"...the initial shuttle took 2 hours from the scheduled start..."

Oh man. I would have been jumping outta my skin. I really appreciate an early and/or organized shuttle. (Kudos to SJCC & PKCG for prompt and efficient starts!)

Volunteers Needed for Operation River Bright, June 28th, 2008

Volunteer boaters are needed on Saturday, June 28th to help remove litter from the river accesses, shorelines and islands along targeted sections of the Lower Delaware River between Easton-Phillipsburg and Riegelsville. Sign-in and shuttle begins at 8:00 AM and the cleanup will last until approximately 2 PM. Pre-registration is required (see below).

Operation River Bright offers a wonderful opportunity for recreational paddlers, fishermen, local residents, and organizations to give something back to the river by helping clean-up unsightly trash and debris, much of it left by the recent floodwaters.

To register and/or learn more about River Bright, please email John Brunner at rivergeek@verizon.net . When registering please indicate what kind of boat you will be using. Further details about meeting time and place, shuttle arrangements and other details will be provided to registered volunteers.

The greatest need is for paddlers with canoes, but kayakers are also welcome. All paddlers will be required to wear a PFD while underway. We are also seeking a few powerboats and boaters to help out.

Operation River Bright is an American Canoe Association (americancanoe.org) sanctioned event, which means that we always follow their safety guidelines at all times. In the interest of safety and liability concerns we have found it is preferable to conduct river cleanups with people who have some degree of experience paddling on the river (with as many experienced paddlers as possible in the mix). In addition to a safer and more enjoyable experience, we accomplish more!

To register and/or learn more about River Bright please email John Brunner at rivergeek@verizon.net .

Kevin, Jerry and I went for a paddle on the Lehigh River today in our
whitewater canoes. Great scenery, some swimming, laughs and lots of fun.

Well, I've got the first half of the role all figured out. Next time, let's do White Haven to Thorpe as a down-river run. 7:00 meeting at the takeout. In the meantime, I'm working on an electric bilge pump and a helmet mounted camera. I'd like to take Joan and John on a low water from White Haven to Rockport when it gets a little warmer.

Wristy Business

Two weeks ago, the 3 Stooges successfully ran the Upper Lehigh; i.e.,
no fatalities. Pumped with confidence, we planned to do the Lower
which is a more difficult run. I had done the Lower last year and
swam much of it. I was excited to try it again to see if I'd
improved my paddling (or my self-rescue!) skills. It was all I
could think about this week.

So it was dismay that I opened this email from Jerry on Wednesday night:
"Bad news...I may have broken my right wrist while skating last
night. I'll know this afternoon when I get it x-rayed.
I'll keep you posted."

A broken wrist would prevent Jerry from paddling. And I thought it
unsafe to run the Lower with only 2 paddlers. Our plans for paddling
were in serious jeopardy. Made for grumpy office days.

Later on, Jerry emailed that his wrist, while injured, is not broken.
"Let's do the Upper." Not exactly as planned, but at least we'd be
paddling. All set to go and mentally prepared to do the Upper. Then
Jerry calls: "I was riding my motorcycle and the wrist seems okay.
Let's do the Lower."
(!!!)

4:30am Saturday. Up and out of bed - made my lunch and coffee.
Headed out to rendezvous with Steve at Quakertown at 6am. Steve was
prompt as usual. When transferring gear, Steve found that he'd left
his lunch at home. As Steve is always quite organized, this was an
unsettling omen. We drove up to Jim Thorpe and met Jerry about 6:50.
We are 3 who believe that if you're on time, you're late. Jerry,
normally organized, said that he too had forgotten his lunch. This
added to my growing anxiety about this trip.

We cartopped our 3 canoes and headed up to the put-in at Rockport.
The parking lot was empty! (Of course, it was a little before 8 in
the morning).

We put-in and were immediately treated to some beefy waves and
maneuvering at "Entrance". The Lower Gorge is stunningly beautiful
and full of challenging rapids and rock gardens, with occasional
sections of flatwater in between. We had a fantastic run and few
swims. And Jerry's wrist, while sore, was holding up pretty well.

We finished up about 1:30 and loaded up the canoes. As we drove back
to the put-in, Jerry said: "Ya know, we already have a car at
Rockport.... let's do the Upper!"
So I watched Rockport go by as
Jerry drove us to White Haven. We did a mid-afternoon run on the
Upper as the Ace was shutting off the water at the dam. We had a
surprisingly good run and each of us (tired canoeists) swam at least
once on this (easier) section.

We topped off the day with some plentiful and delicious grub at the
Ugly Mug. What fun to be 12 again!!

Great time out on the Lower and Upper Lehigh yesterday.

We all did pretty well on the Lower Gorge. I think we were all tired
when we did a second paddle on the upper Lehigh, resulting in a few
swims.

The Lehigh proves one thing...I can steer and BOOF. Due my strained hand, I had to save strength for emptying the boat. Well, I'm doing a church paddle on the Wading this Saturday and an SJCC-Mullica paddle on the 21st. In the meantime, I have to finish a research paper and work on a thesis. I would rather go paddling...hurry up October...graduation!

Hi,
Could anyone tell me aproximately how long a trip it is from Willow Grove Lake to Sherman Ave.
or Willow Grove Lake to Almond Ave.
Length in both terms of miles and paddle times.
Thanks

I was just told that Carl Lampe has passed on. We stopped in to visit with him on the last Maurice River trip. The viewing is Tuesday and the funeral is Wednesday 18th. Carl rented canoes on the Maurice for years and was the number-one tree planter in the state. Please hold a moment of silence in remembrance on your next trip.
