Most of the older photos came from Mary Platten, the current Chair, whose contact details are on the www.derwentsidewerdohl.org.uk website. We are still very much up and running. Why not give her a call?

PRESS RELEASE Consett, 1st August 2005
Germany visitors to Derwentside enjoy Tall Ships
A party from Derwentsides twin-town of Werdohl in the German Sauerland has just returned home after another successful visit. At least two exchange visits a year have been held between Derwentside and its twin town, Werdohl, in north west Germany, with over 1,500 people travelling since the first exchange trip in 1976. Twenty Werdohlers travelled to Derwentside, and were welcomed by the Chair of Derwentside Council, Councillor Mrs Elizabeth Coulson. They stayed with friends in Stanley, Consett and Lanchester and in a packed programme they visited the Tall Ships, watched the firework display, saw the ships set sail for Norway, visited St Pauls and Jarrow Hall, explored Durham and Alnwick enjoyed a flutter at Sunderland Dogs and a farewell party at the Raven Hotel in Ebchester.
Graham Jordan, Chair of the Derwentside-Werdohl Friendship Club said: Our German friends have had a great time here in Derwentside, despite the poor weather later in the week. Weve had a very busy time and its been nice to be able to show new visitors what Derwentside and the north east has to offer. Going on a friendship visit is a great way to see a different country, experience their culture first hand, meet new people and maybe try a new language, but, most of all, to have a really enjoyable holiday.
Anyone interested in finding out more or visiting Germany next year can contact club Secretary Keith Anthony on 01207 563 552, or visit the Derwentside-Werdohl Friendship Club on the web at www.derwentsidewerdohl.org.uk.
Notes for editors:
The Derwentside Werdohl Friendship Club Derwentside was twinned with Werdohl (pronounced ver-dole) on the 6th April 1975. On the coach on the way back from Werdohl many of the official party felt that it would be nice to develop this bond of twinning in a more informal and friendly way. A collection was made on the coach to help set up the friendship club and in 1976 the first friendly exchanges began as a support to the formal Council to Council exchanges. The industrial heritage of the Werdohl area was steelmaking. The Shotley Bridge Sword Makers came from near Werdohl. The similarities of the area made it an ideal match a similar industrial environment and a similar cultural heritage.
