Michelle, The hum is much deeper pitch- more related to industrial machinery- and from a longer distance than the light pole. From our building in the 700 Dobson block, it seems that it is coming from slightly more east, and definitely north from here. Maybe if others can also determine the direction the sound is coming from, we could get a little closer to the source. It really is an annoying sound. Dana and Andrew, where are you (and what floor of the building are you on) and where does the sound seem to be coming from?

The hum: Take a walk, or a bike ride, or drive, and track it down! The weather is beautiful for the next few days. Pack a lunch. Bring the family. Print T-shirts.

I am in a ranch house on the 1400 block of Mulford -- near Leah Lomar Park. The sound is strongest from in the back (South) end of the house. It also seems to me like is it East of here, which supports what others are saying.
I have difficulty falling asleep because of the noise.

I don't hear the hum while outside due to ambient noise. Only from inside the house, which blocks out most traffic sounds.
I drive a Prius, so maybe I can drive around and then stop various places after it switches into battery mode and is silent. If I do it late enough at night, there should be less ambient noise.
Hey, Ann, want to join me?

Some daylight "hum" is coming from the rodding crew on Ridge; they are using heavy duty machinery down the sewer and the low rumble is audible from blocks away.

no Dana - I have spent considerable time and staff time on the hum. I think it would be great if you and others affected could take this matter into your own hands. I have never heard the noise and until now - you are the only one I have ever heard complain. My suggestion is that the focus be on CTA electrical and the Wesley com ed facitiy.
BTW Dana - I am certain you told me that the noise you were hearing was from the west of you. Let me know when you have identified the source and I will work with the entity to insulate.

I heard a hum on the south side of our building for much of the spring and summer as well, but I just assumed that the air conditioners were running continuously in a vacant unit in the building next to us. It could have been what you are describing, or maybe it is the air conditioners. We're on the 100 block of Custer.

Does "aggravated unlawful use of a weapon" mean he shot or shot at someone? Did the crime happen at that address or is that just where he was arrested?

Rachel: you all should be concerned regardless. The guy had a fully loaded gun at that address. He said the reason he had a loaded gun was for protection having been shot at recently.
Who knows what he has been doing lately. We do know he had a loaded gun at 725 Brummel = a 20 year old thug. Perhaps I am over reacting - perhaps we are getting used to this. Keep in mind - the only way there are shots heard or people shot is because there was person with a loaded gun.
Just trying to keep you informed.

Man blasts neighbor's window with shotgun - from Evanston Now Bill SmithThursday, Sep. 18, 2008, at 5:31 pm
An Evanston man is due in court next week after being arrested on firearms charges.
Evanston police say that about 11 p.m. Monday night a 19-year-old man living in the 1900 block of Lee Street told them that a man from the neighborhood who he'd quarreled with earlier in the evening had appeared at his door with a shotgun and had shot out a window in the house before fleeing the area on foot.
Police say they spotted a man matching the description of the suspect nearby in the 900 block of Dodge Avenue and noticed what appeared to be a rifle barrel protruding from his pants.
After a struggle, the officers managed to take the man into custody and recovered a shotgun they say the man had concealed down his pants.
The suspect, who police identified as Randall Etienne Lauture, 24, of 928 A Dodge Ave., faces a variety of charges including unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, aggravated and reckless discharge of a fiream and resisting arrest.
He's scheduled to appear in Skokie district court at 9 a.m. next Thursday, Sept. 25.

Rachel, I called Officer Pillars - according to him, it was really good work on the part of the NET team - they were patrolling the area and saw the guy between two buildings acting suspiciously, made a routine stop - he ran, they gave chase, caught him, and they recovered the gun after a search. Terrific job on the part of the officers.
Ann is right, it's another reminder to report any suspicious activity and continue to be vigilant. EPD are doing a terrific job, we need to help them all we can.

Ann, regarding your previous post; I say that there is no such thing as overreacting when we're talking about a fully loaded gun. Thanks for keeping us informed.

Thanks Ann.
That's nuts. Loaded guns and a shotgun fired at a window by a felon....really scary.
If that's not enough, I was riding my mountain bike to James Park last night on Mulford west bound (between Asbury and Dodge), where I almost had a head on collision by with a large white Lincoln. The car was driving on the right side of the road (my side, his left), and had a burned out headlight. Luckily, he swerved just in time to miss me I guess after hearing me scream my "iminent death scream". I had lights on my bike and was riding on the right hand side of the road (Mulford two-laned in that area). The guy stopped after the near miss and tried to lecture me "You bikers need to be more careful" All this coming from an old guy in a large car riding on the wrong side of the road with a headlight that was out. I was absolutely furious and I think I scared him off before he could continue his tirade. I did not get his plates.
Anyway, in retrospect he was right. We bikers need to be more careful on the streets with nuts like this driving our neighborhood streets. Be careful out there everyone with the shortening days.

Has anyone else noticed that Evanston's beggars are getting very aggressive these days? We keep running into the guy who wants to sell you his poetry, and the other day he was really mean and cursing at one of the women bus drivers.
Today, the guy who claims to be hungry and walks all over town saying "excuse me ma'am" tried to talk to me as I was putting money in the transit card machine at the Davis CTA station and then cursed me out when I refused. Money must be tighter these days or these guys must have worn out their welcome and need to try fresher terrority.
