forwarded from the Musconetcong Watershed Association for anyone interested in paddling the Musky up north:

"Paddling the Musconetcong River - Everything You Need To Know About Canoeing and Kayaking a National Treasure"

Saturday October 4, 2008 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

The Merrill Creek Visitor Center Auditorium

All are welcome, novice and experienced paddlers alike, to register for this class. This interactive, indoor short-course is designed for both novice and experienced paddlers who would like to know where and when to paddle the Musky, what to seek out, and what to avoid altogether. Join John Brunner, river advocate, avid paddler and former MWA Executive Director for a virtual tour down the Musconetcong River as he shares his nearly two decades of studying, photographing, writing about and, of course, canoeing his favorite waterway. The course will cover general information about paddling local streams in cold weather, address the various advantages and disadvantages of canoes and kayaks for different types of water, safety issues and appropriate clothing for fall and winter boating. Brunner is the Chair of the Delaware Valley Division of the American Canoe Association and serves on the American Canoe Association's National Board of Directors. This is an indoor class, we will not be going in the water.

This class will be held in the Merrill Creek Visitor Center auditorium located at 34 Merrill Creek Road, Washington New Jersey (www.merrillcreek.com). Please call (908) 537-7060 or e-mail beth@musconetcong.org to register for the course or for details. $25 fee includes lunch, Musconetcong Waterway Trail Guide and Delaware River Water Trail Guide. To register online or for more details visit www.musconetcong.org

*October Paddling Trips*

Saturday October 11, 2008 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Hampton to Franklin Township

Saturday October 18, 2008 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Butler Park to Asbury

Sunday October 19, 2008 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Beattystown to Butler Park

Saturday October 25, 2008 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Beattystown to Hampton

The MWA is offering canoe and kayak paddling trips covering the 4 segments on the Musconetcong River listed above. The trips are timed to take advantage of the good flow and depth conditions due to the release of water from Lake Hopatcong. (Every fifth year the lake is lowered to allow for dock maintenance and weed removal.) Because of expected river conditions, these trips are not suitable for the true novice – we do plan to schedule additional trips for beginners soon. Trip leader John Brunner will evaluate your level of experience when you e-mail him to register. All participants must register for each trip by e-mailing John at riverhealer@gmail.com al least one week before your chosen trip, registration will be limited to 15 paddlers per trip so register soon. Details are available upon registration. Location of each trip is subject to change based on river conditions. Participants must be properly equipped for cold water paddling. Members $10, non-members $15, payable on the day of the trip.

With the current weather pattern it seems like lots of people do not show since the weather-people are all so positive it is going to rain all day. However, ran the Maurice on 4th of July with no rain drops save those that occured before 10:am.

Are any takers for July 6 sunday --tomorrow on the Menatico?. Meeting 10 am at Heritages convenience store and gas station off Route 55 south in Millville.

We need to figure out if we really want to do the Conowingo breakfast paddle tomorrow. The weather looks iffy at best. Reply with your thoughts (to steve@pennkayaker.com) and we will come to a consensus before nightfall.

I personally am not adverse to paddling in the rain if others are so inclined, however I prefer to not to drive several hours if nobody else is coming.

Another option is that we could move the paddle to a "local" location with a pavilion such as Towpath Park along the Schuylkill and do a short shuttle paddle down to Linfield Fireman's Park after breakfast.

Its up to you all.

I did not know Carl very well, but met him a few times as we took the side channel on the Maurice River to his house. He was always welcoming and had a smile; you could tell that he was one of the "good ones". Carl, I hope that you now have endless days of sunny skies and good paddling on a fine river out there.

I was just told that Carl Lampe has passed on. We stopped in to visit with him on the last Maurice River trip. The viewing is Tuesday and the funeral is Wednesday 18th. Carl rented canoes on the Maurice for years and was the number-one tree planter in the state. Please hold a moment of silence in remembrance on your next trip.

Well, I'm doing a church paddle on the Wading this Saturday and an SJCC-Mullica paddle on the 21st. In the meantime, I have to finish a research paper and work on a thesis. I would rather go paddling...hurry up October...graduation!

Great time out on the Lower and Upper Lehigh yesterday.

We all did pretty well on the Lower Gorge. I think we were all tired
when we did a second paddle on the upper Lehigh, resulting in a few
swims.

Wristy Business

Two weeks ago, the 3 Stooges successfully ran the Upper Lehigh; i.e.,
no fatalities. Pumped with confidence, we planned to do the Lower
which is a more difficult run. I had done the Lower last year and
swam much of it. I was excited to try it again to see if I'd
improved my paddling (or my self-rescue!) skills. It was all I
could think about this week.

So it was dismay that I opened this email from Jerry on Wednesday night:
"Bad news...I may have broken my right wrist while skating last
night. I'll know this afternoon when I get it x-rayed.
I'll keep you posted."

A broken wrist would prevent Jerry from paddling. And I thought it
unsafe to run the Lower with only 2 paddlers. Our plans for paddling
were in serious jeopardy. Made for grumpy office days.

Later on, Jerry emailed that his wrist, while injured, is not broken.
"Let's do the Upper." Not exactly as planned, but at least we'd be
paddling. All set to go and mentally prepared to do the Upper. Then
Jerry calls: "I was riding my motorcycle and the wrist seems okay.
Let's do the Lower."
(!!!)

4:30am Saturday. Up and out of bed - made my lunch and coffee.
Headed out to rendezvous with Steve at Quakertown at 6am. Steve was
prompt as usual. When transferring gear, Steve found that he'd left
his lunch at home. As Steve is always quite organized, this was an
unsettling omen. We drove up to Jim Thorpe and met Jerry about 6:50.
We are 3 who believe that if you're on time, you're late. Jerry,
normally organized, said that he too had forgotten his lunch. This
added to my growing anxiety about this trip.

We cartopped our 3 canoes and headed up to the put-in at Rockport.
The parking lot was empty! (Of course, it was a little before 8 in
the morning).

We put-in and were immediately treated to some beefy waves and
maneuvering at "Entrance". The Lower Gorge is stunningly beautiful
and full of challenging rapids and rock gardens, with occasional
sections of flatwater in between. We had a fantastic run and few
swims. And Jerry's wrist, while sore, was holding up pretty well.

We finished up about 1:30 and loaded up the canoes. As we drove back
to the put-in, Jerry said: "Ya know, we already have a car at
Rockport.... let's do the Upper!"
So I watched Rockport go by as
Jerry drove us to White Haven. We did a mid-afternoon run on the
Upper as the Ace was shutting off the water at the dam. We had a
surprisingly good run and each of us (tired canoeists) swam at least
once on this (easier) section.

We topped off the day with some plentiful and delicious grub at the
Ugly Mug. What fun to be 12 again!!

Well, I've got the first half of the role all figured out. Next time, let's do White Haven to Thorpe as a down-river run. 7:00 meeting at the takeout. Volunteers Needed for Operation River Bright, June 28th, 2008

Volunteer boaters are needed on Saturday, June 28th to help remove litter from the river accesses, shorelines and islands along targeted sections of the Lower Delaware River between Easton-Phillipsburg and Riegelsville. Sign-in and shuttle begins at 8:00 AM and the cleanup will last until approximately 2 PM. Pre-registration is required (see below).

Operation River Bright offers a wonderful opportunity for recreational paddlers, fishermen, local residents, and organizations to give something back to the river by helping clean-up unsightly trash and debris, much of it left by the recent floodwaters.

To register and/or learn more about River Bright, please email John Brunner at rivergeek@verizon.net . When registering please indicate what kind of boat you will be using. Further details about meeting time and place, shuttle arrangements and other details will be provided to registered volunteers.

The greatest need is for paddlers with canoes, but kayakers are also welcome. All paddlers will be required to wear a PFD while underway. We are also seeking a few powerboats and boaters to help out.

Operation River Bright is an American Canoe Association (americancanoe.org) sanctioned event, which means that we always follow their safety guidelines at all times. In the interest of safety and liability concerns we have found it is preferable to conduct river cleanups with people who have some degree of experience paddling on the river (with as many experienced paddlers as possible in the mix). In addition to a safer and more enjoyable experience, we accomplish more!

To register and/or learn more about River Bright please email John Brunner at rivergeek@verizon.net .

Scott W.  316

I did. We did the middle section from Lee's Bridge to New Bridge, about 8 miles. The first 7 miles where fine with only a few scrapes, none for any extended distance. The last mile is one long series of rock gardens with few breaks. Because of the low water level, we were weaving and dodging like a slalom course. At points there was no way through without scraping over submerged rocks.

Only one boat got truly stuck, a canoe with two occupants.

I did get as close to a bald eagle (and his mate) as I have ever been. I was no more than 30 feet from him when he decided that was close enough.

The trip is definitely not for the faint of heart as the initial shuttle took 2 hours from the scheduled start. We where scheduled for a 10AM start but didn't really get started until 10:30AM. We still didn't get on the water until Noon.

Yesterday at Garden Rd. along the Maurice, 2 pieces of sewer scum tried to steal my boat. While I was shuttling down to Sherman, they hid my boat deep in the woods no doubt to return later after dark. The boat was generally ransacked but nothing was taken. I guess there's little market for MylantaŽ and toilet paper. I gave a partial plate number to the police and they are running the alphabet trying to locate the black suv that fled the scene. My blood pressure medicine is working hard today and I am far from calm.

TR: March 22, 2008 - Schuylkill River - Felix Dam to Gibraltar

Saturday was a canoe-fest without a kayak in sight!! Jerry, Joan,
Scot, Joe, Jack, Howard, Kevin and I met up at Felix Dam Park around 9
on a cold and snowy Saturday for a paddle down the swollen Schuylkill.
It was a great start to a great day!!

After we offloaded and ran the shuttle (with Joan hiding in the
extreme back of Scot's Scion) we were off.

First up was Kelly's Lock with its Class II rapid with standing waves
and a splish-splashy ride.

Then we had a few Class I's down to Reading Dam, where the flume was a
bit washed out, but still fun. By this time the snow had stopped and
the weather was looking up.

We continued on to the absolutely fun "lock flume of hell" with its
high walls, two drops and huge standing wave. We all made it down
through without dumping, but we all had a little souvenir of water in
the bottom of our boats.

We pulled out on a little island, dumped out the boats and then ate
our lunch while we discussed how I "lured" reluctant Jerry to his
possible doom (aka another swim) :)

Around the corner we encountered the Cumuru Weir Dam, which was washed
out. We took the easy way around the right side to avoid a tree that
hangs out over the normal path.

The rapid below under the bridges was rocking and rolling and we
splashed our way through.

Before too long we were approaching Gibraltar and the end of our
journey. The sun was out and the sky was blue and we all made it
without swimming.

I would like to thank all those that came out to play and making it a
fun day.

We shuttled at 9:00 and finished by 4:00. Perfect day and no wind on the lake. As I continue with the website upgrade, The LatLon will be in decimal degrees. When you click on the LatLon it will link you to Google Maps. I am going to link the location name to TopoZone. Yes, I did go swimming yesterday. I bought a waterproof jacket to go with the wetsuit and wanted to test it. Just a reminder, you can sign into Kodak and buy the photos.

Vicki's back in her green SOT?! Congrats Vicki on the resurrection of your holey hull. Looks like you had a whale of a time!

And, Jerry, are you emptying your boat again? I do believe you are trying to usurp my position as the SJCC swim sultan. Hmph.

And everyone's in the Shaman!

I rue my absence during most of the SJCC paddling season. Since no one won the POWERBALL last night, my chances are still alive. When I win, I will be free to do the Nescochague. (I'm feeling lucky...)

Good pix, looks like another SJCC good time; although, I didn't see any bleeding or wet paddlers. Guess I'll have to make the next one to create some havoc. I did spot a white Wenonah with a PFD-less, baseball-capped paddler - for a minute, I thought I was there!

Nice to see Jerry & Joe enjoying the Shaman. I don't recall ever seeing the water from the lake spilling down the left bank of the dam - was the Cedar high, or has it always done this?

Cheers,

Basto and Cedar have been linked to Google Maps. Also check out Links for Museum of NJMH. It's like a mini Smithsonian and it's free...they work from donations. I am going to rework the photos and try to make them more viewable by creating an archive as well as current folders for each river. We need to set some dates for future trips. I am locked into June 14 for a church trip. Also, we need to plan a class-one trip for the Delaware north of Port Jervis. Starting on June 21 we will paddle on the third Saturday of every month, year round. This will be the Posted Schedule. Additional trips will be added via the Message and Shuttle Boards. Some of the rivers are in need of clearing. The Egg is NOT runnable from New Brooklyn to Rt 54. The Menantico is clear. See you on the Cedar Saturday.

No Mo'?

I found the links below regarding the draining of the Maurice River's Willow Grove Lake due to the broken dam. The myspace link is a jumbled affair, but I believe the gist of it is that the Nature Conservancy is/was contemplating permanently draining the lake?

Does any SJCC'ers have any news of this? Will canoe access be restricted by the NC?

TR: 01-19-2008 - Toms River, NJ
Jerry, Joan and I paddled the Toms River in the New Jersey Pine
Barrens today. Jerry was in his new Mohawk Shaman, Joan in her
Wenonah Sandpiper and me in my BCW Yellowstone Solo.

For those that have not paddled the Toms River, it is a typical small
twisty Pine Barrens stream and today it was moving along at a good clip.

This trip had everything... plenty of water, nice weather, ear
grabbing sticker bushes, eye poking and hat grabbing trees, running
deer, tree hopping squirrels, soaring hawks, friendly hikers, flying
ducks and geese, tree hugging/limbo practice, some swimming, and some
heart pumping cardio exercise paddling against the flow.

I had a great time and would like to thank Joan for setting it up.

TR: 12-01-2007 - Oswego River

Paddled the Oswego River with the South Jersey Canoe Club today. The
lake was lacking its skin of ice this year, however the paddle was
still most excellent.

On the drive down Oswego Lake Road I saw two deer and a grey fox (who
seemed pretty unconcerned about me driving by slowly).

Once we conducted the shuttle, (with Howard laying in the extreme back
of the van) we paddled across the lake, made our portage and then
headed on our way down the beautiful Oswego River.

To be honest, the stream was pretty shallow today, requiring some
stepping out of the boat to float over the sand bars.

The scenery as always was quite nice, with a few wood ducks and a
heron sighted along the way.

Stopped for lunch at Martha's Pond with its shallow water but
beautiful panorama.

The paddle across Harrisville Pond was windy and the water was shallow
at the upper end.

A great day with nice folks.

I know some of you from JJSKA, I think. I moved to Bivalve, near Port Norris on the Maurice River, in Feb. However, I haven't been kayakking with you yet because...
1. I work on the AJ Meerwald, NJ's tall ship, that often is elsewhere around the state. 2. I hurt my knee. As soon as I recupe from meniscus surgery, I hope to join you on paddles. In the meantime my job has turned F/T. So here's my S.O.S.: I need a small place to live as close and as cheap as possible to Bivalve. I'm single, non-smoker, no pets, take good care of rental places, quiet and often away on the ship from april-nov. Please help me spread the word! Know anything? msg. at 856-785-2060, ext. 107 or avanhemmen@bayshorediscovery.org THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

TR: 09-23-2007 – Staten Island Boat Graveyard

Met up today at Woodbridge Ramp, Sewaren, NJ for a paddle to the
Staten Island Boat Graveyard. We had 10 kayakers (Susan, Vince, Jeff
P., Joan S., John G., Jerry R. and son, Darren and Vicki) and one
brave canoeist (Jerry S).

Once we were all unloaded and ready, we paddled from the small sandy
beach at the ramp, made the channel crossing and paddled North up
Arthur Kill. The northerly paddle was not very difficult despite an
outgoing tide and wind-derived chop.

The graveyard was a little different since I was last there --

First this was my first time here with a low tide and you definitely
get a different perspective of all the ships, boats and barges.

Second, the ship breakers are busy.... breaking up the boats. There
were quite a few boats that were missing from our last visit.

And third, the weather is beating down the old wooden boats and they
were looking worse for wear.

We paddled under, over around and through many different ships, boats
and barges. Jagged edges of long forgotten ships reached out from the
depths to leave their mark on many of our boats.

As we were saying our farewell's to the rusting and rotting boats, one
of our paddlers experienced some seasickness. This required several
instances of towing practice by Jerry S, myself and Vince on our return.

We paddled across the shipping channel and then South, stopping by the
old coal loading towers and the SS Meow Man, where we paddled through
its flooded decks, Jerry R.'s son caught a blue crab, Jerry S. climbed
up on the deck and looked down upon us and we watched as tugs and
tankers did their water dance and cozied up to the pier.

I recommend visiting this interesting location if you have the skills
in the next year or so, I don't think we have too many years left
before this location is but a memory. I have never been disappointed.

For those that missed out on the action or have already forgotten
where we paddled today, I posted some of my photos on my flickr page
at http://www.flickr.com/photos/pennkayaker/sets/72157602135301171/

Can anyone out there tell ne where to put in on the Manumuskin. It seems that the cumberland pond dam on route 49 is bolocked with downed trees. I put in all the way down on the rt. 47 bridge. It made for a long paddle upstream and then back to 47 bridge takeout. The upper manumuskin was loaded with Cardinal flowers coming into bloom. I'd love to see it in bloom without having to go a total round trip.
Any ideas?

Today on the Mullica twenty minutes south of #206 we encountered a small pocket of fire on the port side. Members of the Forestry Service had just arrived and were preparing to pump water from the stream to extinguish the fire. The frequency of burned areas increased as we approached the marsh before the old Mullica Camp. The starboard side of the marsh is mostly burned to the water's edge. There are a few green survivors but not many. The cedars and pines are charred black with needles the color of wheat. They stand in great contrast to the forest on the port side which appears mostly unscathed. A few minutes beyond the beaver dam we left our last charred area astern and the familiar aroma of the pines returned in about another hour.
I am tired and need to get horizontal.
Hope all are well.

Octoraro Trip from Terry  231
04-23-2007 08:06 PM ET (US)
Hi Everyone,
Here is the latest on the Octoraro Trip from Terry Wright from the Wilmington Trail Club.We will be joining them and the Lancaster Canoe Club . The South Jersey Canoe Club will also be there. This is not a Pinelands River so get ready for some riffles and if water levels permit a ride thru Little Niagara (Class II) The American Whitewater Site will show if the section is runnable. I haven't confirmed if this section is Terry's Choice but I know they like to run it if conditions permit. http://www.americanwhitewater.org/rivers/id/732/

You can use Mapquest link for directions

DIRECTIONS TO ENROY GAS KILBY CORNER MD MEETING PLACE

(fyi) Put-in and Take out used in the past for the lower section

For the lower section the put-in is the take-out for the middle, that is at the blue bridge on Horseshoe Road( just south on U.S.1 of RT 273 at a High Shell gas station. The take-out is down (south) the road that intersects U.S 1 and U.S. 222 downstream of Dr.Jack Road about a 1/4 mile at an old railroad bridge. The length of the lower section is 6 miles , not long, but once you run it ,I think you'll say it was worth the ride.

Please contact me if you plan on coming or have any questions . hornet71@verizon.net or 856-767-2780

(From Terry)
Time and place still the same (10 AM at the Elway gas station Rt.1 & Rt. 222). I was exploring Friday for a suitable restaurant which would be close and would accommodate anyone interested in getting together for a late lunch /early dinner after we paddle. There is a family restaurant in Rising Sun MD on Rt.273 (next to McDonald's about 10 minutes away. I think it is called something like (Hometime?) or like that. I did not eat there but it looks O.K. with sandwiches for about $3.50 and dinners like $7-$12+. Afterwards, I have a special surprise for anyone who doesn't mind scrambling over rocks (big rocks). It is a 100 ft. waterfall that only the locals know about for the most part. I visited it Friday and was impressed. There may not be as much water flowing over it on Saturday, but it is worthwhile. It is a piece of Class 5 West Virginia transplanted, and only 10 minutes from Rising Sun. It is on the way home to I95 for New Jersey paddlers. Don't forget to bring your cameras. Let me know if there are any questions and bounce this back to me so I know you received this.

Hope to see you on the water.

I'm sorry that we didnot catch up to you. Fred and Dick stopped at their normal spot for lunch and so we missed you. I hope you had a great paddle and next trip we will meet for lunch. Fred and Dick took out at the church, but the rest of us paddled to the end. I was in the back with Howard. Shortly after passing the church, I was pulling my boat over a tree trunk at some swiftly moving water. I had my tiny camera in my vest pocket, but not secured. As I was bending down and pulling really hard to get my boat over, my camera fell out of my pocket. I paddled to the end where Jerry was already waiting for me. He thought I was joking when I told him my story. He wanted to go looking for my camera. Fortunately I dropped my camera near an easy access spot. He got out his snorkel and performed a search and rescue, starting about 12 down stream from where my camera went in the stream. At about 9 or 10 feet downstream, he found my camera. He said the water was cold.
See you soon. Joan

Quiet board lately.
I'm almost done with my cabin, so I hope my attendance on the famous SJCC trips should resume shortly, provided I can get a roof rack on my new car.
Since no one responded to Jerry's post, I'll throw my 2 cents in.
I personally would prefer to keep the schedule the same or similar to how it's been the last few years. That is to say, trips in Sept-May with a few impromptu trips thrown in between. I always try to avoid paddling the Pines in the Summer because of the sheer number of people out there, not to mention I prefer the Adirondack's northern latitudes during the warmer months. Though I sure wouldn't mind a summer reprise of the great "Eggspedition" or comparably suicidal journey. :)

I am looking for suggestions for next years schedule. I’m thinking of making this a 12-month calendar. The trips would be listed as the “first” and “third” Saturday of every month with the shuttle time at 9:00 am. The Toms River will be removed from the list. The schedule will be annual with forward updating (all dates are forward dates). I will try to shorten the winter trips so they end by 3:00 pm to allow for an extra margin of safety. I will post a draft of this subject to revision. There will be a list of contact persons and a hotline with a recorded message as well as the Message Board and Shuttle Board. Individual trips will not list a contact person. Also, We need to have some clearing/cleanup trips. A short section (normally a 1-2 hour paddle) will be made safe to paddle. They will be listed on the Shuttle Board. Once this calendar is set, you can have automatic emailing of all upcoming trips and updates. You can subscribe to the bulletin boards right now to have all postings sent immediately to you. I am planning to add Google Maps references and coordinates for all trips. We need to do some cataloging of the photos. The website has been designed for fast downloading for dialups and cell phones. The boards and photos are on other servers/services. You may logon to the photos and order pictures. All paddlers with a spirit for adventure are welcome. No dues, membership, officers or meeting…just paddling…all seasons…all weather.

Unless you are paddling in Alaska, Illinois, Ohio, Oklahoma, Iowa, Minnesota, or Pennsylvania you are not required to register your canoe or kayak.

States With Canoe & Kayak Registration Requirements (from American Whitewater website) --

Alaska requires registration of all paddle craft

Arizona registration requirements repealed in 2000 due to lack of funding, high cost of administration, and ineffective ability to return services to the paddle sports community at a level corresponding to the fees.

Illinois requires registration of all paddle craft

Ohio requires registration of all paddle craft

Oklahoma requires registration of all paddle craft

Iowa requires registration of all paddle craft

Minnesota requires registration of all paddle craft

Pennsylvania requires registration of all paddle craft using Fish & Boat Commission access points.

So, if you are going to the Boundary Waters or other mid-west
destinations listed above... then maybe a registration is in order.
If you are mainly planning on taking jaunts from NJ into Pennsylvania, then just get a Use Permit. That way you will not be required to carry around the registration paperwork.

Vince-
PA Boat registration questions are well-answered here:
http://www.fish.state.pa.us/faqregt.htm

Your question, if I understand it, is more for reciprocal purposes in states other than PA or NJ; i.e., many states will accept your home state registration as exception to having to buy one for the foreign state. PA allows you to buy either a launch permit with little or no boat info whereas a registration is much like a vehicle registration and will place your name, address and boat info into the state's official registry.

IMHO, I don't believe a PA launch permit would serve as reciprocity for the registration purpose in another state. A PA launch permit allows you access to PA boat ramps only and has no registration attributes.

Since NJ does not require registration, but PA is not your home state, will, say, Vermont accept the PA registration? Interesting question.

Don't worry, as soon as Corzine gets wind of this, he'll get NJ canoe/kayak registration fees enacted. ;-p
Stephen Miller  216
03-01-2007 07:59 PM ET (US)
You do not need to register your canoe or kayak in PA, but do need a non-powered use permit to use PA launches and State Park/Fish Commission Lakes.

You can buy a PA non-powered boat use permit online from the PA Fish and Boat Commission at
http://www.theoutdoorshop.state.pa.us/FBG/...shProductSelect.asp
Click on Boat Permits under Product Categories.

I know that PA requires canoe registration, but NJ doesn't. Does anyone know if I can register a canoe online with PA DMV? I'd like to have this for out of state excursions.

A fine trip on the Wading, it's always nice,
That water was arctic despite the lack of ice

Subfreezing air temps, watching icicles grow.
I’m still nursing and wrapping my frostbitten big toe

Jerry was back, with the thumb that he broke
Enjoying and savoring each paddling stroke

And then there was Steve, who said “Look what I’ve got!”
As he glided along in his shiny new Penobscot

Invigorated was Kevin, he gave a great big “Ah!”
Even when paddling his ice encrusted Wenon-ah

Not a bad day over all, despite the frigid long haul,
But I’m still wondering, what the heck happened to Paul?

What a beautiful day. We missed all of you. Jerry didnot escape from the hospital until 11 am. Instead of paddling, we walked on the boardwalk in Ocean Grove and Bradley Beach with lots of people and lots of dogs. After that we went to Cheesequake State Park and hiked around. See you all at the Tom's River.

Oswego

The weather today: unsurpassed.
Jerry bound up with his cast.
Vince P settled back,
positioned mid-pack(!)
and Paul, being stealthy, was last.

Like ladies of ill-repute,
Vince L & Jeff were, uh, cute?
It takes a queer eye
for a straight guy
to show up in a floral swimsuit!

Strange that today I'd not flip,
much to the dismay of Skip.
Don't worry my friend;
you sure can depend
I've plenty more chances to dip.

The trip was really sublime
but I'm too tired to rhyme
the rest of the group(*),
a mighty fine troop,
perhaps at a later time.

Paddling astarboard then port:
therapy moreso than sport.
Swego's so pretty
'tis more the pity
that it is so golldarn short!

A paddle on the Oswego, what a serene day.
Blue skies abound rather than gray.
Absent was Howard, the rest present, one and all,
bringing up the rear were Joan, Vicky and Paul.
As usual, paddling this river was a joy
Even when I was fooled by that blasted duck decoy.

We saw many Pitcher plants, rooted to ground like a sponge,
It must’ve been a good day, even Kevin didn’t plunge.
Oswego Lake, this year it was ice free,
no need for a throw bag to be pulled in by Jerry and me.
I love Martha pond, a name I endear,
and so concludes the SJCC trips for the year!

The Great Egg Harbor River, 12/2/06

She arrived by herself, all alone
to lead 10 stinky men, our Joan.
Tho’ we were merry,
we missed ya Jerry
(at home with your broken thumb bone.)

Onto the Egg we scrambled.
Not over-easy we rambled.
Canoes up in trees,
blood on our knees.
Through thickets we cursed as we gamboled.

Vince, wanting some personal space,
was not slowed by wood in his face.
We caught up at lunch,
the lumbering bunch,
but post-meal he was gone, apace.

For myself, my pace was a joke
since sinking my boat in the Yolk.
A cold partial swim,
a lunge for a limb,
a damp dangling bumbling bloke.

The Egg was tough, by Jehovah,
and like Miss Navratilova:
though neither are straight
they're both awfully great!
Today, I’m just glad it’s Ova.

Try the links again. As you know, I'm a bit of the contrarian. I don't use IE at all. I use Netscape or Firefox and had no problem opening the links on a couple of different computers.

So then I tried IE and, yes, I too had problems opening the links. But I waited a bit and tried again and they opened. Since the links include a "sign on", perhaps there is a conflict when someone else is hitting the site at the same time?

Anyone else having problems with the links in the recent posts?

A day on the Mullica, the sky sunny and bright.
The air a bit chilly, but nary a paddler in sight.
We lunched at the beaver pond,
and like the wave of a magic wand,
we took off like a flock of geese in flight.

Recent rains kept the banks moist and damp.
No real problem till we reached Mullica camp.
Someone absconded with an arrow,
Steve fell in, not quite chilled to the marrow,
and a smelly horse pile I stepped in at the ramp!

What a great day, thanks for all the laughs.

Menantico - Autumnal Bliss

Fast water, tight turns and bright sun:
eight paddlers enjoyed a fine run.
Trees red and yellow,
a day: quite mellow;
and sailing canoes was much fun.

Cougar Prowls South Jersey Town

POSTED: 7:57 am EDT May 26, 2006
UPDATED: 7:59 am EDT May 26, 2006
NBC10.com

Something is on the prowl in a quiet South Jersey town, and police are trying to trap it.

A cougar is on the loose.

Police in Greenwich Township, Gloucester County, have fielded calls about numerous cougar sightings.

Mriah Malara, 11, said she saw the cougar up in a tree.

An officer was called and crossed paths with the cougar.

New Jersey Fish and Wildlife officers believe the cougar weighs about 75 pounds.

They were able to trace paw prints that run alongside deer trails at the old Dupont plant.

Since there is a park and a daycare nearby, police and wildlife officials want it caught.

Note---Keep your eyes open, actually there have been stories about cats in this area for as long as I can remember (1958)...I've never sen one nor talked to anyone who has seen one.

The schedule is finally ready.
So far this year we have had two really good trips, one on the Maurice River and the second on on the Mullica River. Our biggest challenge this season will again be the Egg Harbor River. Carl B. and John R. have done some clearing. The good thing about our first trip on the Egg Harbor is that we will be paddling Oct 7 and the weather is still warm.
Jerry and I are looking forward to seeing our paddling friends and hoping to meet some new ones.
If you have any questions or suggestions, let us know.
See you on October 7th. Joan

Though warm-weather folks

I'd be pleased to canoe with y'all.

While some, the cold, may abhor,

Menantico is clear AGAIN from Rt 552 to Rt 49. Rt 49 to the ponds is still a challenge. Even in shallow water the current is fast. There was a triple tree…now a double and another single deadfall. Plus there is a right-turn that could cause some grief. I’ll do some more clearing before our Fall trip. Joan is still working on the schedule.

Fowarded to me by a friend:

Shutdown hitting home
Across the state, effects of the shutdown started to spread as the impasse entered its first non-holiday workday.
In Chatsworth, in the heart of the Pine Barrens, a private canoe rental service has had to cancel float trips for hundreds of participants, because the state shutdown of parks has led to a ban on boat trips on the rivers that flow through the parks.
"We are shut down until further notice," said Steve Sooy, manager of Pine Barren Canoe Rental. "Right now I can't even put a canoe in the river."

The Egg: from Weymouth to Lake
was the trip we'd planned to take.
But the Lake was "closed",
the ranger disclosed,
for college regatta's sake.

Since we hadn't a scull, the
plans we had to remull: "Uh,
how 'bout we all go
and do Oswego?"
But Joan remarked: "The Mull'ca?"

"Plan B" was quickly approved;
the shuttle, it was re-moved.
From Egg we scrambled,
to Ats'on rambled.
The trip, IMO, improved.

The day was warm and sunny,
the comp'ny: skilled and funny.
We all braced the dip
but Paul still did flip,
Jer's got vid, I'll bet money.

(Fun trip, great folks, lousy poem.)

My daughter, Julia, age 27, and I recently (4/1/06) canoed the Nescochague. I thought you might enjoy her thoughts on that trip.

 INHERITED INSANITY

Some people might say that I’ve been overstaying my welcome on my recent trips home. How would they know? Well, it could be that my Dad was throwing out a few hints during my most recent visit last week.

For example, the activities that he had planned for me? Involved canoeing in the rain. In the Pine Barrens, known for its narrow, tortuous streams lined with pricker bushes. And the river itself was crossed by so many logs that there were times when we weren’t canoeing so much as hoisting canoes over logs, or hunkering down in the inch of muddy water in the bottom of the boat to slip under the log/sticker bush combinations with, oh, 1 inch of clearance above the boat and my back. We were canoeing with a group of people, some of whom thought nothing of standing up in the front of their boats, chainsawing away at the underbrush. Seems like a pretty obvious ploy to encourage your daughter to keep to her side of the country. Or I guess it would in any other family but mine.
Because here’s the thing; I had a great time. It was jungle canoeing! A challenging, full body work-out! I can’t say that I loved the prickers trying to rip holes in me, my shirt, and my raincoat. Nor do I take much pleasure from soaking wet underwear. But I was pleased to see that I could still handle a paddle with moderate skill after several canoe-less year. There’s a certain adrenaline rush in seeing how far we could ram the boat over the submerged logs before someone had to step out, balancing preciously on a slippery log to help lift it along. Additionally, fighting the swift currents while figuring out the right angles to try to slip under the low hanging trunks, created a spatially challenging, intellectual problem-solving vibe complementing the physical nature of canoeing. The chain-saw wielders were a hoot, and helped clear our way (somewhat). And at the end, after I had slipped into the woods to change into dry clothes, we stopped with some of the other members of the trip for a beer. And we all know my warm, fuzzy feelings towards beer.

Nesco to the hop (oh baby...)
------------------------------

I hope I wasn't too rude
by leaving after the food,
but I couldn't chance
to miss my kid's dance;
'would've been bad Dad-itude.

'Turns out I'd plenty of time,
but now no story to rhyme.
No paddling mishaps
to tell of my chaps,
and that's a poetic crime.

The tree at the end was work,
I tugged and gave a hard jerk.
Then 'boing' and 'thwack'
my bungee snapped back
and hit my head; you may smirk.

Thanks all for the fun.

Vince,
We all put on our rain gear and everything was okay. Paul took cover under his kayak. When we got to the wooden bridge and the bad obstruction around the bend, Dick, Fred & Peter took out at the old bridge and we never saw them again. Jerry dumped trying to ram his way through, but then he stood in the water and helped the rest of us. Unfortunately there were several more obstructions before we joined the Mullica River and finished the trip. We all had a fun time. See you in a couple of weeks. Joan

Vince, the day was indeed so great,
and the trip was rugged and late.
That well may explain,
the err from your brain:
We Eggscapists number-ed 8.

At 300 square feet of briar,
when things looked bleak and dire,
"MacGyver" came through
he rammed his canoe;
a feat I still admire.

'twas tough for all I could tell
by the call I got on my cell:
"Uh, this here is Scott,
where have you guys got,
how'd you pass the Gates of ..." (well ;->)

It is, on the Egg, a sure bet
(yet I always seem to forget)
that when I out stand
onto the white sand,
I sink so fast I get wet.

These trips recollect my youth
when creeking wasn't uncouth.
Cuts, scrapes and some dirt,
play hard 'til you hurt,
and "NOW" is the only truth.

=========================================================== =
Thanks gang for another fine day of dings, "darns!" and dirt.

Since Kevin seems to have gone missing, I'll try my hand at this post-trip script.

The sun shone on the Egg like heaven.
Away we went, our number was seven.
Most paddled on their knees,
‘till we hit that wall of trees,
the going was slow even for Kevin.

We rammed through briars and hoisted over logs.
Nothing like the Oswego’s cedar bogs.
Untroubled, we said what the heck,
‘till Kevin went in up to his neck,
his clothes dripping like a bunch of wet frogs.

At Penny Pot further downriver,
He changed to avoid getting a shiver.
We were in a time crunch,
so we gulped down our lunch,
and I wondered if that was good for my liver.

Paddled we did, till it was near dark.
My canoe full of sticks, moss and bark.
Scratched, dirty and tired,
At the take out I felt wired,
‘cause in the SJCC record book this trip makes a mark.

Hi Joe-
I've paddled with the SJCC, but I don't claim to represent anyone else's views but my own. The folks that usually meet for these bi-weekly paddles are very friendly, and at the same time, self-sufficient. Participants car-top their own boats and show up at the pre-designated meeting place(s). If the meeting spot is at the put-in, boats are unloaded and most everyone climbs back into their car(s) to make the shuttle run to the take-out. Someone usually volunteers (or is volunteered) to return the drivers back to the put-in. We embark on our paddle and always have a great time. While canoeing is not rocket-science, it helps to have some paddling experience in order to navigate the sometimes twisty little rivers of the Pine Barrens. More likely than not, you'll have to clamber over the occassional fallen tree(s) or thread your way through branches, ivy and brambles. The published paddling dates are always on Saturdays.

Looking at some of your comments and the pics attached, looks like there is much fun and maybe a bit of serenity to this paddling sport. I have a 17' alum canoe that I picked up last year for $100 but have only taken it out fishing. Is there a trip anyone of you would recommend to a beginner? I'd like to get out and start soon but I only have Sundays available. My Siste and Brother in law are also interested but the have an old 17' coleman scanoe. Is that an OK 2 man canoe? Like me, they have only fished so we all need a very frindly trip. Recommendations? Also, I see that your website says that meeting time is departure time.. Is there a charge to get on this transport and how about transporting our canoes?? Thanks for any info ----- Joe

Half-hour into the Wading,
the sun began its fading.
As we got wetter
the trip got better;
I give it an A+ rating.

Though paddling is my passion
I have no sense of fashion.
My Kmart couture
is not de rigueur;
my raingear's less than dashin'.

Speedwell to Evans went fast
with our most capable cast.
The rain greased our skids
and dripped o'er our lids,
ne'erless, we all had a blast!

The Oswego was dicey
'Cause it was real icy
And we almost lost hope
Til Jer tossed us a rope
So across that hard water we did ply
To safety and apple-cranberry pie

Thanks for a great day.

Oswego 12/17/05

The 'Swego was pretty, and nice,
er, once we got past the ice.
The trip, 'twas not marred
by the lake froze hard,
began with a digging device.

Our path, it looked impassed,
but Jerry "MacGyver" thought fast:
he shoveled a trail
so we could prevail.
Wintry paddlin' unsurpassed.

And though we had quite a crowd
through the pack ice we all plowed.
And thanks to Jer's line
we all arrived fine
(and made the Titanic proud.)

After the lake was the road;
we picked up and carried the load
with pleasant shiver
down to the river
and got back into paddlin' mode.

Jer' put his shovel away
and through the islands we'd play.
3 yaks, 8 canoes
on a backwoods cruise.
We really enjoyed the day.

We stopped at the pump for lunch
bs'd and laughed up a bunch
But Vicki, oh my,
that cran-apple pie
was a most delicious munch!

We dined, then resumed our trip.
Vince, Vicki, Peter and Skip,
Jack, Steve, Paul, Kev, Scott
were among the lot,
Howard n' Jer, at the tip.

At last we arrived at the lake.
Our boats there we did out take.
Too soon, it did seem,
to exit the stream
and back to dry land, awake.

Yet ANOTHER great day with South Jersey's propitious, paramount, peerless paddlers!

My many, many thanks to all who participated, (and those who missed out on) the great egg-trapolation of this paddler in her hour of need. Never had one damsel so many knights in paddle-clothing come to her aid.
I am back from the doctors today and I'm ready to go again. Looking at the pictures I can see why I had the trouble, who is that chick wearing every stitch of her non-cotton wardrobe? I sure didn't need a couple of those layers, scarves, et al,. One thing I could not do without, the care, help and company of my very dear friends. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

The Great Egg Harbor River 12/3/05

This day the Egg was scrambled:
high-watered and amply brambled,
with deadfalls galore,
thorns, briars and more;
a maze, through trees, that rambled.

Well met at Piney were we
'tween rifles and ar-cher-y.
We talked and we laughed
unloading our craft,
and who, but Paul, did we see.

Tho' the stream was flowing fast,
our pace, we learned, would not last.
For at every turn
at bow and astern
branches did claw as we passed.

John-1, the sawyer that day,
he'd cut the jungle away.
Sister Joan finessed
the tangles the best,
while Jer'd just blast through his way.

'bout Howard, John-2 and Vince
I cannot say much 'cause since
they headed the pack
while I ambled back
to earn my scratches and wince.

Feeling unwell and icky
quieted yakker Vicki.
In Kevin's canoe
she rode (arse first too!)
which made the steering quite tricky.

When we took out at some place,
2 boats were the only trace
of Vince & Jerry
whose paces did vary
when back to the cars they did race.

Vince, he returned but alone.
Jer's whereabouts were unknown.
He finally arrived;
'pparently survived
a run in the Twilight Zone.

The trip, I'd say, was unique,
a bruising day on the creek.
'Twas cold and was fun,
and now that we're done.....
Let's do it again, next week!

Kevin & Vince,

We transported Vicki home. She attended the Outdoor Club Party and she told me she drank lots of water all night, so she realizes that she was dehydrated. She says thanks to all of us for taking care of her.

I heard from Howard, John & John that the top part of the last section of the trip was a swamp. I like paddling the Egg.

Kevin, I'm waiting for our trip poem.

Mull'ca from Jackson to Lake
was the trip we'd planned to take
Said Jerry, as scout:
"The water's all out",
so we drove to the bridge named Quake...(r).

We bounced o'er ruts through the wood
and drove as quick as we could
to quench paddlin' lust
we suffered the dust
in hopes the Batsto was good.

We found the put-in quite fair
and just enough water in there.
With old friends and new,
3 yaks, s'ven canoe,
led on by Joan and by Jer'.

The Legend of Scott had begun;
the Dagger made the day's run.
At home his 'yak stayed
as he played single blade
finding canoeing much fun.

Joined us did North Jersey Vince,
his boat so fine he did wince
from the sand, no doubt,
at shallow take out,
so gave his red Bell a rinse.

New folks were Myra and Mike.
3 hours almost, down the pike,
that day they did drive
yet first to arrive.
They seemed, the Batsto, to like.

Howard is always so quick
through stands of Cedar so thick
he paddles most fine
and holds a good line
quietly turning his stick.

Vicki is never so shy
to let a moment go by
without an opine
or a quick one-line
a "raving writer", oh my!

Kev'n and Mike heard the drummin';
paddles on tincans a'comin'.
They picked up the pace,
to take-out did race,
not to be beat by no Grumman.

Last, but not least, is our Jack
with "Tales of dead things" no lack
he be "Da Man"
with musical van
who selflessly shuttles the pack.

We tried to clear fron New Brooklyn to Winslow on the Great Egg Harbor River on Saturday. 1/4th of the section is done...we walked most of it due to deadfalls and low water. We started at 10:00 and finished at 5:00. I think we stopped clearing by 2:00 and then walked most of the way to the end. The river needs a lot of work. Ask Kevin how bad it is...we paddled it in the spring.

Kevin & others,

We had a fun day on the Maurice River and the company was great! It was a perfect day for paddling. I only saw two fringe trees in bloom, north of Almond Road. Last year I saw lots more. After Almond Road I saw lots of yellow flag type flowers and the hybiscus are beginning to sprout out of the old hybicus plants. The river is loaded with hybicus plants.

The Maurice is loaded with poison ivy. The vines grow out into the river and seem to be stretching out there vines to unsuspecting paddlers. Most of the time I stayed clear of the vines, but occassionally I would get too close to the paddler in front of me, I would have to put on my brakes, and then I would get swept into those posion ivy vines. By Monday I will know if I will have to suffer for several weeks.

A good remedy for poison ivy: Run the hottest water you can tolerate on your poison ivy for a couple of minutes. Relief from the itchiness lasts for many hours.

We saw a large group of gosslings at Almond Road. Jerry took some pictures of them in the water. But while we were having lunch at the picnic pavilion at Almond Road, we watched a group of gosslings being protected by two adult geese. Vicki (our group naturalist) says that there is a community effort of taking care of the babies. The two adult geese watching the 8 gosslings are only performing a duty of surpervisoring the babies. Those two adults even drove off other geese who got to close to the babies.

Shortly after we took off from Almond Road, we came upon two gosslings on the shore. When they saw us, both took off in the river and swam and were carried by a rather fast rushing current down the river. It was strange that no adults were there. The two little guys went drifting and kicking down the river. Sometimes they would dive down into the water and dissappear for a short period of time and them pop up again. It was such a wonderful opportunity to see them. Finally we saw the adult Canada Goose. It hunked and hunked at us and looked like it would attack us, as it tried to keep out attention from the gosslings. Shortly before Landis Avenue and the bridge there, I passed the two babies and at the bridge I finally passed the parent. Later when Vicki caught up to me, she said that she had lost sight of the two babies and the Mother was still looking for them. I sure hope the parent was reunited with the babies. It was so exciting. You would have loved it Kevin.

I hope you had a good day. We all enjoyed our time on the Maurice River.

THE GREAT EGGSCAPE(renamed)- New Brooklyn to Lake Lenape
Too tired (liftover) today (liftover) to write a (fall in) poem.

I anticipated a (liftover) paddling challenge (liftover), but never in my (liftover) wildest ....nightmares, expected the extraordinary (liftover) number of HUGE (liftover) downed trees, primarily from New Brooklyn(liftover)(liftover)(liftover) to Route 54.

Despite the (liftover) broken seats, very low (liftover) water and 837 (liftover) deadfalls, the weather was great, company fine (liftover) and 15 hours of liftovers are complete!

My canoe is banged, dented, scarred .... hey, so is my body! Jerry, thanks for agreeing to do this for your second time (masochist) and Joan, thank you for seeing "the boys" off on our day of play at 5:30am and picking us up at 8:45pm (you're a saint). I'll never do this again... until next year!! Jerry- pencil a date for 2006.

During the week sounds good...sometime in May. It takes about 15 hours...plus travel & shuttle time. You should have drinks like Gatorade(http://www.gatorade.com)& water, some hard candy, necco waffers (simple sugar)and gorp/ganola bars (complex carbs). The trick is endurance not speed. Launch time should be between 5:00 & 5:30 (daybreak). The expedition will be discussed on May 7th during the Basto trip. This is not a trip to see IF you can complete it...it is an expedition for experienced paddlers. Anyone interested???

Determined to keep firm the date,
phone calls confirmed our fate.
At Weymouth we met
and hardly got wet!
The paddlin' turned out to be great.

Jerry uplinked to the sat',
and tracked where the rain was at.
He said: "Let us go"
and off, tally-ho,
down the Great Egg, we ....gat(?)

Smooth paddling we had til the Lake.
There winds whipped up a fair wake.
We bobbed and we weaved
through waves, as we heaved,
that made our little boats shake.

We were: 3 J's and 1 K

We will most likley explore the head of the lake. When I said short, that was straight through at the end of a 31 mile trip. I'll post a Goggle maps link that includes satallite photos on the Egg page and here.

Hey Jer-
I didn't want to clutter up the shuttle board with this but, since you raised the point that this is to be a short trip, is there a possibility, weather permitting, of anyone wanting to begin the trip earlier and upriver farther? We could paddle down to meet those wishing to stick with the original route at their put-in.

We'd need enough interest to be able to run the longer shuttle. Also, is there a put-in above Weymouth that would allow us to rendezvous in time?

If this throws a wrench into the works, then forget it - but if we can work in a longer float, lemee know!

I was so happy to find your site from the PPA newletter. Just last week I was thinking about how I don't have enough outdoor people in my life and the way I love to experience the outdoors most, is in a canoe.

I plan to join the May 7th trip.

I have a 17 foot flat bottom aluminum canoe that was given to me years ago. I don't take it out much because it's such a bear to transport. It's got a slow leak. I guess I moving towards being in the market for a canoe

I am a Red Cross Canoe instructor and teach basic a course with a few other instructors on an early June weekend every year at Clarks' Canoe Rental in Pemberton. I'll post the details in case any of you have family or friends that are timid and want to learn that way.

I'm also a counselor for Canoeing at Camp Ockanickon summer residential camp for the past few years. It's the joy of my life! When the dams broke on July 12th and the lake drained last year, I was emotionally devestated.

I'm excited to see you do overnight trips. But, I don't have a clown suit like the women in your pictures. However, I do have a Viking helmut I sometimes wear to canoe in. Is that good enough?

Exactly how does the shuttle work?

Nescochague River looks good for April 9. Hopefully, I'll get the "Shuttle Board" up so paddlers can arrange shuttles. Also, it will serve as a signup sheet for our scheduled trips.

Yo Rambo! Look again... now 92. Not sure if this will work, but here's the link to the Cedar Photos. http://www.ofoto.com/I.jsp?c=qo7a3j2.awkb6dy&x=0&y=-jkfg4q

-------------------------------------
Trivia: Why is the park named "Double Trouble"?

There are conflicting stories about the naming of Double Trouble. Most of the common legends centered around the dam on Cedar Creek. The earliest story attributes the name to Thomas Potter who coined the words "Double Trouble" after spring rains washed out the dam two times in one season.

A more colorful legend involves local muskrats that persisted in gnawing at the dam, which caused frequent leaks. Such leaks gave rise to the alarm "Here's trouble", upon which workmen would rush to repair the leak. One day two breaks were discovered and one worker overheard the shout "Here's double trouble". Whatever the origin of the name, most sources suggest that the unusual title was born with the start of the cranberry industry.

Greetings. Looking for advice from some of you veterans who have been kayaking for a while. I want to get into Kayaking and join some of you on these trips but I don't have a Kayak. I know I shouild probably rent for know but with spring approaching, there are going to be some good deals out there and I'd hate to miss one. Being that there are so many choices, I am totally overwhelmed. Here are my specs: I am 6’ and 235 lbs (bit of a belly). Being brand new to the sport, I guess I want something that very stable tracks well, no longer than 14’. Importantly, it can’t break my bank but want it to last a few years without getting bored of it.

If any of you have any suggestions, I would appreciate it. The Kayaks I’ve looked at thus far for my mode was the Wilderness System Pongo 140, Old Town Loon 138, Victory Pungo Navigator and Wilderness System Cape Lookout 145 (with my weight, looks like the lookout won’t work). I plan on Kayaking rivers, lakes, ponds. Doubt if I’ll go ocean with it.

Thanks

Joe

By Ten our number was Nine;
we’d met to paddle a Pine.
The air, true, was cold,
yet ‘fore day was old,
the sun did warm us up fine.

Jerry, the sawyer, took Lead,
‘conversed without losing speed.
Leona & George
did tandemly forge.
“Quiet and quick”: Howard’s Creed.

Joan moved forward and back
cheerfully chatting the pack.
And clad orangely bright
Was our shuttling knight:
the Sweep was Hemmingway Jack.

Kev’ crunched his ribs in a tree,
(he bet he’d clear it you see.)
Our paddles we flicked
as Paul politicked
and bantered good-naturedly.

I o’erheard Joe deliver
a quip so true I did shiver.
That despite our state
of wealth, small or great:
“I’m rich, here on the river.”

The Egg, in the cold and the sun
challenged each boat one by one.
With strainers galore,
thorns, carries and more
granted us paddlers Great fun!

Joe, Any Coleman will be difficult to control in a stream. They were designed for fishing on ponds. They don't turn very well and the keel will catch the current and push the boat into the banks.
Please email southjerseycanoeclub@yahoo.com for more information. They may know someone for you to paddle with.

Quoted from Joe Pylka's post on Phila Canoe Club BBS:

"If you are a paddler who uses the Delaware River, please come to a public meeting this Thursday evening at the Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve just above Washington Crossing State Park on the PA side, off Rte 32 below New Hope. Refreshments will be served beginning about 6:30 with a presentation at 7 pm followed by breakout sessions. We want your input regarding various aspects of paddling this river, plus we want to get you acquainted with the trail concept."

Joe- I'm not the one to respond since I've only been on a few trips with SJCC; but, I'll fill the time until someone else replies.

I've actually done some of the Pine Barrens Rivers (Batsto & Mullica) in a Coleman Ram-X 17. The Coleman was heavy, but I found the trick to turning on these twisty rivers was to paddle kneeling in the middle. If you don't mind kneeling and leaning the canoe, it is possible to navigate these forgiving rivers.

I've never paddled a Scanoe, and don't know how it would handle the turns. More recently, I've paddled some of the even smaller rivers in my Wenonah Solo, a lighter, delightful canoe. Some of these smaller streams may be tough to paddle in a Scanoe. Just my 2 cents.

Hopefully, some of the South Jersey natives will respond with their thoughts.

I am new to the Paddling community and want to get some experience. I have a 17' Coleman Scanoe that I got off of E-Bay for fishing the local rivers around here. Using a trolling motor and a few swishes with the ores is about the extent of my experience. I see you require an experienced paddler on board, If I come on ne of your trips, would there be an experienced paddler available or would I ride with someone else? I know the scanoe is heavy and not very fast so finding someone to ride with me may not be that easy. I do want to purchase a Kayak in the near future but all I have now is the canoe. I'm open to anyone who has recomendations or suggestions on how I can become an "experienced paddler".

Hartley traded his Raddison with Roy and now has a 14 foot Red Solo Mohawk. So far this season, we've run every trip as scheduled. I have to find out what section of the Toms River we'll be running in January...I have a chainsaw that needs to see some action. What a group!!! I'm always looking forward to the next trip.

Vines purloined her blade, but Vicki did battle.
John G cold-dipped, in pursuit of his paddle.

Hartley's neck caught ivy, whate'er should we do?
Jerr's quick response: paddle harder the canoe!

John's clippers o'erboard, they couldn't be found;
Kev hopes his wolf-spider swam and not drowned.

Howard blazed a path: quiet, quick and quite neat
and Joan, as we know, was upbeat and Sweet.

Tortuous, tiny, twisty (and fun)
can't wait to return to the Creek now we're done.

Glenn- I'm sure a few of the NJ residents will provide you with first-hand knowledge & suggestions, but in the meantime, you may want to poke around on paddling.net's places2paddle (NJ): http://www.paddling.net/places/NJ/

I know that camping along the Mullica is popular. Here is an excerpt from Robert Parnes book: http://www.paddling.net/places/showReport.html?485

By the way, Parnes book: Canoeing the Jersey Pine Barrens, is a great guide to the history, flora & fauna, and paddling put-ins and routes of the Pine Barrens. I strongly recommend it.

The NJ water guages are here: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nj/nwis/current?type=flow
peruse the Atlantic Coatal Basin section.

I've only done day trips in the Pine Barrens, but I plan on a camping trip "someday."

Take a beautiful autumn day, throw in a snake and a turtle, a couple of lizards, a few river otters, a lunchtime discussion of Klingons and Kerry, a "man overboard!" and you've got ...
a fabulous Fall foliage float on the Menantico Creek and Ponds.

Thanks to all for a fine time.
