Midweek Notebook
Brewers
** RHP Carlos Villanueva had allowed seven runs in five innings (12.60 ERA) over four relief outings before pitching a scoreless eighth inning Sunday in Detroit.
** INF Casey McGehee has been a force for the Brewers in interleague competition. In 11 games vs. AL opponents, McGehee is batting .462 (18-for-39) with two home runs and eight RBI.
** RHP Eric Arnett, the Brewers first-round draft pick, is scheduled to make his first professional start Wednesday for the rookie club in Helena.
Cubs
** 3B Aramis Ramirez is inching toward his return to the active roster. Ramirez, who dislocated his shoulder May 8, has graduated from taking soft-toss pitches with a fungo bat to using his own bat. The next step will be live batting practice, which could come this week in Detroit or over the weekend at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago.
** 1B Derrek Lee extended his hitting streak to a personal-best 19 games. Lee has reached base safely in 29 games in a row. His hitting streak is the longest by a Cub since Alfonso Soriano hit safely in 20 straight in 2007.
** Soriano got a rest after going 1-for-5 Sunday. Hes 18-for-118 (.153) over his last 27 games and hasnt homered since June 7. Jake Fox replaced Soriano in left field, going 2-for-5, including a strikeout to end the game.
Twins
** The Twins designated pitcher Luis Ayala for assignment on Monday and called up pitcher Bobby Keppel from Class AAA Rochester to replace him in the bullpen.
** 1B Justin Morneau was out of the starting lineup on Sunday for the first time this season. Morneau hadnt missed a game since the 2007 season, when he was out for a stretch of five games after a collision at the plate against the Marlins. The full day off snapped Morneaus streak of 319 consecutive games played.
** RHP Joe Nathan has converted 24-of-27 save opportunities in interleague play and has 10 straight scoreless interleague appearances.
White Sox
** DH Jim Thome called the series with the Dodgers a measuring stick as the Sox face the team with the best record in the National League for three games, and then return to the cross-town rivalryRound 2against the Cubs this weekend.
** RF Jermaine Dye is expected back from an aggravated left calf injury. Dye hasnt started since Friday.
** 1B Paul Konerko reached another milestone in his 11-year career with the Sox, notching career RBI 1,000 on Sunday in Cincinnati. Konerko had already reached the 300-homer plateau this season.

Weekend Preview
MDR rivalries continue this weekend as the Chicago Crosstown Series Part 2 heads to the South Side.
Randy Wells will start the Friday series opener against the White Sox's Jose Contreras.
The Cubs' Ryan Dempster and Sox's Mark Buehrle will match up on Saturday. Carlos Zambrano and the Sox's John Danks are slated for Sunday.
The Brewers leave interleague play behind to entertain the Giants at Miller Park. Yovani Gallardo will start the series opener on Friday against the Giants' Matt Cain.
Seth McClung, who has filled a variety of roles in the bullpen this year, will start Saturday for the Brewers, taking what was Manny Parra's spot in the rotation.
The Twins will stay with interleague opponents, when they move south to St. Louis to take on the Brewers' rival, the Cardinals. Glen Perkins will face the Cards' Adam Wainwright in the series opener.
Briefs of the Cubs-Sox games will be posted on this site. Keep up on all weekend games by going to team web sites via MDR links. Come back here Sunday night for the Weekend Wrap.
Span Sparks Twins To Win
Denard Span returned from the DL and reached base four times to spark the Twins to a 6-4 win over the Brewers in the final game of an interleague series Thursday at Miller Park.
Span walked three times and singled, and scored three runs. Joe Crede homered for the Twins. Brendan Harris and Joe Mauer had two hits each.
Scott Baker got the win. He gave up all three of his runs in the bottom of the 6th, when Casey McGehee hit a two-run homer and Prince Fielder a solo shot.
Ryan Braun hit a solo homer off reliever Matt Guerrier in the 8th inning for the Brewers' fourth run.
Mike Burns, who was called up from the minors to start for Milwaukee, took the loss.
The Twins won five of six interleague games with the Brewers. Minnesota has won six of the last seven series with Milwaukee.
For more on Thursday's game, go to the team web sites via MDR links.
Brewers Win On Errors
Jason Kendall doubled a run home and then scored himself on two Twins' errors in the bottom of the 8th inning to give the Brewers a 4-3 win at Miller Park Wednesday.
Kendall knocked a Nick Blackburn pitch off the wall in left center to chase J.J. Hardy home with a run that tied it 3-3.
Minnesota shortstop Brendan Harris threw to the plate wildly to allow Kendall to go to third, and Blackburn, who was backing up the play, threw the ball away at third to allow Kendall to score what turned out to be the game winner.
Trevor Hoffman closed it out in the 9th to earn his 17th save. Todd Coffey got the win in relief.
Blackburn, who held the Brewers to seven hits and two runs until the 8th, took the loss.
Jason Kubel homered for the Twins. Joe Crede had a rbi double that gave Minnesota the lead at the time.
For more on the game, go to the team web sites via MDR links.
Twins Continue Dominance Over Brewers
Carlos Gomez had three hits as the Twins continued to dominate the Brewers with a 7-3 win Tuesday night at Miller Park.
Joe Crede had two hits, including a three-run double in the first inning. Justin Morneau had two doubles.
Francisco Liriano labored through five innings, but got the win. Jeff Suppan took the loss for Milwaukee.
Casey McGehee had two hits for the Brewers. Mike Cameron drove in two runs. No runs were scored in the contest after the third inning.
The Twins swept the Brewers in Minnesota in May and have dominated Milwaukee overall in interleague play.
Before the game, the Brewers placed RHP Dave Bush on the DL with an arm problem. RHP Mike Burns was called up from Nashville and will start Thursday's game against the Twins.
For more on Tuesday's game, go to the team web sites via MDR links.
