Frank Tenaglia: A bit of trivia for you. You mentioned that your father was born June 23, 1931. The very next day, June 24, 1931, Bing Crosby recorded the song At Your Command, with Harry Barris at the piano. The song was written by Harry Barris, Harry Tobias, & Bing Crosby. Beautiful song. Have you ever heard it?? Ciao.

i just finished watching part 1 a 2 hour dvd bio on toscanini threw my mail rental threw blockbuster.i cant immaging what part 2 is since the first part the 2 hours covered from day 1 till he died a few weeks before age 90.his genuis shall go unmatched.i was amazed at the physical energy he had in his early 80s hikeing uphill with his family etc etc..all business on stage n in rehersal he was the opposite outside that.loved to party play with kids n have fun.the incredable genuis knew by heart over 600 operas n major symphonys..every note its lenth the pacing etc etc n litterly ever word of an opera as he sang along..noo music sheets just memory..the musicians n singers interviewd n there were plenty loaded with praise n respect.the musicians all stated that toscanni had the abilty to bring out in you your playing far better than you ever dreamed you could..he demanded n expected from others what he demanded of himself.perfection.every great conductor of that era held him as number 1.when he went to vienna when the war broke out 5 great conductors went to see his performance together..they agreed saying with toscanni you know 2 things will happen.the music will be to perfection n totaly right..a champion against opression of nazis n fascits he indeed had character..im looking foward to getting in the mail part 2...

Thanks for the info. So the first stereo Met broadacast with Corelli was the 2/16/74 Boheme, with Caballe, Corelli, Niska, & Cossa. Ciao.

Your Dad has the look of a tenor. Makes me think of Luciano's Papa. Was you father a tenor too?

A quote from the history of Metropolitan Opera radio broadcasts on Wikipedia: "With the arrival of 1973/74 broadcasting season (December 1973), all broadcasts were offered in FM stereo."

I'm not sure when the MET began stereo broadcasts in earnest. There were various experiments from the MET stage with this technology earlier, if I recall, including one in the '50s when the MET performed "Carmen" and sent the picture to a few dozen, select movie theaters across America. The sound was also experimental as stereo was used for the first time. At that time stereo was still in its infancy and not perfected but the MET pioneered it for movie theater transmissions. Today, the MET is using that same concept they had over half a century ago but only now the "theatercasts" are in high definition and surround sound.
I remember when the first telecast was shown live from the MET (La Boheme, 1977), stereo sound from the stage was provided to some local FM stations to coincide with the event (I remember FM radio started broadcasting in stereo in the 1960s). TVs did not have stereo capability at the time of that La Boheme and this method of "simulcast", using your tv for the picture and your amp/receiver for the stereo sound, provided a new innovation for MET opera broadcasts. I believe stereo from the MET was with us from then on but the experiments they performed from time to time with it earlier actually set the stage for it.

Fred: I think the Met Broadcasts started in stereo in the mid 1970's. Best, Bill

Fred, I believe radio FM Stereo came into being about 1961. As for the Met, when they first used stereo broadcasts, I don't know.

Here is a question, and I am not sure of the correct answer. What was the date of the first Saturday afternoon Met radio broadcast, in STEREO?? What season did the broadcasts begin in Stereo?? I am not sure. My guess is in 1970, maybe 1969, but that is only a guess. If anyone has the correct answer, please post. Thanks. Ciao. PS - stereo would be on FM radio only, not AM radio.

david yes there are a lot of questions.WHY..if no opera then why not concerts .why was there a 7 year gap without a concert..we can only guess at marios thoughts reflecting back on those non concert years and i think he was disappointed in himself that maybe again he let himself down as well as his artistry..

DAVID i think you ansered your own question of why..depression i guess but true it was a time to get back to work.do you think that tickets for a lanza performance would of been at a premium cost thus no problem at the box office for those 2 performances.if its tosca lets say that month had 11 -12 performances of that opera.lanza was just in 2 the others are tenors of note or to go along with you then all 6 at the same opera house n every year do another great opera house.either way like you said he did not.in that respect i think lanza let himself down...
