Didn't the community previously want Trader Joe's in this space? They have quite a sizable beer and wine department and that didn't appear to be an issue.
I understand people have concerns, but I've been to a Farmers Best Market and comparing them to a Walgreens isn't close to accurate. This is not going to be a 24 hr liquor mart. This is primarily a very nice food store with a small beer/wine department.
Let's not lose sight of what a great addition this will be to our community. The many neighbors I have talked to are thrilled. If you're still unsure maybe it's time for a trip to one of the other Farmers Best Markets.

Also Candace thank you for sharing your squirell story, It just may become a tradition on this great 8th board and in fact we may soon be considered some of the best squirel story tellers around especially wih the very large hearts that many Evanstonians have for these aggresive litle rscals. I think these squirels have decided that for all practical purposes they are our unofficcial protected species whether they behave themselves or not.Hope we here more squirel sories from time to time,

Candace, when you were mentioning the outside landscaping, I'm surprised you didn't mention bike racks!
And don't talk to Rachel and I about squirells (sp?). They made a nest in her new car's engine compartment, chewed insulation, and are nibbling on our porch, railings and deck table. Grrr.

My preference is that the new store should have a liquor license. And, if you'll allow me one moment to brag, last week the Chicago Reader named our theatre company Chicago's Best Emerging Theatre Company for 2008. Please check out what they said: http://www.chicagoreader.com/bestofchicago08/theater/emerging/If you know of anyone who might be interested in serving on the Board of said Best Emerging Theatre Company (which is actually headquartered in Evanston) please send them my way. There's an email link on our site: http://www.petheatre.com/Now, Rachel, see how right you were about Hamlet?

I look forward to having a nice place to buy wine and beer in our neighborhood! I really hope Farmer's Best decides to carry microbrews and organic or imported wine -- then they'd really have my business. Binny's is good but far away, Dominick's is okay but tends toward standard brands, and Whole Foods has a creative selection but is overpriced.
South Evanston needs a full-service, quality store. Count me in as one of the neighbors who SUPPORTS a liquor license for this establishment!

So sorry, I do love wine and some of my best friends love beer but, the only good squirrel is a dead squirrel. There, I said it again.
This year all my hanging baskets were planted with the coconut lining. This is the #1 choice of squirrels for making nests. Do you see where this is going. GRRRRRR.
PS: I have never laid a hand on the distructive creatures.

Regarding /m13660 -- did anyone hear or see the mosquito abatement trucks go through last night? The weather was questionable, so I thought they may have postponed it (the website says nothing about that). Just wondering if we need to keep our windows closed tonight or some other night, or if they're done. Drove past the new grocery a couple times last night and there are a bunch of very enthusiastically bright signs up in the windows. It already looks better. Do they have any plans for the pharmacy drive-through? I see a 24-hour drive-up cheese window ...

Tom, I saw no sign of them, but we had all the windows closed so if they came after I was asleep, I wouldn't have noticed.
Can we get squirrel abatement trucks? Now that they have started eating our deck furniture, we have been taking our cat outside and encouraging her to rub her scent on everything on our deck. We'll see if that helps!

Why would someone presume that I would not want beer or wine sold at the new store? Who is this guy and does he know all the people in this neightborhood? Evanston will now be getting some of my tax money instead of Chicago. Can't wait for the store to open, I love that they've already put signs up. See y'all at the meeting.

Cyndi - Anjana and I have received concerns from 2 housholds and 1/2 of a third. We have tried to do our best to explain our efforts. One of the reasons the concerns were generated had to do with the Ev Review reporting the store was granted a liquor license. The objectors said we knew nothing of this and there should have been a neighborhood meeting. Once we explained - no license has been issued and there is a meeting planned, some concerns were alleviated.

re spraying:
Ann -
We were able to spray some of the area last night before we had call it a night due to the weather. We will announce tomorrow the areas to be treated on Thursday, July 10, once we have had chance to check our GPS printouts of what actually got covered.
For the future, please contact me directly. That way you will get the fastest reply possible.

9th Ward--I vote for the liquor license too (maybe limited to wine and beer as space will be an issue) but Asbury St. Market did not sell anything alcoholic except vanilla.

Cathy - only beer and wine and it will be limited, due to space as you noted.

It's important to note that perhaps this was one reason why Asbury Market didn't make it - if you don't get enough traffic, produce goes bad quickly - beer and wine can help increase traffic.
I do a lot of cooking with wine, hope they have some inexpensive varieties, but can't wait to support this store!
