Oh My! For those who are not familiar with this magnificiant facility, you should go on a field trip.
Yes, there is a very large computer room where lessons are provided and where members can otherwise use the computers. They are all brand new. Keep in mind - this is a senior centor with after hours use allowed by non seniors. Evanston Children's theater uses the building and I see lots of brownies and other scouts there in the evening.

Mike - As a member of the Levy center - I would say let everyone use it - helps keep taxes down - too many people here think we need to duplicate a service since it is not in their neighborhood. People need to travel around Evanston to use various services. We don't need any more branch libraries. If people want the branch library experience they can use one, if they prefer the main library they can use it. The council spent several million to correct the children room at the main library- I would not be suprise if as many children use the North branch as the main branch.

Has anyone noticed a change in the timing of the traffic lights at Howard and Custer? The Howard red light has been extended and has backed traffic up (at times) all the way to Clyde. I know this isn't in my head, timing has been changed for about a week now........

Having used the bathrooms at the South Branch, it boggles the mind to imagine how that building could be remodeled in order to make them handicap compliant. Room for a wheelchair? I think they would have to totally rebuild a wall and put in a whole new bathroom from the floor up, including a new door. Frankly, the entire room would have to be redesigned.
Levy Center is terrific for seniors during the day, and I've taken classes there in the evening, seen plenty of folk using the excersize room and attended many parties and concerts there. It's a busy, busy place already. It would be interesting to know how close to capacity it's spaces and time slots already are. Pretty close, I bet.

Candace - it has been argued that because of the configurations and the given space that the bathrooms cannot be made accessible.

Another idea regarding traffic. South Bound Chicago (Clark) at Howard. This intersection is perfect for a Right turn only lane. As Chicago transition to Clark in Chicago, the two lanes merge into one anyway. A right turn lane at SB Clark would help alleviate traffic conflict as the lanes merge, and might also facilitate traffic flow for people going West on Howard.

Hi Ann,
There is a "left arrow" for north bound Clark traffic (going west onto Howard), but for south bound traffic on Chicago there is no arrow that I've ever seen.
I agree with Scott, designating a right turn lane (on Chicago Ave) would reduce the "drag racing" of people trying to cut each other off as the two lanes merge to one.

from Public Works, John Burke re Custer Howard traffic signals
Alderman Rainey - Tom Twigg spent some time at the intersection this morning and found no problems with traffic back ups due to the signals. He reports that the intersection runs fixed time, running off of an old electrical mechanical controller. The Custer street green time is very short, just enough time to allow the pedestrians to cross safely - which maximizes the amount of traffic processed by the intersection. He did not witness any delays to the Howard street traffic due to the Custer green time. Also, given the old electrical mechanical controller that is out there - time-of-day change to the signal timing is not likely. We will put in a call to the City of Chicago just to confirm that there have been no changes to the existing operation.

Ann,
Thanks for the call into public works for Howard/ Custer signal. I know I'm not nuts, but the light timing has been altered. As far as traffic back up's I will be glad to take a photo for Mr. Burke of the backed up traffic to clyde. I can tell you traffic is at it worst on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and of course during evening rush...

Frankly, I don't see how it could be done, even if the entire space was gutted. Maybe with a new floor built in the second room to match the height of the entry room, and then an approach around the side to where the plumbing already is. Part of the problem in that front room, if I'm remembering right, is that there is a stairwell right next to the bathroom. It would certainly be a puzzle.
Don't get me wrong, the South Branch is a very cozy space, but cozy is the correct term. Perfect for a senior reading room, and a stop off for young families to get picture books. But for anyone in a wheelchair? Nope.
