So I'm in a poor mood. So, want to make something out of it?

A few corrections:
hotmail now gives you 250MB of storage you don't need a hotmail email address to sign into MSN's chat client, but a .net passport that you can get from MS for any email address

I COMPLETELY agree with you about the Yahoo "download a UK version" message. VERY annoying! I like to go onto to Yahoo Chat from time to time, and the US version of Messenger allows me to go in from there. The UK version does not!! Why must I be pestered into downloading it if I don't want it!! And if I must have the UK version, I must be allowed to opt out of the BT messages, and use Yahoo Chat like before!!

By the way, you can actually switch off "Yahoo Insider" in "preferences".

yes, exactly. Or, in my case, Verichat. I only wish it could keep an IRC session going.
Incidentally, maybe I misread the hotmail announcement, but they offered me 250 megs only if I gave them money. I don't reember how much.
Perhaps I should go check...

Guy, like you I was incensed by the constant popping up of the use the British version of Yahoo etc
The answer to the problem is very simple, go in to your Yahoo Folder on your hard drive (should be in Programs). In the Folder for Messenger look for the file marked Updater.exe and rename it - Mine now resides under the name of NotUpdater.exe!
This will stop the pop up each time you log on with Yahoo.
Best Wishes
Gareth

Quick correction: And if I must have MSN messages, I can pull my Orange SPV out; it logs onto that quite effectively. No, it can't talk to anything else - that's Not The Microsoft Way. Wrong, wrong and wrong. It's the Microsoft Software way. Solution - use someone else's software. Agile Messenger 2.0 ( http://www.agilemobile.com/agile_messenger.html ) works with Microsoft Smartphones such as the Orange SPV, and lets you connect to MSN, AOL, Yahoo and ICQ. It's also free, works well and doesn't give you pop-ups, at least as far as I've seen.

I just finished reading your article published on the Register with regards to Yahoo! and MSN etc.
As an SPV user myself, I have a problem with using MSN messenger since I have friends on most networks (except Yahoo, which I simply refuse to use) so instead I use the WindowsCE version of Jabber. It may not be feature filled, but at least you can connect and use all the IM networks. As far as PC connectivity is concerned, Trillian is more than adequate for me, it is not bloated with useless features, and thus also not with potential security holes.
I'm not having a dig at you, just pointing out that there are other options for us frustrated IM users! Regards, Joe Maw
