to scan 4. Photographs should be a picture of something that represents the people of your area or community. We are trying to show the diverse culture of the western region. School buildings and students do not really do this and we have a sampling of that already. 5. Make sure your description explains why the phot represents the culture of the area. Dont just give a title. 6. I have several photos here that can be used on a first come basis if it represents your area. I can also help with the description if you want me to. The photos are as follows: Beekeeping Square Dancing Storytelling Weaving Clogging Hunting
I have a plethora of these pictures so if you have sent these please email me about replacements: School buildings School children Streams, trees, scenery Churches Old houses Old main street buildings

Dear Linda, My name is Susan Stroup. I am principal of Glen Alpine Elementary School in Burke County. We either did not receive a tile or it was misplaced. Is it possible to still obtain one to decorate so our school is represented? Thank you for any information you can give, Susan Stroup

ASU School Partnership is proud to once again offer the class for teachers pursuing National Board Certification. This class is conducted by two NBCTs who helped develop the curriculum and have taught the class for the past 3 years. These previous classes resulted in a higher percent of first year certification than the national average. There will be ten classes this fall focusing on the organization and interpretation of the portfolio process. Spring semester offers candidates a chance to have their entries read with follow-up individual conferences. The cost is $300 for both semesters with the fall classes starting September 7 at 5:30. For further information, please contact Susan Wilson at wilsons@watauga.k12.nc.us.

DPI is in the process of gathering names of teachers of exceptional children from across the state. Since we have an exceptional children program at Appalachian State University, they would like for us to suggest the names of (K-12) teachers who might be interested in taking part in the study( the panel will be looking at Praxis Test 0511). The study will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 6th in Raleigh. ETS is working with us to provide food and lodging and DPI will cover substitute costs.
Please talk with your teachers of exceptional children and see if anyone is interested and email their names and emails address to me by Friday 8th. Thanks for your help.

Each of you has either volunteered or been chosen to be a representative for the ASU Public School Partnership. Keeping this site updated is a challenge given marriages, promotions, change in schools etc.. If you are geteting this email you are the current principal or representative. In some cases, both. I would like to thank all of you for your willingness to help the Partnership disseminate information. Since I have been in this position the biggest complaint that I receive is the lack of information coming from the Reich College of Education directly to classroom teachers. You are the second line of information sent out from the Partnership and really the most importnat as far as getting information into teachers hands. I would like to request that you do these things to insure that we are up to date with this list and that your teachers are getting the information that they are requesting. 1. Please check this list to see if all the information is correct for your principal and representative. email mccalisterlm@appstate.edu if it is incorrect. http://www.partnership.appstate.edu/replist.htm 2. Create a section in your school faculty information area to disseminate Partnership information and/or disseminate this information at weekly faculty meetings. Make sure individuals who are to get information in your schools (such academically gifted teachers-Scholars Weekend) receive information directed to them. If you are unable to do these things please let your principal know so that she/he can choose another representative. Once again. Thanks for your help Linda McCalister Director, ASU Public School Parnership

I have received this message over and over and over and over. You have sent the message to Oak Hill Elementary School, but we are receiving everyone's messages. Truthfully, I don't want to read everyone's messages. The person to contact at the school is Janie Rickman at jrickman@caa.k12.nc.us, but only for direct information. No one really wants to dialog constantly; we are trying to teach children here and not sit and respond to e-mails constantly. I appreciate the thought but please fix this problem. Information for high school French classes. If you are interested in having Lynn visit a French class please email me at mccalisterlm@appstate.edu
LYNNE MANSURE
Lynne spent a formative part of her childhood in Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia) where her father was a Methodist missionary. After the familys return to the USA, she attended Earlham College where she graduated in 1962. During her senior year she was involved in a project to send a group of Earlham students to Kenya for a work camp and she was one of eight students who went to Kenya to work with the Friends mission that same summer. Once the work camp was over, she got a teaching job. In 1964 she was awarded a scholarship by the Government of France and she spent two years in Paris where she studied at the Sorbonne and then she did a teaching diploma at the BELC. Following these studies, she returned to Kenya in 1966 and taught French for ten years.
During this period, Kenya was changing from a British curriculum to a Kenyan curriculum and Lynne participated in the committees recommending the changes. In 1970 she was one of the teachers trained to mark national examinations by an examiner from the Cambridge Examinations Board in the U.K. She participated in marking national examinations for many years and eventually rose to the position of Chief Marker as well as Chief Examiner for the French oral examinations. Having become a Kenya citizen in 1974, she was eligible for promotion in the civil service. In 1976 she went to the Kenya Institute of Education to work as a curriculum developer and in 1979, she was appointed Inspector of Schools or Supervisor. In this capacity, she was in charge of the teaching of French throughout Kenya.
In 1990, Lynne opted for early retirement from the Kenyan civil service. She taught part time at the Alliance Française up to 1998. There her duties included teaching translation. As there appeared to be no curriculum for this course, she designed the curriculum for translation and wrote the teaching materials. Since 1998, she has been a free lance translator, editor and report writer working on contract basis for various United Nations organizations as well as for non governmental organizations. She has written several childrens books including a book on Kenya published by Grolier which she co-authored with the late Sylvia McNair. Her most recent activity has been helping to found in 2001 an organization in her locality which assists persons with disabilities, in particular, children.

Hi everyone,
I received this and would like to pass it on.
I found this on the web:
In the Fall of 2004 PCS, Aurora introduced a "fossil dig kit" for teachers and educators.
The kit includes a five-gallon bucket of fossil rich material and a paleontology guide.
To inquire about obtaining a kit, send an email to . This would be a great classroom exercise!! Please pass this information along to anyone who could benefit from this. This is a great way to introduce children to fossils even if you don't have the time to volunteer to go to a school to hold a fossil event yourself. PCS prefers the kits go to a school delivery address, not the teachers home address. Limit 1 (one) kit per teacher, per year..
You could also contact the Aurora Fossil Museum at (252)322-4238

Looks like a good opportunity Lexus and Scholastic Announce Launch of Environmental Challenge Education Program Deadline: Various Automaker lexus ( http://www.lexus.com/about/corporate/community.html ) has announced the launch of the lexus environmental challenge, a program designed to educate and empower students to take action to improve the environment. The program encourages middle and high school students across the united states to develop and implement environmental programs that positively impact their communities. More than $1 million in total scholarships and grants will be awarded to students, teachers, and schools. Lexus has joined with scholastic ( http://www.scholastic.com/ ), the global children's publishing, education, and media company, to create the program. The Lexus Environmental Challenge has two distinct elements: standards-based supplementary educational materials and a contest to reward environmental action. The contest helps young people apply what they've learned in class through the program and empowers them to make improvements in their community by participating in any of the four environmental team challenges. Middle and high school teams comprised of five to ten students and one teacher advisor are invited to participate in four initial challenges, each addressing a different environmental element -- land, water, air, and climate. For each of the challenges, teams will define an environmental issue that is important to them, develop an action plan to address the issue, implement the plan, and report on the results. Teams are invited to participate in as many of the four challenges as they choose. Submission Deadlines are: Challenge #1 (Land) -- October 5, 2007; Challenge #2 (Water) -- November 5, 2007; Challenge #3 (Air) -- December 5, 2007; and Challenge #4 (Climate) -- January 7, 2008. There will be sixteen winning teams for each of the four challenges -- eight middle school and eight high school teams. The winning teams will each receive a total of $3,000 in scholarships and grants. The sixty-four winners of the first four challenges will be invited to participate in the Final Challenge, where teams will develop an environmental program with the potential to impact the world in a dramatic way. From the Final Challenge entries, fourteen finalists and two grand-prize-winning teams will be selected. Each of the fourteen finalists will receive a total of $50,000 in grants and scholarships, and the two grand-prize-winning teams will each receive $75,000. The money will be shared by the students, teacher advisor, and school. Full program information, including rules and entry details, can be viewed at the Scholastic Web site. RFP Link: http://fconline.foundationcenter.org/pnd/10009048/scholasticlexus For additional RFPs in Education, visit: http://foundationcenter.org/pnd/rfp/cat_education.jhtml --------------------------<<>>---------------------------- 8) Target Corporation Expands Student Field Trip Grant Program Deadline: November 1, 2007 A philanthropic program of Target Corporation ( http://www.target.com/ ), the Target Field Trip Grant program will award grants to schools across the United States for field trips in the spring of 2008. Grant-funded field trips may involve museum, environmental, or science projects; artistic and cultural experiences; and civics or community service projects. Grants may not be used for salaries or equipment. Education professionals, 18 years or older, who are employed by an accredited K-12 public, private, or charter school in the U.S. that maintain a 501(c)(3) or a 509(a)(1) tax-exempt status are eligible to apply. Educators, teachers, principals, paraprofessionals, or classified staff of these institutions must be willing to plan and execute a field trip that will provide a demonstrable learning experience for students. Previous recipients of a Target Field Trip Grant are not eligible to apply. Up to 1,600 grants of up to $1,000 each will be awarded in February 2008. Please make sure your HS Social Studies Teachers get this information. Thanks The Social Studies Learning Community of the Public School Partnership has identified staff development on current problems and issues in our field as a top priority. After gathering input from your teachers about what they needed, we designed a workshop to address the following three objectives: 1) A content seminar on the U. S. History goals where the End-Of-Course Exam grades are the lowest across our region. Dr. Michael Krenn from the Appalachian State Department of History will lead a seminar on the Gilded Age and the Progressive Era. 2) Information from the Social Studies consultants from the Department of Public Instruction on the new Concept Based Curriculum for Social Studies. 3) A presentation by the North Carolina Council on Economic Education about Personal Financial Literacy, which has recently been added to the Civics and Economics curriculum. Participants will receive free teaching materials valued at $100 and otherwise available only through purchase. The workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center in Boone and is appropriate for U. S. History and Civics and Economics teachers. The common session on Concept Based Instruction in the morning will be followed by a catered luncheon, during which Dr. Karl Campbell from the History Department will talk about his recently published book, Sam Ervin: Last of the Founding Fathers. In the afternoon, participants will select one of two sessions based on the course they teach. Please see the attached agenda for further details. Registration begins at 7:45 a.m., and the workshop will adjourn at 4:15 p.m. Registration for the day is free, but there is a charge of $10.25 for lunch. CEU certificates of participation will be provided to attendees. We are grateful to our presenters for their willingness to share their expertise and are impressed by the quality of the presentations they are preparing. Thank you for distributing this invitation to your Social Studies teachers, and we look forward to seeing them on March 5. Please use the registration form below to register by the deadline of February 25. Make checks for the luncheon payable to the ASU Public School Partnership. Application for workshop http://www.partnership.appstate.edu/focus/hs_social.htmCheryl Irwin-please email me at mccalisterlm@appstate.edu I am not sure of what you are referring to. Thanks

National Gardening Association Announces 2009 Healthy Sprouts Awards Program Deadline: October 17, 2009 The National Gardening Association ( http://www.garden.org/ ) encourages the growth of health-focused youth garden programs through the Healthy Sprouts Awards sponsored by Gardener's Supply Company ( http://www.gardeners.com/ ). The awards support school and youth garden programs that teach about nutrition and the issue of hunger in the United States. To be eligible for the 2009 Healthy Sprouts Awards, a school or organization must plan to garden in 2010 with at least fifteen children between the ages of 3 and 18. The selection of winners is based on the demonstrated relationship between the garden program and nutrition and hunger issues in the United States. In 2009, the program will present awards to twenty schools or organizations. Each recipient program will receive gardening supplies and resources, including gift certificates toward the purchase of gardening materials from Gardener's Supply. The top five programs will each receive a certificate valued at $500; fifteen more programs will each receive a $200 gift certificate. Visit the KidsGardening Web site for complete program guidelines and application. Grant opportunity: NC Beautiful < http://www.ncbeautiful.org/>, a provider of environmental education and beautification opportunities in North Carolina, is accepting applications for its 2010 Windows of Opportunity Grants. Grants of $1,000 each are available to certified, full-time K-12 teachers in North Carolina. The program provides educational grants to reward the state's teachers for their creativity in fostering environmental stewardship, leadership, and awareness and initiating a sense of community service. The grants were created to cultivate an appreciation of natural environments by helping children get out of school and into natural settings. The grants also are intended to build leadership awareness, develop environmental educational mentors and ambassadors, create materials and resources that can be used by other K-12 students, and develop sustainable, outdoor programs. http://foundationcenter.org/pnd/rfp/rfp_item.jhtml?id=268400010RFP: http://www.ncbeautiful.org/webpages/ncb/ap...n.nsf/register.html
