Larry-Thanks for the message on the old board. Thought I'd give this one a test run.
Thanks to every one for a great New Year's Day paddle. I've had colder trips in June!
See you at the pool

John: Glad you could make the New Year's Day paddle. It really was a georgous day.The credit for the new message board goes to Adam for setting it up. Hopefully the pool sessions will work out. Last year everyone seemed to have a good time. This will be a test run also on this board. Larry.

Someone had requested information on the KCC pool sessions for 2005. Here is the latest info:

Pool Sessions - 2005.
This year the KCC will be offering pool sessions at the Body Zone Sports and Fitness Center located at 3103 Paper Mill Road in Wyomissing. Take route 222 to the Spring Ridge Road exit. Go up to Paper Mill Rd., turn right and the fitness center will be on the right hand side. It is very easy to find and there is plenty of parking. The pool sessions are scheduled for Sunday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00pm. White water kayaks, recreational kayaks and canoes are all welcome. There will be six sessions and these are scheduled for 2/13, 2/20, 2/27 3/6, 3/13, and 3/20. Other details include:
• Cost of each session will be $10.00 per person. Youth 15 years of age and younger the cost will be $5.00. Children must be supervised. Last year we gave each participant a wrist ribbon when signing in. This lets us know that you registered for the evening and more importantly that the waiver form has been signed. It can be difficult to get a pool for the roll sessions. We appreciate the Body Zone letting us use their facilities.
• Participants must be members of the KCC. Membership forms will be available at the pool sessions. New and renewal memberships are $15.00.
• Boats must be clean before use in the pool. Please rinse off your boat and make sure the inside is clean. Someone suggested the car wash is a great place to clean your boat.
• You may not get into your boat on the pool deck and slide it into the pool. This may damage the tiled surface. There is a ramp at the shallow end of the pool which makes getting into a boat very easy.
• Everyone must be out of the pool by 8:45 and have exited the building by 9:00pm. You may use the large whirl pool any time during the evening.
• Something new this year is to designate two sessions, 3/13 and 3/20 for recreational kayaks and sea kayaks to practice wet exits and techniques of getting back into your boat. White water kayaks are still welcome at these sessions and recreational kayaks may still be used at any of the other sessions.
Hope to see you at the pool. For additional information please call Larry March at 610-777-1930 or John Ketner at 610-678-0250.

Quoted from Joe Pylka's post on Phila Canoe Club BBS:

"If you are a paddler who uses the Delaware River, please come to a public meeting this Thursday evening at the Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve just above Washington Crossing State Park on the PA side, off Rte 32 below New Hope. Refreshments will be served beginning about 6:30 with a presentation at 7 pm followed by breakout sessions. We want your input regarding various aspects of paddling this river, plus we want to get you acquainted with the trail concept."

New meeting place and date for the KCC:
Beginning this January the KCC will be meeting at the Reading First Church of the Brethren at 2200 State Hill Road. The location is very easy to find. From the Route 422 by pass, take the State Hill Road exit and travel west towards State Hill. Look for Boscov’s store at the exit. The church is about one mile away from the by pass and will be on the left side of State Hill Road. Another land mark is Arner’s Family Restaurant (on the left) which you will go by and the church will be about two blocks past this. Walmart is also close by. Another change is that we will be meeting on the 4th Tuesday. Therefore our next meeting will be January 25th, 2004. Meeting time will remain at 7:00pm.
You may be wondering why the change. We had been meeting at the Red Cross in Reading. Unfortunately we could not always be guaranteed a meeting room there. Some of the advantages of moving to the First Church of the Brethren is that we are guaranteed a meeting place in the Fellowship hall and the parking lot is lighted and there is plenty of space. Our new location is easy to find and the KCC may use the kitchen and we can accommodate large groups if necessary. So mark your calendar for January 25th and come out and see our new meeting site. Any questions please call Larry March at 610-777-1930.

I will bring the tickets to the next meeting of the KCC which will be on January 25th at our new location. See message #8 for the new meeting place and message #6 concerning the film festival.

Thanks Larry- the church is very near where I work, so maybe I 'll get to swing by some evening,

Does anybody have or know where I can find a Loon 111 seat? My neighbor needs one. He's checking with Kelly's where he bought his boat but otherwise no other leads. I've posted on paddling.net, boatertalk, npmb and ebay wanted.

The Horseshoe Trail hike scheduled for this Sunday, January 23rd, 2004 has been postponed till next Sunday, January 30, 2004. This is due to the possible snow storm. The next section is near Hershey and would be a trek to drive to in the snow. So enjoy the snow closer to home. Thanks.

Tuesday, January 25th will be the first meeting of the Keystone Canoe Club for the 2005 calendar year. The meeting will be held at The First Church of the Brethren at 7:00pm. This is located on State Hill Road almost across the street from Walmart and is about two miles west of the 422 by pass. Our guest speaker is Tami Jo Shimp, Director of Development for the Berks County Conservancy. The Conservancy has been serving this community for 29 years in a variety of ways - water quality, land and open space preservation, historical preservation, educational programs and the revitalization of out towns and cities. I think you will find this program educational and interesting. Light refreshments will be served. If you have any questions you may call Larry March at 610-777-1930. Hope you can attend.

Pool sessions at Owen J. Roberts Middle School:
This year as part of the community swim program the Middle School pool will be open to boaters to practice rolling. The sessions will be on six Tuesday nights: March 1,8,15,22,29 and April 5th. Hours are from 7:30 to 9:30pm. Cost is $5.00 per session. Located in Bucktown, Pennsylvania the Middle School is easy to locate. It is approximately an hour from Reading and Allentown. Take route 100 south past Pottstown. At the junction of routes 100 and 23,(Bucktown), turn left at the light and proceed about one half mile. The Middle School will be on your left. Turn left and looking up the hill the pool is on your right. There are solar collectors visible on the roof. You may unload you boat at the bottom of the hill and park in the parking lot located by the administration building. For additional information call Larry March at 610-777-1930.

Dear Keystone Canoe Club Members,

First of all, I'm looking forward to speaking with many of you at your club meeting, Tuesday, March 22.

Secondly, the paddling community needs your IMMEDIATE help. You may have heard about the great proposal the Army Corps made last Thursday night concerning the much-expanded whitewater release program proposed for 2005.

If you haven't already seen the release schedule proposed for 2005, please see below - it is a good start. This is considered a trial year, so many people are excited - especially the boating community.

Certain vocal interests are arguing against the May and June releases based on the idea that newly-formed spawning grounds may be adversely affected.

The paddling community absolutely needs to respond in support of the May and June releases. Let's tell the Army Corps of our support.

The Army Corps is counting these responses to the proposal, in favor and against. It is really important for the future of this arrangement that YOU (yes you), write a few quick emails!

So please, take a minute a send an email to the Army Corps in positive support for the plan they have proposed. Thank them for their efforts. Keep your notes short, to the point, and positive. They are listening, to be sure, and the more messages they get from supportive boaters, the more they will be solid in their position.

Send emails to:

Frank Cook - francis.p.cook@nap02.usace.army.mil

Christine Tingle - christine.y.tingle@nap02.usace.army.mil

George Sauls - george.a.sauls@usace.army.mil

Here is the Schedule, for your convenience...

All weekends in May and June
July 2 & 3
July 23 & 24
Aug. 6 & 7
Aug. 20 & 21
Sept. 3 & 4
Sept. 17 & 18
Oct. 1 & 2

For more specific information, look at this Army Corps site

http://www.nap.usace.army.mil/Projects/FEWalter/index.htm

Thank you for writing and making this a reality!

Lehigh River Release Schedule 2005

I lifted this from the LVCC website message board www.enter.net/~lvcc

Yesterday (March 9th) negotiations between DCNR and the Fish Commission took place. This is the information that I received today, DCNR is drafting a letter that will be going out to all parties and the LVCC should have a copy soon.
Based upon the information that I received, the 2005 release schedule looks like this:

(run of the river is inflow = outflow)

Prior to April 18: Run of river
April 18-22: 250 cfs
April 23-24: Run of river
April 25-29: 250 cfs
April 30 - May 1: Run of river
May 2-6: 250 cfs (or run of river at 1335)
May 7-8: Run of river
May 9-13: 250 cfs (or run of river at 1335)
May 14-15: 750 - 1000 cfs
May 16-20: 250 cfs (or run of river at 1335)
May 21-22: Run of river*
May 23-27: 250 cfs (or run of river at 1335)
May 28: 750 - 1000 cfs
May 29: Run of river (but not less than 500 cfs)
May 30 - June 3: 250 cfs (or run of river at 1335)
June 4-5: Run of river*
June 6-10: 250 cfs (or run of river at 1335)
June 11-12: 750 cfs
June 13-17: 250 cfs (or run of river at 1335)
June 18-19: Run of river*
June 20-24: 250 cfs (or run of river at 1335)
June 25-26: 750 cfs
June 27-July 1: 250 cfs (or run of river at 1335)
July 2-3: 750 cfs
July 4-22: 200-250 cfs (or run of river at 1335)
July 23-24: 750 cfs
July 25-August 5: 200-250 cfs (or run of river at 1335)
August 6-7: 750 cfs
August 8-19: 200-250 cfs (or run of river at 1335)
August 20-21: 750 cfs
August 22-Sept 2 200-250 cfs (or run of river at 1335)
Sept 3-4: 750 cfs
Sept 5-16: 200-250 cfs (or run of river at 1335)
Sept 17-18: 750 cfs
Sept 19-30: 200-250 cfs (or run of river at 1335)
October 1-2: 750 cfs

* Fish Commission refused to agree to a planned 750+ release every weekend in May and June. Saving a little water on the first and third weekends of June is planned to assure the traditional release weekends (the 2nd and 4th weekends in June) actually happen. The Mother's Day weekend in May isn't a critical one since few boaters are on the river anyway, and with all the intervening weekends being at "run-of-river" there's a pretty strong chance there will be close to 500 cfs or more anyway.

May 29 (Sunday) was set at 500 cfs rather than 750. The Fish Commission was particularly concerned about the in-lake stability around the end of May, which they consider to be the critical fish spawn period.

Since the Fish Commission was drawing a line in the sand about the alternating weekends in May and June (if effect, threatening no plan at all for 2005), DCNR drew a line in the sand for the summer season, insisting that the weekday conservation flow be reduced from 250 cfs to 200 cfs whenever the upcoming weekend release is in jeopardy. This could be a huge benefit for helping assure the July, August and September dates.

I am a little disappointed with these results, but realistically, there is a increased likelihood of the scheduled releases happening, while still having a runnable river on the alternating May/June weekends.

One of the Fish Commissions remaining complaints is that the "boaters have all the holiday weekends" meaning Memorial Weekend, July 4 weekend and Labor Day Weekend. This amy have an effect of releases for next year.

FIRST DAY OF SPRING PADDLE
March 20th

The extended forcast looks good for the first day of spring, partly cloudy, 41*, not really spring like but it will do.

I'm putting together a trip if anyone is interested. I will plan on the upper Swatara, if there's enough water. It is running now and they forcast some showers later in the week. I am running this today to check for ugly strainers. The upper Schuylkill will be the back up trip.

The upper Swatara is a small creek with some twists and turns that requires a fair amount of manuevering, no rapids, just some riffles, very senic (except for the noise from I-81). Length of trip may vary depending on the weather, water levels, # of people and their interest. Either 5.8, 7.8 or 13.6 miles.

If your interested just send me an e-mail at wndwalkr@epix.net and I'll be in touch.

Enjoy the day, Mike

Jay- I do not know of such a trip. However, a Google yields this: http://www.fieldtrip.com/pa/07934433.htm which refers to the now-defunct Brandywine Railway. I do know that the Brandywine is a small, pretty canoeing stream that runs through WEST Chester, Pa. into Delaware. A railway runs along some sections for a short time. You may want to call Northbrook Canoe Co. http://members.aol.com/railsriver/index.html They may be able to provide details.

Re: FIRST DAY OF SPRING PADDLE

Well not really, the weather for Saturady looks better, so I'll move this paddle up one day. Also will be moving it over to the upper Schuylkill, do to lack of water on the Swatara.

If anyone's interested drop me a line for the details at wndwalkr@epix.net

Ron Mizerak forwarded me the message below about a new credit card scams going on. This sounds like something everyone should know about so I'm posting it here.

Subject: Possible credit card fraud

This information is worth reading. By understanding how the VISA
&Mastercard Telephone Credit Card Scam works, you'll
be better prepared to protect yourself. Those con artists get more
creative every day.

My husband was called on Wednesday from "VISA", and I was called on
Thursday from "MasterCard". The scam works like this:

Person calling says, "this is <name>, and I'm calling from the Security
and Fraud Department at VISA. My Badge number is
12460. Your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern, and
I'm calling to verify. This would be on your VISA
card which was issued by <name> bank. Did you purchase an
Anti-Telemarketing Device for $497.99 from a marketing company based in
Arizona?"

When you say "No", the caller continues with, "Then we will be issuing a
credit to your account. This is a company we have
been watching and the charges range from $297 to $497, just under the
$500 purchase pattern that flags most cards. Before
your next statement, the credit will be sent to (gives you your
address), is that correct?"

You say "yes". The caller continues... "I will be starting a fraud
investigation. If you have any questions, you should call the 1-800
number listed on the back of your card (1-800-VISA) and ask for
Security. You will need to refer to this Control #" The caller then
gives you a 6 digit number. "Do you need me to read it again?"

Here's the IMPORTANT part on how the scam works. The caller then says,
"he needs to verify you are in possession of your card".
He'll ask you to "turn your card over and look for some numbers.
There are 7 numbers; the first 4 are your card number, the next 3 are
the 'Security Numbers' that verify you are in possession of the
card. These are the numbers you use to make Internet purchases to prove
you have the card. Read me the 3 numbers". After you
tell the caller the 3 numbers, he'll say ,"That is correct. I just
needed to verify that the card has not been lost or stolen, and that
you still have your card, Do you have any other questions?"
After you say No, the caller then Thanks you and states, "Don't hesitate
to call back if you do", and hangs up.

You actually say very little, and they never ask for or tell you the
card number. But after we were called on Wednesday, we called
back within 20 minutes to ask a question. Are we glad we did! The REAL
VISA Security Department told us it was a scam and in the last 15
minutes a new purchase of $497.99 was charge on on our card.

Long story made short, we made a real fraud report and closed the VISA
card, and they are reissuing us a new number. What the
scammers wants is the 3-digit PIN number on the back of the card.
Don't give it to them. Instead, tell them you'll call VISA or Master
card direct. The real VISA told us that they will never ask for
anything on the card as they already know the information since they
issued the card! If you give the scammers your 3 Digit PIN
Number, you think you're receiving a credit. However, by the time you
get your statement, you'll see charges for purchases you didn't
make, and by then it's almost to late and/or harder to actually file a
fraud report.

What makes this more remarkable is that on Thursday, I got a call from a
"Jason Richardson of MasterCard" with a word-for-word repeat of the VISA
scam. This time I didn't let him finish. I hung up!
We filed a police report, as instructed by VISA. The police said they
are taking several of these reports daily! They also urged us to
tell everybody we know that this scam is happening.

Please pass this on to all your friends. By informing each other, we
protect each other.

For the record concerning the credit card scam . . . this is not a story of someone who knows someone, etc. This happened to my wifes co-worker at the Reading Public Museum. This is a very real scam being practiced right here in our community. Be aware. Knowledge is the best defense.

Just wanted to say thank you for making me and my wife Shannon feel so welcome at tonight's Keystone Canoe Club meeting. It was an honor to share some of what I know about river safety with those at the meeting. People shared it with me when I started and throughout my career, and I hope you share information that was new to you. This stuff needs to be passed on. Remember, luck is what happens when practice meets opportunity.

Keep your paddle wet! Thanks again... you're a great bunch of people.

I am interested in participating in the 2005 Schuylkill River Sojourn as a full tripper. The KCC looks like it is the closest club where I can learn how, and prepare for this trip. I do not currently have either a canoe or kayak, just the interest and time to dedicate to preparing for the Sojourn. If someone from the club could point me in a direction, I will start paddling..

There will be a pool session at the Body Zone this Sunday night, 5/15/05, from 7:00 to 9:00pm. This might be a good time to practice getting back into your touring or sea kayak. Some activities to practice are wet exits, bracing, re-entry using a paddle float, re-entry using a safety strap, rolling, and turning your boat by leaning it up on its edge. Cost of the session is $10.00. The large whirl pool will also be available. Informal instruction will be provided. White water kayaks and canoes are also welcome. For additional information call Larry March at 610-777-1930.

Hi, I have a question about whether or not canoes and kayaks require a permit in Pennsylvania. Some people have told me they launch their canoes in PA streams and have never had their boats register. They say you only need to register if you launch in a State or County Park. Can anyone tell me what I need to paddle down the rivers in PA?
John TraversPerson was signed in when posted  105
05-19-2005 10:09 PM ET (US)
Mike,
Here is the paragraph from the PA boating regulations on the www.fish.state.pa.us website (go to boat tab on site, the regulations in left menu as I recall):

"Owners of unpowered boats (canoes, kayaks, rowboats, etc.) can launch their boats at Commission lakes and access areas or Pennsylvania state parks if their boats display a Commission launch permit, boat registration, or PA State Parks launch permit or mooring permit. Pennsylvania State Parks recognizes Commission boat registrations and launch permits. The Commission does NOT recognize launch permits from other states."

Note that this only applies to Fish and Boat Commission access areas and state parks. For example you do not need one for Blue Marsh Lake except for the F&BC access area off of Rt 183. Registrations, which require a title I think, or Launch Permits, which do not, are each good for 2 years for $18. More info about these is also at the website. I typically get the launch permit and this is the first year that the are good for 2 years at the same price as a registration

Let me know if you need more info. jtravers@pol.net

You do not need apermit to paddle Pa. rivers unlesss you use Fish Comission Acccess or property, state lakes such as French Creek St. Park or Nokamixon require permits.

Calling all paddlers:

The Schuylkill River Sojourn will reach the Tulpehocken Confluence and RiverPlace at about 2pm on Monday, June 6.

The RiverPlace Board would like to join the Sojourn as it passes Confluence Point, (a 100 yard carry from the corner of Blair Avenue and Montgomery Street, just downstream from Stonecliffe Park) and paddle along a short distance to Kerper's Landing at Riverfront Park, where there will be an official welcome event.

If there are any paddlers with extra seats and life jackets to offer our Board members, please let us know. We anticipate about 10 to 15 participants.

Thanks for your consideration.

I would like you all to know that I took first place at the Philadelphia Canoe Clubs spring reghatta in the mens masters sea kayak devision, and have made our club proud. I would also like all of you to disregard the fact that I was the only one in my category. I am especially happy that Larry March did not show up to ruin my day (beat me). Thanks to everyone for staying home, I looked great. Cliff

Kelly' is a nice easy surf wave (actually 4 or more possible waves depending on levels). To get there take the River road exit off the bypass (near Cartech) go about 3 miles or so and you'll see a parking area on the left. you can see the wave from the parking area on river right. To get in the river go down the bank just on the upstream edge of the parking lot. I'll be there around 6pm tuesday. you can call my cell at 6107803195 if you need better directions

Hi all,
I along with Bert E, and Andrew Miller have been asked by Bob Behling of the Riverplace revitalization effort to present him with options for whitewater park options, location etc.

I have no experience in any of this, but did e-mail it to him as a possiblity, hence, my situation.

He mentioned the race at the mouth of the Tully as a possible site, and it appears to have potential

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

The comfort of “Mother Ship” kayak touring has finally arrived on the east coast!

If you would love to discover unspoiled natural coastline with the intimacy only a kayak can approach, via a homeport that travels with you along the shore, then these “mother ship” supported tours will interest you.

Recent articles in prominent kayak magazines, expounded the benefits of “Mother Ship” kayaking adventure tours, until now, only available in Alaska and British Columbia.

Kayak Touring Magazine said: “After a Mother Ship-supported kayak trip, don’t be surprised if camping loses some of its luster”!

Mother-Ship” Kayaking aboard Grand Coastal Tours new and private, seventy foot motor yacht is equipped for your sport touring vacations and designed for onboard comfort! Each destination has been chosen for its naturalistic form, eco-touring advantage, and scenic beauty. Kayaks, bicycles, snorkeling & light fishing gear are all on board for your convenience and pleasure. Add sunny days and warm temps, fabulous food, unbelievable four and eight day tariffs and a crew dedicated to guest service and you’ve just reserved the best multi-sport vacation ever!

You can choose Fall or Spring along the scenic Intra-Coastal Waterway amidst the beautiful Sea Islands of the Low Country from Charleston, South Carolina to Amelia Island, Florida. Perhaps pick a Winter date in “Paddlers Paradise”. . . .either in the Florida Keys or by the Calusa Blueway off Sanibel/Captiva Islands. Or, book a summer sojourn on Lake Champlain (2006) tucked between the borders of Vermont and New York.

If you want to learn more, I can email brochures in PDF format. I believe any of our tours would be an unforgettable adventure for you and interested friends.

Please don’t hesitate to phone me or send an email if you have any questions.

For those frustrated by the lack of water, the Tully should be up this weekend. Dam release of 250cfs is planned. This typically gives about 3ft near the dam gage and 1.7ft near the Red Bridge gage which is just enough to get down. I may take the kids on Saturday

Hi Bill,

Kelly's is a whitewater play spot on the left side of River Rd. one mile east of Rt 12 (in Reading). Its a Class II+ surfing wave. You should have a reliable roll before you get on it.

If you would like instruction, check-out NE PA Kayak School in Lehighton - they're running classes now. Also Lehigh Valley Canoe Club will be starting a 3-month class in January. And finally the Keystone club will be having pool sessions in January as well.

 — FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE —

Francis E. Walter Dam White Water Release scheduled for October 15 and 16

PHILADELPHIA (Oct. 12, 2005) --- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and its partners Delaware River Basin Commission, Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, and Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources have scheduled a water release of 750 to 1,000 cfs from the Francis E. Walter Dam for the weekend of October 15 and 16.

During the recent rain event, the F.E. Walter Dam was able to prevent potential flooding and the water held by the dam increased the pool elevation from its normal elevation of 1300 ft. to 1341 ft. Currently, the Corps of Engineers is releasing water from the F.E. Walter Dam at a rate of 750 to 1,000 cfs to return the pool to its normal elevation at which the dam provides the maximum amount of flood protection.

In the very near future, the Corps along with its partners will begin developing the 2006 F.E. Walter Flow Management Plan and we are asking for public comments and other information to start the planning process. All of the comments currently on the web, as well as any provided in the future, will be considered throughout the planning development process and can be found at this site: http://www.nap.usace.army.mil/Projects/FEWalter/comments.htm.

Hey Bill, what kind of boat do you have? I have a friend who is also getting started in a whitewater kayak, and I'm trying to talk him into practicing on some easy stuff (e.g., Little Lehigh) next weekend. He's complaining its too cold, so I'm not sure if he'll go, but anyway send me your email address and I'll let you know when we do go. We'll be doing the pool sessions as well.

Attention skiiers!
If anyone is interested in purchasing a season's pass at Bear Creek, (formerly Doe Mt.), now is the time to buy. I usually go with the off-peak pass which entitles you to anytime weekdays, and evenings on weekends, (holiday evenings only). At $195.00 it is a great bargan, but if I can locate others to join me at time of purchase, (good until 10/30) we all can get one for $165.00! I'm hoping to gather other interested folks by 10/22. Shoot me an e-mail if you're interested and we'll rendezvous and do the deal together and get the best discount. ball@dejazzd.com

Bill, my friend is still avoiding the cold water. My guess is that he's probably going to hold-out for the pool sessions. NRS (on the web) has good selection of cold-weather gear. Hydroskin G2 and a paddle jacket will hold you for a couple weeks. Then it'll be drysuit ($$$$) time.

need opinions---
since i'm a rookie kayaker;
the pros & cons of dry suit separates (socks, drytop/pants)vs a 1 pc. drysuit...which is easier to get on/off, comfort, mobility, wear/tear etc;
or, is it all a matter of taste/preference
(both are similar in material, cost is less)

thx

I don't know the Tohickon yet to know where this is but thought it worthwhile to pass along from the LVWW board

"Just wanted to remind everyone that as of last Wednesday, the strainer was still there 35 ft behind corner hole on river left. You can easily avoid it on river right. Be Careful if you must play in Corner Hole. Can also be snuck around way river left along the shore."

Bill, In my not so humble opinion separates are more versatile as it is possible to wear just the drytop alone when needed. Greg Wojcik

Hello,
My name is John Lavelle, I'm messaging your club to ask for volunteers for a triathlon I'm organizing. The tri will be at Tuscarora State Park and the tentative date is June 18th. I need kayakers or conoes for the swim portion of the race and was wondering if anyone in your group would be interested in helping out. All you have to do is make sure people stay on course and keep an eye out for dangerious situations that may arise, and you'll recieve a free t-shirt. Your club could also advertise at the race or supply me a flier for the race packet every competitor recieves. If anyone is interested you could e-mail me at tusc_tri@yahoo.com we will also have a site up and running by January which is http://geocities.com/tusc_tri

Also for anyone interested in competing in the event the disances are 1.5K swim, 45K bike, and a 10K run

Thank you

In case some of you are not aware, Ralph Kofroth passed away on November 23rd. Known as the Rainbow Rocker, Ralph often stood out wearing bright colored clothing. He was an active member of the Keystone Canoe Club and the Schuylkill River Greenway. He also volunteered at Blue Marsh Lake. Ralph was also an avid hiker and treked the complete Appalachian trail. Known for his kind words and deeds, he left a positive impression on all who met him. Ralph will be greatly missed. Contributions in memory of Ralph may be made to the Schuylkill River Greenway, 140 college Drive, Pottstown, Penna. 19464.

(Subject to correction by more informed members)

Pool sessions are the paddlers cure to the winter doldrums.
They are unstructured 2 hour time periods to paddle your boat around the pool. Several more experienced or instructor experienced members are available to assist with informal instruction. Many of us have learned to roll during these seesions.

As I recall from last year, the sessions are $10 each for members of the club. If not a member you can join there ( can't remember membership fees). Boats must be clean to enter the pool. All boats should be out of the pool by 8:45. PFD's should be worn. (No extra charge to warm up in the hot tub after the pool)

If you have a boat, paddle, PFD, skirt etc. bring them along. Swimwear or wetsuits are typically worn. If you need something post here. If you just want to see what goes on first, just come by to check one of the sessions to check it out (no charge unless you get in the pool and paddle I believe)

I haven't been to Body Zone. How big is the pool? Is it only for small white water boats? I paddle a touring kayak thats 16 ft. I really just want to get a roll down. Been working on it for awhile now. Will the pool handle a 16 ft?

I have updated the website calendar of events.

There are several events listed on the calendar that you MUST be a member of the canoe club to go on...make sure you check! Dues to become a member are $15.00.

If you are not a member but want to come to roll sessions you can sign up to be a member on the night that you come.

More details for most events can be found in the sweep. The January Sweep will be sent out in the next week. I will be updating the rest of the website soon as well. If you still don't find your answer...e-mail one of the officers or post a message and someone will answer your question.

For those interested in Lehigh release planning:

Corps to hold Francis E. Walter Dam Flow Management Information Workshop and announce the 2006 plan

PHILADELPHIA (Jan. 23, 2006) --- The Corps of Engineers and its partners the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and Delaware River Basin Commission, in their ongoing efforts to enhance recreation along the Lehigh River, will conduct a public information workshop to announce the 2006 Francis E. Walter Dam Flow Management Plan and discuss its implementation.

The public is invited to the workshop that will take place on Feb. 16, in the Galleria, at the Split Rock Lodge, One Lake Drive, Lake Harmony, Pa. from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm and will be facilitated by the Wildlands Conservancy.

        Workshop Schedule

6:30 Networking session for the public and agency personnel

7:00 Presentation by the Corps and its partners addressing the execution of the 2005 Flow Management Plan and providing details of the 2006 plan

8:00 The Corps and its partners will form small breakout groups to discuss the new plan and address other recreational concerns individually.

        9:00 Workshop ends

At the heart of the current and future flow management plans is the public and how its needs will influence future decisions. As of today, the Corps has received about 375 comments that were considered in developing this year’s flow management plan.

The Corps and its partners encourage the public to continue their participation in the process and provide us written comments throughout the year by mail or email.

Pool session feedback FYI:

My son and I attended the pool session at Cedar Crest H.S. just south of Lebanon(30min from Wernersville) on Saturday 1/21 from 5:30-7:30pm

There were 4 paddlers in addition to 2 instructors(Marci and Eric) in a pool the size of Body Zone's. There was no ramp like BZ but we were allowed to seal launch into the pool.

The instructor ratio allowed for significant one on one instruction time. Marci and Eric were both patient and qualified.

If you want more instruction than our pool sessions at Body Zone then I highly recommend these sessions. Plus, we got to paddle sooner than 2/12

Sessions are alternate Saturdays, $20 each, with discounts for prepayment of multiple sessions. Payment and registration must be done in advance through The Crank bike and kayak shop in Wernersville

Hi everybody,

Thanks for welcoming my son Simon and I at the club meeting! The whole family is happy to be part of the Keystone Canoe Club. I just wanted to post the information about the Thun Trail workday that I mentioned at the meeting. We will be meeting at 9:00am, Saturday Feb. 4th at Morlatton Village to clear more trail in Douglas Twp.

To get to Morlatton Village: Rte 724 to River Bridge Road (near Covatta's Brinton Lodge) over the Schuylkill. Take a left onto Old Philadelphia Pike and pass the sewage treatment plant. You can park on the street and access the trail behind the last house on the right (the road dead ends). We will be continuing clearing towards Pottstown. We will be out there from 9-3 so if you don't have anything better to do come on out for as little or as long as you like! We made a lot of progress last time and we want to keep on pushing to the county line.

Thanks

Bike trip on the Youghiogheny River Trail / Allegheny Highlands Trail.

Dates: Memorial Day Weekend. Leaving Reading either Thursday May 25th (around 6:00 PM) or early Friday May 26th morning. Returning to Reading on Tuesday May 30th.

This trip is about 135 miles from McKeesport, PA to Cumberland, MD. Will be biking between 25-40 miles a day -depending on stop off points. (this is just a rough estimate of milage per day) This is still in the planning stage - but wanted to put it out there for scheduling purposes.

Will be camping most nights and hopefully staying in a lodge one night. Will be spending a day in Ohiopyle and rafting and/or kayaking) the Yough (optional).

You will need to take your own bike, camping gear, and food.
Looking into a shuttle to take us back to McKeesport.

If interested - please call Jacque Brown at 610-451-2469 with questions, comments, etc. Again - this is in the "planning stage" - not all info. is gathered yet! Did the C&O Last Memorial Day Weekend and it was great!

Greg Wojcik, I am curious as to what the OC-1 looks like. I will be at the roll session this Sunday.(2/26) Are you going into business? I was also wondering if you still had the K-1 kevlar race boat.
I am looking for something different to add to the creek/playboats. I was up in the hills of Tioga County last weekend. North of Galeton, PA. It was a -10 degree camp/hill climb trip. Was fun though. Refreshing. Ha! See you, Sunday.

Hi Everyone,

I am writing you about a proposed modification to the Holtwood Dam on the Susquehanna River. If you are not familiar with the river reach, check out: http://www.chasingrain.com/surfguide/Holtwoodguide.pdf. The proposal will eliminate about 55 of the 95 annual days of boatable flows (on average) out at holtwood, build another small dam that could mess things up, and excavate additional bedrock in the channel. They are doing this on the fast track a few years prior to relicensing in order to take advantage of some major tax benefits in the new Energy Policy Act. They want to amend the license and get a long extention on the current license.

This project could significantly improve the passage of shad at the dam, which last year passed only 3% of the shad that passed Conowingo Dam downstream. This would be a very good thing. The project would also add 132 megawatts of power to the dam, which is ALOT of power for a hydro dam. This is actually a pretty smart thing environmentally (more power for similar impacts) - except for the impacts on whitewater recreation. My take is that this is going to happen, and that we need to make sure our interests are met. There will be losses, it will be hard for those that love this resource, but there are at least opportunities to soften the blow. There is a serious potential for a whitewater park with flows every day, flows everyday in a couple natural features, scheduled releases, improved access, etc - but we have to make it happen. The dam owner has thusfar ignored whitewater boating almost entirely. For more info: http://www.pplweb.com/holtwood2010.

There will be public meetings, there will be negotiations, there will be filings with the FERC. We need the paddling community to play a strong roll, since we are the biggest losers in this deal. We need to represent shared interests and act as united as possible. We need to empower the local boaters that know and love Holtwood. I am happy to help, and have drafted up an initial letter to PPL, the dam owner, which is attached. I would like to send this letter within the next few days, and call the project manager to chat. I would like to help a local group get started, help them get the resources they need, and I can help file FERC comments when that day comes.

SO - if you would like to sign on to this initial letter - or have comments on it - please send me your full contact information and a paragraph about your organization/business. We can have a conference call soon to discuss this too. So far I have:

Conewago Canoe Club

Lehigh Valley Canoe Club

Kayak and Canoe Club of New York

Stark Moon Outfitters

Monocacy Canoe Club

Greater Baltimore Canoe Club

Blue Mountain Outfitters

Springriver Corp

Canoe Cruisers

Who am I missing? Thanks for your interest.

In an attempt to catch up with the times and ensure that the club is taking advantage of every layer of protection from lawsuits as possible, I have been instructed by the club officers to create an official club disclaimer for this messageboard.

Unfortunately, putting a disclaimer directly within this messageboard is a difficult task considering that within days the posting will get bumped off the first page and likely never read again.

To solve this problem I have set up a new messageboard that I should be able to keep a disclaimer posted on indefinitely without too much hassle. You can check out this new messageboard and post your opinions about it through the club website messageboard link. I will leave this messageboard functioning for now as well until I see how the switch goes. If all goes well this Quicktopic board will eventually be shut down.

Hi Jerry,
Typically the regatta is the first Saturday in May, which is May 5th this year but I do not have confirmation on that. Becky Hughes is the organizer, you can reach her at rainingturtle(at)hotmail(dot)com.

PS-This board is kinda dead. The new one can be accessed through the club website www.keystonecanoeclub.org

Hi Susan,
The Website for the club: www.keystonecanoeclub.org is the only one I know.
(I was not as involved in the club 2003 and earlier)

Currently the first menu selection is Regatta results, but last year, and I presume again this year, more current info will be available.

Again, as in the post below you can e-mail Becky
