Weekend Wrap

John Danks pitched seven scoreless innings, and Alexei Ramirez homered, as the White Sox beat the Cubs, 7-0, Sunday.

The Sox took the Crosstown Rivalry series 2 games to 1. You can read about the other games by going to briefs below or to the Archives/Blog section of MDR.

The Brewers missed a sweep of the Giants when rookie Ryan Sadowski, making his MLB debut, held them scoreless for six innings in a 7-0 SF win on Sunday.

Milwaukee had won the first two games of the series, 5-1 and 7-6. The win on Saturday came on Prince Fielder's clutch hit which wrapped up a 3-run 9th inning comeback.

The Twins won 2 of 3 games from the Cardinals. Glen Perkins pitched solid baseball in a 3-1 win on Friday.

After a 5-3 loss on Saturday, the Twins won Sunday, 6-2. Francisco Liriano pitched seven good innings. Justin Morneau hit a three-run homer.

For more on the weekend games, go to the team sites via MDR links.

Fielder Is Player Of Week

For the second straight week, the Brewers' Prince Fielder earned MDR Player of the Week honors.

Fielder capped another productive week at the plate with a homer and walkoff double Saturday night to beat the Giants. The first baseman was hitting .300 with 19 homers and 73 rbi going into Sunday.

Other MDR Players of the Week included:

** the Cubs' Geovany Soto, who has been hitting with power and hit a key homer in a win during the week.

** the Twins' Glen Perkins, who gave up only one run in four hits in seven innings of a 3-1 win over the Cardinals.

** the White Sox's Scott Podsednik, who continued to get on base from the leadoff spot and had four hits, including a homer, in a win over the Cubs on Saturday.

Beckham Wins It In 9th

Gordon Beckham's rbi single in the bottom of the 9th inning gave the White Sox a 8-7 win over the Cubs on the FOX Saturday Game of the Week.

Josh Fields, running for Paul Konerko, scored the winning run. Scott Podsednik went 4-5 for the Sox, including a homer and three rbi. Alexei Ramirez drove in the tying run.

Alfonso Soriano, Ryan Theriot and Andres Blanco had two hits each for the Cubs.

Sean Marshall took the loss in relief. Bobby Jenks got the win.

Go to the team sites for more extensive coverage.

Soto HR Gives Cubs Win

Geovany Soto's three-run homer in the 7th inning provided the winning runs in the Cubs' 5-4 win over the White Sox Friday.

Soto was joined in the heroes' circle by Jake Fox, who went 3-4 with a two-run homer. Randy Wells earned the win for the Cubs.

Jermaine Dye and Jim Thome hit solo homers for the Sox.

RF Milton Bradley and Cubs' manager Lou Piniella exchanged words at one point in the contest, and Bradley was pulled from the game.

Clayton Kershaw (Dodgers), Travis Snider (Jays), Brett Anderson (A's) all began the 2009 in the Major Leagues. Pitcher P.J Walters (StL) made his big league debut this year. The four participated in the 2007 MWL All-Star Game held at Kane County.

Fans of the MWL and players alike are speculating as to whom from this year's game will make it to the Majors first. The recently held game (Clinton) also marks the end of the first half of the season. Unlike the symbolic first half in the Majors, halfs do matter in the minors. Playoff spots are earned or lost in each half of the season. The Kane County Cougars(Oak) won the West Division with a 41-29 record. Cedar Rapids (Ana) took the wild card spot with a 40-30 record. Through the miracle of tie-breakers they edged out the Lumberkings (Sea) despite having ths same record.

In the East the Ft. Wayne TinCaps (SD) dominated with a 45-25 record (20-0 against south Bend and Dayton). Perennial contender West Michigan (Det) took the wildcard spot (43-27). As is usually the case each team arrived via a different route. Unlike the past couple of seasons, the Cougars combined very solid pitching performances with timely hitting. No lead seems insurmountable and they have not only done it with the long ball even though their 57 homers lead the league.

All Star Rhp Kenny Smalley has been quite successful in the rotation and the bullpen (6-3, 2.26 ERa, 1.12WHIP). While not named an All-Star, Cf Grant Desme has been great this season. ASide from catching almost every ball hit in the general vicinity, he has shown signs of power (11hr/38 rbi) and speed 24/24 SB and 49 runs (5th in the league) despite hitting "only" .278 and in the middle of the order. Ft. Wayne has been an offensive juggernaut scoring a league-leading 380 runs, .370 on base pct. and second in both hrs(56) and slugging pct. (.412)

With the return of the Brewers to the MWL only the White sox are not represented in the league. As an objective observer, one wonders why the White Sox ever left South Bend. Unlike their Central Division rivals Detroit and Minnesota who have cultivated strong fan bases in the league the Sox have once again neglected their fans. It is almost as if they are afraid to "showcase" their young talent. Either intentionally or otherwise they do everything they can to not promote their organization from top to bottom. Anyone with a strong sense of geography would understand that the Southside team should have a strong following in northern Indiana-go figure.

Meanwhile the Ryno-less Peoria Chiefs are in the thick of things, having just missed a first half playoff spot. However, MWL fans and Cubs followers have been hot on the tracks of prized-prospect Josh Vitters. The 2007 first round selection has certainly made his mark in the MWL, hitting .328 13hr/42 rbi.

Furthermore he is working diligently at third base-as he is being projected as the heir apparent to Aramis Ramirez. Note to fans; a lot can happen in the next few years. Joining Vitters on the MWL East all star team are Josh Harrison (.332 avg 14/22sb) and Kyler Burke (.291 avg and league leading 28 doubles).

Unfortunately the Chiefs seem to have the same problem as the Cubs-they rely too heavily on the home run. Having mashed 55 homers (third) and leading with a .418 slugging pct they are not among the leaders in runs scored.

Even though Brewer fans are rejoicing with the return to the MWL all things in Rattlerville are not bright and cheery. Despite a 34-36 record they never really seemed to contend for the playoffs. However, catcher-turned secondbaseman Brett Lawrie is doing quite well. The 2008 first round draft choice (16th overall) is hitting .268, 8hr/40 rbi.

The Rattlers are currently heavily stocked with Canadians (as is GM Doug Melvin's fancy). Of Chris Dennis (.314), firstbaseman Brock Kjelgaard, pitchers Jim Henderson, Kris Drabowsky and Alex Periard all hail from north of the border. For Wisconsin to compete in the second half they are going to have to improve on their .246 avg as the West is hitting heavy.

Furthermore it is very difficult to assess the 11-1 record of Dan Meadows. Ordinarily a record like that speaks for itself-win a lot more than you lose. He has done the job, splitting time in the rotation and bullpen.

Fortunately for Twins fans the first half is over. The Snappers finished the first half in last place in the West with a dismal 27-43 record. To date the highlight has to be the appearance of last year's first round draft choice -outfielder Aaron Hicks, A common trend among some of the "bright" spots is that they are all non-drafted free agents. SS Ramon Santana is hitting .326 with 5hr/31 rbi. All-Star reliever Joe Testa is 0-2. However his 2.56 ERA and 63K and 23 walks in 45.2 innings are cause for hope. Starting pitcher Brad Tippett is 5-3, 3.15 ERA. Like Testa he sports a 1.07 WHIP. The team has to improve both in pitching (4.60 ERA) and hitting .251 avg. Usually they thrive in one or the other.

The great thing about thw MWL is that it is a league of second chances. Not only does each team start the second half with a clean slate. Players advance (whether ready or not) thus opening up spots for the newly drafted/signed or present incumbents with more playing time. While some of the players may have 2-4 years of college experience or even some seasoning in instructional league ball this is really a first chance at full season exposure.

MOst casual fans are not aware of the position changes players routinely make-both in the order of development or "finding their true spot".

Either way there is sure to be some fun this Summer.

As the steroid era is supposedly at a close and "real baseball" is going to resume, organization mouthpieces and the media will be focusing on small ball and doing the little things. In theory the players should be learning those skills at Low-A ball (MWL). Thus it is interesting to see which, if any teams practice what they preach. Along those lines it should be noted that more MWL teams are attempting more stolen bases. It should also be noted that the Kernels (Angels) are leading in number of steals and likely will be the only team to stick with the plan throughout the season.

Have fun and enjoy a pulled pork sandwich, dipping dots and lemon chill!

STATEMENT REGARDING JEREMY JEFFRESS

Brewers Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Melvin issued the following statement regarding RHP Jeremy Jeffress, who
was given a 100-game suspension by Major League Baseball today after a third violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program
for a drug of abuse:

“We are obviously disappointed because Jeremy has such great Major League potential, and this is a setback in his career. We support
Major League Baseball’s drug programs and as an organization we will continue to assist Jeremy and help him with his problem as long as he wants
to help himself.”
