Barbara Kerr is Joan, a writer/editor, and Bradley J. Thomas is Nick, a captain in the New York Fire Department who lost so many men in the collapse of the World Trade Center that he can hardly bear the pain. But as the captain, he has to deliver the eulogies at their memorial services. He can't find the words, and that's where Joan comes in.

She has felt helpless since the tragedy, which occurred a week before the events in the play. No one needs her blood, or anything else she can give. "Intellectuals to the back of the line," she remarks during one of her monologues. So when she learns that she can give her words, of course she says yes.

In the process of writing the eulogies, the firefighters -- who have been elevated by the tragedy into heroes that their captain can't even recognize -- become real people again. They live again. It's a beautiful piece of writing.

Cityslob: Your posting about the bronze sculptures being placed in the vicinity of ground zero shows that I'm not the only one using bronze sculptures for 9/11 events. Using scriptural quotes in my memorial presentation should not be a question of heated discussion, but there were a couple of Flight 93 posters who questioned this. (as you most probably noticed.)

I'm glad I followed the Mission Statement of Flight 93 and put in the scriptures to cover the requirement of hope.

Also, I noticed previously that you showed from the news that Daniel Libeskind is getting the commission to rework the Hummingbird Centre in Toronto. The Toronto news therefore received a wider spread thanks to your coverage
of news outlets.

Thanks again for your dedicated work on the WTC Memorial, WTC, and 9/11 events.

State to decide on West St. tunnel
The state Department of Transportation is expected to announce plans for the West Street/Route 9A tunnel early this week.

The tunnel, originally proposed to direct traffic away from the World Trade Center memorial, has drawn opposition from Battery Park City residents, who oppose any tunnel, and from Goldman Sachs. The securities firm wants the north portal of the tunnel moved so it will not interfere with Goldman’s proposed headquarters.

The Alliance for Downtown New York supports the original design.

Sept. 11 memorial turned down for Jersey City waterfront
Teardrop sculpture caused controversy
Monday, February 14, 2005
By Maria Zingaro Conte
Journal staff writer

After more than a year of debating the artistic and social merits of a Sept. 11 memorial offered to the city free of charge, Jersey City officials have turned down an offer to install the 100-foot-tall sculpture on the city's waterfront.

The roughly nine-story sculpture entitled, "To the Struggle Against World Terrorism," was created by Russian artist Zurab Tsereteli.

Known informally as the "Tear of Grief" for the 40-foot glass teardrop that hangs from an opening in the center of its rectangular bronze block frame, the piece was slated to be installed at the base of the pier at J. Owen Grundy Park. Nine large steps, inscribed with the names of those who died at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and on American Airlines Flight 93 in Pennsylvania, were to be installed at the monument's base.

But plans to erect the monument in Jersey City were scrapped last month when City Council President L. Harvey Smith sent a letter to Tsereteli, declining his offer to give the city the monument.

"I sent a letter to the artist telling him that the sense is that the Jersey City municipal council doesn't want to place the tear where it was planned, so we left it up to him to find another location," Smith said.

/m83 City do you think this could be Rolfe? He sent Me and trin a glass tear drop sculture light (made overseas but designed my him) for Christmas. He also used the teardrop design in the WTC competition. The measurements of the tear are on a 9-11 scale. Interesting HUH?

How come I never received a glass teardrop? I mean, after all, I am Spanky, taking on the mighty LMDC pro se in the Appellate Division. City, what do I have to do to get one?

An Overseer Is Chosen for All Work Downtown
By DAVID W. DUNLAP

Published: February 15, 2005

James Estrin/The New York Times
Charles J. Maikish, named executive director of the Lower Manhattan Construction Command Center.

harles J. Maikish, a former Port Authority official who was responsible for rebuilding the World Trade Center after the 1993 terrorist attack, was named yesterday to oversee rebuilding throughout downtown.

He is to be the first executive director of the Lower Manhattan Construction Command Center, created three months ago by Gov. George E. Pataki and Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg to bring some order to the building, demolition and roadwork in one of the city's densest and most constricted quarters.

Neighbors and businesses have despaired about the prospect of so much work occurring simultaneously that streets will become impassable, noise will become deafening and the air will grow thick with dust, if not hazardous contaminants.

"Within six months, we're going to have so much construction down here that it's good he's coming now," said Madelyn Wils, the chairwoman of Community Board 1. She said: "Charlie is direct. He's a person of action. And when he starts this job, it will come together fairly quickly. He knows who he needs to talk to."

Santiago Calatrava’s Favorite Bridges

Most New Yorkers who followed the World Trade Center redevelopment efforts have settled into a mood of weary resignation. The cynics among us, possessing perfect 20/20 hindsight, feel the outcome (gargantuan office tower, appropriate memorial, copious retail) was somehow preordained, and perhaps it was. Amid all the squabbles and compromise, there was one undisputed triumph: the arrival of Santiago Calatrava. His transportation hub--a majestic glass and steel structure that will hover like a bird, wings-outstretched--is almost certain to become a landmark when completed in 2009. Recently Metropolis executive editor Martin C. Pedersen called Calatrava at his studio in Zurich, and spoke with him about his New York work and love of bridges, as well as the importance drawing plays in his creative process.

You have two New York projects, the transit hub downtown and the residential tower on South Street. How are those progressing?

Very well. At South Street, [developer] Frank Sciame has his permits from the city, everything he needs so that he can start the process of developing the building. We hope to break ground this year. If we start building in June, we would be able to finish by the end of 2007.

Memorial display remembers 9/11
By Eddie Beeby
Published: 2/15/2005

The State University of New York College of Environmental Sciences and Forestry is temporary host to a World Trade Center memorial display.

The memorial exhibit, called Reflecting Absence, will be on display in Moon Library on the ESF campus until Feb. 24. The display includes models and 3-D renderings of the four-acre memorial that will be built on the site of the former World Trade Center in remembrance of the victims lost in the Sept. 11, 2001 and Feb. 26, 1993 terrorist attacks. The memorial is scheduled for completion in 2009.

"It's a big replacement of the twin towers," said Erika Cologgi, a sophomore majoring in wild life science at SUNY-ESF. "If you knock it down once, we'll build it again."

After Feb. 24, the display will be put on exhibit in Watertown before it ends up on permanent display in the World Financial Center across the street from the former site of the World Trade Center. Gov. George E. Pataki and the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, which is constructing the memorial, decided to put the display on tour to let the citizens of New York state know what was going to be built, said Dave White, representative for SUNY-ESF.

"(Pataki's) intention is to move it about the state to get the public involved," said Richard Hawks, chairman of the Landscape Architecture Department at SUNY ESF.

The World Trade Center Memorial Foundation, which will own and operate the memorial, is funded through donations, White said. The World Trade Center Foundation includes Pataki, former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg and former presidents Bill Clinton, Gerald Ford, George H. W. Bush and Jimmy Carter, Hawks said. The tour was also started in order to raise funds for the memorial's construction, which is estimated to cost $500 million.
