Bruce, did you resize your jpg on the Dreamweaver page? If you did, take them back to Fireworks or Photoshop and adjust the Image Size to exactly the size you want them on the webpage. Then Export (Fireworks) or Save for Web (Photoshop) again.

Erin, adjusting the size should not matter. Putting them on separate pages will help. Out of Flash, Export-Export Movie right to your site folder. Then in Dreamweaver Insert-Media-Flash should do it without any problems.

Database questions: address to Dr. S!

Hi! I am having trouble with the flash aspect of my site. I imported my flash creations to a page, but it takes forever to download- I am not sure if they even will finish at all. Rachel is having a similar problem...I tried putting them on separate pages but am not sure if that is even the problem. FYI- I adjusted the size after exporting them b/c I did not know how to do it prior to- Could that be a problem? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Lauren- My notion is that you/ we find refs. that interest us and/or reflect our site. First goal is simply to gain experience using the data base, and as it was in my case, I unexpectedly found interest in articles that I at first discovered to merely fulfill my obligation.

Although this plas in comparision with some technical acidents that are possible ...somehow I altered ALL of myu Jpegs. The Icon if viewed in FILES is a series of thin pale lines. What happens when I open it? you might ask. Fireworks??????? help.

when I launch some pages, in Dreamweaver, some pages are opening with a warning " (found 10 browser errors check) how and what should I do since things are not working as they should be.

I'm still kind of confused about these reference materials found on the data bace. What is there purpose? What are they soposed to relate to? I think people will be a little confused looking at a site with a few randome references in the middle of a webpage.

Regarding our EEV Questionnaire- Anyone know what “ activities” are being referred to in some of the questions.• "The impact of activities on others..." do they refer to activities inside our collaborations or class tech activities such as flash...?

I am working on the Beginning Flash Movie handout that Kathy showed me. I am stuck because when I created the buttons and duplicated them, the last step says that the button layer should go to frame 60 but mine doesn't. My buttons only appear in frame 1. Did I miss a big step? Can I fix this easily or have I really messed up my flash document. I am planning on coming early tomorrow night but I was wondering if you knew what was going on. Faye Do you know the best way to save the virtual tour I made for Pollock's property from the VR Worx program Dr. Byrne has, so I can then use it on my computer. I am going to make it again because it didn't save on his computer that has VR Worx. I don't remember exactly how I saved it and it didn't work exactly how we need it too, when we tried in class. How about saving out of FrontPage to Word and then Save as Web from Word? After you do that, just open the page in Dreamweaver. You may want to explore under Commands menu > Clean up Word HTML.

How come Dreamweaver doesn't like my pasted in table that I made with FrontPage? It keeps having a critical error and shutting down. I would rather not have to recreate this whole table of websites and stuff. I will never make anything in FrontPage again.

i have been trying to get on and do my logs today but something comes up that says, SQL server does not exist or is not granted access.....anyone else having difficulty?

I notice on the server that the power point link does not come up. I know that some other people were having trouble with power point on the web. At this point, what would you do?

my daughter was on instant messenger last night. when ever she goes on, weather bug and other programs attach to my desktop and create pop up windows all over the place. i have just spent the better part of two hours trying to figure out how to get my home page back to msn and trying to delete all signs of aim and aol from my home computer. i still can't get into my logs and my laptop reads "page not found" when i try to log on to my email and team. i hope you get this! i don't know what to do, i've tried everything i can think of. i think i can email from my home computer. i can't access the tech, eev, or pgs logs.

Lots of questions...
First: the file address is on your computer!!!
Second: Any web album can be edited in Dreamweaver. More tomorrow on that.
Third: It is easier to redo the batch processing if you want the linked photos larger than it is to do each photo.
Fourth: I get there on or before 4 if you want help.

In dreamweave I can find a different page,a dreamweaver batched file, but how can I change the size of the Linked image quickly and as a group. Do I go to the file and change each image?

I am trying a few things out...Batch processing . I used fireworks and now Photoshop. The web album I gcreatred is above. It is just an experiment but can it be incorporated? Can it be edited in Dreamweaver or should I stay clear of it?

Once again...WRITE IN WORD! Also, that is the only advice I can say other than what I have stated several times here - If you have other problems with the logs, please email Dr. B! Logs "time out" which means you can write for a long time and it will not be saved.

so frustrated...every time I think I can just enter a log without writing it in word first, the system does not save it. Just wrote and clicked save and went back to view it and it wasn't there. Why does that happen?

In the movie clip on the last frame should be the stop. Make sure that your last frame has TEAM in it. You may have an empty keyframe there so everything disappears.

I've been working on the handout for Flash (Shape and Motion weens). I just finished Second movie clip but I didn't get the end result I wanted. The circles start to tween to TEAM but just before it is complete everything disappears. I checked over what I did and seemed to follow the directions correctly. Is it something about where I placed the stop? If so how can I take it out and stop it later

Fireworks images will only be transparent when you click "alpha transparency" in either the Optimize panel or in Export Preview.

Look at the answer for Bruce about using tables to line things up. I'm going through the same thing with a page I'm working on. Looks fine in Dreamweaver, looks horrible in all the browsers!

OK Faye, I clicked on the button, clicked edit, and in that window I put mailto:lwong@southamptonschools.org I uploaded the page, then tried the link in explorer, and it said page cannot be found??! What did I do wrong. Also, I looked again and all my images have a grey backgrond and that is part of what is covering up my text. I thought if you exported the image it would come with the transparent background. But besides that, it's just not lining up in the browser like it is in dreamweaver? Thanks. Lisa

Faye, thanks. I am also having a problem with layers. I a putting together a page where their are many of them, and they are on top of one anothe in some cases. It looks fine in dreamweaver, but when I put it up some of the layers overlaps the text and is not in the same place it is in dreamweaver. I changed it to put a table in a layer, and then the image in the table, but it still overlaps. Thanks.

I'm having trouble putting an e-mail link to a flash button. How do I do it?? It asks for a link, but there is not place in the edit window that I can put in an e-mail link. I tried importing the image into fireworks, putting the image in the page and then just adding an e-mail link to the image, but that didn't work either. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Tables in Dreamweaver to make sure the appear the same in everyone's browser: Set the width and height of the columns and rows to pixels and not percentages. Just remember that each cell cannot be set, it has to be columns and rows. You can add tables within tables for more alignment of text and images. Go read the help column in Dreamweaver on Tables.

You don't edit html in Firework. You can edit PNG's in Fireworks. If it is a GIF or JPG you will have to edit using the bitmap tools in Fireworks.

How do you edit my html dreamweaver page ,in fireworks? I recall a synbol down in my properties but she gone now.....

In laying out a table with multiple rows or coluoms I am finding what I see in Dreamweaver doesn't match what shows up on the web. The placement of one segment of text to another. Should I arrange in Fireworks? Or use some sort of grid?

If you look at the three choices in synchronizing, one choice is what you have mentioned, Meg. I love the fact that it "Preview"s before so you can make a choice of what to PUT or GET.

HUH? Do you get an error message that it doesn't put? If you don't, clear your cache or use someone else's computer to see if it is there.

Mike: Open the file in Fireworks and change the image size. You can also check out under the File Menu > Batch Processing. One of the handouts at the http://eev.liu.edu/ee2006/links.htm is for Batch Processing in Fireworks.

Meg: The answer is YES. Real Player does that.

I was going to download Real Player to listen to the sound version of something on a website we were suppost to visit. When I tried to open the downloaded file (real player) I was told that it is an executable file, which may contain a virus. Is this just a general message or should I not download?

This is not site specific...yet, but I am having trouble. I have pictures that are saved to a cd that are huge (sonagram of my little girl) and I want to convert them to a smaller file...ie png or jpeg. Can this be done and if so how can it be done? Thanks

I am having difficulty with converting a PP animation to Flash. I tried following the directions on the tutorial link provided by Faye but I was not successful. Has anyone tried the free conversion software that was referenced by Faye?

Faye, I'm having trouble with my logs. When I go to submit, a screen pops up which says: "Server Error in '/' Application" and then it says something about a request validation "detected a potentially dangerous client input value" and that my request has been aborted. Any suggestions?

Meg, save the file. Then go to Firework's File-Open. See if that works.

Sarah: really easy - make sure you have the extension .doc on the document and send as an attachment. No need for a PDF. Windows people will be able to open it. I do it all the time.

I have a Mac and I want to send an email with an attachment to send to a PC. Do I save my word file as a PDF? If so, how do I do this?

Faye- Thanks for your reply. I am still having trouble getting the pictures. Don't I need to download them from my email first so that I can see them when I open Fireworks? My email just asks if I want to open the pictures in Paint (default) or save to a disk. Should I try to open the page (using the pull down menu) using Fireworks? Bruce: those are PC compressed files. Now the purchased verson of StuffIt will unstuff the zip on the Mac; don't remember if the tar does. ZipIt will unstuff the zip on the PC. I know I have dealt with tar before, but can not remember the solution.

Faye, I just figured out the question I asked you in the e-mail I sent you about redefining my site. So I did a "Get" before I did anything like I was supposed to and when I am looking at files in "Remote View" I have a list of everybody's sites. Everybody's individual sites, yours, Donna's and each groups sites. I have the entire ee0406/ folder. I don't want to overwrite anybody's things. I clocked all of those folders in my remote view, but how do I get rid of them and only view my "Wellness" folder and my "LW" folder?? Thanks. Lisa W.

Stop a Flash movie: Create a new layer. Insert a keyframe on the last frame of the movie in that layer. In the Actions palette, double-click stop.

Formats: Almost everyone has a browser so Publish an HTML and a SWF which is the default File > Publish setting.

How do I add a stop to the end of a flash document so that it doesn't continue playing. How do I save it with multiple formats? What is the best/most efficient format to save it in. What is the best way to display the clip after the document is compiled, since not all computers have flash. Should I import it into another program that can be run from any computer and which one.

Meg, I forgot one. Yes, change to 94. 72 is for the Mac user.

Try to address each question:

Meg, Under Window is Optimize. That palette has the choices the image should be. JPG will not be transparent and will have a while background. If you create a graphic that has gradient or drop shadow, the jpg will appear better than gif.

Meg and Jeannine: Open Firework and then File-Open the pictures you download rather than double clicking them to open. Then you will be able to save them.

Bruce and other Mac users: you need to set under System Preferences > Keyboard so that the F keys will work. What a great tech log entry if you figure that out.

In addition, Jeannine and I have been working at our house together and she just scanned and emailed me 4 coloring book pages. We are trying to save the downloaded pictures from my email but it is opening in Windows Picture and Fax viewer and there is no option to save from there. How can we save the picture and eventually attach it to a webpage? Thanks for your help again.

The picture is a link but the boarder was set to zero. I deleted the image and inserted the same image again and the blue boarder disappeared. Very strange... but oh well the blue boarder is gone which is most important.

I checked the resolution of my Fireworks document and it was set at 72 Pixels/Inch. Should I change that to 94 and then export it to Dreamweaver to see if that helps? I didn't enlarge the button in Dreamweaver. Also, I didn't understand the third suggestion you made about Fireworks. I am not sure what you meant. Thanks for your help again.

Flash knowledge: Go to google.com. Do an ADVANCED search for Flash tutorials at edu units. You would not believe what you will find. This one is one of my favorites: http://www.utexas.edu/learn/flash/

I tried after last class to continue what we did but I lost the sequence and it just would not work like it did in class.( I'll get a book) but until then I'll rely on the eev support site? Any other pointers that will help?

Have you create a hyperlink so when one clicks the photo it takes you somewhere? Sometimes that is the answer. Click on the photo in Dreamweaver; look at Properties and make sure there is a 0 for border.

Fireworks buttons to check: First, make sure the resolution is 94 in the Fireworks document (Under Modify > Image Size). Second, make sure you don't enlarge them in Dreamweaver. Third, if you have used any Fireworks effects, optimize (Optimize palette) to a jpg not a gif.

Hi there. I have been working with Dreamweaver on my webpage for our EEV project. When I tried to insert some pictures of paintings into a table a blue boarder sometimes appeared around the painting. It doesn't happen everytime I insert a picture so that makes it even more strange. Any idea what is going on?

Also, when I exported a button I made with Fireworks I noticed the quality was pretty fuzzy. Do you have any suggestions on a tutorial I could work with that focuses specifically on buttons? I will look through the webiste tutorials (course artifacts) but I thought I would ask you as well. Thanks for your help.

Rachel has it right. Doing all of those helps, especially Google Toolbar and using Firefox. [Or one could use a Macintosh, just a little joke because Macs are somewhat immune to attack.]

As far as VR, I am not even sure since I haven't worked in that area for years. Let's ask Donna on Wednesday.

Hi Nancy - I remember Faye & Donna recommending:
1)dowload and install the google toolbar
2)download and install adaware & spybot - update them and run scans regularly
4)antivirus software - update & run scans regularly (not sure which one the recommend but Norton & McAfee are the big ones) I think they also mentioned grisoft.
3)use Mozilla's Firefox rather than Internet Explorer as your browser whenever you can

Does anyone know how to flip the contents of a table? I have a long table and I would like the stuff at the bottom to now be at the top and vice versa - kind of like a reverse sort in excel, but this is just an ordinary table on a page in frontpage.

Ellen, I have done the Export-Windows Metafile and put it into Flash. That can be done without any other software. Has anyone else tried them?

Faye, did you try any of the programs designed to help put power point on the web?

Make sure you have PUT the page to your folder. It is probably link to your "C" drive.

Any reason that links to two parts of my Pollock page are coming up "Page Not Found" ? I'm not sure if I need to relink them.

Usually the code only pages means you have either not put the .htm on the end of the file or you are "view"ing it in code only. First check the View menu.

You need to use "StuffIt" on the Mac side and "ZipIt" on the PC side. There are free versions and there are paid versions. I own on my Mac StuffIt because I can also make Zip files. With the free version one can't. You probably have the free version on your computer. It will have DropStuff which means you drop a folder on that icon and it will stuff.

email questions- I have gotten zip or folder via email. How do I do that? How can I send 10 or more images at 72 dpi via email?

Something I did made the Dreamweaver page come up in coode only. Nothing exists now in display mode. Coulod it have been foolish or careless sorting of files into folders?

Good, Bruce. Another way, put your cursor where you want the image and select Insert > Image.

Re power point to web:
I downloaded a sample of PPT2HTML program that is supposed to allow conversion of powerpoint to web complete with templates. Some of the instructions I am not sure about but maybe we can look at them at the next class. According to my brother, once you have installed a program that allows power point to be converted to PDF files, it is a very simple process.

Faye, I want to add images to a page I have for Jackson Pollock. I want the new images to go before/above the ones that are already there. Is there a way to do that?

  For your screen: buy ikleen or....

    * If you don't want to purchase anything, you can try using a facial tissue with a small amount of water on it (just try to get it damp - not soaked). Or, you can get a cloth like the ones mentioned above and dampen it a little. But DO NOT use any window-cleaners on an LCD - this will damage the screen over time.

Bruce, do a search in google. I did and found that a weak solution of white vinegar and water when the computer is off works for regular monitors, but not laptops. Answer back your solution.

Okay, here's some repeating:

Logs: Contact Dr. B!!!! The tech QT doesn't deal with that since I have no control.

Linking in a JPG: In Dreamweaver this is a Hot Spots to create just that. Look that up in your help file or book if tech time is short this evening.

Table size: 800 pixels wide.

Buttons: I would have to see what you are calling "pre created buttons." If you created the buttons from Fireworks, you should have saved the native file. Fireworks will be covered over the next couple of weeks in the tech sessions.

Never mind. I figured it out. I guess thinking out loud helped.

I made changes to my pages and when I preview, everything works fine. After I "put" it doesn't work on the website. I even previewed the pages saved in the remote folder and it works fine. What am I doing wrong that won't let it work on the site?

Are there corresponding Frontpage commands or functions to Dreamweaver's put/get? I really like security of the local and remote set up. I just don't know how to do that cool split screen in Frontpage without just having a bunch of windows to folders open.

Kathy (and others): Plans have been made to get your group to the group folder. It is much easier to do it in person than via email/Tech QT.

Logs work. I don't know why mine didn't go through? Oh well. And for those of you that have just the line you are fine. It cuts off mid sentence and if you go to edit the log, you'll see the entire thing. So it's in there.

I had a little trouble posting my log at first. I emailed Dr. Byrne about it (I think he developed the new site) and he got back to me right away.
Also, I think there is a point when you "view all log entries" and it just shows you a table with the basic info for each log . . . if you click on each one it takes you to a more full record.

Glad to see I'm not the only one w/Log troubles. It's just not transfering to me. It says "input string in not in a correct form". I have it saved in a word file and I'll email it Faye and Bette. Let us know if it's fixed later. Thanks.

I am having the same problem Linda did with seeing my logs. I wrote a lot but only one sentence appears when I look at the log. I do not see any numbers in the right hand column (like Linda did) that I could click on to make the log appear. Did my complete log get entered? Please let me know. Thanks

I am doing tables in Microsoft word and I want to insert another row in my table. I know I can go to "insert row", but someone taught me the hot key for it but I forgot. Do you know what it is? Let me know if you can.

duh....I clicked on the number in the right hand column and they reappeared. What does that number signify?

I hope something isn't wrong. I typed many log entries today and they were all posted and fine as of late this afternoon. When I just went back to reread them only the first line of each log is there. What is going on? I know they were there before.Help! I hope they are not lost I spent hours on them and no I did not save them in word. Can you see them on your end? Thank you.

just wanted to post a note saying that i was able to locate the new quicktopic site. i wasn't able to get to it before. it kept coming up as page not found. but now it seems to be up. my internet at school and my printer have been on the blink the last week. the techies came in and fixed them and they worked for a day and then went out again. they say it's not something that is happening in my room but in the control panel in the lab. any way i hope it stays fixed so i can do some of the work on my lunch break at school.

I think we are going to do all that in class on Wednesday. However, there should be folder, I think we decided to call it STT or schoolsthattravel, that we should "put" our individual pages to. For example, you would put yours up in that folder as index because it is the home page of the site. To give it a try, use the same beginning address, but instead of KP (your initials - to go to your folder) try STT. Dr. Byrne created the folder for us at the end of last semester - so he probably knows what it is actually called. If you are really anxious to do this, but need the correct folder name, you may want to email him. I'm not sure if I'm correct on this, but maybe someone else can clarify for us here on this quicktopic. Anyone?

I need help to figure out how to get into our collaboration and edit it on the remote site and not just locally. Do we need to place all our files in one folder so that any one from the group can edit it. I know we touched on it in class be I am still a little confused. I know last semester I could edit the pages I created but not anyone elses. Has that changed? What does our group need to do so that we can all work and edit the site at any time. I know we talked about signing out a page and signing it back in and also getting the site files any time we looked at the site so we know what had been updated but I don't think all our files are in one place yet. Help!!
