Final Weekend Wrap: Twins In Playoff
Baseball isn't done at the Metrodome quite yet. The Twins beat the Royals 13-4 Sunday to finish tied at 86-76 with the Tigers for first place in the AL Central.
A one-game playoff will be held Tuesday in the Metrodome. The 163rd game could not be played Monday because the NFL refused to move the Packers-Vikings game from the stadium.
It is the second straight season that the Twins have been involved in a playoff to determine the ALC champ. They lost to the White Sox last season.
Jason Kubel hit two, three-run homers to power the Twins' offense Sunday. Delmon Young hit two homers and Michael Cuddyer one for Minnesota. Orlando Cabrera had three hits to extend his hitting streak to 15 games.
Earlier in the weekend, the Twins beat the Royals twice while the White Sox were beating the Tigers. You can read summaries of the two Twins games below and in the Archives/Blog section of the site.
The Sox lost to the Tigers, 5-3, on Sunday to enable Detroit to finish tied with the Twins.
Chicago beat the Tigers, 8-0, behind the pitching of Jake Peavy on Friday. Freddy Garcia pitched well in a 5-1 win on Saturday. Alex Rios had four hits for the Sox in that game. The Sox finished the season 79-83.
In the NL, the Brewers swept the Cardinals with a 9-7 win in 10 innings Sunday. Prince Fielder hit homers No. 45 and 46, with the latter providing the game winning run in the top of the ninth.
Milwaukee scored six runs in the seventh inning to post a 12-6 win on Friday night. Craig Counsell had three hits.
Ryan Braun surpassed the 200 hit mark on Saturday as the Brewers won 5-4. Milwaukee finished 80-82.
The Cubs lost 12-6 to the D-Backs on Friday, but bounced back for a 5-0 win on Saturday, as Randy Wells won his 12th game. On Sunday, the Cubs lost 5-2 to finish 83-78..
You can read more about all the weekend games by going to the team web sites via MDR links.
Nathan Is Player Of Week
Twins closer Joe Nathan set a franchise record for saves and had two huge ones in wins that kept his team in the AL Central race. That's good enough to also earn him the final MDR Player of the Week honor for the season.
Other MDR team Players of the Week included:
** the Brewers' Ryan Braun, who reached the 200 hit mark and other milestones during the week.
** the Cubs' Randy Wells, who gave up only three hits and struck out 10 while earning his 12th win of the season.
** the White Sox's Jake Peavy, who shut out the Tigers and has shown a glimpse of what Sox fans can expect from him next year.
Cuddyer Pulls Twins Even
Michael Cuddyer's home run in the bottom of the 8th inning gave the Twins a 5-4 win over the Royals and enabled them to pull even with the Tigers in the AL Central race.
The win. combined with the White Sox's 5-1 win over the Tigers Saturday night, has the ALC race tied going into the final game. Carl Pavano will start for the Twins Sunday against KC's Luke Hochevar.
Nick Blackburn outdueled the Royals' Cy Young candidate Zack Greinke Saturday and left the game with a 4-1 lead. Joe Mauer knocked in the first Minnesota run. Delmon Young doubled in three more.
But, the Royals came back to tie it, 4-4, setting up Cuddyer's heroics in the 8th. Joe Nathan earned his 47th save in the ninth. Denard Span made a great diving catch in right field in that inning.
Twins Back Within 1 Game
The Twins moved within a game of the AL Central lead by outslugging the Royals 10-7 Friday while Jake Peavy and the White Sox shut out the Tigers, 8-0.
Delmon Young hit a grand slam homer and drove in five runs to lead the Twins' attack. Jason Kubel also homered.
Jeff Manship won his first big league game. Joe Nathan set a Twins' record with his 46th save.
Peavy held the Tigers to two hits in eight innings in Detroit. Scott Podsednik and Carlos Quentin homered for Chicago.
Nick Blackburn will take the mound for the Twins Saturday in a game that has been moved to 3 p.m. so it can be nationally televised.
You can read about the game by going to the Twins' site via MDR links.
