Yes, but here there's hope in the proles.
The random (ugly) URLs are the way of acheiving privacy by obscurity for those who want private forums, while keeping it simple such that people don't have to register. There's more about the reasoning
here. True, for public forums, there should be an allowance for shorter or topic-creator-chosen URLs; that's on the to-do list.
We chose to have the edit/delete links show up only when needed (after posting) to keep the posting process as simple as possible. It's true that when there are subscribers, email has already gone out at this point. We labored over this point, and still think it's the best compromise. I'd be interested in more reaction from you or others on this point, because it is a little sticky.
