Hi again, this is my second message. Hoping to get some riding in this weekend, sounds like the weather is not going to cooperate. Hope to see some of you out at the Fort tonight for the MMBA ride at 6:30.

Hey R-

On my 'topic' for the chorus I discovered how the ads work. Google powers them and they're based on the content of the posts. So, for BCGC the ads appeared with all kinds of interesting content about thong bikinis, single women, etc. For $15 I purchased a 2 year subscription to Quick Topic and the ads went away, without losing the existing posts.

cheers

News flash to BC2 members...

Lucinda Means, Executive Director of the LMB, passed away this week. It's still a mystery, but heart trouble is expected to be the cause. I'll keep you posted with memorial service info. She lived alone with 2 dogs and a friend discovered her. Her cycling community was her family.

I am organizing a ride for this Saturday, August 13th.
Meet at Sam's Club at M-66 and Beckley Road by 9:00am. Distance is 32 miles, easy terrain, 16-18 mph. We'll be going south to Burlington and back. Questions? Call me at 209-3470.

Hey Dave, how was the ride? I'll be riding tomorrow night and then we have the ride on Saturday. Want me to sketch out a shorter loop? Is Laura riding?

Tomorrow's Retro Route Ride is a 20 miler, largely using the Linear Park. Weather permitting though, as it's supposed to rain. 9:00 am. at the KCC big parking lot if it's sunny, or at least not raining.

cheers!

Hi,

I just want to say hello and introduce myself to the BC cycling community. I have recently re-located here from Grand Junction, Colorado, although I have family here and have been an occasional visitor to BC since the mid eighties.

I was a Cat, III racer from the mid eighties through the mid ninties, however these last four years of complete sloth have caught up with me. I aim to remedy this.

My sister (one of the above mentioned family) and I will be riding the CCC. It will be my first century in five years. I look forward to it.

And I look forward to meeting all of you. See you on the road!

KC-

Welcome! I'm sure you'll enjoy this year's CCC. It's tough to have been at such a competitive level and then to lose some fitness. Don't worry, your legs will remember the good ole days! Please join us on some of the rides this week from Team Active! I'm also hoping to ride the tentative metric century route for the CCC this weekend. Let me know if you're interested...and anyone else too!

cheers!

Hi Brian,

I will be working this weekend, however my sister and I are planning a ride on Monday, the 5th. We are going to go 70 - 80 miles.

Depending on my schedule, I may be able to do the Wednesday night ride... hanging in might be another matter... :)

Great ride, the CCC! Well supported and fun.

You need coffee at the rest stops (Daily Grind, Brownstone?)... otherwise very well done. Great route and the stop at mile 91 was a great idea!

KC,
Thanks for riding! I'm glad you had a good time. I had the same thought yesterday about coffee. We have a wrap up meeting Wednesday and i'll put it on the list.

thanks again!

I thought there was so much done right, it would be icing on the cake to have a latte or coke at the last rest stop... or perhaps before.

The presence of support vehicles on the road was amazing. How many volunteers did you have?

Lunch at the 66 mile mark was a great idea as well.

In any case, here are some of my pics:

KC,

That's so great to hear. You won't believe this, but we had a grand total of 4 people driving sag Sunday. One of those could only stay until 11, so after that there were 3 of us. We stayed in constant communication to try to make sure all the routes were adequately covered. Fortunately, only 1 tube needed changing and only one rider had physical difficulties (cramping). The best sag support is the unused kind!

Hi Jim!

I'm out here...somewhere. Not putting in miles. Putting on weight. Working like crazy at the j.o.b. and missing cycling a ton! Trying to commute but schedule keeps getting in the way. you?

Yeah, we're out here too. Just got back from a x-country ski trip up north. Got to ski Friday night and all day Saturday, got fairly warm Saturday but we made the most of the conditions. Today was a total wash though, pouring rain and 37 degrees near Cadillac.

Hopefully it will either get cold and snow, or quit raining so we can ride to work.

Hey Jim,

No meetings are planned, though I think we need to. Hmm, according to our bylaws I believe we're required to. We need to have a presence at the EOW, but yet again I have a dress rehearsal that night that I can't miss. I would like to maintain and expand the rides we did last year (retro route rides) that were a small hit but do more of them. Somehow I want to get more families on the bike...ice cream rides, etc. I just don't know how though.

Randy, you've used club discount cards before. Would you have time to create a proposal to take around to some local shops? I'd like to get TA, Getaway, Billy's, and Breakaway on it. Also, what could we have at EOW regarding CCC?

cheers,
bc

Hey All,

We are way overdue for a meeting, at least a board meeting. It is time to either get this off the ground or give up.

I am out of town every weekend until the second weekend of March, and I'm not sure about that one either. I will not be in Battle Creek the night of the EOW event. I could make up a couple of big posters for the CCC to put up at the EOW. Could do a half sheet flyer too if someone will be there to pass them out, so let me know. Won't happen this week however, as I will be in Ohio for 2 days for a funeral.

I could also rough out a proposal for a discount program, will send something your way for approval ASAP.

Hello Again,

I do have a proposal that I would like to put before the board at our upcoming meeting to be announced. The Y-Center spinning bikes need pedals IMHO. The 3 bikes in the gym have dual sided pedals, with spd on one side and a toe clip on the other. The bikes in the Spinning room however only have toe clips. I think we might be able to get some mileage out of making a donation to the Y to buy a few sets of dual side pedals for the spinning room. Will check with Barb Ramsey to see if the Y would welcome such a gesture next time I bump into her.

So place that on the potential agenda if you would.

I would be willing to help at the eow. The party is going to be held in the store rather than across the street, Fri. Feb. 24

Randy--Any word on a CCC poster or fliers? Or perhaps the discount card?
Jim--If you could just spread the bc2 gospel of us working on rides for new and casual riders it would be really helpful. My goal is to make the Saturday rides a consistent event starting in May, but we'll need ride leaders. 14-16 mph speed, not average speed, and we'll only see 20+ on the descents. Great for the weekend warriors and new roadies looking to build some steady mileage. Obviously, the CCC is a must and will remain our flagship event this year in September. Better routes than last year. Perhaps, Randy, if you had a minute to print out some of the routes that you already have done it might draw some really pre-registrants?

Like I said before, I have a dress rehearsal for a concert in which I have to sing and conduct, so I'm completely tied up Friday night. TA has bc2 t-shirts, so let's be sure to get those in view of people to buy.

Weather looks to break next week hopefully and we can start pedalling (I haven't been).

Randy here, its 3am and my head hurts so bad I can't sleep so I thought I'd check my email for the first time in a day or two.

Pat and I have been terribly sick and sadly nothing has happened this week, bike club or otherwise. We both have a sinus/bronchial infection which started into pneumonia for Pat. We are both on the latest antibiotics and Pat is taking steroids. Have both missed a fair amount of work this week. Regardless, I have a commitment in Kalamazoo from 9 to 4 tomorrow that I must attend and we have to get Jessi to Mount Pleasant by 6:30 tomorrow evening, so I will accomplish nothing tomorrow either. You'll just have to wing it.

If anyone sees Julie W. thank her for getting the BC2 some ink in the Enquirer article on the EOW party.

Randy, waiting for the advil to kick in.

Hi folks,

Finally, at long last, the bc2 website has been updated. I put up some rides and events for May and the rest of the summer. More to come, for sure. bc2 board needs to meet soon, but I need to wait until after our big Mozart gig on March 25th. Perhaps on the 29th. Let's ride!

Hello All,

Just an update here. I attended the March 7th City Commission to speak on behalf of all bicyclists in favor of the adoption of the Non-Motorized Transportation Plan for Battle Creek. While I was the only citizen there that spoke, I'm quite certain I swayed the commission, who moments later voted unanimously to adopt it.

Secondly, Nelson Karre and I spoke on behalf of the adoption of the Riverside Road project to include bike lanes, and a 4.5' sidewalk from Columbia to Beckley road. There was no one there to speak against the project. Although this project is not yet fully funded, it was approved 7 to 1 by the commission. It will be done in three phases and should start later this year.

Randy

Dear Fellow Cyclists,

Spring is springing and there is LOTS of cycling activity in and around Battle Creek! Below is a list of happenings just in the next couple of months. Let’s get out and ride!!!

Today! Team Active Super Sale: Support your local bike shop! Lots of stuff is on sale. This is a nationwide sale by Trek, so most Trek dealers are having this big sale right now, including Breakaway Bicycles in Portage.

Saturday, April 8, 9:00 a.m.: Annual Linear Park Cleanup Day, sponsored by Team Active. Every year at this time the good folks at TA organize a clean up day to pick up sticks, litter, and glass from the Linear Park. Stop into the store to sign up and help keep our valuable multi-use resource in good condition. There’s nothing quite like getting a flat tire during your commute on your way to work and being late for that important meeting!

This Week: The weekly rides sponsored by Team Active start. Monday and Wednesday rides both start from behind the store downtown at 6:30. Helmets required. Various routes and paces, but typically the Monday ride is a bit slower than the Wednesday one. Of course, it’s only April, so neither of them are going to go super fast! Contact the shop for more information.

Saturday, May 6, 10:00 a.m. Blessing of the Bikes: Sponsored by St. Thomas Episcopal Church, this is the 3rd Annual BoftheB. Local cyclists are invited to participate in a short liturgy on the Linear Park just next to St. Thomas (16 W. Van Buren St.) that asks blessings of safety and enjoyment during another season of riding. Short ride to follow.

Saturdays beginning in May: Retro Route Rides. These rides on Saturday mornings use the 20-year-old bc2 route maps (double checked for accuracy). Most rides include a shorter option. Relive the fun days of the Battle Creek Bike Club and ride some of the favorite old routes. Pace for the longer route will be 16-18 mph, shorter route will be a bit slower. All Retro Route Rides leave at 9:00 a.m. from the designated spot. Email ride captain Brian Clissold for more info or to volunteer to lead a ride. Specific routes to be announced soon. RRR's will begin in May and WE NEED RIDE LEADERS!

Ride of Silence
Thursday, May 17, 7:00 p.m.
www.rideofsilence.org
bc2 is participating in this national event for the first time. This 12 mile ride will honor cyclists who have been killed while riding. The ride is to be completed in silence in their memory. Location details coming soon.

Cereal City Century, September 17, 2006. It’s back! The routes keep getting flatter, smoother, and better. Mark your calendar now for this fantastic century. Routes of 31, 45, 62, and 100 miles. This is the PERFECT century for the first time century rider. Check out Bicycling Magazine’s Century Training Plan on their website. For a small fee, you can login, track your miles, and follow a professional and proven training plan. www.bicycling.com.

Non-motorized Transportation Map…the official map is available on the Team Active website (www.teamactive.com). Check out the future of non-motorized transportation routes in our city, and special thanks to Mike and Steve from Team Active for their tireless work on this!

Stay tuned…bc2 will have a meeting soon. Watch the website (http://bcbikeclub.home.comcast.net/index.htm) and your email box. In the meantime….see you on the road, or trail, or both!

Ride Safe, Ride Fast!

Hello all!

Tomorrow night at 7:00 the Battle Creek Bicycle Club is proud to host the 2006 Ride of Silence. This event is held around the world tomorrow and aims to 1) honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while riding and 2) raise awareness of cycling amidst our motoring public. This short ride will be held rain or shine at a very slow pace and in complete silence. We'll start at the parking lot behind Team Active. There is no fee. Helmets are required. All abilities, disciplines, and riders are welcome and encouraged to participate.

A note to those who regularly participate in the Team Active Wednesday night ride...if you would be willing to do this ride in place of, or some how in addition to, the regular ride it would be most appreciated. We all know people who have been hurt while riding and we all put ourselves at risk for the love of our sport.

Please invite lots of people to join!

Ride safe,
brian

Hi Jim,

I haven't received any emails, so I'm assuming any CCC emails were sent to Pat and Randy, who are backpacking right now. They should be back any day. The brochure is printed and has distributed to local shops but is not online. So, interested riders should stop by Breakaway, TA, etc. for now. I can also answer questions and riders can email me at clissold@tds.net. Sorry for the confusion! I just returned from being out of town for more than a week myself.

Randy...if you get a chance, could you post the brochure online in a pdf? TA is getting calls about it and I've received an email. Riders are looking for it.

thanks!
