A Look Back: Via Cards and Autographs
Old School Collectibles, the sister web site to Midwest Diamond Report, is offering readers and collectors a chance to take A Look Back by buying some vintage cards and autographs.
The cards -- which includes 1953 cards of Jackie Robinson, Ted Williams and other greats -- are available for purchase online and at the OSC store space on the second floor of the Antique Center on Third Street in La Crosse.
Some of the cards go back to the 1940s. Others are from the 1950s and 60s.
The autographs include 11 Hall of Famers, ranging from Branch Rickey to Charlie Gehringer. Other popular players such as Enos Slaughter, Mickey Owen and Joe Garagiola are included.
We'd like to sell the HOF group as a full collection, but will consider selling individual cards from it, and are selling the other players' cards individually.
Again, these autographs are displayed at the La Crosse OSC store space. You also can inquire about them by leaving a message on the message board at: www.oldschoolcollectibles.com or by sending an email to gregghof@aol.com.
Independent Leagues Winding Down
Regular season play in the Northern League and Frontier League is entering its final week.
Fargo-Moorhead holds a sizeable lead in the Northern League. Kalamazoo had clinched the Eastern Division crown in the Frontier League. Windy City and Southern Illinois were tied for first in the Western Division.
Playoffs in both leagues start next week. You can keep up on action in the Northern and Frontier via links in the right hand column of MDR. Briefs also will be posted when champions are determined in both leagues.
Big Z Is Player Of Week
The Cubs' Carlos Zambrano ended an 0-for-August streak in a big way last week and in the process earned the MDR Player of the Week honor.
Zambrano allowed only one run in seven innings of a 3-2 win over the Reds and hit a 420-foot homer to help his own cause. He now has a 13-5 record, four homers for the season and a seven-game hitting streak.
Other MDR team Players of the Week included:
** the Brewers' J.J. Hardy, who had a couple big homers in some Milwaukee wins and contributed at the plate and at shortstop.
** the Twins" Glen Perkins, who improved his record to 11-3 with a five-hit, eight-inning performance in a 9-0 win over the Angels.
** the White Sox's Alexei Ramirez, who extended his on-base streak to 15 games. He hit .317 during that streak and now is being included in discussions about the AL Rookie of the Year.

Major League Baseball demonstrates youth focus: engaging youth in game critical to sports success
Here is what the national media is reporting about Major League Baseball and Bud Seligs dedication to enhancing youth participation and interest in baseball through the Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) Program.
DailyBreeze.com (Los Angeles), August 10, 2008: Its a hit for inner-city kids by Nick Green
· Until this month, 14-year-old CBasthon Alvarado had never traveled farther west from his inner city Detroit neighborhood than Oklahoma. But, after spending the last week in the South Bay with the rest of his Detroit teammates at the Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities World Series, Alvarado is seeing his world through different eyes.
· It has opened my eyes to different cultures, better players, said Alvarado, the youngest player on his team.
· I got friends now in Tampa. I got friends in Cleveland now. It has opened a lot of new doors. Which is pretty much the point behind the RBI World Series, a Major League Baseball program that operates in more than 200 cities in six countries with about 100,000 participating players.
· Baseball is the carrot, obviously, said David James, director of RBI. But were trying to impart life lessons on these kids.
· RBI, founded in 1989 and taken over by MLB in 1991, is intended not only to increase interest in baseball, but encourage academic achievement and teach the value of teamwork.
· In addition, MLB has drafted more than 170 RBI graduates, including 19 in 2007 alone.
ESPN.com, August 12, 2008: RBI program a definite success by Curtis Granderson
· The RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner cities) World Series was held recently and for the third consecutive season, the team from Detroit won the boys championship in the Junior Division.
· The RBI program gives kids in inner cities the chance to participate in baseball and also helps them with important life skills.
· The RBI program has allowed nearly 100,000 kids annually a chance to get to experience not only this great game of baseball, but also to get to travel while doing it.
· The RBI program also helps young girls out as well, and they have a 19-and-under softball league that also competes throughout the United States and gives girls the same experiences.
· Programs like these are a must. They help expose kids to teamwork and leadership, and also help kids to stay out of trouble while being faced with some of the challenges of being a kid.
· The Rays Carl Crawford began playing in the RBI program and has mentioned that the program helped pave the way for him to get to the point where he is today.
Los Angeles Wave, August 14, 2008: RBI awards a scholarship to Hart by Wave Staff Report
· Major League Baseball Charities and KPMG LLP, the audit tax and advisory firm, awarded six $5,000 scholarships to Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities participants to help with their college educations.
· Financial need, academic achievement, leadership skills and community service were criteria for the award. Each recipient may renew until their education is complete for up to four years.
· The RBI program helps open doors of opportunity through sport, mentoring and education, Tim Flynn, chairman and chief executive of KPMG LLP, said. These deserving RBI scholarship recipients are truly all-stars, and we congratulate each of them on their accomplishment.
Cleveland.com, August 7, 2008: Hustling along: RBI program gives inner-city youths chance to travel, play baseball by Bill Lubringer
· John Young, a former major leaguer and scout, launched the Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities program 20 years ago in Los Angeles.
· The lack of black players in what was once fertile baseball ground bothered him. He noticed that most kids quit playing around age 13 to 16, and that a lack of money and community support were big reasons why.
· So he lassoed Major League Baseball and other sponsors, and RBI took off.
· Its provided much-needed instruction and stability for inner-city players, including such famous alums as Milwaukees CC Sabathia and Bostons Coco Crips- both former Indians.
· If theyre playing baseball, theyre off the streets, said John Carter, executive director of the Cleveland Baseball Federation, which feeds the RBI teams with talent.
· Many of the players parents and relatives are tagging along at their own expense. I wouldnt miss it for the world, said Connie Frederick, Adam Superman Singers mom. These boys are going to be so in awe over what theyre going to get to do.

BREWERS SURPASS 3 MILLION TICKETS SOLD
MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Brewers this morning reached 3 million total tickets sold for the 2008 season.
The Brewers currently have sold out 21 consecutive home games and have 37 sellouts on the season overall. Both marks are all-time highs for the franchise.
Quite simply, 3 million fans is an incredible number and all credit goes to the fans who have demonstrated their support all season long, said Brewers Executive Vice President Rick Schlesinger. We thank each and every one of the fans who have come through the Miller Park gates this season and hope that they take as much pride in this record as we do.
Through 65 home games, the Brewers average attendance is 37,994, which ranks 9th best in all of Major League Baseball. The teams previous high for home attendance in one season was set last year at 2,869,144.
Tickets remain for all future home games, but advance purchase is encouraged. Individual tickets may be purchased online at brewers.com, the Miller Park Box Office, all tickets.com outlets and by calling 414-902-4000 or 800-933-7890.
TICKET AVAILABILITY NOTICE: The current streak of sellouts at Miller Park is expected to continue through Mondays game against the Mets, and advance sales for Tuesdays game could possibly extend the streak through that night.
For fans looking for the best availability on the homestand, the sellout streak will likely end on Wednesday as a large number of tickets remain in most seating categories. There is also good availability for all three games of the Reds series (September 8-10).
