Hey, Mccann: Why do you say your manager is greedy working 60 hrs a week. They don't get overtime, they work extra to fill in people who called out sick or those who goof off, so don't blame your mgr. He's not hogging the money,I do believe they're required to work a 50 hr week & I'm sure he or she would rather be home with their families.

In the 6 years I've been working at Publix we have never had cutbacks in hours. It's really starting to hurt. This is the doing of the Jenkins family, who don't like losing money. Associates are cut down to working one day a week & now Publix wonders how come people are quitting. I can't make it on a 5 hour week myself & am thinking of applying elsewhere except I hate to lose the insurance & have to wait 90 or more days before I can pick up a new one.

If you are having a hard time making full time, then you need to talk to your managers. I had a hard time making full time at one store I was working with and it all boiled down to one of the managers not liking me.. the Store Manager. Why? Because my mother and brother had both quit during the time I worked there. Every time one of the other managers who liked me tried to get me promoted or something the other manager would always bring up the fact that my mom and brother quit and would I do the same. I eventually transferred to another store and within a month I got an incredible raise, full time and a great position. Why? Different manager who saw that I worked and did what was asked of me and then some.
I have seen people hired right off the street at full time even if they say they hire from within. Why do they do that? The person has to have good experience. They aren't pulling some random unexperienced person off the street.
And yes, they do have full time cashiers. I've seen three different stores have at least one full time cashier, up to two. In those cases, they were older women. One women at the store near me now has been with Publix for so long that if she works on Sundays, she gets time and a half.

I know what you mean about working yor a-- off I do the same.My store does not want to give anyone full time. I have asked the store manager several times, he is the one who gave the other cashier full time as stated previously, and she never ghad worked at Publix before, came right in and started full time, so what is wrong with this picture? She found out of an opening at a new Greenwise store and went for the interview, she will making a couple dollars more an hour there than whayt she was making at my store. We are good friends so I know this for a fact, all Publix wants to give you is a 25 cent raise or 50 cent, they act like it is killing them, but I am not going to quit, I like my job and the people I work with, soon i will have the position I want since I am already working the full time hours.

You know, I've read this message board and have to agree with the veterans of Publix. I started less than a year ago, busted my ass in the Deli, and was given an oppurtunity to go full time in produce after only a month. My salary that I started out at (I just got a raise) I had to work for almost a year at Winn-Dixie to make. I've had two evals in nine months. But I also persued the eval. If you know that you should get one keep asking. I harped on my Assistant Store Manager about it and it was solved. I got my eval, and a raise because my manager has seen how hard I worked to get it. I was told that I needed to step up, and I did. There are no free rides in this world. If you want to be full time and feel you deserve it, ask for it. Keep asking. Ask your department manager. If that doesn't work, your store manager. If that doesn't work... and so on. The whole company has an open door policy, but you must remember to at least use the chain of command. (The military taught me that.) Look, does the work suck? Yes, sometimes it does. Believe me, by Friday I hate doing inventory. But Publix is the only job I've had in the last twelve years that I have actually felt or been treated like a human. That's by management and customers. Just wanted to add that no job performed at Publix is a step down from another. It's just another facet. Heck, sometimes it's nice to have a change from what you do everyday. It gives you a fresh outlook on the original position.

Bakery girl, the store I work at does have full time cashiers, we had a woman come in, never worked at Publix before and get a full time job, as a cahier ,ticked a lot of people off, this was about 6 months ago, she has now transfered to a new store, and is making more money and full time, so proving yourself and going beyond does not always help, I have never called in sick, always work if they call me in on days off. Never late,I do average around 35 to 40 hours a week, I like working at Publix and have made a lot of friends but I would like to have the full time position I deserve since I am working the full time hours.

PS - Courtney Stick it out. If you are worth a flip you can make fulltime. Until then is your only ability sandwich making? Every company that I have worked retail for has had the same request. It is legal, and very common at that.

To the person who stated that they were to receive 4 reviews in the first year.. You were miss-informed. It is a 3/3/6 schedual on the first year, and then every 6 months from there on in.
As for Full time- There are no Fulltime cashiers at my store (Not sure about other stores) Deli has a certain amount, so do other departments. They HAVE to have part time associates as when the seasons slow how would they make up for a decrease in sales? Hours schedualed are based on IPL or Items per labor hour.. so the more items sold = more hours departments are able to use.
People that are given full time have proven themselves to be above and beyond. You have to show them that you will do everything within the best of your ability to make everything right. That means no matter what the customer says - remember - they are right. Everytime you ignore someone you just lost a sale. So I know in a course of a day people that I work with tend to bunch togeather and ignore people for a good 15 minutes just so they can chat. Then complain about hours. Well.. whos fault is that? If you always ask for time off, and they have no one to fill that time you asked for off.. they have to hire someone to fill that void. It isn't brain surgery.
I can not deal with the kids (sorry to generalize) that come in, crab bout being unfairly treated.. how so and so gets favored.. when so and so is working their ass off to make up for their slacking.
If you don't like it LEAVE. Everyone is replaceable. Don't think you are not.

When it comes down to it, it's not the "company" itsself, it's the individuals who are working for the company. So, take it from there.

I work part time at Publix in their deli and I also work part time at another sandwich shop 15 miles away. Publix is telling me I can't work both because they are a "competitor". Did anyone ever hear of that? Is it legal? Can they make me quit? Thanks.
