Brewers Seek Revenge Against Twins This Week

The Brewers will seek some revenge for a sweep in the Metrodome a couple weeks ago and try to snap a three-game losing streak when they host the Twins at Miller Park, starting Tuesday.

Jeff Suppan will face the Twins' Francisco Liriano in the series opener. Braden Looper will match up against Minnesota's Nick Blackburn on Wednesday.

Thursday would be Dave Bush's turn in the Brewers' starting rotation, but manager Ken Macha said he would wait until Tuesday to name a starter. Bush recently complained of fatigue after a string of ineffective starts. Scott Baker is scheduled to start for the Twins.

Brief summaries of the games will be posted for each game in the series, with links to more extensive coverage.

Weekend Wrap

The Cubs took some big steps toward the top of the NL Central by sweeping the Indians while the Brewers were swept by the Tigers in interleague play.

Chicago won the first two games of the series in Wrigley Field in walkoff fashion, making three straight wins in the last at-bat. Ryan Theriot singled home the winning run in the 10th inning of a 8-7 win on Friday. Derrek Lee had two homers for the Cubs in that game.

Andres Blanco scored the winning run on a wild pitch by former Cub Kerry Wood in the 13th inning of a 6-5 win on Saturday.

On Sunday, Lee extended his hitting streak to 18 games, as the Cubs won 6-2. Geovany Soto homered. Jake Fox had a key, two run double in the game. The Cubs broke the game open with a four-run 5th inning.

The Brewers' pitching got clobbered in 10-4 and 9-5 losses in Detroit on Friday and Saturday. The Friday game went only seven innings because of rain.

Yovani Gallardo just about matched the Tigers' Justin Verlander in a pitchers' duel on Sunday, but gave up a three-run homer to Brandon Inge for a 3-2 Detroit win.

The Brewers now trail the Cardinals by 1.5 games in the NLC, and are one game ahead of the third place Cubs.

In the AL, the White Sox took two of three from the Reds. After a 4-3 loss on Friday, the Sox got homers by Gordon Bedckham (his first), Alexei Ramirez, Scott Podsednik and A.J. Pierzynski in a 10-8 win on Saturday.

Mark Buehrle improved his record to 7-2 win a 4-1 win over the Reds on Sunday.

The Twins dropped two of three to the Astros, losing 6-5 on Saturday despite homers by Jason Kubel, Joe Mauer, Brendan Harris and Delmon Young.

They lost Sunday, 4-1, and managed only two hits. Michael Cuddyer homered for Minnesota in that contest.

Kevin Slowey won his 10th game of the season in a 5-2 win over the Astros on Friday.

For more on all the weekend games, go to the team web sites via MDR links.

Prince Is Player Of Week

Prince Fielder is having a big season, and contributed to it with a very big week.

Fielder earned MDR Player of the Week honors after raising his average to .304 with 17 homers, 67 rbi and 51 walks. The last three totals put him at or near the top of MLB hitters.

Other MDR team Players of the Week included:

** the Cubs' Derrek Lee, who after a horrible start has improved his stats to .288 with 11 homers and 35 rbi. He had a couple key homers in the Cubs' string of walkoff wins.

** the Twins' Kevin Slowey, who beat the Astros to record his 10th win of the season.

** the White Sox's Alexei Ramirez, who had some key homers during the week, including a tiebreaker in a 10-8 win over the Reds on Saturday.

Northwoods League Report

(Notes come from the NWL site at www.northwoodsleague.com)

** On a night that included four shutouts in the league, St. Cloud's Kurtis Frymier tossed the 10th no-hitter in NWL history. The third-year River Bat from Michigan State pitched the second no-no in River Bats history - in a 2-0, 7-inning win in Game 1 of a doubleheader against the La Crosse Loggers at Joe Faber Field.

** Green Bay starter Zach Varce (Portland) fanned nine Waterloo Bucks’ batters and surrendered three hits over seven innings on the hill to earn his first win of the season, with a 2-0 victory.

** Robert Brantly (UC-Riverside) had a solid night for La Crosse going 3-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, including the game winner in the 10th inning of the Loggers 5-4 win over Wisconsin. The catcher had a double and a sacrifice fly that tied the game in the 5th inning.

** Danny Miller (Minnesota State) led the Mankate MoonDogs offense in their 8-4 victory over Thunder Bay Friday. Miller singled in each of his first three plate appearances and added an RBI. He is hitting .357 (10-28) with 10 RBI and a home run over the last 10 games.

** Matt Morgan (Purdue) impressed all 5,474 in attendance at the "Duck Pond" on Friday night by striking out a season-high 10 batters over six innings of work and propelling the Mallards to a 4-1 win over South Division rival, Wisconsin.

** Mankato MoonDog Cody Fick (Evansville) is happy to be playing baseball again after missing all of 2008 from Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, a disorder which affects blood flow and nerve response to the arms due to compression in the shoulder area and can be life-threatening.

BREWERS TO UNVEIL MONUMENT HONORING

THE 1901 AMERICAN LEAGUE MILWAUKEE BREWERS

MILWAUKEE, WI – On Tuesday, at 1:00 p.m., the Milwaukee Brewers will unveil a monument that honors one of the original American League teams, the 1901 Milwaukee Brewers. The monument will sit on the plaza in front of the Miller Park Home Plate Gate. The piece was commissioned by David Stalker, a baseball historian from Watertown, Wis.

In 1900, the American League was born at a Milwaukee hotel named the Republican House. The following year, during the 1901 inaugural season for the American League, the Milwaukee Brewers were one of eight teams to participate in Major League Baseball’s “Junior Circuit.” The Brewers played their home games at Lloyd Street Grounds, which was located on the city’s north side (Lloyd Street and 16th Street). Player/Manager Hugh Duffy hit .302 that season and was later inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Wid Conroy was the team captain and Bill Reidy led the pitching staff with 16 wins.

Five Wisconsin natives were members of that Brewers team, including Ed Bruyette of Manawa, Davy Jones of Cambria and George McBride of Milwaukee, all of whom made their Major League debut that year. Pitchers Pink Hawley of Beaver Dam and Pete Husting of Mayville also contributed. In 1902, the Brewers moved to St. Louis and became the Browns, but the league they helped form is still in existence today. After spending 52 years in St. Louis, the Browns moved to Baltimore in 1954 and became the Baltimore Orioles.

Midweek Notebook

Brewers

** RHP Carlos Villanueva had allowed seven runs in five innings (12.60 ERA) over four relief outings before pitching a scoreless eighth inning Sunday in Detroit.

** INF Casey McGehee has been a force for the Brewers in interleague competition. In 11 games vs. AL opponents, McGehee is batting .462 (18-for-39) with two home runs and eight RBI.

** RHP Eric Arnett, the Brewers’ first-round draft pick, is scheduled to make his first professional start Wednesday for the rookie club in Helena.

Cubs

** 3B Aramis Ramirez is inching toward his return to the active roster. Ramirez, who dislocated his shoulder May 8, has graduated from taking soft-toss pitches with a fungo bat to using his own bat. The next step will be live batting practice, which could come this week in Detroit or over the weekend at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago.

** 1B Derrek Lee extended his hitting streak to a personal-best 19 games. Lee has reached base safely in 29 games in a row. His hitting streak is the longest by a Cub since Alfonso Soriano hit safely in 20 straight in 2007.

** Soriano got a rest after going 1-for-5 Sunday. He’s 18-for-118 (.153) over his last 27 games and hasn’t homered since June 7. Jake Fox replaced Soriano in left field, going 2-for-5, including a strikeout to end the game.

Twins

** The Twins designated pitcher Luis Ayala for assignment on Monday and called up pitcher Bobby Keppel from Class AAA Rochester to replace him in the bullpen.

** 1B Justin Morneau was out of the starting lineup on Sunday for the first time this season. Morneau hadn’t missed a game since the 2007 season, when he was out for a stretch of five games after a collision at the plate against the Marlins. The full day off snapped Morneau’s streak of 319 consecutive games played.

** RHP Joe Nathan has converted 24-of-27 save opportunities in interleague play and has 10 straight scoreless interleague appearances.

White Sox

** DH Jim Thome called the series with the Dodgers “a measuring stick” as the Sox face the team with the best record in the National League for three games, and then return to the cross-town rivalry—Round 2—against the Cubs this weekend.

** RF Jermaine Dye is expected back from an aggravated left calf injury. Dye hasn’t started since Friday.

** 1B Paul Konerko reached another milestone in his 11-year career with the Sox, notching career RBI 1,000 on Sunday in Cincinnati. Konerko had already reached the 300-homer plateau this season.

Weekend Preview

MDR rivalries continue this weekend as the Chicago Crosstown Series Part 2 heads to the South Side.

Randy Wells will start the Friday series opener against the White Sox's Jose Contreras.

The Cubs' Ryan Dempster and Sox's Mark Buehrle will match up on Saturday. Carlos Zambrano and the Sox's John Danks are slated for Sunday.

The Brewers leave interleague play behind to entertain the Giants at Miller Park. Yovani Gallardo will start the series opener on Friday against the Giants' Matt Cain.

Seth McClung, who has filled a variety of roles in the bullpen this year, will start Saturday for the Brewers, taking what was Manny Parra's spot in the rotation.

The Twins will stay with interleague opponents, when they move south to St. Louis to take on the Brewers' rival, the Cardinals. Glen Perkins will face the Cards' Adam Wainwright in the series opener.

Briefs of the Cubs-Sox games will be posted on this site. Keep up on all weekend games by going to team web sites via MDR links. Come back here Sunday night for the Weekend Wrap.

Span Sparks Twins To Win

Denard Span returned from the DL and reached base four times to spark the Twins to a 6-4 win over the Brewers in the final game of an interleague series Thursday at Miller Park.

Span walked three times and singled, and scored three runs. Joe Crede homered for the Twins. Brendan Harris and Joe Mauer had two hits each.

Scott Baker got the win. He gave up all three of his runs in the bottom of the 6th, when Casey McGehee hit a two-run homer and Prince Fielder a solo shot.

Ryan Braun hit a solo homer off reliever Matt Guerrier in the 8th inning for the Brewers' fourth run.

Mike Burns, who was called up from the minors to start for Milwaukee, took the loss.

The Twins won five of six interleague games with the Brewers. Minnesota has won six of the last seven series with Milwaukee.

For more on Thursday's game, go to the team web sites via MDR links.

Brewers Win On Errors

Jason Kendall doubled a run home and then scored himself on two Twins' errors in the bottom of the 8th inning to give the Brewers a 4-3 win at Miller Park Wednesday.

Kendall knocked a Nick Blackburn pitch off the wall in left center to chase J.J. Hardy home with a run that tied it 3-3.

Minnesota shortstop Brendan Harris threw to the plate wildly to allow Kendall to go to third, and Blackburn, who was backing up the play, threw the ball away at third to allow Kendall to score what turned out to be the game winner.

Trevor Hoffman closed it out in the 9th to earn his 17th save. Todd Coffey got the win in relief.

Blackburn, who held the Brewers to seven hits and two runs until the 8th, took the loss.

Jason Kubel homered for the Twins. Joe Crede had a rbi double that gave Minnesota the lead at the time.

For more on the game, go to the team web sites via MDR links.

Twins Continue Dominance Over Brewers

Carlos Gomez had three hits as the Twins continued to dominate the Brewers with a 7-3 win Tuesday night at Miller Park.

Joe Crede had two hits, including a three-run double in the first inning. Justin Morneau had two doubles.

Francisco Liriano labored through five innings, but got the win. Jeff Suppan took the loss for Milwaukee.

Casey McGehee had two hits for the Brewers. Mike Cameron drove in two runs. No runs were scored in the contest after the third inning.

The Twins swept the Brewers in Minnesota in May and have dominated Milwaukee overall in interleague play.

Before the game, the Brewers placed RHP Dave Bush on the DL with an arm problem. RHP Mike Burns was called up from Nashville and will start Thursday's game against the Twins.

For more on Tuesday's game, go to the team web sites via MDR links.
