Fear not, my friend. We always have good directions!!!!! And you can recognize Jeb by his drawing on Meet Team Batgirl.

And we're okay, for now, on the web stuff--my guy thinks he can fix it! If there are problems, I'll let you know.

I mean its a very cute drawing of you in meet team batgirl but not highly recognizable lol

what kind of message board do you need for bat-girl.com for your game threads?? does it need to be in a certain language if not i can find you one that might be easy to set up?
Christina  247
05-18-2005 11:03 PM ET (US)

Yes. As soon as my web guy does the upgrades, which he says he'll do in the next couple of days, we're going to try to move it back. If they don't work, we can't move it until the next release of Movable Type, in July, but we're thinking this will work!
SaraZ  240
05-18-2005 10:56 PM ET (US)
Batgirl, are there any plans to move the game thread back to bat-girl.com? I know this is the least of your worries, but I can't access QuickTopic from work, so I don't ever get to read the game thread until late, late at night. (A very critical problem, don't you think?)

there was a great article on him in the Toronto Sun about a month ago. I don't remember all of it, but he is, apparently, fun to watch and quite a character. I think he takes a bit of shit for his sunglasses, but it's less attitude than it is eccentricity.

I went to TWO! It was that series at the end of April, the one that we swept even though we mostly played like ass-crap. Plus, it was the coldest it's ever been, or at least close, in K.C. that week, so the games were a bit miserable. But even miserable Twins baseball is better than no Twins baseball at all.
Shaun  230
05-18-2005 10:42 PM ET (US)
Well Sara, you should be able to get decent seats to that game. I haven't made it up there yet this year, need to find a day that works.

Uh-oh, Batgirl.

Shaun, I do love IKEA. It's all very cheap, which works well for poor kids such as myself.

I do think I'll try to make it to the last Giants game. I haven't been up to the Dome yet this spring -- the only games I've seen so far were in Kansas City.
kafumbly  224
05-18-2005 10:37 PM ET (US)
they just said on 'CCO that Crain is a converted shortstop... is that what it takes to make an awesome pitcher? Johan K and Joe Nathan were also originally shortstops.

hmmm...

Can't argue with that, Batgirl.

Cuddy's on WCCO now. He's adorable. I'm considering elevating him to Boyfriend #1 status, especially if he keeps his May form and doesn't revert to April.

Just because Gardy or Sid say it, doesn't make it so. I hope I don't come off like a jerk, but I believe I'm right - and sticking up for it. Someone's got to stick up for rookies who get no love.
Nick  203
05-18-2005 10:24 PM ET (US)

I think Bartlett will be back - and not long from now - but I have a feeling that Gardy sees more of the mental standing of his players than we do. He wouldn't have switched if he wasn't concerned.

and man... do I love to watch this man pitch.. makes my mouth dry.
alskntwnsfn  201
05-18-2005 10:23 PM ET (US)
Nick, I don't want to be a jerk... but you're wrong. He's had a better May than April.
April: .674 OPS
May: .710 OPS

I have no problem with the veep doing a king and his court thing, just him and the chairman and no bat fielding one time.

Nick  196
05-18-2005 10:21 PM ET (US)
Alskn, I don't think anyone really doubts that Bartlett is a better hitter. But he's been in a hitting slump for what seems like a long time, which is probably tougher on a rookie than a veteran. I can see the logic in him riding the pine for a bit.
kafumbly  195
05-18-2005 10:20 PM ET (US)
I want to see Joe field a bat again.

heh, not really. ;)
alskntwnsfn  194
05-18-2005 10:20 PM ET (US)
Sorry to get all statsy on you guys...
AL SS: .261/.319/.395/.714
Bartlett: .242/.310/.374/.684
Castro: .217/.265/.283/.548
Those don't lie. Bartlett's doing okay compared the league and better that Castro... at the plate anyway.

They need to mic up Newmie more often.

Let's go, VP!
Franorama  190
05-18-2005 10:17 PM ET (US)
I don't think a guy who will stick in the majors is so easily crushed. He's a rookie and he's slumping. He seems to be handling it well. He will get through it.
Cliffjumper  189
05-18-2005 10:17 PM ET (US)
Per ESPN, Mr. Bonds is now on a 24hr IV antibiotic to fight his staph infection.

Doesn't look like we'll seem him hit the baggy this summer.
kafumbly  188
05-18-2005 10:15 PM ET (US)
I bought $10 binoculars, and it's great fun to peer into the dugout and watch the guys with their crazy handshakes and see them goofing around.

Two straight nights of pure ugliness out of the 2 spot.
alskntwnsfn  186
05-18-2005 10:14 PM ET (US)
If I were him, that would crush me. He's been decent in the field, all that we asked of him. He's also hitting better than Castro (the stats don't lie) and about equal to Guzman last year... and he's slumping, so yeah, I'd be upset if I were him and they benched me or sent me down. He's not doing THAT bad.
CapitalBabsPerson was signed in when posted  185
05-18-2005 10:13 PM ET (US)
don't put this in the conspiracy category but my guess on the change in primary player between Bartlett and Castro probably has more to do with maturity and mental experience.

I think that Bartlett was letting the situation get to him - an easy thing to happen for a young player - so Gardy is going with the guy who has more experience for now.

I love all our boys and like the fact that we have enough depth to handle these situations because they do happen.

Isn't it great to see the guys goofing off in the dugout and having a good time?? Baseball should ALWAYS be enjoyed.
Nick  184
05-18-2005 10:12 PM ET (US)
I agree, kafumbly, that LNP is good in the #2 slot.

Nice to see Rivas and Castro having a great time in the dugout.
Shaun  183
05-18-2005 10:12 PM ET (US)
Hey Sara, not too bad. You?

I think they said it 3 cents for every $20, so that's a lot of IKEA! Of course, the Mall could pile up the spending.

kafumbly  180
05-18-2005 10:11 PM ET (US)
LNP is good in the #2 spot, though. he gets on base and/or moves the runner over. I like him batting second.
alskntwnsfn  179
05-18-2005 10:10 PM ET (US)
That play is in no way proof Castro should be our starting shortstop... need to pick your logic better.
Nick  178
05-18-2005 10:10 PM ET (US)
Ok, THAT's why Castro should be in there in the late innings of close games, regardless of whether he starts! And I think Cordel said a bad word there.

I just don't understand always having the 2B or SS bat second. It's so... irrational.
alskntwnsfn  177

Hey, Shaun, how's it going?

I just thought of the perfect amendment to the stadium plan. If it passes, I vow to come up to the Cities and immediately spend every dollar to my name at IKEA. That should drum up at least, um, well, at least close to $1 for the stadium.

Sara, what's up?

I am not a Minnesotan either, but being in Wisconsin I firsthand saw the fight by the Brewers to get what became Miller Park. It was quite a battle, the legislation passing by one vote (and that legislator was recalled and lost his seat). They tax a 5 county area around Milwaukee, to the amount of 1/10 of 1%. When I am in Milwaukee, I never notice that miniscule amount of tax that goes to pay of the stadium. Honestly, you will never notice it, and the Twins get to get a much better stadium and more revenue to retain more players.

Nick -- That word is schadenfreude. Yay for things I learned from the Simpsons.

CapitalBabs -- When the earlier stadium plans were proposed, I didn't like them for the same reason, that the money was better spent on things already getter short shrift, like education. But that's why I like this plan so much. It's not state money. It's not money that should go to fixing our schools. It's money spent by the people most likely to lose if the Twins leave town.

But again, I'm not a Minnesotan, so it's really not my argument. That won't, however, keep me out of the debate. :)

I'm sure angry. I think he's a cheapskate and an S.O.B. and I will never forgive him for this. I think he's been terrible about the stadium issues. I think he should pay for a retractable roof. But I also think this stadium proposal is going to be the one that gets it done, so let's get it done.

That said, I think the people who are angriest about the contraction thing are Twins fans, and that it's not necessarily Twins fans who are talking about subsidizing a billionaire.

Good point, Fran. I'm still pissed about the attempted contraction too. I suppose one could view this as rewarding Pohlad for his bad behavior, and thus providing an incentive for such behavior in the future.

But, should we let our anger get in the way of evaluating what's in our own best interests? I contend we should not. (And I realize, of course, that reasonable people can differ on what's in their best interests.)

I have avoided talking about the stadium issue due to my job but let me say a couple short comments and then I will return to my non-commenting back-of-the-room habit.

a) stadium is better than no stadium so you get what will PASS
b) it's not TAX that gets people's undies in a bunch or they would be upset over this proposal - which they aren't
c) it's the State putting money into RECREATION when budgets are barely maintaining or being cut left and right for more essential state services. Yes, you and I know how the business side works but is a stadium more important than education? transportation?

It basically comes down to priorities and the people who have the really hard calls to make have said - listen, we are going to use what resources we have elsewhere. We love the idea of this being built but you will have to find the money yourself.

So, Hennepin Cty did. And that is why I said early on that this proposal had the best chance of any bill I have seen in the last 7 years. It shows that they are cognizant of the issues here and realize that it all boils down to Item A on the list: Stadium is better than no stadium.

Ok.. I will now bow out and let y'all debate.
Nick  94
05-18-2005 09:32 PM ET (US)
I'm glad you folks agree. And even though nobody disagrees so far, I think I can state my argument with a bit more clarity.

A rational person is for the stadium if the marginal costs to that person are greater than the marginal benefits. Though this sounds simple enough, the costs and benefits will vary by the person's values. For example, if a person is so personally offended by subsidizing a billionaire that he can't live with himself, the costs of this stadium would be high to that person.

Of course, people are free to feel how they want to about subsidizing the rich. But I believe it's irrational to feel so strongly about it. I forget what the German word is for being happy about another's failures (it came up in a discussion on Batgirl about the Yankees), but this seems to be a variation on that. Which is to say, people feel angry about the success of another, without regard to the personal costs and benefits of the issue. When viewed in this light, the anger some people feel toward subsidizing Carl Pohlad seems both wrong and irrational.

SaraZ  89
05-18-2005 09:30 PM ET (US)
It's times like these -- when the stadium issues come up -- that I really wish I lived in Minnesota so I could be an activist for it. I understand why people are wary of paying for a stadium, especially when MLB has exhorted money out of so many cities. ("You give us money, or we'll pull your team. We mean it this time!") But the Twins obviously need it, and it's just not that much money. The benefit of a new stadium won't just go to Pohlad. It'll go to the whole state.

It is subsidizing a billionaire in some sense, I agree. And, though I'm not how you feel on the issue, Fran, it's also subsidizing the state's economy, if that makes any sense.

My guess is that the majority of the people in the state would say the Twins are worth this tiny amount. If we assume that to be true, then the stadium is simply the rational choice. Subsidizing a billionaire ought to be wholly irrelevant to the analysis.
Franorama  81
05-18-2005 09:22 PM ET (US)
I don't think anyone is afraid of the tax. It's the subsidizing a billionaire thing that is the hang-up. The Twins are certainly worth three cents on $20.

There we go!

Nick -- could you bench him for the rest of the year?

I knew it would work! JJ needed to snap out of that slump, so I benched him tonight on my fantasy team. It worked last time, and it worked again!

According to Gameday, that was 4 pitches right down the middle. Fly out to LF. Ouch.

Yeah, that's how a team with killer pitching and airtight defense does it! More! More!

Good to see the Jays are susceptible to the GIDP as well.

Newmie's awesome. I'd also like to hear the bench coach miked up. Last year in KC there was a tornado warning and Gardy said Lidle put the bats on the window panes, 'cause he "knew nothing would hit our bats." Those crazy bench coaches...

It's a good thing Bartlett wasn't in there last night. They pasted up for 10 runs, God knows how many more it would have been without Castro.

I'm sure Castro will deliver us the game tonight, just as the other Castro has delivered prosperity to Cuba... wait, really? They still drive Edsels and use lead based paint in Cuba. Oh, nevermind.

ok guys.. I'm still at work - of course - and I may have to be here for awhile. So I am stuck watching via Gameday until I can get myself out of the office.
