Part 1: Well, Jeez . . where do I start? I first started at Publix in 1995 in Tampa Palms Florida. Kinda cool part time job when I first moved down at age 18. I
was there about a year and then (I was told the store had a really bad inventory) me and a few others were accused of theft. Of course I denied it . . no
really I didnt do it. One of the other kids got to work before me the next day and was brought into the manager's office and was let go. I didnt get any
details from him before I was facing the same ass-raping. I was brought into the office and surrounded . . and I mean surrounded by the managers. They
insisted that I had stolen some silly item . . I believe it was sun tanning lotion or something like that. I giggled at first not realizing that this was
becoming a serious matter. I insisted that I didnt . . .3 or four times and then the manager finally said "look we know you were stealing so if you will
admit to taking 2500 dollars worth of merchandise and agree to pay it back, you can keep your job. ??????????? Hmmmmm . . . that didnt sound quite right to
me . . I mean I was young, but not a complete and utter retard. I refused and they let me go. That store manager is probably dead now and I should have
beaten him and his managers senseless right there in that (upstairs) office.
Later on that day I called the other kid and he told me the same thing . . .except he admitted to it and agreed to pay it back and was fired anyway . . .LOL.
What an idiot. I don't know what ever happened there. So, I went home and told my "mommy" of course . . lol and we decided to never shop there again and
told all of our neighbors(which all shopped there) the same. I still think she doesnt shop there . . lol. Oh, well . . bunch of scumbags. . . lets hit em
where it hurts right? I later found out where the money was really going . . a guy I see later on working for one of the Publix wine vendors . . .funny shit
! He would see me once or twice a week(I wont tell you which store . . lol) and chat about the old Publix parties in good 'ol Tampa Palms !
Part 2: In 1998, I moved to Atlanta and needed a quick job and returned to beautiful brand new Publix. It was wonderful !!!! What a different company ! I cant say
enough good things about Publix in Atlanta. The workforce was far superior and the stores were well staffed. We had so many people and everyone loved to
shop and work there. I should have stayed at the 'ol #536.
Two years later I tranferred back down to a store on St. petersburg beach, florida. Yuck, what a gross mess. I mean this store was probably one of the
dirtiest stores I have ever seen(I was warned though . . .my manager in atlanta who is probably a district manager by now (nameless). . lol . . .warned me
that st. pete was NOT the place to go. I did enjoy working there though with the great looking people. Lots of good peeps down there.
Then I decided I needed a break and went to college for a while still searching for a life outside of a so-called Fortune company that I realized was sinking
into the poopy tank fast.
Part 3: Hmmm . . .what the hell am I doing. It's 2008 and once again I returned to another store in St. pete. What the hell is wrong with me? Are all of the other
jobs out there just as bad? Or do I just want to be left alone? Or do I just believe in a hard days work for a days pay? LOL . . you can all laugh at me
now. I just really like the area and had to move back from the terrible Bible-beating city of Greenville, SC. Just remember : if you're not with us than
you must be a terrorist right?
This is the store I refer to as 2-shitty-9 !
Are people really that scared of (something) that they have to come in and say look "democrats are terrorists" Shaun Hannity said so . . look !!!!!! Have I
been in a fucking time-warp or something? What the hell is wrong with these people? What the hell are they so afraid of in their lives that would make them
feel so threatened of people that (as a culture) we will never understand? I am white by the way. Well I dont want to get into culture but . . look at this
pitiful american culture with your cell-phones and ipods and american idol. Do you have any interests? Put down your silly phones! Stop being so insecure!
No one is watching you ! You're ugly! You're retarded!. . . you should all be put to sleep !!! Well anyway . . .
I like some of the people but I see right away why Publix put in the merit system and strict evaluations. I have seen other sites complaing about this, but
what you end up with is a bunch of employees that have been there 20 years, and have sucked for twenty years and would like to suck for another 20 years . .
Get my point???? They really need to weed out some of these ass-clowns. I would assume this is happening in all of the Florida stores now. We get no
production out of anyone and guess who has to pick up the slack on Friday when everyone goes home on a half day because they are out of hours from not
punching out for breaks. . .you know what I mean if you've worked there. So, now we cant hire any quality people because the store is full of a bunch of 40
something crack-heads from the beach.
Drugs and drug dealing is rampant throughout the store(s). One poor guy cant even come back to work because he gets harrassed to by more crack every day.
He is a recovering addict and just isnt strong enough yet to have something like that in his face every day. He is now in rehab after he overdosed twice in
the store(still employed though). The guy came back from the hospital twice and now he's back in again(status unknown).
Certain managers seem to think this is pretty funny and others just say "I dont know what's wrong with him. . .wink wink." Other employees kinda joke about
it in the store. HEEHEE, well he shouldnt by crack from the stock crew then, HEEHEE.
Every time I see things like this, it reminds me of what Publix first did to me. Some days I feal like taking in a recorder and taking some serious action.
I would like nothing more than to take these scumbags out. Other days I just think "well I dont wanna be a rat and get pushed out/fired/perhaps shot !!!! I
realize that most of these people have families and they are overworked like me and just turn a blind-eye to pretty much everything that goes on. I have
already warned some people/managers that I dont appreciate what is going on and tried to hint that I dont feel safe in the store and shouldnt be around this
kind of crap. They just brush me off. Any suggestions?????
So, as I write this . . I just returned home from another terrible day of Publix. So and so is hurt . . so and so couldnt make it . . so and so got written
up and sent home . . .you have to finish everything . . .you know, the usual !
It makes me very sad to see what Publix has become. It's all about volume now. Keep just enough bodies in the store to keep it going and we'll fix it in
the morning. Managers get their bonuses . . dont really care about anything else. Customer service is gone. The shelves are empty !!!!!!!!!! There was once
a glimpse of a great company when I worked in Atlanta but I am assuming that it is long gone.
I dont even shop in my own store because it takes 20 minutes to buy a pack of cigs. I go across the street to the other store.
I do enjoy my life though. I dont want to sound like a miserable loser that's alwayss complaining. I have a wonderful girlfriend, live in a wonderful condo
on the water and have quite a few hobbies that I enjoy.
Well anyway . . .Good night. . . and Good Luck !

Sending a tip to all of you to keep constant checks on your hours. Seems I was seriously sick early 2007 and was out a lot, then the cutbacks came cause corporate told us weekly how many hours each dept. was allowed & even though I was able to return to work my hours were very little. I just found out as of 1/1/08 that Publix cut off my blue cross. I no longer have insurance & still have doctors to see, blood work, tests, etc. So, what am I to do? Corporate was covering their butts to keep money on top & I get penalized cause I didn't have 1000 hours for last year. So, if you've had hours cut for some reason I advise you to keep check on them so this doesn't happen to you.

Hey, Mccann: Why do you say your manager is greedy working 60 hrs a week. They don't get overtime, they work extra to fill in people who called out sick or those who goof off, so don't blame your mgr. He's not hogging the money,I do believe they're required to work a 50 hr week & I'm sure he or she would rather be home with their families.

In the 6 years I've been working at Publix we have never had cutbacks in hours. It's really starting to hurt. This is the doing of the Jenkins family, who don't like losing money. Associates are cut down to working one day a week & now Publix wonders how come people are quitting. I can't make it on a 5 hour week myself & am thinking of applying elsewhere except I hate to lose the insurance & have to wait 90 or more days before I can pick up a new one.

If you are having a hard time making full time, then you need to talk to your managers. I had a hard time making full time at one store I was working with and it all boiled down to one of the managers not liking me.. the Store Manager. Why? Because my mother and brother had both quit during the time I worked there. Every time one of the other managers who liked me tried to get me promoted or something the other manager would always bring up the fact that my mom and brother quit and would I do the same. I eventually transferred to another store and within a month I got an incredible raise, full time and a great position. Why? Different manager who saw that I worked and did what was asked of me and then some.
I have seen people hired right off the street at full time even if they say they hire from within. Why do they do that? The person has to have good experience. They aren't pulling some random unexperienced person off the street.
And yes, they do have full time cashiers. I've seen three different stores have at least one full time cashier, up to two. In those cases, they were older women. One women at the store near me now has been with Publix for so long that if she works on Sundays, she gets time and a half.

I know what you mean about working yor a-- off I do the same.My store does not want to give anyone full time. I have asked the store manager several times, he is the one who gave the other cashier full time as stated previously, and she never ghad worked at Publix before, came right in and started full time, so what is wrong with this picture? She found out of an opening at a new Greenwise store and went for the interview, she will making a couple dollars more an hour there than whayt she was making at my store. We are good friends so I know this for a fact, all Publix wants to give you is a 25 cent raise or 50 cent, they act like it is killing them, but I am not going to quit, I like my job and the people I work with, soon i will have the position I want since I am already working the full time hours.

You know, I've read this message board and have to agree with the veterans of Publix. I started less than a year ago, busted my ass in the Deli, and was given an oppurtunity to go full time in produce after only a month. My salary that I started out at (I just got a raise) I had to work for almost a year at Winn-Dixie to make. I've had two evals in nine months. But I also persued the eval. If you know that you should get one keep asking. I harped on my Assistant Store Manager about it and it was solved. I got my eval, and a raise because my manager has seen how hard I worked to get it. I was told that I needed to step up, and I did. There are no free rides in this world. If you want to be full time and feel you deserve it, ask for it. Keep asking. Ask your department manager. If that doesn't work, your store manager. If that doesn't work... and so on. The whole company has an open door policy, but you must remember to at least use the chain of command. (The military taught me that.) Look, does the work suck? Yes, sometimes it does. Believe me, by Friday I hate doing inventory. But Publix is the only job I've had in the last twelve years that I have actually felt or been treated like a human. That's by management and customers. Just wanted to add that no job performed at Publix is a step down from another. It's just another facet. Heck, sometimes it's nice to have a change from what you do everyday. It gives you a fresh outlook on the original position.

Bakery girl, the store I work at does have full time cashiers, we had a woman come in, never worked at Publix before and get a full time job, as a cahier ,ticked a lot of people off, this was about 6 months ago, she has now transfered to a new store, and is making more money and full time, so proving yourself and going beyond does not always help, I have never called in sick, always work if they call me in on days off. Never late,I do average around 35 to 40 hours a week, I like working at Publix and have made a lot of friends but I would like to have the full time position I deserve since I am working the full time hours.

To the person who stated that they were to receive 4 reviews in the first year.. You were miss-informed. It is a 3/3/6 schedual on the first year, and then every 6 months from there on in.
As for Full time- There are no Fulltime cashiers at my store (Not sure about other stores) Deli has a certain amount, so do other departments. They HAVE to have part time associates as when the seasons slow how would they make up for a decrease in sales? Hours schedualed are based on IPL or Items per labor hour.. so the more items sold = more hours departments are able to use.
People that are given full time have proven themselves to be above and beyond. You have to show them that you will do everything within the best of your ability to make everything right. That means no matter what the customer says - remember - they are right. Everytime you ignore someone you just lost a sale. So I know in a course of a day people that I work with tend to bunch togeather and ignore people for a good 15 minutes just so they can chat. Then complain about hours. Well.. whos fault is that? If you always ask for time off, and they have no one to fill that time you asked for off.. they have to hire someone to fill that void. It isn't brain surgery.
I can not deal with the kids (sorry to generalize) that come in, crab bout being unfairly treated.. how so and so gets favored.. when so and so is working their ass off to make up for their slacking.
If you don't like it LEAVE. Everyone is replaceable. Don't think you are not.

It really doesn't matter which Publix you work for, I have worked in 10 locations. It is what you make it not the other way around. You will always have people that are challenging to work with and for. No matter what company you work for this will happen. Deal with it. No one owes you anything and that includes your employer. As it has been mentioned time and again, if you are unhappy and everyone is "against" you and "no one appreciates how hard you work", please feel free to take your problems else where. We will work a little harder without you but only for a while, there are so many people out there who need a job. Good luck to you. My stock will continue to grow as will my retirement. I am looking at 40 in the next two years and I will be able to retire from Publix and not have to work because of what kind of company I work for.

I have been with publix over half my life, and yes I would love to quit, but publix is good to me. the job is hell sometimes, especially this time of year when they cut hours. But right now there is nothing out there that wants to give you stock and benifits as much as publix does. I think that they forget about the employees at times when it comes to raises, but I like when bonus time comes around.Money that wasn't there before.I think that all in all publix is good.

I have been with Publix 19 yrs. I see people on both sides of the aisle. Some are happy, some disgruntled. If you are unhappy with being a Publix associate "QUIT". The company will go on. We who are happy with our company, and I do mean OUR company will get by just fine with you gone. Please go work for our competition since they need good disgruntled type people to help OUR stock go up. I will soon pass the million dollar mark without having a college degree, and having started at the bottom. It's easy people and some here have hit it right on the head. Work hard, show up every day, and have a good attitude. If you have anything else, take it to Winn Dixie.

I guess it depends on which Publix you work at if it is a great place to work. I have been with Publix a year now and I think management cares about one thing, their pay check. I average over 36 hours a week, part time, never late, come in on days off and work, I have had only 2 evalucations in the year I have been there and I was told you get one every three months the first year, so I am way passed due. I am a cashier now and some days are schedueled to bag grocerys and take them out to the customers car, I dont mind bagging but I do not think a cashier should have to wear a baggers uniform for that day and take out groceries to the car,my Publix is ubder staffed and they do not care, it just makes all the other cashiers and baggers work harder. The managers do not want to give you full time, beacuse they loose money in their pockets. I am planning on giving them my 2 week notice, since they do not appreciate all the hard work I do, I will miss all my friends I have made working there but I will not miss the way I am treated, and the lousy pay.

Let me tell you my story of the great publix. I worked for 2 years full time in the pharmacy. Our little hole in the wall "the Box". well but the means of pure act of god I got pregnant. this did not set well with my dept manager, of course i didn't care what HE thought of the situation. I worked 4 10hour days all through out my pregnancy and if needed to change my schedual to help over the weekend or to cover for another tech with no fuss. I loved my job and did what ever to help out. I also came to work on time everyday. A month or 2 before my leave my dept manager hired someone that was suppose to be qualified but did not work for 4 years. I trained her to my best abilities with little help from the new employee. She would call of receive calls constantly through out the day from family and had to be forced to help ring up customers. as this went on the rest of the techs in the department understood that the new one would be part time to help out while I was gone. well i left for my 6 weeks and as soon as i return and hearing all the horror stories about the new one, i soon realize that they made her FULL time and now I'm part time. I was VERY upset about this and told them I had every "right to return to my previous status". at first they did not listen to me. well i called the top person i could and this made my manager angry because i didn't come to him...uummm yes i did!!! they finally gave me full time back with out losing my ins or prev status i had earned...but they would NOT demote the new one. they said they could not go back on this????well what did they do to me then. this in turn cause more problems because we did not have the business to have 2 full time techs.. new one "did not work weekend" but i did. I came to work on time and "new one" didn't. i had no complaints from customers--they actually missed me while i was gone..but "new one" had many complaints. then to top all this off my mother ended up in the hospital and was on her death bed and i received word of her death at work in person from preacher in the store. I STAYED at work hours after hearing this to finish my shift..because "new one" had to DO something.....after a week or 2.. I quit..you want that stupid, you keep it. their words were "we're sorry.." that's it..

I am in full agreement with Publixgirl and Vet. I started at Publix in 1980 and took my retirement in 1992. I wandered around for 10 years looking for a job with the same work ethics and dedicated team atmosphere that Publix cultivates. In 2002 I came back. I am now a Bakery Manager and it's everything I thought it would be. Challenging, grueling at times, but so rewarding when you see another associate learn and thrive. Publix didn't knock on your door and you won't hurt anyones feelings if you quit. But I'll ask you to ponder this. Where else can a high school drop out earn $45,000 a year and still have room to grow? I'm so glad I came back, I still have a chance to earn my million!

I've worked for Publix almost a year now... I have Health Insurance(BCBS)(PPO) Dental(HMO) and Eye Coverage for about 18 bucks a week and I'm part time. I love my job. All my managers are great and they always tell me I that i do good and that I'll be a manager soon (Only have to work 6months full time to be eligible) Its hard sometimes having to go the extra step for customers but I get paid alot more than any other retail job would pay me. I also have 401K..cant wait to start getting stock and bonuses. If you work hard people will start to notice and you'll get raises and move up quick.

The people that complain about Publix need to read the handbook and get their facts straight like 20 yr vet said. Part-timers get benefits, and full timers get more because they devote more to publix. I started out as a cashier and worked my way up. I'll keep taking my tests and will go as high as I can. Publix takes care of its people as long as its people take care of it. They don't ask a whole lot of us. I Love Publix!!!!

WOW I can hardly believe what I see here. From someone with 20 years with Publix, lets reiterate some things. No one knocked on your doors and said "Please come work at Publix" Each and every one of the associates applied for the job. There is no law stating that you have to stay. Please if you don't like it leave. Our company will be a little better place without all the complaining. Most of the comments I have seen here are not even accurate about policy. Please research before you send out erroneous messages. Even part time associates receive benefits, just not as many as FT associates. And there is NO store that has no FT associates. It just can't operate that way. Get your facts strait. And the AVS does rate the department managers. Speaking as one, I can say for sure, that the "competant and successful" associates are usually the ones who barely show up, come out of uniform, and usually end you up in the store managers office because they upset yet another customer. I love PUBLIX and even though it is challenging at times, I wouldn't leave for any reason.

Great point NoFool and PublixDeliClerk. We are a FAMILY, how many other jobs can you feel that way with? Every job, not matter what will have bad managers or people once in a while, but it seems that they "weed themselves out" at Publix. Eventually something happens and then they are gone. Some of our elderly associates make more than our CSstaff because they have been there longer and do a great job! There's nothing on the evaluation that grades you on speed. We all will get older, we all will physically slow down some... it's a fact of life. That's why we have a 401k plan, and that is why Publix GIVES us stock, to take care of us when we retire. And getting dividends on stock that is GIVEN to us is a raise in itself. Remember the $1 dividends! They don't have to give us stock, but they do....because they care about us. Other grocery stores say Merry Christmas here's a bag of grits (It happened to someone I know), while Publix gives us money. If you don't like working for Publix take NoFools advice and find a "better" store...it doesn't exist, and you'll be coming back to your Publix Family. I Love Publix!!

Publix Stock Clerk - I am certain the elderly are rated based on what they are currently capable of doing. Obviously, a 50 y/o stock clerk would not be as quick as the 20 y/o next to him, but his service, pride and integrity will far exceed a case count.

Bottom Line....Publix does not make you work there. If you are unhappy with their policies, procedures and benefits; find another job and stop wasting your time and energy trying to change legally justified policies. It is unfortunate that a few sour managers are placed into their positions, however, that is not the "goal" of Publix Super Markets. I hear Wal-mart is hiring if you'd like to start up a truly justified discussion.

This new 'rating' policy opens age discrimination doors wide. Older employees will naturally face the inevitable slowing physically and will work harder to do the same job......many will see it happen to them in time. However, their 100% efforts and dependability as well as loyalty are qualities that need to be nurtured NOT punished.
The evaluations say you must IMPROVE for a pay raise NOT remain at the same level or less.
I give 110% and not sure when I'm "90" I'll still have that extra 10%.
I know I'm exaggerating alot but my point is getting older and working at your best ability does NOT deserved a paycut.
Unhappy and unsure employees are not the best image for Publix in today's competitive environment.
I've been there a long time and hope to continue....but without a paycut!

PublixStockClerk, if you look at the performance evaluations you will see how difficult it is to get a pay cut. You have to be late, not in proper uniform, be unreliable, and unfriendly, etc. to get a score bad enough...and you have to get it twice, to get a pay cut. Our store has many seniors and handicapped associates working in several departments. They work just as hard as anybody else, and in turn are compensated for it. Stocking is hard, and yes, sometimes the managers try to enforce that faster is better, but that's part of being a stock clerk. The product has to get on the shelf so customers can buy it. If it's too much, there are many other departments that would be happy to have you. In our store, many go up front and cashier or bag, and their happy. You just have to find the right position for yourself. That's one of the great things about Publix; if you're a great employee, they'll work with you, and if you want to go to another department, most of the time they'll do it.

I've been with Publix for almost 10 years now. I've seen people who haven't gone to college become managers, and are making more than enough money to support their families. I've seen college graduates who can't find jobs in thier fields come to work for the company and wish they had never gone to college. The point of any company is if you work hard and are dedicated, follow the rules (every job has them), and voice any concerns, you'll be happy and paid for what you do. Have you looked at the evaluations? If you do your job you're rewarded. It's hard to get a score where you would be docked a quarter... and if you do get docked a quarter, it's because you've had two evaluations that you've had stuff to improve on and haven't! You deserve the dock in pay. And if you have a problem with someone or something, we have a Chain of Command... go to your manager..if you aren't satisfied, go to the next... all of the breakrooms have numbers of RIS's and DM's and other people you can talk to. It's not like there's only one person to talk to. I think our benefits are fair. You only have to average 21 hours a week to keep them. That's not that hard, that's 3 days of work. There's not too many companies you can work for that will just GIVE you stock without having to buy any; and the dividend is money they give you for the stock they've given you!!!! What more do you want? I love Publix. I do my job to the best of my ability, and in turn, Publix takes care of me. YAY PUBLIX!!!!!

It's not that Publix associates hate the place, it's the way they're unfairly treated. Door's always open to store manager, yet, if you go to complain about something every other manager knows about it before you get back to your dept. It's also drummed into our heads that we could lose our job if we get caught eating something that we didn't pay for, however, department managers do it all the time.

As a "senior" worker still throwing stock, I am very concerned about Publix new rating system to cut hourly pay which can likely be the demise of many seniors. If the company didn't want senior in their employ why did they bring them on in the first place? This age discrimination could easily be very harmful to Publix as a company in today's aging world and to our stock price in the future. I list two newspaper articles from St. Petersburg, Florida I'd encourage all employees to read them and to heed the future. By the way, I still love my job I just disapprove of this new salary policy. http://www.sptimes.com/2007/04/09/Business...ay_fallout__R.shtmlhttp://www.sptimes.com/2007/03/25/Business..._new_pay_syst.shtml

How anybody can hate Publix is beyond me! I've worked there for almost nine years now and I love it. The benefits are awesome, especially if you're full time, and moving up at Publix is as easy as taking a damn test! Having bad managers is a fact of life. It could just as easily happen at a bank or lawfirm...that has nothing to do with Publix. Trust me, I have seen bad managers get demoded. If they don't work well with their associates, the store manger or dm will take notice. Not to mention, the stock....HELLO PEOPLE! You earn stock while you're earning money, what more could you ask for? Not everybody is cut out for the retail business, but those that are will agree with me when I say this. Publix is a great place to work! So what its a grocery store? People need food, don't they? It's a business that will never die!

retiredstillworking: Although they are unable to identify the associate, they can identify the department. On your AVS, it does ask your department. It specifically ask questions about the store manager and your dept mgr. Publix does care about the associates, look at your stock return and dividends. There is no way Publix can have the amount of growth and success without its people. But, you also have to have leadership and vision at the top and we have that at Publix. As for managers that lack leadership and lack of professionalism, there careers will be short lived. Last but not least, EVERY associate MUST demonstrate a level of work ethics (attendance, punctuality, initiative, team work, etc) and treat EVERY single customer as if it were the hiring manager. (it's not that hard) That is how Publix was founded and how they still enjoy the success of what Mr. George built for us. remember: "Publix will be a little better or not quite as good because of you"
Thank you Mr. George!

retiredstillworking, you do rate your manager when you complete the yearly voice survey. Several questions refer to your manager and items regarding him/her. When managers have their reviews, this information is factored into their evaluations. You don't hear how that effects a managers review because it is personal to that particular manager. It is the same as a manager not sharing your evaluation with other associates in your department. So you do have a "voice", just use it.

I have no idea why some people want to boycott Publix. All we need is to get to the Jenkins Clan & see if they even care about our problems, of those who still work there. I tried to talk to our D.M. once. I emailed him via the Publix website, told him I needed to talk tohim about some problems in my dept. Asked if he'd call me at home the next day, if he could. Told him the time I'd be home after work. Do you believe he called my house while I was at work? My husband told him I was working, so this stupid D.M. called me at work. Now, how could I tell him of problems in my dept. with my manager right there? We associates get evaluated by our managers. Why can't the associates evaluate our manager too? This could be anonymous. I'm sure the D.M. upon reading it, would know if someone just had a grudge on the manager or if it was really a problem & then would try to fix it. These evaluations could be given out to all associates on their anniversary with an envelope to put it in & seal it, then mail it or drop it off in a box in the breakroom for that purpose. How does everyone feel about this suggestion?

Sounds like a few ex-employees weren't treated like princes and princesses during their time at Publix. I, too, worked for Publix for about a year and a half or so. I was part-time for quite some time and though it sucked... that's how the system works. You have to be part-time for a fair share and then the benefits come rolling in. They aren't the best, but you can't complain too much... it's a freaking grocery store!! My dad has worked there for 28 years, my dad's exwife for 25, my mom did for 18 years... you see where I'm going with this? Obviously there's something there that my entire family has worked there. It's not perfect and I have had that really crappy boss that actually made me quit eventually, but why boycott it?? I still shop there, in fact it is the only place I shop because it's the best there is. My sister and mother moved out of the Publix area and they miss being able to shop there. It's just the best place to go. It's a great jor many, too, it's just not for everyone. It wasn't for me like it was for my family, but I didn't mind the work. It's called WORK for a reason. You also can't tell me that the bosses and CEOs don't care. I've personally seen the Vice President of Publix bagging groceries when the front line was overworked. If some of the managers are a bit hard... well, it's a big business and they have to process hundreds of customers a day. It takes a huge effort and the employees are worked like dogs sometimes. I was a pack mule in that store... underpayed and overworked and definitely underappreciated for my work. I was the lunchmeat and cheese clerk. The only one in the store and I had the Meat RIS and District Manager in there a lot... it was their store. So, my section had to be perfect. It sucked when I got reprimanded once or twice because there was a hole in the shelves and it wasn't absolutely perfect the entire business day, but I did what I had to and when I left at the end of the day... I left it at the store. You should too. There's no reason to boycott Publix. It is just another job you have to endure before you get to the one that suits you best. It's what you make of it... as with all things in life.

Obviously JCAN is a disguntled Liberal, lack of work ethic kind of person. I work for Publix, and just last month, Mr Jenkins was in my store in Sebastian, Fl. The benefits at Publix far outwiegh any I have seen to dat, as I am 42. Stock program is great, 401k is better than alot of them, and the other benefits are alot better than those available. We all know that Liberals want everything, and cannot actually EARN their keep. But Publix is a fantastic company, that, if an associate actually WORKS, and EARNS their pay.....will take very good care of them. The only people that can complain about Publix, are the lazy.... Wake up kids, this world requires you to WORK and EARN your money and benefits. You may expect them to be handed to you, but we are not yet the Socialilst State you want and need so you're laziness is rewarded. Hillary is lying to you......

ex-Publix employee you are pathetic! Talk about no having cahoones! The Jenkins won't reply because your laundry list of excuses are not worthy of a response. I'd recommend you get a grip! If you have a drinking problem get help. If you need to take a leave for bereavement take it. You don't have any case or issues with Publix, your beef is with a couple of unprofessional managers that may or may not be doing there job right. If you had any cahoones you would have gone to their boss with these issues and had them addressed. Publix didn't become one of the top 100 companies in the country by tolerating this type of behavior. Not showing up to work does nothing but leave your fellow stock clerks to carry the rest of your load! by the sounds of it they were already carrying you! Do us a favor and go to Wal-mart!

I worked for Publix from 1998 to 2000 in one of their Jacksonville area stores on the Southside, and I can wholeheartedly say that Publix has to have the worse employment practices anywhere I worked.
I was one of the overnight stockers, and after a year or so they started to get critical of my stocking speed which was right up there with everyone else, so why they were badgering me I have no clue. The criticism got to the point that the G.T.L. (Grocery Team Leader) would actually criticise me over the PA system in front of everyone else in the grocery department and all the other departments that had already arrived toward the store opening! The store managers refused to do anything about the slanderous accusations of poor performance in front of all the other employees! One of the assistant grocery managers would also occasionally taunt me saying things like "You call yourself a stocker?" as he walked by.
The problems with the issues there in conjunction with the death of my father wound up making me resort to drinking heavily, and as soon as they found out, although I voluntarily admitted the problem when the management brought it up and it was strictly off-hours and never on duty, Publix gave me a disciplinary suspension! Publix obviously didn't help matters any with that.
Needless to say, I pretty much abandoned my job there only a few weeks or so later after that counterproductive suspension ended, they made it a living misery to a point where I just stopped reporting in. Some specialists in the legal profession suggested I could of potentially sued Publix for "constructive discharge", but by the time I found that out, a good deal of time had passed.
I would challenge the Jenkins' to respond to this, although they obviously wouldn't have any cahoones to.

My son works for Publix for several years now. Every summer we leave the state to spend some time in a different state where we're supposed to be trying to build a home at. We've been doing this for a number of years now. My son is only considered p/t at Publix. He has to work a number of hours every year to qualify for health benefits. He obtains that usually just before we leave. We are gone about 2 months sometimes. Anything past 1 month leave of absence he's been told he'd then have to start over as a new employee if he returned. This has happened several times now. He's yet to be able to use any of his health benefits due to this. Yes it's our fault that he's had to leave for more then a month every year, but I feel Publix should offer their employees better health insurance. One where they don't have to qualify for it by working a certain number of hours every year. He's a good employee, a hard worker, which is why they keep taking him back every year.

I agree with "employee". Publix is an employee owned company and we take pride in our company and our communities. Publix is commited to being responsible citizens in our communities. Publix has also been consistenly voted as one of the top 100 greatest companies to work for by Forbes magazine for the last decade. Publix offers great opportunities to all members of the community wether they be young, old, handicapped, etc. You will not find another company as committed to its employees as Publix. Publix has an open door policy where their employees are free to communicate with management without the fear of repurcussions. Just because your friend had an unfortunate, isolated incident does not mean that Publix is a bad company to work for. It is exactly the opposite. I've worked for Publix for over a decade. Having done part time and full time I have been allowed the freedom to watch my children grow and be a resonsible parent as well as responsible citizen. The publix corporation appreciates its employees and knows that without them they could not be where they are today. As an employee I have always beleived that and have never been made to feel otherwise.

I guess you should boycott KROGER too and every other food chain that hires a vast majority of age groupes. PUBLIX and MR George Jenkins are a very important part of many communities they have touched. Who helps with Habitat for Humanity, who raises the most for United Way. Not any other food chain! You need to consider all aspects of a company before you critize. Most elderly choose to work those hours and if the elderly need to work for lack of income that is something they choose and want to do. All employees of Publix live and supported by sales and profits, that is our lively hood.

Jcan, I'm sorry you dont approve of our ft/pt policy. Do you realize that publix does not make people get old. They do not make people get sick. They do not make people change their status. Boo Hoo on you. How many large companies do you know that would even give opportunities to as many elderly and handicaped as publix does? Why should Publix or any other company change their policies to passify you. No policy in any company is going to satisfy every associate. Nor will those same policies meet the need of every associate. Publix does it's best to accomidate a broad range of needs of it's associates. Boycotting Publix IS boycotting it's employees. Their salaries are a direct reflection of the business Publix does.

Quick Return Update
We are not boycotting the employee's that work at Publix, but the "CEO's" that are in charge of the infastructure of Publix Super Markets. The one's that make up the policies for the employee's. There are many case's of injustice and unfair practice's that have gone on here. Many previous employee's who read this should reply and tell their stories in the hope of exposing these unfair policies so that other Publix employee's will not have to undergo being ripped-off of their benefits should they suddenly find themselves having to go from fulltime to partime because of a medical problem. To expose Publix's unfair policies will result eventually in a lawsuit against the food-chain. But those who remain silent will surely not benefit when the appropriate time comes when that will occur. Important Note: This article needs to be distributed as much as possible, so those participating please send a link to all your family members as well neighbors to inform them of this injustice. You can remain anonymous if you like, or those of you who have already been duped by the big chain can boldly proclaim your story here on this topic. We are talking about thousands of employee's who have been mislead by the policies in which Publix practice's to this day. Many have already lost their vacation time, and many benefit's that they had accrued before going from fulltime to partime as well having to take a decrease in their hourly pay for doing so. The crux of the problem is that many were never told they would be loosing these benefit's till after they agreed to become partime, at that time they were informed that their accrued vacation time and any other accrued benefit due them during their employment as a fulltime employee would be disgarded once they were partimer's.This is a social injustice to every American worker and it's about time for Americans to start fighting back against the corporate world who dictate's these manipulative policies for the sole benefit of stuffing more monies into their accounts while stripping and burdening the average American worker who is trying to survive. I am urging all of you who have come across this topic to seriously add your replies and bring attention to the injustices of Publix's work ethicsHere is the link to The Boycotting Atrium" where you will be able to become a member or not, and post your stories and reply's. Boycotting PUBLIX is still forthcoming, after a brief summary of investigations of other findings throughout the Corpa's employee grievances. Have a grievance against "PUBLIX" but are afraid to speak out because of job security use a annonymous name but get out your grievances and be heard. There are thousands of employee's that have been raked by the big food-chain. The longer you remain silent the more they victimize the next employee and remain hidden from the real public's eye. Stand up and help others who are in the crosshairs of their corporate bullies. When enough folks are heard something will arrise, but first the evidence needs to be proclaimed. Give what you have here, those of you who have been dominated by this giant bully, what are we asking for, well it sure isn't money as is the practicing policies of PUBLIX for their ceo's and management. Tell your side of the unfair treatment, the policies that were and suddenly weren't. JCAN BOYCOTTING PUBLIX Wed Mar 30, 2005 12:06am This entire discussion is about boycotting "PUBLIX" Supermarkets! There are multiple reasons why the general public should boycott them. Many employee's who have ever worked for this establishment know the many reasons why the general public should boycott this premier food-chain. As with most big corporations the CEO's have no real contact with the average employee that works for them. They are viewed as pawns or figures that can easily be replaced at the drop of a hat. There are many senior-citizens that work for this establishment and are treated with contempt, for an example: There are cases of many of these seniors that have had physical problems that would indicate that there work hours should be either changed or cut down, PUBLIX then as is sited in personal cases, will allow such time cuts but knowingly will not tell the employee that once they have become part-time the accrued vacation time and other benefits such as a Insurance policy will be taken away from them as soon as they become part-time employee's. These seniors as well other employee's lose all that accrued vacation time and money, leaving them with the loss and of course PUBLIX gaining by not paying them what is legally theirs in the first place. There are many workplaces just not PUBLIX that adopt these kinds of manipulations against their employee's all over this nation. PUBLIX is one that I have decidedly chose because it involves a personal relationship of mine of which the person cannot openly say anything for fear of loosing their job and medical benefits of which PUBLIX would immediately take away upon knowing said person. It is with disgust that a company that can be so manipulative in their advertising especially during the holidays would do this kind of dis-service to our elderly who are employed with such a money making gluttenous company. As with other CEO's who break the backs of their employee's while buying up real estate and other expensive toys by the atmosphere that is displayed to the general public belonging totally to the employee's who are responsible for this image. A good company doesn't take advantage of their employee's in these ways, as a rule most, if any still exist, usually empower their employee's by setting up some kind of protection for their asset's. Of course this is the American way. But how a company this big can and will deceive an employee out of their earnings is really a crime in and of itself. Surely if these folks have earned vacation along with pay for the amount of time that is equal to the companies rules for giving the vacations and pay, deny telling these poor seniors that the minute they become a part-time employee again any vacation and pay they have accrued will cease to exist after that day has come. What PUBLIX should do is pay and give the vacations due these employees that have earned it already, and when they come back from their vacations with pay to start as a part-time employee then explain now what they can expect in the way of their benefits. This is an open hose-job done to all employee's of PUBLIX that had to cut their time because of medical problems of which had accrued vacation with pay and where stripped of what was legally theirs to begin with. It's unfair for the general public not to know that this is what PUBLIX is doing to our senior-citizens as well all the other employees who have had similar situations forcing them to become part-timers again and loosing all these benefits that the company had promised when they began as full-time employees. This is to express their anger in which they cannot render a word or be fired........there's more......
