What codecs do you need for this?

I can't get audio with totem vlc or mplayer so I'm pretty sure I'm just missing and audio codec - however totem claims that there is no audio stream so that makes it kinda hard to figure out.

I have the same problem.
But synaptic tells me that I have the codec allready installed.

I have the latest DivX and neither Windows media player nor Winamp work.

Try downloading the latest version of Quicktime if you have Windows or a Mac - does that help? It plays fine on Quicktime (and Realplayer, ew) on my machine.

oh pls - u expect us to play this on a *windows* machine, with Quicktime??? Whta about linux??

"mplayer -vc divx4" doesn't work, neither does "mplayer -vc ffcyuv".

To make it clear, I just host videos on LegalTorrents - I don't encode them :) However, I've contacted the original contributor to see if it can be re-encoded in a more Linux-friendly format.

In Windows the Quicktime player plays go_open
In Linux I had to install the VLC player.

simonc, just an update. It turns out that the thing can be played on linux after all!! Just that my distro's provided mplayer doesn't quite cut it after all.. Just as a test, I tried playing a file with an mplayer that I compiled some time ago on another machine, and guess what? It worked!! Sorry for all the trouble caused... My apologies...

I am the guy responsible for the encoding. My apologies for your woes. We really did some detailed research before we encoded and tried to compromise on something that was both good quality and sufficiently open to work on most/all platforms.

We thought mpeg-4 with mp4 container sounded right. This is the codec known as "libavcodec mpeg-4". Compatible with DivX 4 and DivX 5 players and introduced by the ffmpeg open-source project, it's an incredibly fast encoding engine, now Altivec optimized, and also one of the highest quality MPEG-4 codecs around, constantly improved. This is 'true' MPEG4, as audio track is AAC.

Yes, on Linux we have also experienced problems with Totems movie player but a new installation of VLC on our Ubuntu box worked fine. Mplayer is a little more finicky as you need to get the (win) codecs and manually put them in the right place (as I am lead to understand). On FreeBSD we have managed to get this working fine.

On Windows - as previously mentioned - real as well as QT free players can work. On OS X mplayer, VLC and QT works.

Any other ideas for encoding? What works best?

hey, no problem aLan!! I'm glad that u even bothered to respond.

Regarding the trick with mplayer, I am playing around with the compilation options now, but I dont think it has anything to do with the w32 codecs... Reason being the messages that MPlayer displays when it hits a hitch. (And I've had to chance to compare this to the output messages as displayed by MPlayer when it runs fine). It's more to do with the version of the faad audio decoder used by MPlayer!!

Specifically, during the "./configure" phase of mplayer, we should *NOT* use the '--enable-external-faad' option *IF* we are still using libfaad2 2.0. libfaad2 2.1 BETA which is bundled with the current version of MPlayer (1.0-pre7) is ok though.

I have tested rebuilding MPlayer from my current "problem" config, with not much significant changes save the version of the faad2 codec used. It's worked! - when using the 2.1 BETA codec...

As I speak, I am rebuilding MPlayer again, but with 2.0 of the codec. And yes!! guess what?? the problem reappears again with libfaad2 2.0...

Conclusion?? Use something later than libfaad2 *2.0* - should work. Of course, for my case, I can only vouch for using 2.1 BETA.

When I first tried to watch these film I had no sound. I tried Kaffeine, gxine, kaboodle, RealPlayer, Mplayer and Helix.
I tried to install all sorts of different codecs but still no sound.
When I finally tried VLC the sound eventually worked.
Running Debian Sarge.

There are problems with faad2 and some aac encoded files and it looks like either the cvs snapshot that mplayer uses or its own local changes have gone some way towards fixing them, but it's still not great. Encoding the audio as mp3 would have been less troublesome perhaps.

I've had the same problem with mp4s from archive.org, which often do contain aac audio even though I read somewhere on their site that they always use mp3.

It's too bad that this is encoded in a way that makes it difficult to play on Linux. I'm using a standard Debian Sarge, and finding it very difficult. Kind of embarrassing when I've told people this is something they will want to watch because it sings the praises of free software, and then I can't show it to them. :(

me and my friends are invited by a certain Lauren Dione saying she is the hr manager of canadian cruises. she is inviting people in a group no less than five to go to canada. so far she hasn't asked any money yet. she gave an email address to forward our docs to. she said its the canadian immigration address but its a yahoo address so i know its a scam. anyway, after sending the email to that yahoo address, MR. JOHN BROWN responded with an attached doc to fill up ( TO RYK: is this the same process you got?) anyone out there who have the same case?

Recent I recieved an email from a certain Rose Grand,she introduce herself as a Manager for OMNI Grand Hotel(Montreal)Stated that the Hotel and management is currently hiring 20 more people (skilled and unskilled for posible job seekers abroad(canada)So certainly I did pay attention to her mail and I reply back asking all the necesarry requirements needed,After a day I got what i needed from her and Surely i was really amazed of the Salary offered,(it's really huge)raging from $3,500-$8,500.In addition I started texting all posible people in my circle to send me their passport,so I can forward it to Her(Ms.Grand)because it is one of her requirements.And to make the story short,my inbox was flooded with passports for posible applicants.I never doubted that this might be a scam or something since she has given me all the info and clearly answered what I needed to know.
Just a few hours ago,A firend of mine notify me that they called OMNI hotel to verify,their was none job opening,no Such person working in this hotel.
I don't get the logic here,what will this person (Rose Grand<Rose Lincon,Rose Peters..and so many aliases )will get out of this?is the management of OMNI hotel aware?

I happen to be one of the people who received a job offer from Rose Grand and my question was on the Canadian Immigration Department email address, phones and fax numbers she gave me. Are all these things fake. Has ever anybody tried to contact the Canadian Immigration with these phone and fax numbers and what was the response? Is she a real spammer who wants to dupe me? Does the Coordinators Tourist Department exist and do they charge people from Africa and Asia US$215 so that they can give you a Clearance and Approval letter? I received a 72Hours order from them to pay the amount or else they would put my file in the pending list. For the past 2 months I have been running around sourcing for the money so that I could send it to the Tourist Coordinators Department, now I have to think twice. All this time I have been asking myself the question that, if Rose Grand says that Omni Hotels (Where she says she is the manager) are able to pay for your ticket and visa processing why cant they just pay for the US$215 for me then I would pay them back as soon as I get there. Surely I want to believe beyond reasonable doubt that these people are really internet frauds and cons. Please put more messages so that we really know who these people are.

I received the same email from Rose blah blah blah! I saw her ad in expatriates.com and really thought it was real. But after receiving her emails, I realized when I googled the Hotel, how could it be true, if it's a 5* hotel, how come they don't have an email of their own for this, if you notice, she's been using yahoo and myway email accts.

I have asked a friend to check this out for me, she's in Montreal at the moment and at the same time I emailed Omni Montreal hotel for this.

Dear all,i also gotten Rose Grand's mails.i did all that she asked and even the immigration bureau but when it came to canadain coordinators,the issue of money came in.me and my group are supposed tp pay $105 each to the coordinators for approval letters since we are not canadians and we can't be screened there iin their offices.

At least i have to save my 105$ for my tuition since money is hard to come by in Africa.
