I think it would be wonderful to have all these things together. I have two problems with this idea though. Like Robyn in Comment 7, my eyes haven't coped well with years of online study. Maybe the e-backpack will have to be a reasonable size so that our eyes can see the keys that we use to enter information. Maybe it will be voice activated.
The second thing, it would also have to be a reasonable size so that we don't lose it. I know, sounds dumb and I wish it wasn't so, but my husband NEVER loses his keys while mind regularly play hide and seek with me.

This aspect particularly appeals to me. I find that reading is an investment of time and I find it frustrating when the ending of a book is unsatisfactory. I'm almost resentful of the time that book has taken of my life. The ability to read different endings and choose the one that appeals is a definite plus. I often have this conversation with my pupils too.
I agree with Pat, it would be another tool that could be used to interest students in literature.

Several years ago I attended a conference where we were told that the e-book was on its way. Personally I hoped it would come quickly, particularly in relation to textbooks. The advantages would be huge, compact to carry and constantly updated. I haven't seen this impact on Australia yet. Is it happening elsewhere? It seems such a good idea.

I'm Bev Kurkowski, a teacher-librarian at Hillbrook Anglican School in Brisbane, Australia. My work seems it be shifting more and more in the direction of technology and I struggle to maintain the notion of "using a balance of resources" when working with our students. I'm wondering if this conference will change that.

Why couldn't we read children books on our television? Digital television is on its way. It should be possible to link your e-book device to your television, no?

I hope the publisher will take care then of archiving the old editions.

In my opinion, hardware is crucial. Much of what has been suggested, is already possible on the internet: wiki's, blogs, multimedia. There is ever more free content available. The problem is: we can't read or do this (comfortably) on the train, in our bed, on the beach,... Once we can, evolution will go very fast.

Here, a firm is promoting an 'electronic library' for use in higher education. To make this library more 'acceptable', the model copies the classical library: the library buys one (or more) copies of a book. Users can borrow this book, but only one user at a time. So if a student is reading this title, no one else can access it. I think they do this to reduce the costs of the license. But at the same time, they give up many of the advantages of electronic books!
The use of virtual learning environments is stimulating the discussion about electronic (text) books. But the discussion is mostly about collections and pricing.
I think we have to wait for good hardware, such as Doug describes in his paper.

Like the article (thanks Doug) ... but does have a USA-centric feel about it rather than an International one .. with mostly references to USA and little (no?) mention of cultures other than Ronald McDonalds .. (unless I missed them)

But what I do think is magic is that the readers/contributors are in fact changing that through the comments, experiences and sharing being added ....

This begs the question
Is an ebook
(1)a personal device belonging to a single individual" .... or is it
(2)simply a window to an individuals data/resources that are kept somewhere online.

I vote for option (2) ... which means that a student can pick up any ebook and log on with their individual ID/PW ... hence if there is any mointoring necessary it would be done remotely/online.

Lots of other advantages to this approach ...
(a)if an ebook breaks then it's no big deal .... just pick up one of the spares (from the library staff?)
(b)ebooks would be cheaper
(c)what else ?

Main disadvantage is that it requires an internet connection (wire or wireless) ... not so suitable for third world countries at the moment.

Am not sure if this is encouraging an "us" and "them" philosophy with a war to be staged between the two ... after all there is never any politics practiced in schools.

It's the age old debate of the Librarian being seen as the custodian of the books ... so once the books go then so does he/she.

Possibly it's just semantics ... how about changing the label "Librarian" to something else ... e.g. the "PIMS" (Professional Information Manager in School) ... any other suggestions?

For me the most powerful tool to shape the future in any school is the "School Development Plan" which is a "roadmap" for the future .... I wonder how many school libraries are mentioned in the "roadmap" ... because if it is not then library staff (plus school colleagues) should be fighting to get it in there ... even if the item simply says "2005-2006 Review the future development of the School Library" ... at least you'll raise the profile, debate the issues and hopefully know exactly where the library is destined.

Also not sure about "And we will continue to provide staff development opportunities in information technologies."

Should it be Information Management Skills and Information Literacy rather the "Technologies"

Is this a little like saying that 'Teaching all the Library Users to read' .. is the job of the librarian. (in fact I know a lot of librarians do actually do this out of the goodness of their hearts rather than because it is in their job description)

UMMmm ... seems to be focussing on "The Library" being just the traditional space surrounded by walls.

I suspect Libraries will evolve into something 'more' in the future.

This may be the same debate as 'What will the School of the Future Look Like" .. ebooks (physical) are possibly a very small cog in the grand design of education in the future.

It's interesting that this definition of the ebook seems to be focussed on hardware ... it's not actually what I expected from the title.
I did expect something which also may have covered opportunities like WikiBooks in order to encourage co-operative projects between students.

The question of health risks associated with computer use is a valid one. I am not sure we KNOW for sure what will happen given long term exposure.

Personally I look forward to when the large plasma/LCD flat screens drop down in price ... so I can then afford to install one on the ceiling above the bed .... by then it will, of course, be voice controlled (no keyboard) be linked to TV/Radio/internet/computer ... and also be able to read back to me whatever is displayed.

Biggest health risk might be that it falls on you ;-(

This also begs the question of the physical ebooks being read visually ... or will they just read the text to you in a voice chosen from a menu.

Will the skills of reading and writing only be practised by historians in the year 3,000 ?

Doug ... agree entirely .... there is usually no one black&white solution to most challenges in education.

Generally a 'blended' approach to whatever is being discussed.

BUT a couple of BIG advantages to the ebook just being a tool to access material online is:
- it would probably be cheaper as not requiring a large storage device.
- a student could pick up ANY ebookand start working ... so if they broke their main one then it was no big deal.

Something that took my mind over in the few hours sleep I didn't have last night was - Boys have found to embrace technology differently to girls in schools - usually anything on a computer improves boys motivation and interest and possibly skills - does this mean that e-books may help in the boys and reading (or lack of) problems? Could this be the remedy we have been waiting for?

Hi Chris - those wikibooks look interesting and fun to work with - certainly pushes the boundaries of digital books and encourages creativity AND gives a completely new slant on this topic. What other cutting edge innovations might we be able to look forward to in the form of something new that we might all find useful.

I love the description of the library being a place of "sensuality and power", in a school situation I hope they aren't making love bhind the stacks, but if you think of many movies, there is always a'love' relationship or meeting which leads to a long relationship which begins in the library - "The Truman Show", "Ten Things I hate about you" " Notting Hill' - more a book shop, In other movies libraries are places which hold the secrets to unleash powers and lead to great adventures - "National Treasure" 'Indiana Jones". to name just a few, the feelings evoked when a movie character finds an old book, and blows the dust off it to symbolise how old it is and how important it is and that will probably hold some great secrets - it just won't have the same effect when an old e-book is found - they will have to work on getting out old technology to be able to access what is in there. I do think people love books too much to let these go..but then .....

I had another thought - will old e-books be able to be accessed with new technology or will we lose data as new technology is upgraded? This happens with documents which haven't been opened or used for just a few years - will history and literature be lost as it is replaced over the years??

I really like reading a book on paper - it isn't just the text that I read - it is the smell, (the toxins in new paper- just smell fabulous!- even old musty books offer a aura of intrigue) the feel of the paper which is soothing, the fact that I can bend it back, physically see how much I have read and how long to the end of the story to work out who did it..the physical act of holding a slab of paper and turning a page - the sound of this as you close one page after another. The colour of the page, the size of the font and the type of font all matter to the aid the visual appeal of a book. Closing a physical book on a satisfactory ending mimicks life and we close one chapter to go onto another - physically shutting a book is a definite action of closure and helps us to move on to a new experience.

Reading a physical book is a whole sensory experience and I really hope it doesn't go - it is part of life.

It has been researched and shown that it takes up to 60% longer to read text from a computer screen - if ebooks are like little computers, or even delivered on computers does this mean that we will read less because it takes longer - or will these ' improvements' help to reduce this.

Something else that concerns me is the radiation from computer screens - although small we are bombarded with toxins everyday in the form of pollution, poisons, poor quality food, additives etc - reading more from computers will just add to this. Not sure I want to go this way - no matter how high the resolution or advanced everything is.

This teaching of skills needs to be in context with the teachers of the students working with the TL or SL and making it meaningful - why do the teachers need to send the kids to the library if they have ebooks? Why can't the TL come to the classroom to work with the kids in a familiar environment in collaboration with the teacher - if the school is set up right the students could access all they needed vis a school network and the TL could be a facilitator in the classroom - or even in other places.

Why use a webpage to keep your websites and e-books - what's wrong with the library catalogue with searchable subject headings and live internet access? Then it is really streamlining your resources and making them come together in one - treating all resources with the same respect.

But how hard will it be when it hits my head whenI fall asleep reading at night? Will I be able to fall asleep and still have it in the bed in the morning without suffering severe pains through out the night??

I have had experience of the ebooks allowing me to break out of not only my school surrounds, but to allow me to access books that were not available in the country I was living.

The Hong Kong libraries subscribe to NetLibrary (free to all library card holders, available onlineafter a short set up stage) and it not only allowed me to access an important chapter of a book that was not available in Hk, I was able to search far more efficiently than if it was a regular book - using 'find' - I love digital resources because they reduce the amount of time I spend cruising - I can cut right to the chase and get what I need and get out!

Hmm- sort of like a fast food library where we can all get fat on the same thing but not taking into account our own personal requirements or interests - this is what Librarians do so well - asking the right questions of the client, to find the right information to make them satisfied for a lot longer than a few minutes until they are hungry for more because they were only given sugar to eat by the fast information giants.

I can see that the e-book can be more like digital sharing - like the movie on demand. The advantage of physical spaces is that the children can be contained, protection from the elements and control of the environment.

I would love to build a library where the school has spokes coming out of the library - the library is literally the centre of the school and is a space that needs to be walked through to move from one place to another (much like the duty free stores in airports - where you HAVE to go through so you might just be tempted) - with self checkouts at each exit point - I wonder if this would be something that would encourage more students to feel that libraries were part of life?

This would be just fab - animated pictures, Harry Potter playing quidditch in the background, hearing the school sonf being sung - but then - isn't the best bit about reading a book being able to use your imagination to personalise the story? This is why I believe that so many time we are disappointed with a movie make of a book - our imagination can do so much more than the directors of a movie can even conceive.

I love this aspect of electronic texts - the searching made easier, and if I could scribble notes in the corners or have 'stickies' come up when I read a book it makes non fiction so much more useful. - there would have to be a function to 'save' a sticky for when you borrowed or used the book again.
