According to researchers, the evening of June 23, St. John's Eve, is the eve of celebration before the Feast Day of St. John the Baptist. The Gospel of Luke (Luke 1:36, 56-57) states that John was born about six months before Jesus, therefore the feast of John the Baptist falls on June 24, six months before Christmas. This feast day is one of the very few saint's days to mark the anniversary of the birth, rather than the death, of its namesake.

St. John's Eve, or “Noche de San Juan” as it is known to many of us, is celebrated in many countries such as Spain, Ireland, Scandinavia, France, Caribbean Islands and of course Puerto Rico. Some of the traditions and beliefs of this celebration night include the lighting of the bonfires, prayers, music, singing, and dancing. Also, that at the stroke of midnight on St. John's Day, the waters are blessed and possess special powers, including curing sickness, giving beauty, improving fortune, aiding in fertility, increasing agricultural production, and warding off evil.

In Puerto Rico, healers and voodoo priests were commonly seen walking along the beach chanting with incense lanterns and herbs cleansing away these evil spirits. The rituals associated with water date back to ancient civilizations, including old Egypt and its unity with the Nile River. Fire is also a purifying element. Bonfires are lit on the eve of Saint John's Day and some people leap over them believing it will purify them and prevent ailments. This custom allegedly was very common in ancient Rome

You may remember another tradition of Puerto Rico, in which you walk backwards toward the beach and do back flips in the water at exactly midnight. This ritual is supposed to bring good luck and keep evil away throughout the year. Just how many flips one must do is uncertain, with some sources indicating 12 flips, which coincides with midnight and the months of the year, while other sources say seven; it is up to you how many you do.

As a child, I recall being terrified of going into the sea at night but more so of not following tradition and having demons chasing after me for the rest of the year, so I would only do three fast flips and ran out of the water as quickly as I could. As I got older, it was fun waiting with anticipation the countdown for midnight (like a New Year’s eve) holding hands and walking backwards into the sea with friends and family (most of them already drunk, lol), and competing with others at the beach for the biggest bonfire around the shore. It was a magical night, full of so much excitement and mystery that indeed you could see those evil spirits flying away, unable to stop the thousands of blessings and positive vibrations surrounding our little island of Puerto Rico.

In Arizona, while we do not have a sea nearby to flip backwards into, we do have Nury Hernandez and her enthusiasm in keeping tradition alive. Lets show her our support by coming and celebrating “Noche de San Juan” with music, dancing and food.
