Dear Faculty Council on Education delegates and alternates:
Our last meeting of the semester will take place on Thursday, April 28, at 3:30 in C-2-5, in the Center for Business and Industry building.
On the agenda will be some of the key elements of our recommendations on General Education. They are the result of our year-long discussion about the competencies and educational experiences that are important for all graduates of the college.
These discussions have been a stimultating part of the college-wide discussion about General Education that is taking place. Regular participants in our decision-making have included representatives from Physics, Math, Behavioral Health Human Services, English, History, Biology, Auto Tech, the Library, Counseling, and others. It's a combination of disciplines that is hard to find in our recent history.
If you have not attended meetings during our 'building year' I hope you will make a special effort to find time to attend next week. I will circulate via email very soon the recommendations that have been approved so far, which include a re-worked set of proposed course distribution requirements, and a flexible way for curricula to build general education requirements into their programs. The main questions on the table at our next meeting will have to do with: -- considering an 'overlay' of competencies that would replace the dimensional system that is no longer used; -- the future implementation of general education requirements through an institutional 'center.'
Please mark your calendars, keep your eyes open for further documents from the council.
