Greetings Ms. Rionge:

I was in the process of purchasing a Domain name for my new business. But before beginning, I began an inquisitive search to see which agency manage and/or house all domain names. My search resulted in learning of ICANN and your Bio. It pays to challenge the mind and think outside of the box, because I may have never learned of your awesomeness and good work!

In the US, Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, I work for Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the US 4th largest public school district. I serve as a Procurement Management Administrator. Your message board promotes teaching others to work with a sense of urgency and to think outside of the box. You have stated everything I instill into my wonderful staff. This let's me know I'm on target with my management style. You obviously have a passion for education, so if accepted, I would like to send you an autographed copy of the book written recently by my Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Rudolph F. Crew, Ed., with Thomas DYJA, titled: "Only Connect, The Way To Save Our Schools". Dr. Crew asks and motions: "Can our kids compete globally? Yes-If WE get smart. www.rudycrewconnect.com or www.dadeschools.net

Lastly. I am familiar with OWIT, but have lost contact with the founder of this organization over the years. When they visited Miami, I had the pleasure of meeting members at my church.

God bless you in all your endeavors and Happy New Year!

The educational system debate in Kenya and beyond, in general. In the recent past, this has been an ongoing conversation everywhere i go!

At this stage, I believe that we all agree they are indeed deficits in the educational systems that are! There is a need to evolve from a culture, where instruction based and cramming methodologies, to pass exams, whose days are long gone, must come to pass. If the government/private sector has any real intentions in forging economic improvements, it must start with a serious self-actualization of what works. As follows;

1. We need to identify other methodologies of learning beyond the ones we focus on and will in most cases die for, the degree process and focus in this country and others is creating a deadlock for fostering initiative driven from the self entrepreneurship and open mindedness of thinking out of the box. Today's Jua Kali is tomorrows economic boost for industry, but one would argue that these new economy businesses are not poised to meet the criterions set by those who see things from a narrow and in the box, already not working poverty eradication concepts. At the end, practical teaching gains more benefits, and this is a missing link in our educational process today.

2. The systematic approach methods of developing ICT opportunities and other areas of possible partnerships, is missing. It is obvious that the current structure of government is suffering the same major issues of private sector where decisions are made in silo's and therefore in most cases, have no connectivity with the larger potential benefit which brings about first time, first right equals success. The organizations that create capacity to involve key recourses in their decision-making processes stand a better chance of knowledge transfer and ability to plan succession. If succession structures were in place, we would be aligning those stepping out into the market to take up new positions that foster capacity to bridge the current glaring gaps, which will hinder growth in the coming years.

3. We need a serious intervention on how we communicate as a people; we also need to start hearing each other’s views. They are too much of an adherence to status quo, anything that is different has to be questioned and then questioned instead of opening ourselves to possibilities. The fact is we are a developing economy; we are not the first and or the last to pass through this passage of development. What I believe we MUST do is to embrace changes together and to break the structures of the norms. What do I mean? We cannot continue to use the local benchmarks of the past into the future of Kenya, we must look at the external benchmarks of other countries, of cause as you read this you will argue that we do this, well the fact is, since we are not high risk takers on areas we are not good at, we end up recoiling to local benchmarks. The extent of this is that our own are recognized by outsiders, we do not even notice them. Look around you… anyway, I must admit that this is slowly changing, in fact I am very excited by the new approach of positioning the new generation of entrepreneurs who are up and coming and moving at very high speeds, which I encourage and appreciate. The only concern being we are not seeing these young and energetic minds being absorbed in key decision making positions. What I would like to see more is knowledge transfer from the godfathers and godmothers who need to move into more advisory roles and leave the busy, working and engagement structures of boards and executive leadership positions to younger executives. Again, someone would argue but they are not mature and even not exposed enough, well, who are these people being lead and coached by???? Who coached those before you and how is it that you can do it and others cannot. In South Africa the Black Empowerment is working, even though with some difficulty, but working never the less. If you teach a man how to fish, your better off than feeding him for life… well the saying goes something like that….

4. Well, having been in the training and development arena for one year, these are my findings.
a) We are not a reading or continuous learning society
b) We are exposed, but narrow minded in our views for change and improvement, perhaps this is brought about by the fact, since one is educated (has a degree(s) they know all that they need to know and they are therefore not interested in furthering their scope of continued improvement of knowledge. If one were an expert in IT for instance, how would you better improve your marketability and scope of understanding the business dynamics of your area of interest?
c) Self initiative and drive is a value that people must respect, in my findings, I have realized that people replace their own potential for success with someone else, other than themselves, of cause this statement will be used to counter a statement on this very email, but the questions are, who is leading whom? Where are we headed? What are the values that we hold and how do those with whom we interact with recognize them. At the end, this election process should teach us a lesson or two, I cannot wait for the announcements. But in the end, if you are reading in between the lines, it is time for ACTION. Seating on the fence is for the fearful and weak. Forging forward is for the strong and confident in self. Looking at the entire continent we have a huge potential but we must stand up to be counted. Let’s not look at those we know and expect them to take the leap of faith, they are already doing it, what are you doing??? Secondly, quest for knowledge without the competency to apply that, that one knows is yet another area of great weakness. In other words, knowledge should equal competence coupled with the ability to change the mindset, which of cause yet another area that needs a paradigm shift.

Well, enough said all is not lost, Kenya is indeed scaling and we need to forge forward with confidence and ability to cease the moment as Kenyans, otherwise others will come to benefit. They are already working in your back yards etc…

To all those, who I have not responded to, I apologize for not responding on time and thank you for your comments.

Well, it has indeed been a fantastic and equally challenging year. We commenced business in October of 2006 and to-date I am a proud owner of this new business initiative that is clearly going to blossom in a little while….
Why do I say this, in the year under review, in our consulting division we had the pleasure of getting involved with Safaricom, Suntra Investment Bank and Ericsson whose assignments were successful. Recently we have been contracted by a Mauritius based, not for profit organization. Whose delivery area of focus is on strategy development, gap analysis, and quality management systems development and implementation. In some cases, training and coaching will be a continuous delivery area for the next year.

In our training division, we had the pleasure of being involved with Coop Bank for a short stint that was organized by Power Play who brought us in as part of a consortium of trainers to train on the Power of Purpose in line with the changes that were taking place at the bank, which we delivered successfully. This whole experience was very exciting, the entire staff of 1400 employees participated in this process; you have to congratulate the CEO in seeing this value for change. Equally, Ericsson Kenya engaged us in corporate coaching and training, in particular harmonizing the team dynamics at two levels, where team building/alignment with corporate objectives is the primary focus. In our public training sessions we delivered Quality Management Systems (QMS) and Information Security Management Systems (ISMS) Lead Auditor accredited International Standards (ISO) training respectively at the Safari Park Hotel. The target audience, were senior staff from small and medium size organizations including but not limited to Ernst and Young, Discount Securities, Communication Commission of Kenya (CCK), Ebenezer Communications, SOS Rwanda, and ABC Bank amongst others. These were the focus areas for the first year.

We are now well into our second year, currying on with the project relationships that we engaged in, last year whilst creating capacity for new ones with vigor and excitement. A recent facilitation at the UN Complex promises to open doors at the international level for additional consultancy services and training. The experience with African Youth from Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Ethiopia was an eye opener and a very inspiring one. I had a chance to interact with Glocal Forum, World Bank and UN Habitat.

So, in balancing the operations and growth of Ignites’ revenue generation. We have developed one and three day programs. These relevant personal development programs are Discover Your Purpose, Effective Leadership (scheduled for delivery January 22, 23 and 24) and Entrepreneurial Capacity Building & Business Planning, which will be schedule throughout the coming year. Discover Your Purpose has been well received by the market and the first series of sessions have been very successful. So far, participants are spreading the workshop by word of mouth, which we appreciate greatly. During the DYP one-day workshop, we deal with a number of areas related to your personal life. In particular, the financial and wealth creation session is very telling, interesting and a memorable experience. I am so excited at how these programs are taking shape. These new business development areas were driven by the financial report for 2006/07. It was obvious where the market was aligning its interest. After soul searching we realized the need to quickly re-group and re-think. We are convinced that the new products will deliver more value for money to our clients and customers.

The international arena is also an interesting opportunity. I am hopeful that I will be running a one-day Teen’s session in Toronto, Canada early in 2008. In the meantime, I am developing a web interactive and e-commerce driven portal that will create private chat rooms and possibly a blog or wiki for our participants to continue engaging one another. This platform will help us sell streams of our on going sessions and programs to the lnternational market place as well as help create a discussion forum that can help participants to continue to engage each other for progress!

At a personal level, changes have been related to learning and aligning from a pure service business that did not require my direct involvement in determining whether I get paid or not. Running a business where if I am not working I have NO MONEY has been quiet a re-learning experience and an eye opener, life really in time brings you to the beginning, this is how it was when I was a hairdresser. I am not complaining, I am just noting the distinct difference. In fact, this has other benefits, consultants understand that they only get paid for work they have done. Which is helping Ignites’ general structure going forward, if you cannot carry your weight, you ship out, as others cannot be responsible for your payroll…. Unless of cause you are handling administration processes which are clearly related to the work output, which drives the revenue generation. Importantly, I am able to drop and pick Waruiru from school. This is such a pleasure coming from my previous structure/process or work lifestyle. I also have benefited three holidays with family in simply 16 months. What an accomplishment compared to what I was used too. Mind you for all of my 22 years of working, I have always taken at least two weeks off annually as a rule. You know life is short, you must enjoy as you move along.

So, in a nutshell, if you are in the middle of planning your next career development or business alignment! Join us at one of our three workshops, Discover Your Purpose, Effective Leadership and Entrepreneurial Capacity Building & Business Planning programs.

I recently, finished developing my 50-year plan, the roadmap that takes me to 2057. God willing I will be alive and kicking even then… be blessed.

Just read your feature story in Thursday's Money Magazine in the Daily Natoin. Great stuff,we hope to hear more of Ignite Consulting. Many young Kenyans have money to Invest yet, this money is taken down the drain by partying, liquor, unplanned spending etc.To go to lengths of cutting your hair to cut on Salon costs, wao, that's a first have heard. Its about time I put into practise your suggestions...putting it down on paper, courage to saying no to always going out..etc

Thanks for your hard work.I run a small comunications company here in Kenya.Due to the limitation facing small companies in raising capital for expansion and diversification am left with no alternative to raise funds other than issue debentures or preference shares.Which of the two do you advise someone to follow.

You really are a mover and shaker. Only God knows where you are headed next. By the way, why did you get out of Wananchi? I used to think that Wananchi was Njeri and Njeri was Wananchi? If you dont mind I would like to know, otherwise what I know is that whatever you are upto gal, it must be spot on horizontal mobility. Keep going.

Njeri,
I applaud your efforts. Your message is clear. Our generation must capitalize on delivering innovative new ideas and not be constrained by the legacy vision of the past. There is no need to replicate what we used to do when we can innovate upon the future."you cannot become what you want to be, until you stop being what you are today".It's time for change!!! We need more people like you to deliver the message accross.

A new dawn for Kenya MUST come alive! We must be involved with the required change's, we must bridge the gap for new 21st century thinking!!! 2007 requires a paradigm shift from where we all sit. It is with this in mind, that the Inaugural Women In Business workshop for November 24th and 25th, at the Safari Park Hotel, will take place. I am a firm believer that the opportunity that we have as Kenyans and Africans is enormous. We need to engage with one another to plan for the success... for more see www.igniteconsulting.co.ke

The entire theme is based on Business with the Woman in Mind...

We will be hosting in January on for Men In Business, more on this later....

Hello Ken, No I do not have e-books yet. I am working and thinking strategy at the moment. I hope to accomplish a number of goals first and then produce the books. I looked at your website and enjoyed it. Keep up the thinking and pass it on to others. It is a sure way for holistic success; by this I mean real wealth creation that encompasses all understanding and all aspects of life. Also, do not forget that those who think different from you are not wrong; they just need to see meaning to your existing views. The idea I think is to encourage and inspire people on ways to achieve meaningful life. You and I included. All the time... and as you and I would know; it is not an easy task.... Focus and determination takes us where we want to go and be!

Well, I am finally back!!! Many things good and not so good have happened in the last one and a half months. The best and good things in my life are stepping down from the operational day to day running of Wananchi Online which will offer me valued time to share my experiences (22 years!!!) with others through professional and life skill coaching. I am currently creating the concepts which will commence into a business and services September 2006, my new office will be located in Westlands at the Eden Square Center. Also, during this same period I was short listed to interview for the Uchumi CEO position which was an amazing experience, well, it started with a call on a Saturday at 6pm, the call was followed by preparation for a presentation scheduled for the following Monday in front of an interviewing panel of 6 people, thereafter a 25-30 panel, and a 15 panel final interview, well needless to say, I did not get the job BUT the experience was Amazing and importantly got me prepared for any future interviews of that magnitude and intensity. I also lost US $2000 buying a new ticket to join the family on holiday since the original tickets were worthless after missing my flight for the love of my country, my family had left me behind to attend to my passion for reviving fallen or creating new companies. The last time this happened was the then MediPlus Insurance co. which had no reason to collapse at all if this country had capacity to step in and do the right thing… so when the collapse of Uchumi happened I was adamant that if the job came my way I would do whatever it took to get it back up, notwithstanding that I was never interested in a long term position because of my consulting passion on coaching on professional and life skills. This is an area that needs much attention for the economic good of KENYA and AFRICA as a whole. I have since taken the holiday, visit to Ireland, and an Island out in Canada where only a boat ride would get you there for a few days, this was great experience and meet with a lot of family and friends. Oh, and least I forget, I got my induction as a member of the board of Unilever Tea, a visit to Kericho highlands, this was magnificent, the CSR for Unilever surpasses any that I have seen yet, they are a company to reckon with, I must say I was very impressed, honored to be a director on there board. So on the Not so good side, I lost my younger brother to a road accident, he died instantly. He was young, with a ten-year-old son and wife whom both need continued support and so on, so I am trying to get Wairimu his wife a job. But as we all know we are all going to die, in fact if there is ever anything that is certain, this is it.

So, look out for my new services at a location near you. The website is currently under construction.

The BOOK, will take sometime before it is rolled out, the schedule for talks will be posted in due time. At this stage i have set time to address a number of options for the next 6-12 months or so. I will be back with a new update and more to offer then. In the meantime, this message board will be used as a blog and speaking and case study learning is work in progress.

Perhaps in life things do not have to be so clear, at this stage this message board is for myself and those who have no major RULES of operation. It is one to keep a record and to interact with others. What is your issue Quicks Nyakwaka... It is not supposed to please all its visitors either :-)

Importantly, i will in due time be writing a BOOK, since you do care to know...

With thanks.

June 9th, 2006. Finally, a decision has been made; today is a great day and a turning point of my life in the most holistic manner in the very recent past. The stars are shinning, bells are ringing, sun is bright, the sky is blue; my entire being is most calm.
I have heard the opportunity to create enough change to the point where the change has changed me. This is an amazing experience; very few people get to experience this very life changing chance. It is and will be a new dawn of wonderful things to come and I feel real good….:-) more on this later!

It's Monday 22nd, May 06; I have just done a turn around trip to the states and on the way back to Nairobi in less then 5 days with back-to-back meetings from arrival to the day before departure. It feels crazy, exhausting and interesting all at the same time. Thing is, I am heading back to a time boom of things to do and serious decisions to make. My job seems to be taking a turn into the right direction once and for all, the last three years have been the most interest yet intimidating time of my career life, which is coming to an end, or so I hope... Like most family businesses, the relationships of co-owners in business has its positive and negative effects.... in my case the positive supercedes the negative, even this is relative, but I find that in life, one has to learn from the most difficult experiences. However, most do not learn as they opt to defer to personalization of things and times gone bad... me on the other hand, I like to turn challenges into successes and positive outcomes. I am very proud of the experiences so far; importantly I am very proud of the people with whom this learning process has been experienced with... I am certain that one day in the not so far future, we will look back and understand the success of all our pains together... hopefully and laugh…joy be unto thee….

Dear All, I am seating in a meeting with the board members of ICANN, in Santa Monica. (This is our 2nd Board Retreat). The interesting message I want to send at this moment is the experience that I had yesterday evening in a cocktail held between staff and board members. During this amazing moment, introductions were made by all the staff and members of the board, I cannot tell you just how enriching this experience was for me in recognition of the number of extremely dynamic and comprehensive mix of experts in the room from all parts of the globe. It is such a breath of fresh air to have the opportunity to mix with this broad mix of cultures of unique yet complex people ?. This is what we are, we work extremely hard and yet the work out put today for all of us continues to be met with challenges and huge criticism, like no other organization that I know.... What is obvious, we are creating an organization that is unique; even the UN is not as diverse (relatively in respect to direct diverse participation etc)…. visit www.icann.org within the ICANN structure you will find all kinds of participants in the different constituencies and supporting organizations.

Evans, have you applied? This should be the first step. Unless you send your CV, to all the potential companies, the comment on how complex it is to get a job is not valid. Just by you asking if we have vacancies is a good indicator that you have not asked or checked. In most cases, your success starts with your passion to get seen, heard and engaged. This can only happen if you have made a decision that you will be engaged no matter what, some examples, get in, even for free, and prove yourselves to be the very best. They are other ways as well... choices are yours!!!! When I returned from the states, the first instance was to go into business, the business I set up made money but was a no brainier! I got bored and found a way to get into Haco Industries, with a view to provide an audit of the organization. Just after the review was over, a position came open; I got the job based on the recommendations that I had offered to their board. Take time to strategize on what you want in your career path and decide how best to win.

Graham, you know the saying, you never burn your bridges is so TRUE, it's not even funny. To think that you are in the UK, we have not meet in say nine (9) years and today the Internet brings us together in the most interesting scenario. I am so grateful for your comment, acknowledgement and encouragement. It surely goes to show that if you set out to do the right thing, it surely pays, no matter how long it takes, it DOES PAY!!!. Thank you... :-)

Having worked with Njeri in her earlier years as an Internet pioneer and know her as a friend and colleague I can assure any unqualified bystanders who are viewing her achievements from the outside, to look further before you judge! There are some people, in the great scheme of things on our planet, that try and make a difference for the better, for all or us, and Njeri is one of them.

Barbara, thank you. I have a smile on my face :-). I am confident that we will prevail. It takes a few steps each time, it takes one to forge the way, it takes courage to learn from others, it took you to give me courage. It takes your knowledge of God to know that they are much bigger ideals and concepts that only we were destined for; be blessed.

Congratulations Njeri for your great efforts and sacrifice. Indeed you have made us proud and restored women's confidence in our country. Your acievements is a testimony to your dedication and hard work which has made you receive recognition not only in Kenya but around the world. Ignore idiots like Swaleh who have nothing between their noses.

Great women of Africa, soldier on and let no one intimidate you. You have our support

Swaleh, Sadly you seem very short sighted in your opinion, I am not just advertising myself as you put it. I am positioning myself for I have already been recognized through my hard earned work, I have spent a better time of my life making a difference at HOME, and when home is not enough, I go far and wide, for my God is everywhere!!! FOR THE RECORD! It has never been about money for me. But what do you know!!! Everything in Kenya is about MONEY most of the time; this is why we are in the situation that we are in as a country, needless to say....

By the way, it is your very swahili saying that has brought me where I have come from... :-) I Understand it only too well. Ironic is it not. Do not make judgment of others, it is only in Gods will that he has brought each and everyone one of us where we are TODAY... Have a Blessed Week.

Njeri Rionge,
Are you advertising yourself to earn jobs and eventually have few "coins" in your pocket?. Why cant you learn from a swahili saying that "kizuri chajiuza, kibaya chajitembeza". Utajiuza ufike wapi? why do you want to speak internationally yet there are a myriad of problems at home.

Stop this hypocracy and work at home. Wacha kutafuta pesa kote mama wewe.

Update on recent activities:
1. Well, as though the structure of boards do not create opportunities to engage you in ways that you would not always expect, the month of October 2005, marked the historical board retreat for ICANN’s board, it was the first of the very much needed board retreat, which had been spoken of by members of the board for as long as 2 and a half years maybe even longer. The December 2005 meeting in Vancouver will make the end of my first term and the beginning of a second term after a rigorous evaluation and re-election process. I have to say that the ICANN’s nominations process is the most precise and comprehensive process I have come across, most boards should borrow a leaf from ICANN. I am humbled to be on a board of an International organization that has struggled to be recognized as such, until the end of the WSIS, who’s end repositioned ICANN, the struggle has been stimulating and encouraging. Well Done, Board, Management and Staff of ICANN for a successful outcome.
2. In October 2005, my husband and I finalized refurbishments of our new home, we moved and settled in one week, prayers and house warming was done the first weekend of our being there, most guests thought we had been living in the house for months ? this says something about our capabilities I think… John you made the entire move very successful, thank you for being a good team partner ?. In case you are wondering John is my beloved husband. With whom I am able to achieve most of the achievements that have been accomplished this year. Our first anniversary is coming up December 22, 2005 God Willing…
3. November 2005- Wananchi's Board and Management concluded with the assistance of hired advisors the acquisition/merger of ISP Kenya. This was the most enlightening highlight of my career life. The IPO process will continue to offer interesting and intriguing insights to negotiations and processes of taking a local indigenous company incorporated by us, onto the Nairobi Stock Exchange and beyond.
4. In this very month, we engaged Sunny Bindra a renowned strategic and corporate governance consultant to facilitate and drive the joint Board and Management of both ISP Kenya and Wananchi Online on a three day strategic retreat, to enable both groups to bond and exchange ideas as well as get to know one another better, this was a very exciting time for me in particular, the process was holistic, they were three groups that were formed to prepare three strategic plans representing Wananchi Online’s five year strategic plan. I was not to participate in the three part sessions in case I was seen to persuade the teams to decide in my favor what the five year plan would be; that said when the presentations were done, I was the most enlightened person, WHY? Because all three reports were nor different from the already existing strategies. Yet the group of participants including the new members of board and staff of ISP Kenya as well as New management staff from the Wananchi Online’s side, had not engaged in these discussions previous to the retreat. We are expected to receive a full report from Sunny Bindra, week starting the 6th of December 2005. More on this EXCITING process later ?

Graham, :-) it is amazing that i read from you and your comments on my achievements, may i make it public, that if it was not for you spotting me the day i walked into Form-net Africa to apply for the sales and marketing position. I would never have found my passion "the internet" thanks to you, i am where i am today. Would love to catch up and talk...

Again, the internet plays its role of keeping people connected and talking irrespective of time or distance!!!

Micheal, thank you for posting, where are you now? The process for listing is midway as i write this note, the presentations to private placement participants is currently underway. We are hopeful that the IPO will happen May/June of 2006, under a year from now. I must say the process has been one of my most shaping and challenging experiences, as our lead advisor said yesterday during a celebratory drink of Champign, (after an agreement made between us and an upcoming M&A) the process was painful due to the fact that most of us were vargins in the process itself. :-) Your interest in our stock is highly appreciated. You have been a supporter and a confidant, thank you.

Thank you very much Njeri for your vote of confidence in me. Thank you also for agreeing to be my mentor and for having great faith in my business ideas. That meant a lot to me. Your insights and inspiration have made me realize that I can use my ordinary mind in an extraordinary manner by believing that I can do anything if I think that I can do it. This is indeed the first step towards achieving my goal of financial independence.

Thank you Duncan, meeting you was a great pleasure. I wish you the very best in your endeavors. You have great ideas, the future is bright, remember however, you must assess yourself, to confirm that you have the capacity to withhold the challenges that come with the risk of going into your own business. Partnerships and sharing the risk with others is a good idea, but requires partnerships with people of like minds.

Hi there all, it has been a long while since i posted a message, i have been involed in a lot of interesting activities, one of which has been to balance my new life changing experience of marriage into a fun, personal growth oriented and exciting process. My previous state was to balance life with my daughter and work, i must say that the addition of my husband has been quite an experience.
Notwithstanding that i am now in the process of inducting additional new management staff, after a long process of re-engineering the organizational structure in line with the role competence required for each position within my co owned business, in the internet sector with a view to listing the business on the Nairobi Stock Exchange (NSE).
This process has been my most challenging and exciting of all the out of the box thinking processes i have undertaken so far.
more later....
