I have used Liquid a swell, I think their xslt engine is much faster and I think their interface is much more user friendly with the diagramming, some nice screnshots here, http://www.liquid-technologies.com/xml-editor.aspx

The main problem I have with XML Spy is that it's too pricey for what it is, personally I think Altova would rather be in the corporate space with corporate level licences than to bother with home users, I have been using Liquid XML Editor for several years now and although they are a bit corporate as well, the home user pricing is fairly cheap.

We're biased but try using the Stylus Studio XML Editor - a free trial download is available. Here is some user feedback of xmlspy.

When development was halted on a piece of software called QNE the world lost a lovely, elegantly simple content management system for flat file web site creation.
The inner workings of the program are beyond me. All I know is that the friend who started out on this project had to abandon it because of insuperable problems with the Python scripting environment, which, three years ago at least, was a horrid heap of inter-locking utilities, some of which had actually been tested to work with one or two other utilities...
What I also know is that the author used XMLSpy to create the XML pages which produce NewsWireless every day. It's a real professional's tool, and I've just downloaded an evaluation version of the suite.
