Thanks Chris for looking that up. I would guess that there is six feet between tables and trees or parking meters, but not the gravel stream in the new gardens. I'll have to put a tape measure in my purse.
I have a whole other attitude about walking since I broke my foot this year and have been out on a knee-walker (awful, terrible mistake), crutches, and then walking very slowly. I can walk now, but I can't rush to get across the street on a flashing light. I have to place my feet very carefully, and I can't afford to slip on misplaced stones. I also can't skip over curbs, but must walk carefully down curb cuts, which makes may path a whole lot narrower than it was before. Going so much slower, I'm seeing the parents pushing strollers, the students walking bikes, the grocery carts, all in competition for a narrower sidewalk. Add to that the street beggars setting up camps and the youthful solicitors in pairs making sure they are standing right in front of me and the new street scape isn't welcoming, it's an obstacle course.
I know that the city council is looking into expanding the new street scape to Davis. Please. Don't.

I didn't, either. Clearly something went wrong.
I knew we would have to wait until both sides of Custer were surveyed, but I haven't seen a postcard yet.

Denise: I received the survey shortly after the neighborhood meeting about parking. But it does seem like the results should be finalized and the restrictions put into place (assuming those who returned the survey were in favor of it) soon. It is very frustrating to not be able to find a single parking spot in the neighborhood. (Although I got home at 7:15 last night and had no problem parking -- 6:30 is early for spaces to be so hard to come by.)

I thought I would give my personal two cents on the topic. I don't mind having to walk around or wait for on coming foot traffic because of the tables, fences and gated off areas. Having the extra tables and these establishments means I can get a table sooner and a treat if I get to eat outside. Not to mention the extra income for the businesses and revenue the city collects. I would say that there should be the minimum width that is required inside the public accessible spaces of the city that accommodates wheelchairs. For the most part Evanston merchants do a good job in keeping the area around their establishment clean and free of snow and ice in the winter.

re: /m27878 Candace: according to the City of Evanston website "The café set up (site plan) must provide for unobstructed passage for pedestrians of a minimum width of 6 feet between the café and any fixture on the sidewalk (parking meter, lamp pole, tree, etc.)" This is further described in the Evanston City Code Title 7 Chapter 2 Section 6(D) Occupation of Public Ways for Business Purposes; Permits. IMHO the City is a bit too lacking in enforcement of pedestrian clearance on sidewalks in the downtown.

Ann, It's official--I have had enough of the lack of parking in the Brummel Park neighborhood! I came home from work at 6:30pm and ended up having to park 2 blocks away. Biggest issue with that is that I am on crutches carrying a small bag with my dinner and I could not legally park anywhere near my home. How many months has it been that we were told that a postcard/questionnaire would be going out and we needed to fill out and send in our responses? It's been 2, possibly 3 months? I don't know about anyone else but I have yet to receive said postcard. I doubt anyone will take away the 4/1-10/31 parking restrictions by the park (although EPD is missing out on a nice revenue stream right now as there are several cars there every night starting hours before 9pm)but it is not fair to keep those of us living in this neighborhood waiting for something to be done! And why does Evanston Awning have a large truck parked on the street? It is fully rigged to carry awnings thus should be considered a commercial vehicle. And yet, nothing is done. So much attention paid to Buddha heads and this remains unresolved. PLEASE--can we move this along?

You are right John, it's Orrington, I should know I used to work at the Borders when it was there. And no, I don't have a telephoto lens. I would like to take a tape measure to a couple of places on Church street and measure from pebbles to sidewalk cafe, especially around Dixie Kitchen. If there's room for two people to walk side by side I'd be surprised. There's no reason for our sidewalks to be so full of useless stuff if we are asking people to be pedestrians, to take a walk for a few blocks from the garages to a store or restaurant. I'd like to know if there was a direction to the design firm to leave a specific number of inches of sidewalk for walking. Is there a minimum space requirement between table and chairs (such as in front of Celtic Knot) and one of those ridiculous little lights? Because it can be brutal walking down that street, especially if you meet up with a stroller, a dog on a leash, or a wheelchair coming from the other direction.

Candace: Your first picture looks like JT's at 1639 Orrington (not Chicago Ave.). Where was the second picture taken? Church St. looking west, between Sherman and Orrington?
It does look like lots of street-bling, and not necessarily a lot of thought into the side effects. Your pictures appear to be telephoto shots that tend to compress lots of depth into one shot, making it look somewhat busier than it actually is.

Yes, Michele, you are correct.
Missing person was found(5-18-13) by CPD at Touhy & Kedzie. Missing was not injured but transported by CFD for evaluation. CEF cancelled. This effort was a community one and Dan Coyne from ridgeville park dist really facilitated the search efforts.
There is always criticism about police reaction to missing people, the 24 hour rule, etc. Jason Parrott and J Wazny at EPD jumped right on this. Jennifer at the patch was amazing. The CPD found mr Rodriguez, thank goodness. Thank you.

We don't often talk about Chicago PD and how much we depend on them - but want to say I noticed, while we were walking our dog to Pottawattomie, that CPD had cruisers out, clearly looking carefully for someone. I can only assume it was our missing senior. Good work on their part - the report says he was found at a hospital, but I'm guessing that was after CPD took him there.

Here is what I mean with the little rain gardens under the trees. They are replacing the grates under the trees, and it seems with the little plantings and the pebbles and to help guide water to the trees. These plantings are replacing the large planters? Probably not. But, they come out farther than the square grates around the trees meaning that another six inches of sidewalk is lost to strollers and wheelchairs, a whole six inches of sidewalk, just become useless and for what? I don't get it. Pretty little stones for the children to go after, for the dogs to piddle on, to be dislodged when the snow is shoveled. Won't that be fun tripping over stones in the bike lanes. Is there a budge for replacing them every spring, and that's a serious question.
All this very elaborate street decor. And not one new bench. Not one. Where would you put them now, I wonder, is there any room for a bench? Our street beggars don't seem to need benches to set up shop on the corner and outside of CVS, but it sure would be nice to have then near the bus stops.

What's wrong with this photo? Here we have Chicago Ave. where a new restaurant has opened in a long vacant spot. There's even a small sidewalk cafe. Many of the new little street lights have been installed and a few little bike racks. The new rain gardens have been planted in the sidewalk, with pebbles and flowers. Pretty, right. It looks so safe and appealing.
Could you push a double stroller down this street. How about walking your bike? Could two people walk down it holding hands? When the bike racks are moved off of a corner and spread down the street, then the bikes take up walking space on the sidewalk. The outdoor cafes, which are certainly attractive now earn money for the restaurant while stealing walking space from the pedestrians. Even those new streetlights, if you look very closely, are further from the curb than the trees, that is, they make the sidewalk narrower, especially on Church street.
It's pretty, but it makes busy Evanston sidewalks even slower, especially now that we have to avoid the dozen young people needing just "a moment of your time". I'm walking very slowly now with my foot healing. Today I saw a jogger going down the protected bike lane, which is insane. Bikes now should have to watch out for cars, buses, pedestrians, strollers and joggers? Waiting for the bus at the corner of Benson and Davis, where there used to be a very nice bench for people with sore feet, I saw a car park right in front of the 7-11 in the bike lane so the driver could make a quick purchase. I doubt if he would have done so if it was painted green.
I know that the city council is looking closely at the costs of putting those dumb little lights, 15 of them on a block, on Davis and my vote is no. Before anyone does I highly suggest a walk down the sidewalks on a busy Saturday like today and so how much you like having to dodge bikes parked every on every other step, strollers and joggers. All that bikers really need or want is one large bike rack on one corner of an intersection. It really doesn't bother us to cross a street or walk a ways down a block. The more room on the sidewalk for walking bikes, strollers, wheelchairs, and lovers the better.

To keep you informed, Carlos is still missing. The police department specifically commanders Wazny and Parrot are issuing a media release. they also have an officer checking the video feeds from both cameras at Brummel and at Howard Street and maybe some others I'm not sure. There has been reported sighting of Carlos at Howard and Western.
I have alerted all Howard businesses.

On another note, is anybody else curious about the crime report today? What was up with that? Unexpected lava flow down Asbury requiring passers-by to parkour from car to car? A re-enactment of the Levi's Walk The Line commercial? Grizzly bear browsing through cars in hopes of finding a twinkie stash?
(sorry, not to make light of the people who needed to file police reports - but seriously, I wonder what that story was...)
