No Pelicans, Loons, Terns today at Lake Chapman (obviously the tropical depression weather brought some interesting birds inland, see GABO). Only 2 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS.
Also, I think I saw a Eastern Ribbon Snake at Lake Herrick http://srelherp.uga.edu/snakes/thasau.htm Is that possible?

Almost forgot. Last night while waiting for the STFLs to show up I saw a pair of LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES. They were on the powerline at the corner of Old Rocky Branch and Hodges Mill. I also spotted a grasshopper stuck on the fence.

Thanks Mirko, yes Winter would be best there I reckon for the HL. Also, could the "hoot" you heard perhaps be a bark from a Red(dog)Fox? Edited 06-17-2013 03:57 PM

Hi Jonathan,
this park seems to have some quite interesting grassland portion, potentially good for Sparrow migration in Oct/Nov. Unfortunately, I have never been in there, just saw it from the road when driving to the Landfill. Horned larks, though usually only occasionally seen during migration/winter in Clarke County, might have bred in the fields along Charlie Bolton Road in the very far North East of the county this year(seen in April there, along with the Upland Sandpiper).

Some interesting habitat at Athens' 'SouthEast Park' off Lexington Rd.
Just there recently:
A singing Yellow-breasted Chat along the service vehicle road near the skatepark Lovely singing Field Sparrow next to the newly planted pines Woodthrushes singing on the woodland trails Tree Swallows mingling with Barn and NRWs on the playing fields. Could be good Purple Martin habitat. The meadow habitat is particularly compelling, wouldn't be surprised if a horned lark or two showed up at some point.

Keep a lookout for Jackie Choi's short movie about an ORAS field trip to Whitehall Forest at the upcoming AthFest FilmFest, screening at Ciné this week. I think there's a showing at 7pm this Wednesday. How many ORAS regulars can you spot on the big screen? More details here: http://athfest.com/music-festival/film

I walked Cook's Trail this morning from 6-9 am. Had no success with Beaver or Otter, but finally got great looks at both PROTHONOTARY (6 singing males) and SWAINSON'S WARBLER (2 singing males, but I saw a third bird, which was not singing). Also very likely heard EASTERN SCREECH OWL, but an unusual single "hooot" call, similar to this one http://www.theowlfoundation.ca/Sounds/EASOhoot_2095.mp3 but not in a row, but less frequently repeated.

We've got a pair that nests in our garage each year. They reuse the nest, after a bit of renovation, for their 2-3 broods every year. We do remove them in the fall though, so they have to start over each spring.

Carolina Wrens are reusing a nest on our front porch. I've been watching their nests for many years, and while I've seen them come back to the same general area for a second or third brood, I've never seen them actually reuse a nest. All seems to be well -- there are at least 2 nestlings, and they are getting feathers rapidly now.

The Cooper's Hawks in the neighborhood have young. Won't be long before their "hawklings" will be causing havoc :-) No crow raiding parties have shown up lately, let's hope it stays that way.

I used the wonderful evening yesterday and the mild early morning today to search the County for Northern Bobwhite - haven't seen/heard them in a while. Yesterday I went to the South Milledge Fields, which look wonderful for Dickcissel, if that species decided to expand its breeding range a little more, and to Morton Road, which almost had no traffic. Today I checked the Landfill and Charlie Bolton Road. I had no success with Bobwhite- maybe they aren't active anymore in June? Or just unpredictable? I came across some nice birds though, for example a yound WILD TURKEY along Charlie Bolton Road and GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS singing at Morton Road (1) and Charlie Bolton Road (1).

Many of you will remember Brad Hogue who was an active member of ORAS for several years. We have just received word of his death on Thurs. night. A service will be held on Fri., June 14, at 11:00 at Emanuel Episcopal Church here in Athens. I hope ORAS will be represented as we meant a lot to him.
